Riley's Gettin' Glasses

Today Alan and I took Riley to an optometrist who specializes in Therapeutic Visual Sensory Integration. Yeah, I know, I had no idea that anything like this existed. The Occupational Therapist had noticed Riley stimming around his face and especially eyes, and she thought it would be something that we could check out. It turns out that Riley is not only slightly farsighted, but he has an inability to conceptualize a whole along with its parts. This is why he likes to stare at fans and sometimes zone out on just one thing.

This particular doctor was wonderful with Riley and seemed to get all the tests done just by playing with him except for one. He actually sees 15-20 kids on the spectrum per week. He has prescribed a special prism type lens for Riley and we are getting him Flexi-glasses that hopefully can withstand a good throw during a fit. Alan and I are confident that glasses will help Riley if he wears them. That may be the hard part throughout this whole thing. He is super sensitive to the touch and he may despise the glasses. Or he may actually be able to see and don them with pride, much like these $1 Spot glasses from Target.

Here are the glasses that will most likely be the subject of many arguments and NO!'s in our house in two weeks. He looks really cute in them and when he looked at himself in the mirror with them on, he said, "Wyatt!" Wyatt is his friend at Early CLASS with glasses. I can't get enough of little Riles this week!! :)

"I Have A New Smile!"

Kylie lost her first tooth tonight and there have been tears and joy. First came the tears when she saw how much blood came out and then she wanted to call and tell people. The first thing she said after looking in the mirror was, "Hey, I have a new smile!" She is quite proud of her new look (I guess she thinks she looks more like a tomboy and less like a girly girl.) I asked her if she wanted me to pull the one next to it and she said, "No thanks. Not tonight at least."

tomorrow

Tomorrow we start back to school. UGH! I don't wanna go back just yet but I know that my body and mind will feel better once I get back....
