An Epistle

Four years ago, after BYU basketball, led by Jimmer Fredette, upset San Diego State on their home floor, I remember reading something a guy had written about the game to his sister who was serving a mission. I thought my brother, Cam, would appreciate something similar, so I sent him this today. Maybe some of you will enjoy relieving last night too!

I, thine eldest sister, do commence mine epistle to you, mine youngest brother, who art faithfully serving our Lord in the faraway Chuuk Islands, concerning that great battle between our beloved Cougars and those mighty Zags.

For verily, the Zags were mighty not only on the west coast, yea, but also in the whole land, having earned a ranking of 3.

And our Cougars, despite many close losses and much adversity, had no ranking. Yea, and there was very little belief in all the land that our band of brethren could obtain a victory against the Zags in their own land.

For behold, the Zags had not lost a battle in their own land, even The Kennel, since the year of our Lord 2012, for the Zags had among them much talent, insomuch that they had won 41 battles straight, and were undefeated in conference play.

And it came to pass, that the Cougars did march forth into the Kennel, to give the Zags battle on their floor on that same night which honored those most Senior among the Zags, even that crafty Captain Pangos and his brethren Wesley and Bell Jr.

And in the Kennel was much hostility and mockery towards the Cougars. Yet our brethren were not shaken in their mission, for that great General Rose did lead them, and in him they did have much faith.

And it came to pass, that the great battle did commence, and that great Captain Chase Fischer, he who is from the land of our fathers, even West Virginia, did sink a three to start the battle, which thing is marvelous to behold.

And that three did embolden his fellow Captains, yea even the most beloved Captain of the Cougars, even Tyler Haws, and his brother, that most steady Captain, even Kyle Collinsworth, that they did score points to gain an early advantage over their enemy.

But behold, there was one among the Zags who was one of the most youthful among them, and his name was Sabonis, and he did score many buckets against our Cougars.

And it came to pass that our Cougars were not rattled, but did cause it to rain from behind the arc, and in this manner did they maintain their lead.

And that Kafusi, who is the brother of that fearsome Bronson, did plague that giant Karnowski with his defense and blocks that the giant did contribute little.

But our enemy did not relent, and its Captain Pangos did with great steadiness lead his team against the Cougars, and did sink a jumper at the buzzer of the half to even the score.

And at the mid-point of the battle, our beloved Captain Haws, who did just two nights before surpass our great leader Jimmer in points, did have but three. Yet his brethren did strengthen him with their great courage, insomuch that it mattered not.

And behold, in most of the land there was as yet but slight hope that the Cougars could slay the mighty Zags.

And the second half of the battle did commence, and our Cougars did fortify their confidence in their General to lead them, and did press forward in earnest, and were united in their goal.

And it came to pass that our brethren did again obtain a lead against their canine enemy. But nevertheless, they did not cease to fight on the glass and to guard with much energy.

And there was one among the Cougars, who did join their band from junior college two seasons ago, and his name is Skyler Halford. And many did doubt the play of that Halford, but behold, he did prove them wrong in conference play, yea and even against the Zags, for he did hurt them in diverse ways, even beyond the arc, in the midrange, at the rim, and from the stripe.

And the Angels were with Kafusi, that he did make a long hook shot that did shock and amaze.

And that courageous Captain Kyle Collinsworth did continue to lead them, yea, and his play could not be matched.

And behold, with less than eight minutes remaining in the battle, our Cougars did have a ten-point lead against their enemy.

Yet, verily I say unto you, the Zags did not cease their efforts, and a trey from that senior Bell Jr. did cut the lead to five but with two minutes to go. And that other senior Wesley wast fouled, and did make both shots, to make the lead but three.

But behold, that most brave Captain, even Collinsworth, who did suffer a grave injury at the hands of the Zags less than one year ago, nevertheless he hath no fear, and would not cause that his brethren should surrender to their enemy. Therefore, he did drive among those Zags that he might make a layup. But behold, he did miss.

Yet it mattereth not! For he did rise up among all those Zags as with the strength of ten men, and did put back his miss, that the Cougars did take a five point lead with fourteen seconds remaining. And the hearts of Cougar nation were gladdened.

