All is calm, All is bright

I absolutely love this time of year!

Decorating, shopping for others, wrapping presents, baking! This year was definitely a little more challenging than the past 5 years, but I still have enjoyed every minute of it. Each year I like to come up with a few more decorations, either DIY'ed or bought on sale the previous year after the holidays are over.

Here are this year's additions:

Homemade Wreath
(I can see myself adding onto it next year)

Homemade Ornament Trees

Bigger Mini Tree
(our lights went out on the old one and it was starting to get crowded)

Ornament Hurricane

And a few shots of our other decorations:

Meanwhile, after some wrestling with the printing company and trying to track down our lost Christmas cards, they are finally out and in mailboxes right before Christmas, as opposed to a couple of weeks early as intended. Here they are, created by yours truly:

I had a hard time getting any great "Christmas pictures" of Mason because the boy will not sit still. And even though I had other hopes for the Christmas card pictures, the shots I took of Mason were definitely keepers for our family photo album. Here are a few from our photo op. I am sure he will love to see these on his wedding day... bahaha.

Enough already Mom!!! Bah humbug...

Merry Christmas everyone!

Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace, good will toward men.

Eight Months Old!

Month Eight

Weight:
18 pounds (birth: 8lbs .3oz)

Length:
26.5 inches (birth: 21 inches)

Diapers:
Size 3.

Clothes:
6-9 month range.

Feedings:
Every 4-5 hours. Breast milk. 7-8 oz.

Mason loves finger foods now. He really enjoys feeding himself so we have started giving him chunks of banana, cheerios, and potatoes instead of just pureed food. He is an eating machine and still has not turned food away. The last week it seems like he has doubled his food intake, so I am guessing he is in the midst of a growth spurt.

Nights:
Mason is still consistently sleeping 11 hours each night, to bed between 7:30-8:00 and awake between 6:00-7:00 these days. Mason is back to his normal, great sleeping baby, self. For some reason most of the last month he seemed to have problems sleeping straight through the night for one reason or another.

Personality:
Mason is still such a happy and active baby. Mason doesn't like getting in his carseat and hasn't really cared for his jumper for the last several months- mainly because he is stuck in one place. He does like to play with the toys on his jumper while standing next to his jumper though.

Development:
This month has been my favorite month so far because Mason is really talking and responding to us and trying to immitate our sounds more. He also really seems to understand things now. He tries to drop his food on the ground when he sees Dusty standing there, he looks around for Chris when I ask him where Dad is, he looks at things when we point and describe them and he looks for cats, cows, dogs, etc. when we mention them. I am really loving this phase and he is sooo curious about everything.

He is still pulling up on everything, but now he can actually do so without the incidental falling. His balance has become really great and he will even stand by himself now for a few seconds at a time (as seen in the picture above!). He has taken a few steps away from the couch towards me, but he really just falls forward.

Mason still does not have any teeth! It feels like he has been teething forever and the poor guy just can't seem to cut any in yet. I know it really isn't that big of deal to have teeth yet, but it is so weird when we are around other kids his age and they have several teeth. His eyes are still blue and his hair is still blonde and getting longer and thicker by the day.

We have finally reached nap time bliss. I say finally, but I have a feeling it will revert back to a struggle at some point in the future. At the moment, though, I am going to enjoy this bliss while it lasts. For the last two months Mason would not go to sleep without wanting to stand up in his crib and walk around, which ultimately cut into his nap time, which made for a pretty cranky baby the rest of the day until his next nap when he would repeat the 30 minute laps around his crib again and wake up nearly 30 minutes later once he finally fell asleep. A couple weeks ago the light bulb finally went off in both of our heads. I decided to leave the room, shut the door and let him walk around to his little hearts content. Day 1 he walked around for the 30 minutes, then cried for about 10 minutes and finally layed down and went to sleep. Day 2 he walked around for about 5 minutes, cried for about 5 minutes and finally layed down and went to sleep. Day 3 he walked around for 5 minutes and then layed down and went to sleep. Ever since, I continue to leave the room, shut the door and Mason lays himself down and goes to sleep. No crying. Bliss. For now.

