Happy Thanksgiving!

Well don't I feel sheepish - - only two posts in and I don't write for 2 months!  I'm a work in progress.  Well the holiday season has been great so far, especially having little McKay to share it with.  First, October was great with my fifth (wow!) anniversary, a visit from Peter's parents, Peter's birthday, and Halloween.  I'll include the end of September too, which was when we had McKay's blessing.  It was so great to have Nana and Pa Read in town.  We had lots of fun making delicious food and playing with McKay.  They even babysitted for me twice - once so I could get out and get beautified with a haircut and once so Peter and I could go to Brio for our anniversary dinner.  That was so nice of them!  McKay received some wonderful homemade gifts, including a hand-knitted blanket that is so soft and beautiful.  Here's a picture of McKay cuddled up in it.

My mom, dad, sister, and grandparents were here as well for McKay's baby blessing.  It was very special to have everyone there.  Peter gave a great blessing.  McKay was blessed in the same clothing as his cousins, which was neat.

Halloween was a little bit lame unfortunately.  We forgot about the ward party,  didn't get costumes, and not a single trick-or-treater stopped by!  It was very sad, I love seeing little kids in costume and I have the most rotten luck with it!  Our first year of marriage in the student apartments I missed the memo to put up a pumpkin on the door if you were home for trick-or-treaters.  The second year we were gone for some reason, the third year no one came to our apartment in Spring, the fourth year we didn't know about the Texas rule of sitting on your driveway to distribute candy, the fifth year - okay the fifth year worked out, and now this on the sixth year.  :(  I even decorated our door and put pumpkins on our patio.  Next year McKay will for sure want to be in costume and go to the ward trunk or treat so I think we'll be safe.  I should work on costumes now while I remember.  Any suggestions?  McKay did have a little skeleton jumper and some other halloween outfits so here are some pictures.  The Halloween PJ's are from Nana and Pa, aren't they cute?

We went and visited my family in the beginning of November for my Dad's birthday and the election.  Our flight over was great - they moved us right behind first class so we had plenty of room, and the seat next to us was empty!  McKay was a champ as always, lots of passengers commented on what a good baby he was.  We had such a good time with Grandma Nan, Grandpa and the rest of the family.  We went shopping for cute boots and colored jeans, had a birthday party for Dad (complete with apple pie and homemade ice cream!), I went to the election party while Grandma Great babysat Mckay (GO DAD!), and we also visited Jessica and baby Luna.  I hadn't realized how HUGE McKay has become until I saw a newborn again!  Wow.  McKay's hair started to come in a lot that week, and I think it's brown.  The flight back was pretty tough after getting to the gate.  It was snowing really hard in Utah so the plane had to be de-iced, plus we had mechanical delays.  My seat was reassigned because I was in an exit row with a baby, so we ended up on the very last row (no recline, no window).  Add that to the fact that the person in front of us reclined and we were sitting next to a very large person, and we were quite claustrophobic!  So then we got to Denver and had to circle around it for an hour because of the weather.  Wow what an adventure!  McKay was an angel yet again, love that boy!

McKay has acid reflux, if I haven't mentioned that before, and that means that he doesn't feel well a lot of the time.  He has to eat quite frequently because his little tummy starts refluxing if he eats too much at a time, so naps are often short and he needs to wake up at night.  Recently though we've had quite an improvement!  I convinced his pediatrician to start him on some new medication, and I've also started an elimination diet.  I was allergic to dairy as a baby, so it follows that McKay could be as well.  And then I figured as long as I was giving up dairy for two weeks, I might as well take out all the common allergens like soy, eggs, and nuts.  I think it's been a success!  McKay has slept five hours straight twice this week!!  It may not sound like much but it's a big deal for us.  He has been eating more at a time too, and will take a bottle now to boot.  So much joy and happiness all around.  It's so hard to see your baby suffer.

