yes, i am a slave

I was sitting at dinner the other night and my brother in law, Adam, announced that they had updated their blog-something i would know little about since my last post was in October! I then got chastised for not updating this thing! Am I a slave to blog posts? the answer is yes. So here I am once again, jumping back on the blog bandwagon. You might be asking yourself, "why has janet not blogged for the past 2 months?" I will tell you my friend-I am not only a slave to blogging, but life, stress, fun, school, homework, church, sleep, and whatever else takes up my time. Here are a few highlights of what has been going on:

I got a hair cut and bangs

I got called to be relief society president and I have the best counselors! I love them!! This calling has made me busier than ever, but it is wonderful. Many great stories have already come out of this calling. Just ask!

I finished my first semester of nursing school. Thats right-1/4 nurse!! We (nursing friends that survived 1st semester) went to brick oven to celebrate on the last day of our finals.

Threw our tradional chocolate party with Becca and Allie

Lost at the ward chili cookoff! My chili was brewing for two days!!! Don't worry-canned chili won. Nalley brand-so dont waste your time cooking, go grab a can!

Mastered the waltz jump!!

Move over Michelle Kwan

When I was younger, I loved Michelle Kwan (the figure skater). I would watch everything she did, read her books, even had her autograph framed! Most of my family and friends thought I outgrew my obsession for Michelle Kwan years ago. Well...they were wrong! I have taken my love for Michelle Kwan one step further and I signed up for figure skating at BYU! After only 6 weeks this is what I have achieved! Move over Michelle Kwan!

food anomalies

There is nothing that I love more than finding cool, weird, abnormal food things! I recently made a bowl of popcorn and while I was eating it what did I find? A piece of popcorn that looked like a bird! Very cool!

This picture is from awhile ago...but I still love it! A double banana! Two bananas in one peel! Oh the simple things in life!

Its official

Yes, it is official. I am a student nurse who has worked with REAL patients! Lets see, I showered someone, changed a brief, took vitals, dressed, fed, and even took a break to eat at Wendy's! Its not easy working in the locked unit (sounds scarier than it is) but with my mad nursing skills...it was no problem. (ok, acutally i was completely pooped by the end of my shift!) And...Yes, I would appreciate it if you started referring to me as Nurse Janet.

Safe...thanks to Mike

I have moved apartments and my new walk to campus includes an area known as "rape hill." There is even a sign there that says do not walk alone at night because it is not safe. But what is a girl to do? That is the pathway to my house! Luckily, Mike found a solution for me. Pepper Spray! Yes, I have become one of those women who carry pepper spray with them in their purse! It is almost as good as the buddy system! (I don't think anything bad has happened on the hill for 20 years or something like that, but better safe than sorry!)

STAIRWAY

Last week I did the Stairway to Heaven hike! It was amazing! We got up at 3:45Am and got to head of the trail about an hour later. It was really hard-the hike is straight up the mountain...and its stairs. 4000 to be exact. The views were spectacular! It was definitely worth it!

Sunset at Sunset

After a very busy day of fun beach activites, we ended up at Sunset beach to watch the sunset. We even saw a seal!

The fateful jump

I finally did it! I conquered my fears and jumped of the rock at Waimea Bay. I was getting ready to jump when another girl asked if I wanted to hold hands and jump because she was scared too. I figured that that would be fine. Well...back in the day when I used to go bridge/cliff jumping all the time I never held hands with anyone, so I didn't really know what i was doing. Some might say that is common sense, but apparently not for me. She jumped before me, but we were holding hands, so it threw off my balance...in the end...I hit the water sideways! Yeah...I probably won't be jumping off the rock again.

You can't tell, but the whole inside of my leg was instantly bruised.

Rip off

This summer term i spent nearly $200 on books. You would think that i would get a good chunk of money back. NO! I got $17 back! ok...enough complaining, but that does kind of seem like an injustice to me!

Zoo pics

After several attempts to load some pictures, here they are!

Finally, THE ZOO

Since I came out here, I have wanted to go to the Honolulu zoo. I made several attempts, but they all failed for various reasons-none of which were my fault. Then finally, a new date was set to go-Friday. I am all ready to go. I was getting picked up in twenty minutes and my beach bag was already packed. Then I get the text-"I locked my keys in the car" After several attempts to get into the car, a locksmith was called. he would be there in 10 minutes. Well that is hawaiian time once more, so really about an hour later he came. We were still able to go to the zoo and it was so fun! Its right off Waikiki beach too. After we spent a couple hours at the zoo we headed over to the beach. A fun day for sure!

