16 Months

I can't believe this little guy is already 16 months old!  He officially turned 16 months old last week, but we were in the middle of sickness and I was too busy cuddling my babies to post about him. :)

Oh, he is so so funny.  His little grin and teasing personality literally light up our house.  We laugh with him and at him more times a day than I can count.  The girls were playing dress-up the other day, and Briggs always tries to grab whatever they stop using for even 2 seconds.  This day it happened to be the Ariel wig.  He grabbed it, ran to me, and I helped him put it on.  About then the girls noticed and he took off running.  I snapped this picture as I caught him running around the corner, so proud of himself for torturing those girls.

He is BUSY.  Right now, the attention span is generally in the 60 second range.  Occasionally(with certain books, cars or his tool set), he lasts for a few minutes, but then he is off and running, finding something new to keep his little hands busy.

Words he says:
Need
More
Please
Done
Ball
Hat
Foot
Book
Hand
Kiss
Bottle
Grandpa
Daddy
Mom
Emma
Horsie
Booties(boots)
Coat
Four-wheeler
Football
Touchdown

Briggs is still very obsessed with four-wheelers and horses.  Jared's dad takes Briggs for a four-wheeler ride every time we visit, usually just to go feed his horse and around the neighborhood.  Rain, snow or shine, they are dedicated.  Briggs' eyes are often watering, cheeks red, hands cold, but he still throws a fit if we take him off the four-wheeler before HE thinks he is ready to get off.  He loves going outside and will take any opportunity he can to run out the door.

The things they say...

Some cute things the kids have said/done lately...

EMMA

Yesterday Emma did something silly, Jared said, "Where did we get you?!"  Without missing a beat she replied, "Bethlehem."

One of her favorite Living Scriptures videos is Ruth, and we overheard her telling Maddie as she tucked her in with a blanket on the couch, "Where you go, I'll go.  Where you stay I'll stay.  Your people will be my people.  Your God will be my God."  So sweet.

Last week it was, "Maddie, we'll always be friends, forever." (Fox & the Hound)

MADELYN
The kids were watching a movie on the car dvd player while we ran a few errands the other day.  They were totally engrossed, and I didn't even think they noticed as I pulled into the drive-through window at the bank.  I rolled down the window and began my transaction.  The woman at the window said, "What can I do for you?"  Maddie spoke up from behind me and said, "Can I get some french fries?!"

Jared's Dad had a horse pass away.  Maddie said, "Shiloh is in Heaven now, he's not sad.  I save my money and buy Grandpa another horse so he not sad, either."

BRIGGS
Briggs is a little talker these days, too.  He likes to say, "I need, need" when he wants something.

While watching football(and other random times), he throws his arms up in the air and yells, "Touchdown!!"

He has also mastered the art of tackling.  If he throws you the ball, he then runs full speed at you yelling, "TACKLE!" and has exceptional technique in taking down even the largest target.

The Daniels Way

Yes, that is our little Maddie.  In the middle of some wrestling matches going on between her Uncle Derek and his 3 boys(13, 11, and 9 yrs.), Maddie jumped in and attacked Derek like that.  We were all laughing so hard and I'm so glad Kyle snapped a picture of it.  Too funny!

First "Big" Snow

At the time, all of this snow was kind of a big deal.  We hadn't had anything too substantial, and it hadn't snowed too much in Howe, the roads on the way back were pretty much bare, too.  So I was surprised when I turned onto the road leading to our neighborhood to see this.

And then I turned into our actual neighborhood, and there was even more.  This is our street.

And nothing better than seeing our house and yard covered in a blanket of beautiful, clean snow.  No tire tracks, footprints or anything else yet.  Beautiful, huh? : )

80th Party

We celebrated Jared's Grandpa's 80th birthday a couple of weeks ago.  The girls were having fun dancing with their cousin Addison while we finished setting up.

Time for a Check-Up

We added the girls onto our dental insurance plan this year, decided it was time to take them.  Last night/this morning all three kids had nasty colds.  Luckily my friend who was awesome and watched Briggs for me on short notice has a little boy with the same nasty cold, so that worked out great.

Even thought they weren't feeling the best, the girls were GREAT.  I can't imagine their first appointments going more smoothly than they did.

Maddie somehow drew the short straw and went first.  The hygienist was very kid-friendly, and talked her through every single step, from the gloves she wore, testing out the chair, feeling the different tools before she used them and just being overall perfect.  Maddie patiently did every single thing she was asked, and her cleaning went very fast.  No cavities, either. :)

Emma was more than happy to go next after watching Maddie make it look so easy.  She wasn't a fan of the water being sprayed in her mouth.  She was still cooperative, just made some hilarious faces.  No cavities for her, either.

After they had their cleanings, they both sat in the chair to watch TV.  I snapped this picture while they were intently watching Dora.  When the Dentist came in, he just did their check-up while they sat in the chair together.  It was very sweet.  Glad to have that over with and have it go so smoothly!

Snow Day

On Thursday morning it started snowing and really never let up, for more than 24 hours.  It was actually a snow day for the school district.  We got around a foot.  Our driveway is a little unique, and it is about 75 yards long, so it can get messy in the winter.  I was having a meeting at my house Friday afternoon, so Jared(and a very kind neighbor) worked very hard to clear our driveway and parking spaces with 4-wheelers, even going out again at 6am Friday morning.  It still snowed a little more on Friday morning, so the kids and I went out to shovel and play in the snow a little bit.  Emma and Briggs really enjoyed shoveling.  Briggs would have done it all day, and I would dump the snow off of the shovel when it got too hard for him to push anymore.

