We went for our first camping trip this weekend. It was a wonderful trip! The kids did really well, went for two long hikes, had a few very large fires, and of course roasted marshmellows! I have been camping in this area since I was a little girl and it is always such fun taking the kids to places that I myself have fun childhood memories in. We hiked to the bat caves (which I remember being such a long hike and so scary!). Nate was very nervous about going in, but was really very brave. Katie, our little adventurer, loves anything new and even better if it is scary!
Of course, we sat by the river while the kids threw everlasting rocks. They pretended to fish (I forgot the fishing pole), showed them where Papa and I used to fish together when I was Katie's age.
We brought the kids' bikes not knowing exactly where we'd be camping. We got to camp in "our spot" and so there were not paved roads. The kids still wanted to try on the gravel and we made it a small distance before they tired out.
Nate loved being able to go potty in the great outdoors... so much so, that when we walked down to the bathroom, he would refuse to go, wait until we got back to camp, and then say he had to go. At one point, Katie was in the potty, and Nate walked down the path, pulled his pants down and went potty. When I asked him why he did that on the path, he said " I didn't pee pee on the trail, Mommy. I did it on the leaves!"
Katie is our ever swimmer and she was almost instantly in the water. We had a lovely little beach in our site and felt quite safe letting her play to her hearts content. Of course, the water was ice cold and the breeze made her cold very quickly. Needless to say there were numerous changes back into her clothing!
All in all, this was our best camp trip to date! The kids slept well, had fun with the fire, hiking, and just spending quality time together. We are so excited about our next trip!