But those mighty Zags did surge, and did pull within three. And there was much anxiousness in the land of the Cougars.

And it came to pass that with six seconds left in that great battle, the Zags did foul our beloved Captain Haws, and did send him to the line for two attempts. And all of Cougar nation did rejoice! because that Haws was one of the greatest from the stripe in the land. And he did need to make but one to end the bitter battle.

But behold, it came to pass that he did miss both, causing much anguish, for the battle was not yet ended.

But the Cougars did play smartly, and did send a Zag to the line with two seconds left. And that Zag did make both, so that the lead was but one.

And it came to pass that on the inbounds, the Zags did foul Ryan Andrus, who is but a freshman, and who had missed both attempts earlier in the battle. And the hearts of Cougar Nation did sink.

But verily I say unto you, that Andrus doth have ice in his veins, for he did make both.

But behold, the victory was not yet won, for the Zags had 1.6 seconds in which to tie our Cougars and prolong the fight.

And on the inbounds, the Zags did get the ball to Kyle Wiltjer, he who did transfer from the mightiest army in the land, even Kentucky. And Wiltjer did heave the ball from half court, and not one soul dared to breathe.

And the ball did hit the back of the rim, but I say unto you, it did not go in.

And that band of our brethren did rejoice, and great was the celebration thereof!

Yea, and there was much screaming for joy in the land of the Cougars, for there had not been a day so blessed among our people since the days of that great Jimmer.

And the Cougars did defeat the mighty Zags in their own land, which thing most did not suppose possible.

But our little band of Cougars were strong in their belief that they could win, and did fight together as one, and did earn the victory, never once allowing their enemy to obtain an advantage over them, which thing had not been done in the Kennel since 2007.

And it is with great joy that I bring you these tidings, and assure you that all is well in Cougar nation!

And verily, I say unto you, be not anxious that thou hast missed this great battle, for behold, there will be many more battles with the mighty Zags in which the Cougars may be victorious.

And I close mine epistle unto you, my beloved brother, and bid thee to do good work among the people of Chuuk, and to know that we lovest and pray for thee.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY, AJAX DUDE!

One year ago today, Jonathan and I were woken with an early morning phone call from the hospital calling us to come in right away so I could be induced. We quickly got dressed, threw our things in the car, and headed out on a very foggy morning to the hospital. Within an hour, by 7:15 AM, I was in a hospital bed, hooked up to an IV, waiting for something to happen. Jonathan and I watched A Muppet Christmas Carol while the contractions came closer and closer together. The whole thing seemed to go by very quickly, and by 12:15 PM, exactly five hours later, Ajax was here! All 7 lbs, 12 ounces, 19 inches of him. He came out screaming, but he was healthy and beautiful. Jonathan and I had never been more proud of anything, or anyone. He is our little baby, and words are not enough to describe how much we love him!

Jonathan and I talked a lot about what it would be like to have Ajax here with us, and about all the things we would do together, and what Ajax would be like. I think the thing that has surprised us the most is just how happy, easy-going, and good he is and always has been. I think this last year, with graduating from law school, and taking the Bar, and Jonathan working so much, would have been so much harder if Ajax wasn't such a good baby. I will always be grateful for that. I know we are lucky, and I'm sure our next child will be much different! But I really think Ajax will keep his happy disposition the rest of his life, and I am positive it will rub off on his siblings. It already rubs off on everyone he meets.

Birthdays are a big deal to me, and that's all thanks to my parents and the wonderful birthday memories they created for me. I will do my best to make sure each birthday is as special for him as it was for me! The day Ajax was born was one of the happiest days of my life, and I love that I get a day just to celebrate and remember that every year. I will certainly make the most of it!

The last month has been a whirlwind of fun!

Basketball season is in full swing, and we've been trying to get to as many games as we can. With Jonathan's work schedule at the moment, he can't get to as many, but I like to take Ajax on dates to the games. In fact, we're going on a date to a BYU game today for his birthday! I was at a BYU game less than 24 hours before he was born. I figured it was only right to start that tradition.

Jax loves looking around at all the people and hearing the sounds and seeing all the things that go on. He's usually too distracted to even take a photo with me.

