The "EYES"

It's fun to watch kids come into their own. Learning how to handle themselves and situations. I have watched Kenna the last couple weeks go from completely out of control attitude and tantrums, to being able to turn the attitude on and off. While it is quite amazing to watch this transformation happen right in front of me, it's also quite humorous to see her change in a second. She is a girl, therefore she has the attitude that goes right along with it!
She has these "eyes" that she used to use here and there. She now knows how to do it in a moments notice. When something doesn't go exactly as she imagined it.....then the "eyes" come out!Too funny! I think I might, quite possibly, have my work cut out for me in this one!

Bowling!

DJ had a work party for the family this last weekend at the bowling alley! Jaxson loves bowling! no need to help him here.....he is more than capable to do things on his own!
Jaxson had his own form down and everything! You would think we take him bowling on a regular basis....but really, not so much! he is very entertaining to watch though! After he would send the ball down, he would get on his knees and "will" the ball to hit the pins. When he knocked over more than one......no need to cheer.....he takes care of his own cheering! Hands in the air, all pumped up, a Who-hoo here and a high five to whoever is standing closest! Quite the site to see! It's worth taking him just for the pure entertainment of watching him!Kenna wanted to get in on the action as well. If she could hold the ball herself.....she would have done it alone! Instead, Daddy helped her just a bit!It was a great time and we all had a lot of fun. My thumb, however, was a little sore after 2 games! They never make those finger holes big enough!!!

The #1 Reason

We finally decorated the tree last night....it only took us 4 days to do it! We couldn't find any working lights at home, then we couldn't find any new lights at the store...but we did!
Jaxson gets up this morning and looks at the tree and says:
Jaxson: "Mom, do you know why we decorate the tree?"

Mom: "No, why do we do it?"

Jaxson: "Because if we don't....Santa will come and look at the tree and say (he holds his belly at this time) Ho Ho Ho, I hate it...then drop off the presents and leave!"

Well, there you go....now we know why we should decorate the tree!

Sally the Elf!!

You have all heard of the story of the Elf on the Shelf, well, Sally is our Shelf Elf! Last year I was on the phone calling Santa, and his elf, Sally, answered the phone. Jaxson was even able to talk to Sally a few times last year too.

Well, this morning, Jaxson woke up and found a letter from Santa on the table! It said that he has trouble deciding who should be on the nice list and who should be on the naughty list so he sends a Special Elf to come and watch over the children during the day, and reports back to Santa at night.
Since Jaxson has already talked to Sally, Santa sent her to our house. Jaxson just found her sitting on top of our computer armoire and is now very aware of his behavior! This letter came at the perfect time...yesterday...the kids were not so great!

Hopefully Sally has good news to report to Santa so the kids stay on the Nice list. They are working very hard to stay on there and get the big visit from Santa soon!
No fighting here.....just perfect brother/sister harmony. Can't be having any bad reports now!Is there such a thing as Halloween elves? Summertime elves? Year long watcher elves????

Phillips!

I recently had to go to the dentist because I had 2 cavities! Nothing I am proud of by any means, especially when they are 100% preventable! We did, however, use this opportunity to teach Jaxson exactly why it is important to brush your teeth! We tell him he needs to brush his teeth so he doesn't get cavities because they are no fun to fix!

So today at preschool, Jaxson's teacher was discussing something and had to use her last name....Phillips! So Jaxson blurts out, "Hey that's what my mom has. She had to get "phillips" because she didn't brush her teeth!"

Well, at least we know he was listening!

Christmas Photo Chaos!