I don't like hair

Ever since I was a child, I have disliked hair. It is fine when it is on someones head, i.e. attached, but anywhere else is gross. I used to hate it when my brothers would get their hair cut because there would be little hair pieces everywhere, all over the counter and in my food! Even when they would say that they had cleaned it up, there was also some hair left. As i have grown older, and more mature (haha), I have somewhat grown out of this. At least I don't make a huge deal out of it. Ok...keep that in mind for the next part of the story. So some friends and I went to get dinner in Haleiwa at Cholos, a Mexican restaurant. It was good, I got a chicken taco salad. I have eaten most of it when I feel something really gross in my mouth-YES A HAIR! I am trying to stay calm, but all of my childhood fears came back to me! It was the sickest thing! I spit all of the food that was in my mouth out into a napkin. I wanted to throw up. I didn't, I just stopped eating my salad because I was way too grossed out to eat anymore. Finding a hair in your food has to be one of the sickest things ever! At least we got a picture of us before the gross hair incident-otherwise i would have had a frowny face!

Body

Tuesday was spent in Honolulu at the Bodies exhibit! It was so fun! I took me back to the days of anatomy lab-which I loved so much. The only downer is that they don't let you touch anything and I had forgotten a lot of things. Time to brush up on my terminology before school starts! The grossest thing at the exhibition was a teratoma. I had read about them, but never seen a real one. Basically it is a tumor that grows other kinds of tissue and even organs, although that is rare. They generally contain hair, teeth, and bone! I know I am going to be a nurse, and I am supposed to be able to handle these types of things, but i think it was one of the sickest things i have ever seen in my whole life! Here are some pictures so you can get an idea of what they are like! They are even grosser in person.

Pioneers and Shark's Cove

Saturday morning we got up and headed to the ward activity-a hike to honor the pioneers. My roommate and I, both being mainlanders, did not take into consideration hawaiian standard time! Something to remember next time the ward has an activity at 8AM. We had breakfast there, something called coco rice. Basically it is rice, chocolate, and coconut milk. Pretty good! The hike was great and the view beautiful! Drea and I explored tons, got lost a few times, but eventually did make it down. When we were at the top, as a ward we talked about what we can do to help save marriage in California. It is amazing to think that when the proclamation on the family came out it seemed so basic, but now, the things it talks about really do need to be defined!! Here in Hawaii we have been asked to donate money to the save marriage campaign. After the hike we had a BBQ. We got to take home lots of extra food and coco rice!

After the hike we went to shark's cove! It was so fun and i even jumped (was pushed) off the rock two times!

BYU where?

I am proud to say that I have now attended all three BYUs! BYU Idaho, BYU Provo, and BYU Hawaii. I think it is pretty neat! The great thing is, they are all so different! I have learned so much at each one and have loved them all!

The most fun I have ever had!

I went skydiving!! It was so fun!! Here are a few pics and movie clips so you can share in the fun!

ALRIGHT! ALRIGHT! ALRIGHT...HEY!

I got the privilege of being a building counselor for EFY here is Laie! It was such an amazing experience! I learned so much from the kids! I was in charge of the musical program and it was fantastic! My kids sang so well! I was so proud of them!! I loved learning and remembering to rely on the Lord this week as I was still in school too and things were very busy. I am so blessed!

Laundry

Things are done a little differently here is Laie, Hawaii. I have to pay to do laundry...so instead I decided that i will now wash all of my clothes in the sink. So far it has worked out nicely. And I am getting in touch with my pioneer roots!

4th of July!

The fourth was great!! Not only was it a day off from school, I didn't even do any homework!! I went to the beach with friends and got buried in the sand. Then we went to turtle bay to watch fireworks. Drea, my roommate, and I explored around the resort while we were waiting for it to get dark. It was beautiful! Before the show a HUGE rainstorm came through. I have never seen if rain so hard before in my life-that is including 18 years of Seattle rain too. So we ran for cover...unfortunately it took me a little longer to get to cover. So needless to say, I was very wet. After the rain stopped, we watched fireworks!! Then we hit up foodland for treats and went to celebreate a friends birthday! We played twister-one of my faves!

Letter...thanks Mom

I got a letter today! It was from Sister Alexander! It was so fun to get a letter here in Hawaii and hear from Becca. She is doing great and is loving her mission. I felt like I was a missionary because I was so excited to get a letter! Other high points from this week include going to the temple, seeing a beautiful sunrise, and making cookies!

Fish

For all of those who know me (and I am mostly speaking to Mom, because she is the only person who reads my blog currently) know that I HATE seafood. But today I became a real women- I ate raw fish. I got the pictures to prove it! Some friends got together and we fired up the grill. We made grilled pineapple, carrots, and corn!