I cannot believe our little boy is 8 months old. It still feels like yesterday that he was born. I know at times I am eager for the "next stage", like walking so my back doesn't hurt so much from carrying him around or so he will stop bumping his head when he tries to walk and can't, BUT most of the time I just want him to stay the way he is right now! I am so scared I am going to blink and suddenly have a 2 year old crazy little boy running around screaming and telling me no. Unfortuntately time does not stand still, in fact, it seems to speed up when you have children.

Here is Mason with his friend Reid yesterday. Boys will be boys!

We are just so grateful to have such a happy, healthy baby. God is using this little miracle in our life to refine us and shape us into his image, loving unconditionally, patiently, and unselfishly.

Thanks be to God.

Seven Months Old!

Month Seven

Weight:
16 pounds  5 oz (birth: 8lbs .3oz)

Length:
26.25 inches (birth: 21 inches)

Diapers:
Size 2.

No more diaper issues. Mason is now an everyday kinda guy, which makes the old issue no longer an issue. Horray. We have actually started using Target brand diapers and like them, a nice mix of Pampers and Huggies.

Clothes:
3-6 month and 6-9 month range.

Feedings:
Every 4-5 hours. Breast milk. 6-7 oz.

Mason is still eating great, however, he now likes to put his hands in his mouth while eating and takes his food out with his hands so he can play with it. I am still trying to figure out how to deal with this. I know his curiosity is a good thing, and this phase will probably pass soon, but it sure does make meal time messy and a lot more complicated!

Nights:
Mason is still consistently sleeping 10-11 hours each night, to bed between 7:30-8:00 and awake between 5:30-6:30 these days, still an early riser lately like he was last month. The middle of the night waking up only lasted a few weeks last month, and thank goodness we have not had any more.

Personality:
Mason is still constantly on the go. He is still "talking", more like squeeling, but no real organized sounds yet. He has become such a cuddle bug lately. For the first six months he was a typical baby, cuddle when tired, but lately sometimes he just wants to be held and loved. I am eating it up.

Development:
Mason is now pulling up on everything, including the walls, stairs, cabinets, etc. He has tried to take a few steps but can only stand on his own without support for a few seconds, so naturally the steps don't workout. He has no fear so we have no doubt he will be walking soon.

Mason's crawling is a lot faster and more technically accurate now. The hard floors don't seem to bother him anymore and he doesn't seem to get tired. He does, however, prefer to be standing, so he will crawl to the nearest thing he can pull up on. Mason's walking from side to side while holding onto something is much better, and he rarely falls now.
Mason's eyes are still blue and his hair is still blonde and straight, but it has some curls now when it is wet.

It has gotten much easier and more predictable this month with Mason and his schedule. He is getting better about not falling asleep in the car everytime we go somewhere which ultimately ends up ruining any chance of a nap later. I love the progress but also miss his smaller stage too.

Pin-deavors!

Finally getting around to posting about my recent Pinterest endeavors. Back in September I tackled a few small things, seen here, but this month I bit off some slightly bigger items... becoming a little more brave.

The Fall Decor
(inspiration seen here)

Christmas Ornaments I
(inspiration seen here)
I used moss instead of berry stems, and I think the picture is a little misleading, it turned out really cute in person.

Christmas Ornaments II
(inspiration seen here)
Because the recipe to make these made such a large batch, I ended up making 4 ornaments (1 cup salt, 1 cup flour and 1/2 cup water): Mason's hand, Mason's foot, Dusty's paw, and our Family 2011 ornament.

Christmas Ornaments III
(inspiration seen here)
And because ornaments break, I went ahead and made another footprint for Mason.... I got a little carried away and am a little sentimental, his little foot won't fit on an ornament much longer, so why not?

I am looking forward to the next month's projects... lots more Christmas/holiday projects are in the works, including Christmas cards (remember last year's?---> check them out here), wreaths, and decor.

Stay tuned.

What about you? Tackling any projects lately?

Six Months Old!

Month Six

Weight:
15 pounds 11.5 oz (birth: 8lbs .3oz)

Length:
25.75 inches (birth: 21 inches)

Diapers:
Size 2.

Huggies seem to have helped with the diaper dilemma for the most part. They are definitely not my favorite diaper just because they are not nearly as soft and feel like a plastic bag, but the shape of them seems to be more conducive to a full diaper on a moving baby, which ultimately makes me happy (i.e. cleaner!).

