Flicks I pick

I saw and LOVED these movies this weekend:

Saving Mr. Banks

A true story about Walt Disney

and the musical Sherman Brothers

trying to convince P. L. Travers

to sell Disney the rights to her beloved book, Mary Poppins.

The personal backstory to the author's life

makes up a powerful portion of the movie.

The Secret Life of Walter Mitty

A story about hard-working, albeit humdrum, Walter

whose imagination

takes him places

that his own life never would

until something changes in the office

and adventure calls.

A Laugh a Day

At this phase of my life,
this comic strip often speaks to me:

This one has been on our fridge for months

So true!

And these two for December:

Yes

This was today's.  The kids didn't get it.

Children of the Leaves

A few weeks back,
Stephen made some leaf-raking artwork.

Which one would you put on your album cover?

Nutcracker Nostalgia

Millie and I went to the Nutcracker Ballet last night,
a beloved Christmas tradition from my own childhood.

I wondered if Mills would be able to sit through the whole thing.
Now I know.
Almost.
She did great the first act.
Not so much the second.

Apparently she had to get footloose.
I sat there urging her to sit down and be still,
only to have her respond with:
"Mommy, when I hear the music I just have to dance!"

She told Stephen all about the Mouse King and the soldiers
and how exciting it was when the Christmas tree grew "big, big, big!"
That was always my favorite part as a kid, too.

We saw it up at the Oakland Temple
as part of their Christmas Concert Series.
Pretty dang fantastic for free.

Winner, Winner, Turkey Dinner!

Fastest fourth grader at his school

1 mile in 6 minutes, 37 seconds

Way to provide for the family, Benito.
We cooked that turkey up and ate it for Thanksgiving!