Living away from family is never easy! It makes it hard to keep up on current family events, and the holidays are always a juggling act....even more than usual!
My mother-in-law sends out a Christmas photo card every year, and everyone enjoys receiving them as well. The catch here, is that it's a photo card of the grandkids. At the beginning, it was easy, there were only a couple kids and they got dressed in their holiday best and we snapped many photos and poses. Then, things got a little busy, 5 kids, mostly dressed in the best and a little chaotic trying to get them all to stay and look! We had everyone trying to get them to laugh and all the moms are taking pictures and we choose the best! Now...it's just chaos!
We were in town for Thanksgiving and aren't planning on returning until Christmas! So, Sunday afternoon, my in-laws decided to take the picture NOW! So they scrambled to get a tree and decorated it, called all the family and set up a time to meet and to just wear "whatever"! We had 3 cameras flashing, 1 whistle blowing, 2 men making funny sounds, 1 mom bribing with candy, and 7 children not doing what we we were asking of them!
After many pictures and replacing of certain children, we got what we consider is the best photo! Meaning 5 out of 7 kids are looking great! You have to settle or it'll never happen. We did try at one point to just take pictures of the siblings and make a card with 3 photos, but even that proved to be impossible! We'll just go with what we got!
This one is the "keeper", it's the best out of the bunch!
I keep telling my in-laws that we should video what the parents are doing trying to get the kids to smile. It really has to be quite the sight! Or it might just be more true to life and entertaining to have one of the kids snap a picture of all of us trying to get them to smile and send that out! Happy Holidays from our Chaos to Yours!Wait! Where is Kenna going?
Kenna is shocked, Jaxson is a chicken? and Tanner is picking his nose....Next!Kenna look this way! Tanner you too...nothing is down there....No! Go back..."here, I'll give you some candy, but you have to sit in that chair"...Too late! Kenna' s gone and they have all gone crazy.....let's stick to one from the beginning and call it good! Best 5 kids out of 7...majority rules!

Such a Good Brother!

Kenna hasn't been feeling well the last couple of days and Jaxson has been worried about her. The fact that she actually sits with me for more than 5 minutes at a time tells me something isn't right.
Yesterday, I heard her fussing in bed a little just when I was starting to wake up. I then heard Jaxson in there talking to her and "taking care" of her. He noticed she was crying, so being the great big brother that he is, he brought her a tissue. He then got her some water because she sounded like she needed a drink (meaning she was really hoarse).
I stayed in bed for a few and just listened to them and smiled to myself thinking how sweet they are with each other. Jaxson then helped her out of her crib and they came in to lay with me.
So a little while later, I sat with Jaxson and told him how sweet it was that he took such good care of his sister. He looks at me, totally serious and says "Yeah I have been up with her all night, like since 12:30!"
Hmmm, I thought! That's funny, everyone was sound asleep at 3am when I let the dog out, and Daddy says they were all asleep at 5am when he got up for work!
Well, I thanked him for the help regardless! He just gave a little sigh and said "yeah, but I'm a little tired now!"
Silly Kid!

The Best Part!

There are perks to everything! One of the perks of potty training is no more diapers of course, which has a domino effect about things from there. I have to say though, the best part of potty training is the encouragement!

Sure, we cheer them on when they go, reward them if we choose, but that's not the encouragement I am referring to.

No, it's when I go potty and the child comes in and says "Ta Da! Yeah!" Now when else to you get applauded for going potty? I can't get that kind of encouragement and support just anywhere! It's the best, I feel so proud of my accomplishment!

They do what they know....and I get to enjoy the perks!

Never Too Early to Have a Plan!

We go through life being asked what we want to do in the future, and to have a plan. Okay, I can’t even say that I really had a "plan" at 24 years old, and definitely not even an iota of an idea at 4 years old, but not Jaxson. He’s got one all mapped out!

Jaxson and I were having a little discussion about who he gets to tell what to do. Basically, it is not his job to boss his sister around. I told him that when he has his own kids, then it’s his job. So that, in turn, prompted the following conversation:

Jaxson: “Mom, I have a plan. Right now I am small, but when I get big like Daddy, you will have to give me away.”

Mommy: “Why will I give you away? Where will you go? Will you still live with me?”

Jaxson: “I will just go outside and wander around for awhile. Until I get my driver’s license and a car. Then I’ll get my own house and some money; because I will need new clothes since these ones won’t fit me anymore. Then I will find a girl.”

Mommy: “Will you still talk to me? Can I still see you?”

Jaxson: “Yeah, I’ll just give you directions to my house so you can come over”

Mommy: “Well, okay, that sounds good”

Jaxson: “Then I will find a wife and have a baby, but I don’t know what her name will be.”

