Last week we took our cats in for their annual check-up. Taking them to the vet can be a little pricey, so we waited for our tax refund to come. We knew that both cats would need shots, but we also knew that Ty Dye would need his teeth cleaned. Addy and Ethan headed to vet with a few things in mind to ask the doctors; mainly Ty Dye's weight loss and increase in drinking water. The doctor was concerned and wanted to do some blood work, but seemed optimistic. Addy had a sneaking suspicion that Ty had some kidney problems. We used to have a cat, Nikita, that had to be put down from kidney problems. Ty Dye has always reminded Addy of Nikita, but this seemed a little too familiar. Nikita wanted fresh, running water so much that he found a house in the neighborhood with a fountain and ended up spending the last several months of his life there. Ty Dye was starting to always be at our feet when we were in the kitchen requesting cold water from the fridge. The doctor called us on Friday and confirmed our suspicions... Ty had kidney problems, but continued to sound optimistic.
We went through the weekend, pampering Ty and giving him ALL the fresh water he wanted. We even gave in and bought a new water filter for our fridge. Addy loaded up Ethan and Ty and headed back to the vet Monday morning. We ended up seeing another doctor who didn't seem as optimistic. Ty had lost about a pound over the last few days and he was letting the doctor scrape at his teeth. The doctor felt like we should wait to do the dental procedures (avoiding anesthesia) and focus on hydrating our skinny little cat through the day and overnight. The plan was to do more blood work on Tuesday and go from there.
We waited and waited for the doctor to call us with an update. It was about 5:30 when we got the call. Ty was NOT doing well. The levels in his kidneys had risen and he continued to show more signs of kidney failure. The doctor wanted to keep him on fluids overnight once again, but we were getting concerned about cost. We didn't want to continue pumping money into a cat that was going to have to be let go. We decided to leave him one more night and bring him home the next day to say our goodbyes.
Wednesday we waited again for a call and finally called the office around 11:00. Ty was still not doing well and we were told that we could pick him up around 1:00. Addy and Ethan headed to Petsmart to get Ty some things that would help him be more comfortable - a water dish that circulates the water and some canned food. The doctor we saw was the same one that saw Ty at his check up the previous week and seemed extremely concerned. We left the office with some kitty anti-biotic, cat food for kidney problems, and Ty Dye. He seemed very depressed and was anxious to get out of the carrier when we arrived home. After getting settled, Addy walked into the Master bathroom and found Ty lying in the sink. More deja vous... Addy's cat, Teedles, from growing up spent his last few days lying in a cold bath tub. Not a good sign.
Today he seems happy to be home. He is very thin and seems that he has a stiffer neck than usual. We're hoping things change, but are preparing ourselves for the worst. Our fingers are crossed, but things don't look good.
