Neighborly Love

Raise your hand if you've seen the Jane Seymour/Christopher Reeve classic, Somewhere in Time?  If you have, think back to the scene where she sees him, after thinking she never would again, and screams across the hotel grounds, "RICHARRRRRD!!!!"

Now you have an idea of what's it like nearly every day when our little neighbor, Lisha, sees Millie and wants to play with her.  "Millie!"  And if we happen to be on our way out or on our way in for a nap, instead of able to play in the backyard or up at Lisha's house, the screams quickly reach fever pitch. "MILLIEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE!!!!!"

Lisha and Millie love to swing together in the backyard, as well as ride scooters and trikes around the carport.  They love playing together in general, and both Swati and I love that they can keep each other occupied.  Lisha's an only child, as is Millie during the day while her brothers--or "my boys" as she likes to call them--are at school.  Hip hip hooray for kid neighbors!

Hoops

It felt a little strange going to a gym every Saturday morning this past winter instead of an outdoor field for soccer.  I forgot just how loud a gymnasium could be, especially when you have two basketball games going at the same time: whistles, squeaky high tops, bouncing balls, parents cheering, coaches yelling.  Being there did bring back some fun memories, however, of junior high and high school basketball.

It was also fun to mix things up a bit and let B play a new sport.  Stephen helped coach with a friend from our church, which meant Benito got to play with a buddy on his team.  They both had a good time, as did Eli and Millie who got to play with their pals during the games; and I certainly didn't mind chatting with a friend, either.  Fun all around.

Rockamole

Stephen has some serious guacamole-making skills, and we have been loving it here in our house.  Eli aptly, albeit mistakenly, called it "rockamole" one time and the name stuck.  The only problem with his guacamole is how quickly it disappears.  Just about any time we get together with family to eat Mexican food, Stephen brings a batch of guacamole.  Here's a few pix of the batch he made for the Superbowl (way back when):

Spring Showers

Stephen's baby sister is tying the knot.
This is the same baby sister who grew up as Stephen's little buddy,
a sports-loving, no-nonsense, tough-as-nails tomboy,
who found her perfect match in a San Jose singles ward.
(Great place to meet your mate!)

We heart Kelly, her fiancee,
which is good because we super duper heart Aunt Kymber.

Anyway, it's been so fun to see my tomboy sis-in-law try on wedding dresses,
pick colors and decorations and invitations,
and even have bridal showers thrown for her.

That's why I jumped at the chance to get girlie
and help a little bit with one of the showers,
ignoring the fact that getting girlie generally involves crafting,
something I don't really do.
Ever.

But for Kymber, anything.

As Millie would say, Ta da!
This is the very small area I was in charge of that utterly stressed me out.
Apparently I'm the only person in the world
who's never made tissue paper poms poms or homemade chalkboards.
Harder than they look, people.
Harder than they look.

I had nothing to do with these, but aren't they cute?
THE most delicious cupcakes I've ever tasted.

Darth Millie

Oh, Millie . . .
Caught between the world of dance, princesses, and dress-up
and the world of Star Wars, Legos, and video games.
Sometimes she just makes us laugh.

Why Eli Hates Saturdays

A few months ago Eli surprised me by saying he hates Saturdays.  What kid hates Saturdays?  You don't have to go to school, you don't have to do homework, you don't even have to sit through three hours of church.  But our little kindergartner wasn't talking about any of that.  His response to my "Why?" was, "I hate Saturdays because I always get in trouble for breaking things and we always have to clean up."  Both good points.

Stephen decided to document one such Saturday morning moment, so you have some visual proof of why our six year-old hates every other kid in the world's favorite day of the week.

What one powerful kick of a soft, "indoor" ball can do

Three broken mantle items

= almost all of Eli's piggy bank $
(per Daddy's fed-up-with-these-shenanigans decision)  Ask Stephen if he has a list of all the destroyed items that he plans to have repaid when Eli makes it big in the NFL :)

Part of the Pack

Bennett's eighth birthday marked his entrance into Cub Scouts.
What that means:
every Wednesday night he dons a blue shirt,
goes to the church for an hour,
learns a skill or two from his patient leaders,
laughs with his friends,
magically earns merit badges,
and can't wait to go back the next week.

He loves it,
so we love it.

Benito currently belongs to the Wolf Den
with the other eight-year-old boys,
(next year he'll be a bear
and the year after a webelo)
but once a month all the Cub Scout dens and their families come together
for what they call pack meeting.

There's a flag ceremony,
a skit,
a song,
a theme,
some jokes,
some awards,
sometimes a lesson
(this last one was rock climbing & faith),
some activities,
some learning,
some treats
and lots of fun.
This last one was held on the lawn behind the church.
Families in camp chairs,
boys at the picnic tables,
all listening to a lesson about rock climbing and faith.
We made s'mores on the fire,
the kids did activities on the field that related to faith,
and the night ended with a spiritual story.
So great.

Man, do I have a new appreciation for scout leaders and all the work they do!

Ready, set, go really really slow
because your mom didn't know you're supposed to weight the car.
Whoops!

Poor B took last place in every single race.  But it did teach mister competitive a lesson about humility.

And he still managed to love it and have a great time.