Mommy: “What do you want in a wife?”

Jaxson: “I want her to be really pretty”

Mommy: “Anything else?”

Jaxson: “No, that about covers it. Oh, and I will have a home phone too so if you forget how to get to my house, you can just call me and I will tell you how to get there. I don’t know what my phone number will be yet, but I will tell you when I know it. My wife will probably tell me the number.”

So, I sit here laughing to myself thinking, how on earth does a 4 year old come up with this? Or maybe I am just a tad bit jealous that I didn’t have things this figured out when I was twice that age! I guess I should be happy that he has a plan, and has everything all figured out. It could be worse……he could have planned to run away and join the circus!

Crossing my Fingers!!!

Kenna is showing some early interest in going potty! I have been letting her sit on the potty for the past month and she thinks it is pretty cool. Her favorite part is reaching over and grabbing the toilet paper.....pretending to blow her nose.....and sticking it in the toilet....over and over and over! Well, at least until I remove the toilet paper from out of sight that is!
The other day she said "pobby" which is her version of "potty" so I thought, who am I to discourage her? Besides, diapers are expensive! So I put on the toilet, she sat there for a minute on the big seat, then I got out the smaller one. I set her down and then put her onto the small seat. After a few minutes she said "all done" so I got her down and put a new diaper on. A little while later, I went into the bathroom and noticed a small puddle on the ground. It turned out, she may have gone after all, just not on the toilet (which was really my fault for not having the little seat ready)!

So today, Kenna ran into the kitchen saying pobby again, so I took her in (with the seat on this time). After a minute or two, low and behold.....she went potty! Jaxson and I cheered saying "Yeah Kenna"....so Kenna ran around the house saying "Yeah Nenna".

Hey if she is wanting to potty train early.....then I am certainly not going to stop her....by all means baby, use the toilet! I am crossing my fingers!

Halloween Trick-or-Treating!

We had a great time taking the kids out trick-or-treating. We went with our neighbors and all their family! It was wonderfully fun chaos! Jaxson has been in his costume all day, he was a firefighter and was very "brave" as he says. Kenna, well we couldn't decide what she should be, but when I saw the kitty costume, I decided that was it! For some strange reason, she LOVES cats. Neither DJ or I are cat lovers, but she sure is. Half the time she walks around saying "meow" so I thought it would be perfect.Well Jaxson knew exactly what to do because at age 4, you are a seasoned pro at trick-or-treating. Kenna watched the first time, and scoped it out......
then quickly picked up on what to do. While she could barely mutter "treat" she had no problem taking the candy and putting it in the bucket! She said "thank you" at least!
Finally, after a few houses, she was ready to hang with the big kids and not have mom hold her at the door!
We went on quite the expedition with the group and had quite the haul of candy...which isn't necessary for any of us! I held Kenna a lot of the time because she was just too slow walking really. I tried to stand back a couple times and not go to a house or two because, really, does an 18 month old need any of this and she wouldn't know the difference anyway. Wrong! If I stood there and she saw that there were houses we were missing, she would squirm and say "down" or "nandy" (candy)! She didn't miss a beat! There was even one time when she dropped her bucket and Daddy was picking up all the candy for her and she yelled "mine" at him! No one messes with her candy!
When she started to fall asleep, my neighbor grabbed the bucket so she didn't have to hold it. A minute later, Kenna looked down and yelled....she suddenly realized her candy was gone!

All in all we had a great time. We got back just in time to have three trick-or-treaters come to our house! So that means all the candy I bought and all the candy we got.......needs to disappear!

I tried hiding the candy on top of the entertainment center, but Kenna saw it and just grabbed a stool and tried to reach it. That, and DJ and I know it's there! Really, I have to get rid of this candy......it is haunting me!

Family Night? What we do for our kids!

We decided to have a family day getting ready for Halloween! Ok, so maybe I should have split up some of the activities...or the two that we did, but time got away and it was the night before Halloween!
For one activity, which ended up after the cookies, we carved pumpkins, then lit them up for outside! We decided to draw the faces on first, and then cut them out.