One of my favorite things that Ajax does now is dances! He loves music, whether it's on the radio, on the tv, or someone singing. He will start shaking his little bum and swaying side to side. Case in point:

I love his face in this video! You can tell he loves it.

Thanksgiving crept up on us early this year. Jonathan had to work until late Wednesday night, so we left for Boise early Thanksgiving morning. Luckily we got to stay a couple extra days past the weekend. Ajax loves spending time at Grandma & Grandpa Schroath's house, especially when they read to and play with him!

Grandpa is a good sport. :)

And Grandma has lots of great books to choose from!

I put him in this outfit while we were in Boise, and it might be my favorite outfit of the last year.

I don't know if all babies learn to do this, or if it's just a boy thing, or just an Ajax thing, but he is really good at it. And I can't do it at all.

When it came to Thanksgiving dinner, Ajax loved it all! That shouldn't be a big surprise. He loves everything. He got to sit in with the adults, and he loved all the attention and good food he got to eat! Especially the sweet potatoes. Those are his favorite.

Our time in Boise is always too short, but we're looking forward to going back for New Years!

If you know Ajax, you know he will just go and go and go. He just doesn't stop. And he doesn't even usually get cranky when he's tired. But when you finally lay him down for a minute, he crashes.

Lately, he's been falling asleep at church (thank goodness), but usually only for about 10-15 minutes. But he always wakes up happy with a look that says "What have I missed?"

Jonathan and I have always loved Christmas and have always made it a big deal. It's been awesome to have Ajax share in our little family traditions! Like picking out the best Christmas tree. Can you tell we were enjoying ourselves?

Ajax helped us decorate the tree, too. We were worried that he would be all over the tree, pulling stuff off and being a menace. But he hasn't been that way at all. He will look at it, point at the lights, and touch his two favorite ornaments, but that's all.

Admiring their work!

As I mentioned, Jonathan's work schedule is different now, and Ajax and I have had long afternoons and evenings to hang out together. We don't mind, but we do miss Jonathan/Daddy! Sometimes we send him photos, just for fun.

And sometimes we go on adventures! Last week, we drove to Salt Lake with Jessica and met Nicole and Rhen and their kids at Temple Square to look at the lights! The weather was perfect, and the lights were beautiful. Ajax had a great time!

We can't wait to go back with Jonathan this weekend. :)

I already mentioned that Ajax loves to dance. He also loves to "sing"! Every time I get into the car with him and turn the music on, this is what I hear:

But his talents don't end there, folks! He's also great at making spit bubbles.

Ajax loves when we get out of the house for a while and go to the store. He settles right in, gets comfortable, and people watches. I couldn't resist taking this photo of him lounging about, foot resting on the cart. Little cheeser.

He will still eat anything we feed him, which probably shouldn't still surprise me, but it does! I wonder if we'll ever find a food he doesn't like. Recently, he's been loving these pouch things. I think it's because he can feed it to him himself.

Although today is his actual birthday, we celebrated a little early on Saturday with family and friends. The highlight of it all was, of course, his first cake! He was very cautious at first, just poking at it and licking it off his fingers. But once he realized we weren't going to stop him, he went for it. I love this classic first birthday cake photo! And guess what? He didn't even get it in his hair. I was prepared for a much bigger mess, but he was pretty systematic about the whole thing and didn't let much of it go to waste.

He's still not quite walking on his own yet, but he gets around just fine, and I'm sure he'll be walking (and running) soon. I can't even tell you how much fun it is to have Ajax around. He lights up our world, and we are so happy he is part of our family.
It's been a crazy year, and as expected, it went by too fast. I can't believe how much he has grown and how much he has learned! It seems just yesterday, and not a year ago, that I held him for the first time.  I know we have great times ahead, but I will always treasure the memories of his first year.

Thank you for a wonderful, special year, baby Ajax!

We love you more than anything!