On the funny side, this meant my Thanksgiving dinner consisted of turkey alone.  I have excellent timing, right??  But it's okay, I went home and made myself a consolation dinner complete with dairy-free apple crisp.  So don't feel too bad for me.  I went to Whole Foods and got myself a bunch of replacement foods.  Hemp milk is pretty good, as is rice ice cream.  Back away from the rice cheese though, bluck!  Trust me, that stuff is nasty.  If anyone has any good dairy, soy, and egg free recipes, please shoot me an email!  I'm hoping to add soy and eggs back in soon, but for now any good ideas would be appreciated.  I'm eating an awful lot of oatmeal and tuna fish lol.

So what is McKay up to right now??  His favorite thing is talking to the calendar with pictures of Jesus while we change him.  He LOVES that thing.  He just crows and smiles at it the whole time we change him.  He's also getting very interested in his hands.  He sucks them when he can make it to his mouth, and he also likes touching faces.  He loves watching the fish screen saver on my computer, and enjoys laying on his back and kicking really fast and ferociously.  He still likes baths and massages, just like when he was first born.

McKay does not like: being on his tummy for a long time, being held when he can't see the world, his car seat, and being changed in position too abruptly.  He stays awake for about an hour at a time now and naps in his swing during the day because of the reflux.

My favorite thing that McKay does right now is look up at me and do a special coo and smile that I'm just positive means "I love you."  That coo just fills you up!  Here are some more pictures of our cute little prince.

1, 2, 3!

McKay as a zombie or a praying mantis, I can't decide

It's been a whole three weeks!  It's just incredible that McKay's been with us that long; it seems like we just came home.  These weeks have been full of firsts - first walks, first baths, first outings, first bottles, you name it!  It's been so fun (and tiring!).  McKay is still a very sweet boy, and is especially nice to me at night.  He only wakes up to eat, does so in a jiffy, and we're down to only one and a half wakings a night, at 2:00 and the half being 5:00 because I'm not really sure if that should count or not.  I'm definitely not ready to start the day yet, but it's pretty much morning!

Daytime is another story, the crib has been labeled a danger zone - get within ten feet and you'll wake him from the deepest of slumbers!  He mostly likes to be held all day, although by 1:00 he'll endure the swing for a while.  We like to go for a walk in the morning, and in the late afternoons he enjoys being carried around in a wrap.  I'm sure not getting much done besides taking care of him (a shower and maybe some dishes or laundry), but I suppose that's okay at this point.  I don't know how you could possibly handle a newborn with other kids too - wow, you moms are amazing!

So I was so scared to go to the pediatrician again after my last experience and without my mom here to help!  It was a mixed bag - McKay is growing splendidly and no diaper drama occurred, but I learned a little bit about the "mother bear" feeling my mom has told me about.  We were kept waiting for almost 45 minutes again (with poor McKay stripped down and cold) and I got a wee little bit upset.  :(  It didn't help that we had to do the heel stick that day.  He actually had to have two sticks because the first one didn't bleed enough, incidentally because the hot pack they put on his foot to thin the blood had cooled down by the time the doctor came!  He was an ANGEL by the way, didn't even cry for the first stick, and just let out a little squawk for the second.  Contrast the baby the next door down, who wailed for ten minutes!  Anyway, I was a little curt in expressing my concerns about making me wait with a cold, hungry baby for that long and I thought "wow, this isn't like me at all!"  Then I realized the power of the mother bear factor.  Hurt my baby and I'll go kung fu momma on you!

McKay is now 8 lb, 9 oz (as of Monday on my kitchen scale haha!) and 21 inches.  He's 70th percentile for height, about 50th for weight and head size.  I had a 90th percentile head, so I guess he takes after Peter there.  He actually looks a lot like Peter this week I think.  His legs and arms still haven't chunked up yet, but his cheeks are getting nice and fat.  His hands seems very large to me this week, and I am in love with his little toes!

Oh, and Peter started law school two weeks ago!  He's really enjoying it, especially his Torts class.  He's gone all day but comes home in time for dinner.  In the evenings he plays with McKay a little bit and then studies.  We throw in a warm chocolate chip cookie break here and there.  :)

Peter likes to hold Mckay while he reads his books

He's got a good grip!  It's amazing to see his little hands next to Peter's.

All bundled up for bed

Very first bath, he loved it!  He's so patient.