Jaxson spent a very long time making the perfect face, Kenna just drew on the pumpkin with a marker that was almost dried out and DJ just dove in! I had a bit more thought and tried to come up with something other than the "classic" jack-o-lantern, but was only creative with the zig-zag portion.

After Jaxson finished coloring his, he decided to just leave it like that and don't cut it (we carved a pumpkin the night before and he didn't like the feel or want to get dirty so I had to do it myself). When we took them out to light them up, Jaxson got all upset because his wasn't glowing like the rest of ours! So after we cleaned up all the mess, and put everything back in order, DJ carved a face in his pumpkin so that Jaxson could light it up too! What we do for our kids right? They did turn out pretty cute!
For our second activity of the day, Jaxson and Kenna "helped" me make cookies. When Kenna stopped eating all the cutouts, we were able to bake them. We made all sorts of bats, pumpkins and ghosts! Jaxson was going to help me decorate them later in the day. Some were for the goodie bags for his preschool party. However, when the time came to "help" me decorate them.......he did one and found something better to do. So, like a good mom , I said OK and I didn't force him to help.
The problem was, now that I was decorating them alone, I could get creative....or more detailed. This being the perfectionism in myself that I love so much. So it wasn't enough to have colored pumpkins......I had to go one step further and make them jack-o-lanterns. And what is a ghost without eyes and an open mouth? You get the picture! So I finally finished around 10 pm last night, just in time to put together the goodie bags and throw in a couple cookies (only to be eaten by 4 year olds who really don't care how cute they are) and head off to bed.
Well, that all sounded fine, but then I remembered that I still had to make the fruit dip that I was signed up to bring for the party...so I quickly finished that and thought....now to bed. Oh, but wait, Jaxson is a firefighter and the costume is borrowed. There is a little name badge that goes to it, but it has another name written in permanent marker and there is no way around it to write or white out over it. So I had told Jaxson earlier in the day that I would find a new picture of a badge and and make a new one. Earlier in the day though, the printer was not working because I had torn the whole computer apart to clean it and changed the cartridge so that the badge was red and not pink! Right before bed, around 10:30, I got my masterpiece finished. I even "laminated" it with packing tape! So I sit here wondering, as I am dressed in an improvised witch's costume because it's not acceptable to not be dressed up on Halloween, why do I go to all this trouble? It's not like the kids will know that I spent 45 minutes making the "perfect" badge, or that I spent over an hour decorating the cookies, but I know! I guess it just goes into the category of "someday they'll thank me for this!"

Sign of the Times

Back in the day, I remember holding a can up to my ear connected to another can with a string. This was our phone that we pretended to be talking on. So what happened to the imagination?
I remember thinking clearly things were changing when Jaxson was 2 or so and in the backseat talking on the phone on the way home from daycare. At that point and time, I thought "this is crazy, who would have ever thought a 2 year old would be on a cell phone!" Then it got worse.....as he got older, we were instant messaging my sister on the computer and he would ask to email her. Then he got a computer TOY that says he has email and that it has a computer virus! When did this all happen?

Now days, I listen to my 4 year old! text message, send pictures over the phone and now talk on a blue tooth!

The other day, I caught him on (what now is a play cell phone) on the phone text messaging his "buddies" to arrange a party at his house later! Seriously? So today, I saw what has to be the end....he asked to talk on a blue tooth! He thought he was pretty cool walking around, playing with his toys, and talking on the phone!
I tell ya, I don't know what they are going to come out with next, but Jaxson will be pretending to use it either way......and his sister isn't too far behind!

And another thing.....the fact that the kids know we can see the result of the picture we take immediately after we take it does us no favors. We used to have to really make sure everyone was looking and smiling because we had to wait until the pictures were developed to tell how they turned out...and we couldn't go back to fix it! So the kids make funny faces and just tell me to erase it! When I take a picture, they come running over to me to look at the result. They will never know any different either!

I always laughed about those people that said "Back in my day......" I think I am gaining a new understanding for that though!