Tyler Family Photos

A few weeks ago, we had our family photos taken! Well, sort of. We had plans to take some nice family photos, but the weather wouldn't cooperate, and it was the only Saturday we could make it work, so we mostly ended up with a lot of photos of Ajax. By the time we started taking our family group photos, it was pouring rain, and then snow. There are only a few photos of our family, and you can tell it's wet and cold (just look at my hair...). We will have to get some more taken next year when the weather is nice! But for now, here are the photos we had taken by Lisa Harbertson Photography. I still can't get over all the adorable ones of Ajax! You should have seen me when we first got them back. It was a lot of me putting my hand over my heart and saying "Oh my gosh!!!! Soooooo cuuuuuuute!!!" I'm a proud Mom, if you couldn't tell.

Enjoy the photos!

November 18

Happy November!

That went by fast. Do I always say that? It always feels that way.

Ajax is now 11 months old! That means that next month will be his birthday! I am planning an adorable 1st birthday party for him, and I cannot wait to show you all how it turns out. But for now, let's recap the last month.

If you follow me on twitter or instagram, you've probably seen most of these photos. That's the nice thing about having an iphone now. I can take nice photos and upload them instantly! But really, these blog posts are mostly for me anyway. :)

After Ajax (mostly) got over his viral infection, we were able to get out of the house and do some festive fall things, like go to the pumpkin patch.

We took Ajax on his first hayride. Sometimes, when we try new things, he doesn't react much. He observes.

And then when he sees something he likes, he dives in. Take this goat, for instance. He was not afraid at all.

He found all of the animals fascinating. He's never been afraid of animals. Jonathan is trying to convince me that this means we need a dog. Nope, sorry. Nope. We don't need a pig for a pet either. Sorry, Babe.

Jonathan thought it would be fun to take Ajax down this kid slide. Jax didn't cry, so I think that means he didn't hate it. It was a lame slide, though.

Naturally we had to set Ajax down for a classic fall photo with the hay and the pumpkins. I was able to snap this one in between him trying to eat the hay.

After we had done most of the activities, we took a hayride out to the actual pumpkin patch. Jax wanted to stay there all night waiting for the Great Pumpkin.

Ajax got into the Halloween spirit with this shirt his Grandma Schroath sent him. He makes a cute pumpkin.

On Halloween night, Jonathan had to work, so I took Ajax trick or treating for a short while with his cousins, the DeLucenas. Jonathan wanted him to be Hobbes from Calvin & Hobbes... but he was basically just a tiger. A cute tiger.

His uncle Guta the Storm Trooper loves Ajax and wanted to push him around all night. Jax couldn't stop turning around and looking at him.

After less than an hour of trick or treating, Ajax had quite the haul. So many people handed out full or king size candy bars, and he had plenty of other candy, most of which he couldn't eat. Guess where his candy went? Yep, Dad tax.

The first of November didn't start off great. Ajax started getting sick again. I'm not convinced he ever fully recovered from being sick in October. He had a bad cough and wheezing, so the doctor put him on a breathing treatment. We had to do it three times a day for 10-15 minutes for two weeks. Doesn't seem too bad, right? Well, Ajax isn't one to sit still and cuddle. He likes to be moving around and exploring. We only made it through these treatments because of Elmo and Charlie & Lola. And even then, it was rough.

The worst part for me was that being sick has completely ruined his sleep schedule. He was sleeping through the night just fine before he got sick. Now he still wakes up once or twice every night. We're working on getting back to normal. Funny story, though. When he does wake up, or won't go to sleep, he stands up in his crib. I usually go in there and lay him back down and tuck him in again. Sometimes, this happens a lot before he finally falls asleep. Well the other night I went in to lay him down, and as soon as he saw me, he dove back onto the mattress and laid down. He knows I'm just going to lay him back down, so now he does it himself! Smart, cheeky boy. The first few times he did it I had to stop myself from bursting out laughing! It's the little things like that make me stop and think about how great it is to be Ajax's mom.

But don't get me wrong, I would really love for him to sleep through the night again! Thankfully, he is finally doing better and back to his normal self. Hopefully he'll be sleeping find again soon!

While he was sick, we had to keep him inside for the first week or so. Ajax and I had a lot of down time to hang out and "talk."

He's still great at mimicking. I taught him this in a matter of minutes one morning! It's hard to take videos of him because he gets so distracted, but you can see the trick in the first couple of seconds.

