In the early 20th century, the Iglesia Ni Cristo (INC), or Church of Christ, was officially registered in the Philippines on July 27, 1914, under Brother Felix Y. Manalo’s leadership. The Church’s mission focused on preaching biblical truth, emphasizing structured worship, and encouraging members to live with discipline and faithfulness. The first congregation was organized in Punta, Sta. Ana, Manila, which soon led to INC’s spread across the city and neighboring provinces. Over time, congregations reached throughout Luzon and expanded to the Visayas and Mindanao. By the time Brother Felix passed away on April 12, 1963, INC had already built a strong network of ecclesiastical districts in many parts of the country.

A New Chapter of Expansion

After Brother Felix Y. Manalo’s passing, Brother Eraño G. Manalo took on the role of Executive Minister and led the Church into a period of significant growth. Under his direction, INC began its overseas mission, setting up its first international congregations in Honolulu, Hawaii, and San Francisco, California, in 1968. These milestones marked the start of INC’s global outreach. By the 1970s, the Church had established congregations in several North American cities, including New York and Canadian locations, as well as Guam. Europe welcomed INC’s presence in 1972 when it founded its first congregation in London. Australia became part of the mission field during the mid-1970s, while Asia saw new congregations in Hong Kong in 1974, Thailand in 1976, and Japan in 1977. In 1978, INC extended its reach to Africa with congregations in Nigeria and South Africa.

Throughout the 1980s, the Church spread to Scandinavian countries and nearby regions. In the 1990s, INC continued expanding into Latin America with congregations in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, and cities such as Rome, Jerusalem, and Athens. In the 21st century, INC reached South America with worship groups in Brazil and Peru. By the time Brother Eraño passed away in 2009, INC had grown to cover more than half of the world’s regions. Today, it unites members from 152 racial and ethnic groups across 168 countries and territories on six continents.

Central Teachings and Faith

The Iglesia Ni Cristo teaches belief in one true God, the Father, and does not accept the doctrine of the Trinity. Jesus Christ is seen as the Son of God and the Savior of humanity. The Bible serves as the only foundation of faith and practice. INC doctrine teaches that salvation requires baptism and active Church membership. Unity among members is essential, and INC teaches that remaining under the administration of the Church is necessary to be part of the true Church described in the Bible. Members also believe in the certainty of Judgment Day and await the fulfillment of God’s promise of a New Jerusalem.

Governance and Worship Life

INC is led by the Executive Minister, who provides spiritual and administrative guidance to members worldwide. The Central Office in Quezon City, Philippines, functions as the headquarters, with regional offices supporting work across the Americas, Europe, and Northeast Asia. Ecclesiastical districts help organize congregations by region, facilitating worship services, Church activities, and outreach efforts. INC has constructed around 5,000 houses of worship worldwide, serving as gathering places for members and essential parts of local communities.

Worship services occur twice a week, typically on Thursdays and Sundays, and include hymns, prayers, voluntary offerings, and Bible-based lessons. Following biblical interpretation, men and women sit separately to maintain order during services. Children aged 11 and under attend special worship gatherings designed to teach them biblical lessons at a level they can understand.

Humanitarian Efforts and Recognition

Through the Felix Y. Manalo Foundation, INC conducts various humanitarian projects, including medical assistance, education programs, and poverty relief. The Lingap sa Mamamayan program, Aid to Humanity, offers healthcare, food, and essential supplies to those in need.

In 2018, INC achieved a Guinness World Record for organizing the largest charity walk with more than 283,000 participants. In 2022, the Felix Y. Manalo Foundation received the Banaag Award from the Philippine government, recognizing its dedication to alleviating poverty and helping communities worldwide.