Soccer: The Final Game

Jaxson had his last soccer "game" on Saturday. He had a lot of fun, and lots of support from the sidelines. Nana & Papa and Grandma & Grandpa drove all the way from Spokane to come see him play. I think he was more worried about everyone watching him than what was really going on in the game. Last week he scored 2 goals.....though one of those he actually stole the ball from his own teammate at the goal to make. Either way....it went in! He was so excited!
Daddy had to work on Saturday so he came in his uniform and patrol car, he even had a couple buddies with him to watch. Jaxson thought it was pretty cool that the cops came to watch him play.
When they were divided into teams, Jaxson was given a blue jersey and thus was on the blue team. He walked up to the coach and asked "what team do we want to win?" I told him we want his team to win. Jaxson got all excited and ran to his dad and said "Yeah, Dad guess what, I am on the winning team!" Silly kid!
At the end of the games, they had a little award given to everyone and they even got a medal! Jaxson was so proud of his medal he was literally jumping up and down. He said "Yes, I always wanted a medal!" We had a really great time with the family, had some fun time at the park, played a few games, and ate some yummy food. We enjoyed the visit and look forward to the next!

Kids Say the Darndest Things....

Jaxson cracks me up! He says the funniest things, and I am always left to wonder "Where did he come up with that?"

Last night I was reading him his bedtime story, which happens to be a children’s picture bible right now, and he said the cutest thing. The story was about Jesus being a long ways away and having to come heal a little girl. Jaxson says “Well, God lives a long ways away too because he lives in the sky…..I would like to ride a spaceship sometime and go see him, but someone will have to watch Kenna.” I just said, “yeah, that would be cool.” At least he thought of his sister...this time.

The other day, Jaxson was sitting watching TV with his daddy and a commercial for hearing aids came on. He sat there and watched it for awhile, then came and said "Mommy, maybe you should get me one of those things because you always have to tell me 4 times and that will make me hear better! You gotta love him!

Another story...just proves he is too smart for his own good. We were at a friend's house eating dinner and Kenna kept going under the table. The table wasn't very sturdy, so I kept telling her to get out from under it. Jaxson is quite good at "tattling" every time Kenna does something. So he would tell us every time she would go under the table. Since we are trying to end the tattling, I had told him to stop and I would take care of her. He sat there a minute, seeming to be pondering, and then says; "Hey Mom, look under the table." He fully knew Kenna would get in trouble, but technically, he wasn't tattling! Kids always keep you on your toes....that's for sure!

Pumpkin Patch Fun!

Jaxson missed out on the school field trip to the pumpkin patch, so we went to one in Boise. The only problem we encountered, besides freezing cold and crabby kids, was the fact that the pumpkins had to stay at Aunt Shell's house. Well, we set out to get our own!We went to a local orchard that we get apples from regularly, which is one of the few perks of this town, and checked out their pumpkin patch. It was nothing like Green Bluff in Spokane, but it was perfect for my short-attention-spanned children, and our neighbor Mia, who joined us!

There was a small Maze which Mia and Jaxson went through more times than I can count, and Kenna even tried too.
They had some hay bales set up for a nice photo opportunity, but being who we are, the kids climbed up on top and a few pumpkins fell. Now when I say fell, I mean rolled off the hay stack, down the embankment, through the parking lot, and right into the barn! We laughed and the owner comes out and says "Did you really want this one, or do you just want me to put it with the others?" Apparently we weren't the first to cause that mishap! We did end up getting a great family photo, minus one pumpkin from the top. I can't tell you how amazing it is to have all of us looking at the camera and smiling. A miracle really!
Kenna hitched a ride in the pumpkin wagon and protected her pumpkin. She had a slight meltdown when we had to take it away to weigh it, but she recovered. All in all we had a great time. We got to go on a hay ride and Jaxson loved the tractor that pulled us. We got about 6 or so pumpkins and lots of apples. Kenna figured out at the end, that the pumpkins were just right size for a seat. It was a beautiful day and we all had fun....now for the carving!By the way, it was difficult getting any pictures of Jaxson because he and Mia were running all over the place constantly! At least they were having a good time!
