Until we save up some money, we are camping out at my parent's house for awhile. (Thanks Mom!) Every night, my parents, grandmother, autistic brother (it is important to note that he is autistic so the next paragraph makes sense), husband, and children gather around the table to enjoy a delicious meal prepared by yours truly. As we all enjoy the food, the average conversation goes down something like this:
Grandma: Yummy food!
Mikayla: Yeah yummy. This is yummy, but not that stuff you made yesterday.
Jon: That's not a nice thing to say, Mikayla.
Mikayla: Well I don't like bananas!
Andrew: Yummy! Nanas! I want! Please!
James(autistic brother): I set the table.
Me: I can see that, thanks James.
Jon: So grandma, what kind of food did you make for Grandpa?
Grandma: All kinds, but since the stroke I can't even think of how to make them anymore.
Mikayla: Can I have a treat?
Me: No. You need to finish your dinner.
Andrew: Hot! A bite! A bite! NOW!
James: Corrina is a friend.
Me: Yep.
Jon: Andrew, blow on your food.
Mikayla: I really want a TREAT!
Grandma: Art always wanted me to play cards with LaDeena.
Jon: Oh, really. Who is she?
Mikayla: I can play cards, I'm really good.
Grandma: I never really liked cards much. Of course Art was sweet on me then.
Me: All guys are sweet on you, Grandma.
James: Have to wash dishes!
Jon: It's okay, James, just finish eating.
Mikayla: Don't worry Grandma, I will teach you to play cards after dinner. I'm not too old like you.
Me: Mikayla. That's not nice.
Mikayla: Well she is really old...
Jon: Andrew stop throwing you food.
Grandma: I went on my mission in 1970 with Art.
Me: That doesn't make any sense, Grandma. Chuck was still alive then, so you weren't married to Art yet.
Mikayla: I like art. I can make really pretty pictures.
Grandma: Well, Chuck's been dead nearly 30 years.
Me: 1970 was 40 years ago.
Jon: How old were you when Grandpa B. died?
Mikayla: I like paints. Do you like paints?
Jon: What are you talking about, Mikayla?
Mikayla: Coloring.
Me: Okay, Mikayla...Art was a person, not an activity.
James: Good day at work...
I could go on and on. I love dinner time. The other day it dawned on me that every dinner conversation is like that movie. and I wouldn't have it any other way.
