Bellini's

The Bellini was first invented in 1948 at Harry's Bar in Venice Italy. Giuseppe Cipriani was the head bartender at the time and he loved Italian White Peaches. He worked long and hard trying to develop a perfect cocktail which would use them as a base, then he tried the simple combination of pureed white peaches and prosecco. He knew it was IT!

I personnally think that one should NOT use French Champagne when making Bellini's as it's too rich of flavor and usually it is not a good match for such a fruity cocktail. A light, fruity, Italian style sparkling wine is the perfect accompanyment to the peach puree. A good Asti Spumanti would be perfect!

A true Bellini is a refreshing drink. Don't confuse it with a Mimosa. It has nothing to do with it as people use orange juice and often juice from a carton which isn't all that great to start with.

I've search in my cook books, on the net for Bellini's recipes and I could not really find THE recipe so I decided to try it myself...I just put some beautiful peeled, ripe white peaches in the blender. I did not add anything. I just pureed it to a very thin consistency.

Measurments should be:
1 ounce white peach puree
5 ounces chilled champagne

EARTH, FIRE AND WATER

EARTH
FIRE

WATER

So what are they? 3 of the 4 elements? Where is air? Well that is a very good question...but I am not really talking about the elements as such...I am talking about Deepa Mehta's films. I heard they are the most beautiful films ever...so I went a did a little research...

So who is Deepa Mehta?
It appears, she has become the voice of a new India, but India has a difficult time accepting what she has to say. Due to her bi-cultural roots (she was born in Amritsar in 1950 and moved to Canada in the early seventies) she has become one of India's most controversial and taboo-breaking filmakers. It is said that women salute her and that men often dispise her. It is reported that a man shouted "I am going to shoot you, Madam" in 1996 after the première screening of the movie "Fire" the first movie to explore female homosexuality in modern/contemporary India.

In 1998 Earth came out. Ms. Mehta showed religious intolerance and violence that erupted among Sikhs, Muslims and Hindus during the partition of India and Pakistan in 1947. The movie was better accepted by the Indian community, in large part because it was set in the past and because it investigated the effects of colonialism.

Fire is a tale of two vital, beautiful women breaking their cultural obstacles and being reborn through the passion they express for each other. Their relationship is forbidden, but it is by giving into. It is supposed to show the struggle between tradition and new ideas.

But Water, the final film in Ms Mehta's trilogy on the elements, sparked controversy even before filming started. The shooting was supposed to take place in the holy city of Varanasi in 2000, because the "widow houses" still exist there but violence from local political parties and Hindu extremists forced Ms Mehta to retreat. Shooting resumed only years later in Sri Lanka. Even there, the movie had to be shot under a false working title. The story is told through the eyes of a six (6!!!) year old widow. It tells the story of Indian women who are labeled as worthless because their husbands have disappeared. Forced to live in a house of confinement, they often turn to prostitution to survive.

It appears that in Earth, Ms Mehta's explored the taboo of religious extremism, in Fire, she explored the taboo of female homosexuality then in Water attacks the taboo of social humiliation of women.

Does that mean that Ms Mehta’s movies will make a difference in todays society?

In the meantime I would love watching these films...Mim, thank you so much for telling me all about them. I got so curious that I decided to conduct this "little research project" and post it on my blog.

Have any of you seen any of them? If so I would love to hear your comments about them.

I am trying to find a DVD of the first two and cannot wait for Water to come out on the big screen here in Luxembourg!

One Big, Happy Family

One of my fellow blogger has question our ability to "parent" both our little girl and Pashmina...

Here is an interesting article on how we can help our four legged fur face babies accept the new addition to the familly.

http://www.adoptivefamilies.com/articles.php?

The article is by FRAN EISENMAN and appeared in www.adoptivefamillies.com

Interestingly enough we followed her recommendations instinctively.

We have also sent our little Princess photographs of us all including Pashmina, our house, her room, her bed, my car, an airplane (inside and out). Apparently she seems to be very interested looking at the pictures but she keeps on looking at Pashmina and saying: "NAI" which means dog in Tamil.

Delhi - 550 varieties of the "king of fruits" / 550 variétés du "Roi des fruits"

I cannot believe there is actually a 2 day mango festival in Delhi and that more than an thousand (1000) varieties of this fruit exist is incredible! I thought there were only 5 or 6 varieties world wide! I remember in the Philippines we use to have orgies of them...for breakfast, snack, in the afternoon with tea, desert...yummy! The taste of them has nothing to do with the stuff we find here in normal grocery stores.

India Juvenile Act: Changes in adoption process

One of my fellow blogger, Sandra, found this most interesting link on Adoption (laws) changes in India. Indeed, a report from New Delhi states that the Union cabinet approving amendments to the Juvenile Justice Bill of 2005 should, if approved by Parliament, cut red tape and increase the number of agencies working in the country.

We still don't have a due date!

Still no precise date...maybe the 3rd week in August...but they tell us not to book flights as of yet.

They talk about practical stuff...hotels, taxis versus drivers, vaccinations, medicine, clothes for her...Mark signed the official Escort papers and we received the list of documents we will need for the final adoption process here in Luxembourg. I guess this is about it.

Just wish we could get enduced NOW!
J'aurai tant voulu qu'on nous provoque MAINTENANT!

Rendez vous 9h30 à l'Association / 9.30 am meeting at our Agency

To discuss the final stages of our delivery...

We might finally get a due date! On connaîtera peut-être la date du terme! (enfin!)