Ordinary Days

The kids disappeared into the girls' room, and were so quiet for so long, I went to check on them.  This is what I found...

Emma and Maddie were on the top bunk having a little picnic with a variety of play food and dishes and some of the nativity set(?).   I think they may have been escaping their little brother.

Briggs can often be found with a stack of books on the bottom bunk.  This boy's attention span literally lasts 60 seconds, with the exception of this particular activity, which has lasted as long as 30 minutes!

Oh, how I LOVE this picture!  Just wish I hadn't taken it with my cell phone!  If one of the girls asks Jared to dance with them, Briggs hops up and goes running to the other girl to be their dance partner.  Sweetest thing EVER!  And a regular occurrence, at least a couple times a week.
A picture of just Maddie and Briggs dancing away.  Oh, and proof that occasionally that boy DOES wear at least SOME clothes! :)

Faith of a Child

This girl never ceases to amaze me.  Whether it is offering deep insight into something, caring for her siblings, showing how to be a good friend, consoling someone when sad, or sharing her testimony of the things she knows, I learn from her everyday.  If I'm paying attention, that is.

This picture depicts her and some of her stages right now so perfectly.  She loves Cinderella, above all other princesses.  She loves to color, and is a perfectionist.  She is always the last to finish coloring at pre-school, home and in primary.  She is obsessed with modesty, so you can see she is wearing a random shirt under her favorite spaghetti strap nightgown so she can be modest.  She has a LOT of hair.  It is past her shoulders, but it is just SO thick, and she manages to get it tangled doing anything, so I do lots of "princess" hair.  Seriously, I'm ready to do their hair for prom with all the practice I get!

A few months ago, I was laying by Emma during her quiet time.  We were just talking and out of the blue she said, "Mom, I don't know if I'm going on a mission or not."

I told her that was ok, she can be a missionary right now.  We talked about some of the things my little sister is doing while on her mission.  When I said that she was sharing her testimony, Emma interrupted me and said, "Can I do that?!  At church?  In front of everyone?"

We talked about it and I explained the rule that Jared and I have, our kids are welcome to bear their testimony's as soon as they are big enough to go up and do it all by themselves.  But I told her she can bear her testimony to anyone anytime she wants to.

That very day she started practicing.  Maddie picked up on it, too.  They stand up(usually on something), and share their sweet testimonies.  They vary, but usually include that they know the church is true and something about their family.  Emma has shared her testimony with friends, grandparents, cousins, and really anyone who will listen.  The Young Women were assigned to clean the church in November, so she shared it with any and all Young Women who took the time to listen.  I would find her in the primary room at the microphone and a couple of girls sitting on the floor, listening intently.

On Sunday morning, I asked the girls, "Guess what special day today is?!"
Maddie said, "Sunday!"
Emma said, "Fast Sunday!  I get to bear my testimony!"

I was really excited but so nervous for her, but I really thought she would change her mind.  Only two weeks before the primary sang a couple of Christmas songs, and she couldn't find the courage to go up front even with her friends, sister and teacher, I knew there was now way she could go up entirely on her own.

We got to church and she was contentedly coloring and eating pretzels, so I thought she had forgotten, and wasn't really listening.  After 2 testimonies, she set her things down and said, "Mom, is it my turn now?"

She started walking(we were only probably 12 rows from the stand), and she literally inched her way up.  She is so small, no one saw her and a couple of people went before she even reached the stand.  I had prepped her- how to walk, that the Bishop would giver her a stool, the microphone would be lowered for her, not to touch the microphone, etc.  But I failed to tell her what to do with herself when she got up there and someone else was speaking.  So she just stood there, confused, at the top of the stairs.  Jared went up and guided her to a seat off to the side.

Then she walked past the apparently scary Bishopric to the microphone and clearly and confidently shared her testimony, "I like to stand and bear my testimony.  I know the church is true.  I know my family loves me and I can be with them forever.  Jesus Christ, Amen."  I didn't see her walk back because I was crying to hard.  And Jared went after her, and he was very emotional, too.(I have only seen that man cry once since I've known him!)

A little later, Maddie went, too.  She got to the top of the stairs and saw the Bishop and said, "Mom, it's Lacie's dad!"  He is our next door neighbor, and Lacie is one of their very favorite baby-sitters and friends.  So Maddie just sat on his lap.  She got up to the podium and you couldn't even see her, just the very top of the flower in her hair.  She couldn't see us, either, and I think she forgot what she was doing.  I walked up and whispered, "Maddie, bear your testimony."  She gave me a surprised look and said, "OH!"  And then she whispered her testimony into the microphone with both hands cupped around it.  "I like to bear my testimony.  I know this church is true.  Amen!"

They are such brave little girls.  I'm so glad they have each other, but especially glad that they have such good examples in our ward and family.  They made that choice after watching others that they look up to show them the way.

I'll always be grateful for this day, the day Emma overcame her biggest fear to share her testimony.  A sister in the ward later commented to us that is Emma's "missionary heart" showing through.  A couple of the Young Women said they were so proud because they KNEW how long she had been working toward that goal.  It reminded me that a goal is never too big if it is for the right reasons, you get the right guidance, and you put in the work to reach it.
