Christmas 2022

We had the opportunity to join in on some service activities this year that hopefully made Christmas a little more memorable.

After caroling to an apartment of refugees downtown, we stopped off at the Giving Machine and let the boys each pick out something to donate.

A friend invited our family to join in making sack lunches to pass out on Christmas Eve morning to the homeless. We had an assembly line going for decorating the bags, making the sandwiches, and assembling the lunches. Then we drove downtown to pass them out.

My mom hosted Christmas Eve. It was a night filled with musical performances, chimes, dinner, the Nativity, white elephant game, and gift exchange.

The boys were so excited to open their presents on Christmas morning.

Caleb got lots of hand sanitizer and gum in his stocking. It should last him awhile!

Not pictured are the orbeez guns for Austin and Bryson that were supposed to arrive in time but ended up coming 2 days after Christmas even though they were ordered on December 9th!

Oral Surgery

Austin and Bryson were both born with extra baby and permanent front teeth. Bryson had 1 extra front baby tooth but 2 extra permanent teeth that were fighting for space in his gums so no permanent teeth were wearing down the roots of his baby teeth. As a 10-year-old, he still had not lost any top teeth. Austin had an extra front baby tooth and one extra front permanent tooth. He lost his extra baby tooth right before his 6th birthday when he slipped in the bathtub and banged his mouth against the edge of the bathtub. (It was traumatic!)

The day of the surgery was scheduled for Wednesday, Dec. 14th. The boys were a little apprehensive about the oral surgery but were comforted by the fact that they would be doing it together. I was a nervous wreck but had to keep that hidden from them. Austin went first and Bryson sat with me in the waiting room. They were not allowed to eat breakfast or drink any water, which was probably the worst part for Bryson sitting there waiting for his turn. I was surprised that Austin's surgery was so fast. It felt like 20 minutes after he left my side that a nurse was coming back to get me. I was so relieved when she told me everything went well that I couldn't stop the tears that slid out. Matt met us there so he could take Austin home. Austin was quite lucid and called me on the way home to tell me he was alright; he also told Bryson not to worry, that it didn't hurt. Then Bryson went back for his turn. When they wheeled Bryson out to meet me at my car, he was so cold. We turned the heat up full blast. Matt bought the boys a large Smoothie King to split and got the boys settled on the couch with a movie (Elf) before he left for work.

Showing off their teeth

Bryson had a total of 7 teeth pulled (5 baby and 2 permanent). The roots of his baby teeth were all very long, so they were not coming out on their own any time soon. The two surgeries were performed differently. Bryson's gums were flayed open after the baby teeth were extracted to pull out the extra permanent teeth. For Austin, they cut high in his gums, using an x-ray for guidance, to extract his permanent tooth. Even though Austin's seemed simpler, his healing process was slower. His mouth was puffy and swollen for the next 3 days. Bryson bled a lot the first day, constantly changing out bloody gauze, but his healing was much faster. He looked normal the next day, and you wouldn't have known something had changed until he smiled! They drank their smoothies and ate ramen noodles for lunch--lukewarm. They were starving! The day of surgery and the next day, they couldn't brush their teeth and rinsed with a special oral rinse to try to prevent infection with the stitches. The first night after surgery was rough for Austin who woke needing medicine, but Bryson slept fine through the night. Both of the boys bounced back pretty fast after the surgery. Bryson felt well enough to go to school the next day, but I was worried he would need medicine and be in pain in the middle of the day. Austin still looked so swollen that it was no question he would stay home. Friday was a half day of school. Bryson could have easily gone, but opted to stay home, which I was fine with. The stitches started falling out on their own about 5 days after surgery. A week later, you wouldn't know that Austin had any sort of surgery since he kept all his baby teeth. Bryson looks a little like a vampire with no front teeth except for the fangs of his canines. He mostly just smiles with his mouth closed now, and he has a slight lisp when he talks. We are hoping teeth will grow in soon; it could be months even up to a year for all the teeth to come in. He's handling it really well, and hopefully the kids will be compassionate and kind at school.

Thanksgiving in Destin

Last November, we made plans to go to Destin with friends for Thanksgiving. Due to Covid, the house we planned to rent at an awesome rate wasn't finished in time. Matt's friend offered us the same deal this Thanksgiving, so off we went! It was a relaxing weekend with lots of beach time, games, and chatting with dear friends.

We went out to dinner the first night in a shopping center that had this humongous Christmas tree.

How many people fit in the hot tub?