Mason has a dirty diaper about every 2-3 days now... which could explain the full diaper, but according to his doctor it is perfectly normal.

Clothes:
3-6 month and 6-9 month range.

Feedings:
Every 4-5 hours. Breast milk. 6-7 oz.

Mason loves food probably as much as his mom and dad! He watches everything that goes into our mouths and grabs at anything you put in front of him. He has not turned down any food we have given him, which includes sweet potatoes, peas, bananas, pears, apples, oatmeal, zucchini, apples, butternut squash and potatoes. Next up: peaches, green beans, carrots, corn, and chicken. The only struggle we have had is finding the balance with the right amount to feed because Mason doesn't really tell us when he is full which means he ends up giving some of it back to us later...

Nights:
Mason is still consistently sleeping 10-11 hours each night, to bed between 7:30-8:30 and awake between 5:30-6:30 these days, not sure why he has become such an early riser lately. We have also been struggling with some middle of the night "need for soothing". Which we are suspecting are due to one of three things we found out about at his 6 month check-up this morning.
  1. Mason has a mosquito bite on his left eye lid which has made his eye almost completely swollen shut. I can't imagine how bad that feels and itches too.
  2. Mason also has eczema which we will have to take a few different measures to keep it under control and can be very irritable for a baby. At this point we don't know if it is just "baby eczema" or general ezcema which he would possibly have his whole life.
  3. Mason has teeth trying to come in.
So who knows which of those three has been waking him up, but luckily a pacifier and gentle touch have been enough to get him back to sleep.

Personality:
Mason is a ball of energy, wanting to move nonstop. If he is tired of crawling, he wants to be jumping or standing, or "walking" while holding onto mom and dad's fingers (he is actually able to take steps on his own) or outside watching birds. Even diaper changing has become a challenge with this little wiggle worm. He is an alert little baby and totally aware of everything around him.

Mason loves to talk these days, but we have found he is a little shy. When he is at home with mom and dad in his element he is quite a show off, talking, squealing, experimenting with his voice, but when surrounded by other kids and parents he likes to watch and listen, he definitely takes after his parents.

Development:
Mason has officially transitioned to the 2 solid naps that every mom talks about! Yay! On a typical day, Mason takes one nap around 9 a.m. give or take (depends on what time he woke up) and one around 1 p.m. give or take. And most days he sneaks in a short third nap around 5 p.m. depending on how the day has gone. I always wondered if this would happen and how it would happen, and all I can say is that gradually Mason started staying awake longer and longer. Now he eats and is normally awake 2-2:30 hours and then takes a nap. I think this will continue to gradually stretch out until we don't need the third nap anymore too.

Mason has finally found his feet, but isn't nearly as interested in them as most babies, maybe touching them once a day and never getting them anywhere near his mouth. Mason grabs our faces- lips, eyes, & nose, reaches out to pet Dusty and is even pulling up on us, his rocker, the window sill, and pretty much any other relatively short object in the house. The crib has now been lowered for the first time since I walked into his room and saw his little head peaking out at me. Did I mention he is active, active, active?!?!

The playmat has been officially retired, along with the bouncer, and soon the swing will join them. Mason now spends his time in his jumper, crawling on the floor or safely in his crib(!), maybe a few minutes a day in his swing while I brush my teeth or get dressed, sitting in his highchair with teethers or toys or on mom and dad's laps while reading books, which he REALLY enjoys doing, mostly because he can chew on them :)

At 24 weeks Mason started to "crawl". First he got up on all fours and rocked. Then he gradually would move one knee forward at a time and fall forward, and now, at 26 weeks he is full on crawling and gaining more endurance and strength and speed every single day.

Mason can also stand up on his own while leaning on a table or wall. He loves it, takes any opportunity to pull up and stand, and has started to try to walk from side to side on his own while leaning against things. He is wobbly and falls when trying to move from side to side, but we have seen big improvement already in his balance. Mason can also sit up on his own, but because that involves being still, he usually doesn't stay that way long.

Mason's eyes are still blue and his hair is still blonde and straight.

Mason's 6 month doctor appointment went well. He had more vaccinations, a flu shot, and really enjoyed the fish tank at the doctor's office. He was mesmerized!

Our little family is having the best time! Can it get any better than this? :)