More later...A+ Je file

ANOTHER BEAUTIFUL POEM

I remember reading this poem a while ago and thought I had saved it. Could not find it any more until today...

Here it is:

Legacy of an Adopted Child

Once there were two women who never knew each other.
One you do not remember, the other you call Mother.

Two different lives shaped to make you one.
One became your guiding star, the other became your sun.

The first one gave you life, and the second taught you to live it.
The first gave you the need for love. The second was there to give it.

One gave you nationality. The other gave you a name.
One gave you talent. The other gave you aim.

One gave you emotions. The other calmed your fears.
One saw your first sweet smile. The other dried your tears.

One sought for you a home she could not provide.
The other prayed for a child and her hope was not denied.

And now you ask me, through your tears,
the age-old question unanswered through the years.

Heredity or environment, which are you a product of?
Neither, my darling. Neither. Just two different kinds of love.

A shakira on Lake Nagin

A Shakira in Kashmir is like a Gondola in Venice but better...one can lie down on the double bed! It's just haven! One feels like Maharajah and Maharhina!

The Best Book on Adoption!

This is by far the best book I've read on Toddler adoption. I highly recommend it!

In this book, Mary Hopkins-Best, a child developmemt expert and a mother of a child adopted as a toddler, provides a guide book or shall I say a bible for people who are (considering) adopting toddlers.

Jayne, I said I will lend it to you...but I won't...this book is too precious...I've just ordered you a copy as I am sure we will both want / need to refer to it often.

A BEAUTIFUL POEM...

A poem by Christine Futia as she awaited the arrival of her first child, Leo, from India...

I guess it sums it all up!

Song of the Waiting Mother

I'm pregnant, but my tummy isn't growing,
And no one ever calls me "Little Mom."
The public simply isn't overflowing
With questions that I'd handle with aplomb.

There are no special clothes to mark my waiting.
Nobody stops and smiles as I pass by.
The absence of a due-date is frustrating
And looking at the nursery make me cry.

When I am overdue no one will worry.
The phone won't ring and ring as friends check in.
I can't induce my labor in a hurry,
My new life as a parent to begin.

Adoption is a worrisome endeavor,
And waiting all alone is not much fun.
To be "with child" a year seems like forever.
Dear God, we're ready! Please send us our son!

36 Billion Dollars

36 Billion Dollars! I don't think one realise what 36 Billion Dollars is or feels like having!?

I read somewhere...if you are the world's second richest man, who would be the best person to look after this huge amount of money? Yes you are right the RICHEST man: Mr Gates himself...El Supremo! But what I find amazing is that he put his ego aside and gave most of his money to Bill and Melinda Gates' foundation.

So this past week I was reading all about this multi billion dollars transaction and I learned a new word...Billanthropy...I then realized how little I knew about the foundation. What is it they do really? I knew they had some program on Malaria, I knew they had a program about libraries and education but that was it. So I decided to make a little research...

The foundation has different areas of activities. They concentrate on:

GLOBAL HEALTH
Aiming to accelerate the access of vaccination (they managed to reach so far 78 million children with vaccines for diseases such as hepatitis B & yellow fever and nearly 8.7 million children with vaccines for diseases like tetanus and diphtheria). In Pakistan alone, their initiative has helped prevent tens of thousands of babies from dying of tetanus.

Aiming to accelerate the access of medicine and other medical support to help fight disease in developing countries.

Aiming to support research; hoping to discover new solutions that are affordable and effective. For example Malaria vaccine research - see: www.malariavaccine.org

Aiming to educate women and protect them against HIV/AIDS. They have a program in Botswana and another one in India. In India, they help support different projects in the areas of India's national highways and 6 states where high rates of infected people are located. They manage to reach, every months tens of thousands of people who are at high risk of being infected with their prevention program by offering HIV/AIDS education, treatment of STD, they distribute clean needles and syringes and last but not least condoms. I just could not believe how many condoms were being distributed to date...4.2 million according to their website.

EDUCTION
This program appears to be aimed at US Nationals. The Foundation is dedicated and committed to raising the high school diploma / graduation rate in the US helping teenagers regardless of their race, family income, background to get an education. I recently read an article on how many kids in the US are high school dropouts. The numbers are staggering! It came close to 40%. When asked whom their 1st president was, a high number of teenagers could not answer the question yet they all expect to party like crazy on the 4th of July!

GLOBAL LIBRARIES
It aims to give the Public access to information and therefore increases access to things such as technology in low-income and or disadvantaged communities. This program is divided in two sections, the US Library Program and International Library Initiatives.
For the US program they have for example helped re-build libraries in Louisiana and Mississippi after the tragedy of Katarina.

To conclude, surely an extra 36 million dollars could make amazing things happen and a huge difference, accelerate medicine and vaccinations programs worldwide, educate people about STDs and AIDS infection, build lots of libraries, help teenage kids but with 36 extra million dollars, isn't it a huge risk they run? I guess I will ask my DH and ask him what he thinks he who has worked in Banking for so many years and was at one point the head of Risk Management in different organisations. I am intrigued of what he will say. But my fear is all is good now and all will be good until the 3 new trustees (BG, MG and WB) will die...and then what? How do we know the foundation will be managed properly? How will we know if the new management are true philanthropists? I guess only time will tell. In the meantime all I can say is:

GOOD LUCK Mr and Mrs GATES and thank you for what you are doing...helping make this world a better one for our children.