The water was too cold for me, but the kids still had fun!

For our Thanksgiving dinner we had Cafe Rio.

Fall Happenings

Bryson was the best pitcher on his team this season and thus got to pitch a lot. He improved so much!

Carter has never played football before and yet somehow made the 2nd highest team out of 5 total teams. He worked hard and grew to be really passionate about it. He played defense, outside linebacker, and really enjoyed it. The highlight of the season was when he scored a touchdown in the final game!

Trick-or-treating with friends. Austin was a baseball player and Bryson was Captain Jack Sparrow.

Proof that we do make our kids work. Ha!

The boys love dog-sitting Waffles!

Caleb ran in a turkey trot for Thanksgiving. Frozen turkeys were "hidden" along the route. We told Caleb he had to get one! He ran the last quarter mile with frozen turkey in hand and still managed a 7:15 pace for the 3-mile run.

Bryson's 10th Birthday

Bryson does such a good job watching out for his younger brother to and from school each day and just in general. He sees Austin as a peer and friend and likes to include him in everything. Bryson is a hard worker at school and sports. He is very creative and likes making forts and coming up with other imaginary play for him and Austin. As much as I love their playing together, I have to constantly nag them to clean up after themselves. Something I work with Bryson on is his moodiness. He angers easily and thinks the world is conspiring against him when anything goes wrong. It's something we may have to get professional help with at some point. The most contention we have in the family is between Bryson and Carter, whose relationship is toxic. It makes me sad, and I hope one day they will be friends. For now, we constantly tell them not to talk to each other and stay out of each other's business. Bryson loves roller coasters and is up for any adventure. I love my school lunch dates with Bryson and playing games with him while talking about his day.

Bryson and Austin end up sleeping in the same bed most nights even though they have a bunk bed. They really do have a special bond.

Austin Turns 7

Austin is a great caboose for our family. He is easy-going, fun, smart, creative, and a peacemaker. Bryson and Austin have a very special bond, and they are best friends. Austin helps to tame some of Bryson's moodiness. Because of this friendship and because he's the youngest, Austin is very mature for his age. Unfortunately he's also short for his age! Although he loves his brother, Austin's favorite person is Matt. He idolizes him and wants to be with him at all times. I sometimes joke to Matt that he can't walk to another part of the house without telling Austin first because I inevitably get the question, "Where's Dad?" He loves art because Matt loves art. He loves watching sports because Matt loves watching sports. He wants to play baseball because he knows Matt loves coaching baseball. Austin reads at a very high reading level and can read very challenging words but doesn't love to read. He performs well in school but doesn't like school. Austin cares about his handwriting being very neat, which I think is great! For how smart he is, Austin still struggles with reading notes in piano and so he hasn't loved learning the instrument. Once he learns a song (mostly by ear), then he loves to play and show it off to people. He is a picky eater and fights eating his dinner. His favorite foods are chicken and broccoli casserole, steak, and pasta. Austin has such a sweet temperament, and we love having him in our family!

The first time ever that I didn't make a homemade cake or dessert for a birthday! It just was a chaotic weekend!

Caleb's 15th Birthday

We very much appreciate the example Caleb sets for his younger siblings. He does what is right because he wants to. He looks around for ways to help, and then he just pitches in and does it. One example is if he sees the dishwasher is clean, he will automatically start emptying it--no matter whose turn it is or if he has already done it the past 3 days. I don't have to get on him to do homework, practice the piano, chores, or getting off his phone. He recognizes the importance of doing a little bit every day to improve at something--whether that's homework, piano, reading his scriptures, or exercising. Caleb has always excelled at school and seems to be good at whatever he puts his mind to. He's a fierce competitor in most every sport (natural athleticism) and board game (very smart at picking up strategies). He's responsible, dependable, kind, patient, and a peacemaker in the home. I'm not sure how much we can claim as our parenting; he just came with a very special spirit, and it's an honor to try to shape him into a worthy young man.

With all that effusive praise, he doesn't come without faults! One that cracks us up, and also scares us, is he is clueless about figuring things out for himself. If I were to ask him to scramble an egg, he would have so many questions about where to start, what pan, how to start the stove, how to crack the egg, what cooking utensil to use, etc. We're hoping to knock some common sense into him in these last few years we have with him at home. He is still a germaphobe, but has softened a bit over the years. He definitely values cleanliness still!

His presents were limited because of some recently bought new tennis shoes and the expense of his tennis lessons.

Banana cream pie is still his favorite dessert

He has a driving permit!
