Well, the goldfish, Alena, has passed away. It was a tragic Wednesday morning at the Hale Household. Lainey has been so responsible in taking care of her pet fish. She fed her EVERY morning after eating breakfast. Wednesday morning, Lainey headed over to feed Alena, and then said, "Mommy, Alena is not in her bowl." I told her that she had to be in there somewhere, maybe she was just under the orange plant. I went over to help her spot her in the bowl.... and Lainey was right, Alena was not in the bowl! We looked on the buffet where her bowl is placed, on the cute platter that her bowl sits on, all around, and finally Lainey spots her on the tile floor under the dining room chair. OH MY!!! The tears started flowing. She was definitely not alive... she was a bit dry! I had cleaned her bowl out the day before and I guess I filled the bowl up too full because Alena jumped out of her tank and flopped her way down to the floor. It was a sad morning... Lainey cried all the way to school and cried as she told her teacher about our morning. I promised Lainey I would get her another fish on Thursday when I went to the big town.
Wednesday evening... after soccer... we had a sweet funeral for Alena. Will dug the hole and Lainey placed her in the hole. They found the perfect rock to place over her and a special stick to mark the spot. Betsy offered Luke's pet funeral services since he is almost a pro at it... but we took lots of her advice and did it on our own. We didn't go as far as to gather wildflowers to place on the grave, but all the other words of pet wisdom were taken. Will said a sweet prayer for Alena and the service ended.
Lainey was still very emotional about it, but when I brought home a NEW Alena and her new friend, Pumpkin (Emiley's name for the fish) she was so excited! I have learned my lesson.... I will not fill the bowl up to full! After the service, we can in to eat dinner. Abbey asked me what we were having and I told her chicken fajitas. Abbey says, "Its a good thing we are not having FISH... Lainey would probably cry even more!" Lainey of course didn 't think that was funny!!! Now the bad words come in... As we were eating dinner, Lainey begins to share her school day with us. She told us they have been making rhymes with certain letters like for "R" they say Ricky Rabbit Runs Races. Today was "S" day so her class had the sentences Sammy Seal Sings Silly Songs. Lainey said, "We could have made the sentence Sammy Seal Sucks." I assumed she didn't mean this "S" word in a bad way so I say. " Yes you could and you could add Sammy Seal Sucks Suckers." Lainey then informs me she did not mean to suck a sucker she meant sucks to mean that he is bad. (As she is saying this she is making the thumbs down sign) I am shocked. I begin to tell her that we do not use the word sucks in that way... Will is LAUGHING SO HARD at this point he excuses himself from the table and gets more ice. Lainey said it again and said, "Well it is an all "S" sentence.
The things they learn at school! What a day...