Dear Little Mckay

 Hello!

It's been almost three years since I last posted, amazing!  So our whole Texas experience has been pretty much skipped - sorry about that.  I always feel like I need to catch up in order to start blogging/journaling again, and that idea has kept me from posting since it's so overwhelming!  But I made a promise to my dear friend that I would start this up again, and I can't imagine a better first post than to introduce you all to my sweet baby Mckay.

Mckay was born exactly one week ago, August 16th!  Happy one week birthday!  What a week it has been, and I am so blessed.  Mckay was so wanted, and we couldn't be happier.  In general, some observations about Mckay: he has a very laid back and sweet disposition, like his father.  He rarely cries unless he has good reason, and he loves to stare and me and his grandma during hour+ long wakeful periods.  He is the most beautiful baby that ever was, with a very round head, a nose like daddy, lips like mommy, and light brown peach fuzz hair that might come in blonde.  He's also a very good eater and likes to cuddle a lot.

I have some memories from his first week that I'd like to share.  First, his birth was an amazing experience!  I was able to deliver him naturally (my goal was to make it half way, but things got quick there at the end), and as a result I felt very present and involved during the experience, which was incredible and very spiritual for me even through the pain.  I went into hard labor around 7 pm on Wednesday the 15th, we made it to the hospital just before midnight, and about six hours later Mckay arrived!  The last four minutes were the hardest - I dilated from a 7 to a 10 and delivered, but it was great that it happened so fast!  Mckay weighed 7 lb 11 oz and measured 19.75 inches long (Peter narrowly won on the weight estimate, and I narrowly took length).

Recovery has been great with the help of my mom here the last week.  She's been an utter angel and has helped me to catch up on sleep and energy.  There's nothing like Tres Leches Cake and homemade Cafe Rio Pork Salads to help you get back to 100%!  I'm sure I haven't thanked her nearly enough, so THANKS MOM!

Funny story for the week - mommy is not so good at changing diapers.  It's pretty pathetic.  I think I changed some diapers for my youngest sister, but I was eleven and girls are much easier!  So I have a grand announcement - Mckay made it through a whole 24 hours in the same outfit - yeah!  I went through about 8 a day the first few days (and everyone said I wouldn't need a lot of newborn clothes - ha!)  My mom still has to rescue me sometimes when I or clothes get sprayed, but I hope I'll get the hang of it eventually.

On the same note, going to the pediatrician's office was traumatic!  I brought two spare diapers and a mini-pack of wipes, no spare outfit and no spare blanket.  Result: Mckay ended up naked (well, the pediatrician gave me a diaper) in the carseat on the ride home and I was in tears!  Who would have thought no clothes would be spared and three diapers would be soiled?  I have a lot to learn!  I'm sure it won't happen again now that the diaper bag has two spare outfits, a spare blanket, a big ole thing of wipes, and five spare diapers.  Take that!

Thanks so much to all who have offered their well-wishes and support for Mckay, Peter, and me.  Life has been quite an adventure the last couple of months!  I will never forget the service of those who helped us through the move, celebrated the upcoming arrival of Mckay, provided a listening ear, and continue to be the best friends and family ever.  Thank you from the bottom of my heart.  And with that, enjoy some pictures!

Hard News...

As some of you may have heard, we've had some bad news about Peter's health. Peter was diagnosed with scoliosis when he was young, and it's progressed to the point where he will need surgery if he gets any worse. If this happens, he will have a permanent rod in his back from his neck to his tailbone. Luckily, we've found some great doctors who are going to help him delay this as long as possible. We're hoping for the best - it's very encouraging that Peter's made it this far without being in a lot of pain.

Hopefully we'll see some great progress in the next few weeks - I'll keep you updated!

Here are some pictures of Peter's x-rays:

This is looking straight on at his lower back.

Upper/middle back

The line the chiropractor has drawn shows the shape of Peter's neck. The line should be shaped like a "C", arching backwards. As you can see, it's pretty vertical, even tilting forward at the top. Peter's head was also not attached correctly to the top of his neck, so that's being adjusted as well.
