Happy Valentine's Day!

Our 5th Valentine's Day was quite a treat...even though Ben studied straight through Friday and Saturday he took a break Saturday so that we could take advantage of some free babysitting and go out! (Much thanks goes to Petko for getting on Ben's case about taking me out and providing the babysitting!). We didn't do much but enjoyed sharing a few bites of dinner before going to a party thrown by our church for adults. It was nice to be out with Ben for some time as this semester is really making him hit the books (both figuratively and literally!) . We ended up making the traditional dish (pictured above) on Sunday AFTER the kids were in bed--why didn't we think of this before?? I think we'll be doing this more often!! We really enjoyed it and loved the special treat of sopapillas from Daniella & Cristian!! They were so yummy and a great new addition to our beloved Cotes de Porc Sauce Nenette!!

Eliza's Ear Tube Surgury

I have decided that in order to be a really good mom--I need more education and less information. The past couple of months/year have been really hard on me. Here's the run down: Eliza had her first ear infection at 2 1/2 months old. She had her next one at 4 months old. Then her little body took a break but then she had them pretty sporadically and then consecutively since Thanksgiving (7 ear infections total in her first year of life). I HATED having her on antibiotics all the time. I HATED having her be cranky all the time. The doctor had already mentioned tubes once and of course, I flipped out! It seemed pretty drastic to me. I tried to do as much researching as I could--I asked other doctors, chiropractors, other mothers etc about what to do. I talked to the specialists. And it was so hard to decipher what I should do! Everyone had their opinion and that was how it was supposed to be--one side said, "Absolutely do NOT do them!" The other side said, "It's the only way!" It was really stressful and frustrating for me. I often felt like the worst mom. I finally decided to pray about it--I mean, after all the Lord says, "Ask and ye shall receive,"right? Well, I think that He's a pretty good source of information so it finally came down to us asking to understand what would be best and to feel peace and comfort with our decision. SO...

On February 10th, Eliza went in for surgery to have tubes put in her ears. Can I just say, "WOW!!" I cannot believe the difference in my daughter. Eliza has always struggled just a little bit with being as happy as I think she wanted to be--not any more. This girl is all giggles now! She is such a ham! Her walking went from pretty unstable to walking fantastically! I'm not kidding! She has a huge vocabulary now and is just a joy!! The surgery only took 15 minutes. When the doctor came and got us he said that there was a ton of fluid in her ears and that he was glad they'd done the tubes because it probably would have affected her speaking eventually--because most likely she was hearing things muted. Ben & I both feel truly blessed that the Lord has provided the world with the knowledge these doctors have!! What a day and age we live in! We also both feel like we are getting to know a whole new baby. Eliza is a constant delight now--we are seriously the most blessed parents in the world!

One disclaimer--this does not mean I will not continue to question my doctors. I will not ever do something just because a doctor says to BUT I do think that moderation in all things is a good motto to live by and again--I am grateful for the knowledge of all doctors, homeopathic s, chiropractors, D.O's, etc I think there is truly room for all of them.

Squaw Peak, AZ

Yes, there is a Squaw Peak in Arizona! Fancy that--Ben and I have been there before. Hmmm. :) But this time, we ventured out on a hike with our new friends, the Cardenas family, their 3 kids and our 2 kiddos! We did not hike the actual peak but instead did a more family friendly 1.5 mile hike. Xander was such a trooper--he hiked about half of it himself and he was very careful not to touch any cacti! (Poor little Adrien fell into a cactus with his head and Abigail's hand swiped one as she walked--OWWW!) Eliza did not enjoy the hike as much--she was very tired and did not want to be in the backpack--but we had a great time anyways. This area has lots of hiking opportunities to offer and we hope to get back on the trail a little more frequently this trimester! Feel free to join us!!

Dinner at the Otora's

What a grand feast we had! The Otora's invited us over for a Japanese dinner this week! We had a great time with Kaoru & Shin and the Mukai's-Kenta, Mari, Rin & Sui. The food was so delicious--I only wish I could have eaten more!

Xander really wanted to use the chopsticks--he probably ended up offending everyone though as he would stab and bite. I asked Mari how young kids start to use chopsticks--age 2! I just love these two women--they are so kind and so amazing! I will really miss them when we leave in May!

Growing Up

I just love watching my kids grow up, learn and find their personality!! Here are some things Eliza has been up to:
She LOVES to clean right now!

Eliza found Xander's goggles in the bath tub and wanted to wear them
-not just put them in her mouth!!
Eliza's Favorite Pose:
She loves to grab a book (or in this case the movie cover Xander left out), lean up against the couch and pretend to read out loud.

And lastly, Eliza has discovered the trampoline. And now that she can stand up on her own, she thinks it is so fun. (Don't mind the horse, that's Palito, Xander's horse. :)