With Jonathan's new schedule, he is home in the mornings. I love how excited Ajax gets when he sees his Daddy when he wakes up! Usually he wouldn't see him until the end of the day.

On election day, we made the short trip to our local elementary school to vote! I took this photo while we were waiting in line. I'd say about 85% of the photos I take of Jonathan turn out like this. Can't wait for Ajax to pick up on that...

Every once in a while, I get a great photo like this one. I love my handsome boys.

With football season still in full swing, and basketball season starting, that meant Grandpa Schroath was due for another visit. The weekend he came, it snowed a ton! Definitely the most snow Ajax has seen in his life. Grandpa helped him get acquainted with the snow.

Grandpa brought Ajax some Christmas books that Grandma found him at a garage sale. One of them was Frosty the Snowman. We got a kick of listening to his Uncle Garrett read him the story... but as he spontaneously translated it into Dutch! The pronunciation of
"snowman" in Dutch made us laugh. Ajax didn't care too much either way. He just likes stories.

That night, we headed out into the snowstorm and went to support our BYU Cougars in their home opener game. Ajax and I won four tickets to the game a couple of months ago--we've (I've) been looking forward to it for a while! I plan on raising Ajax to be a BYU basketball fan player, so it was exciting for me to take him to his first game! (Side note: the night before Ajax was born, I was at a BYU basketball game. But I don't think that really counts for him.)

He didn't know what he should think at first...

But he's into it now! Look at that concentration. Probably analyzing and picking up some pointers for later. I've already told him several times that when he's a bit bigger, we will be shooting free throws every day.

It was nice to have my Dad there for the game and to get to hang out with Garrett (and Cam, but he's not in the photo). And it was nice to have a few extra hands to help with Ajax (during timeouts, of course--otherwise he was glued to the court... not really. but one day).

One of my favorite things about having a kid is getting to dress him how I want. I couldn't resist buying this bowtie. Because bowties are cool.

I've probably been saying this for months, but Ajax loves to eat whatever we are eating. He won't eat his baby food anymore. I still haven't found a food he doesn't like, and he has tried a lot of different foods. One day, I walked in the kitchen to find Jonathan at the table eating a pie right out of the pie tin, sharing every other bite with Ajax. Oh boys.

Ajax's hair was getting too long. Part of me didn't want to cut his hair, because he's still a baby! The other part of me didn't want him to look like a girl. You can guess which part won. But someday (or never) I'll have to figure out how to deal with him growing up.

He was mostly good for the hair cut, as long as he got to hold onto the squirt bottle. I was worried that he would lose his curls, but his hair is still curly as ever when wet. I've been having too much fun styling it different ways!

I love his toothy smile. Especially his vampire teeth. He had both of those teeth in by the end of October. He's just now getting his two front teeth. Also, I think it's funny (mostly cute) how much more noticeable it is after his hair cut that his ears stick out!

On days when Jonathan is at work and we need to get out of the house, our first likely stop is the DeLucenas. Angela and Guta and their four (almost five) kids love playing with Ajax, and we love playing with them. We've had some unusually warm days this November, so we've had some nice late afternoons outside on the swings.

Last week, Ajax had his first sort of play date with my friend's little boy! He is five months younger than Ajax, but they still had some fun together. Jax definitely needs to make some more friends and have some more play dates in the future. He loves being around other kids.
(I stole your photo, Karie! Hope that's okay!)

A few months ago, we booked a mini vacation to Park City for the three of us. With Jonathan's shift change, he ended up having to work one of the nights, so my mother-in-law Becky came up with Ajax and I for the night. We went shopping, out to dinner, and played lots. Saturday morning Becky went home and Jonathan drove up and spent the rest of the day and night with us. We took our first family photos in the afternoon, then grabbed dinner and a movie before we took Ajax back to the resort to swim. He only lasted about five minutes, holding on to me tightly. To be fair, the water was cold and not very pleasant, and there were loud kids all around us. We'll try again next week when we're in Boise for Thanksgiving!

By the end of our short trip, we had worn out the poor dude. He had fun exploring a new place, though, and we all enjoyed the short break from home. Really it just made me more excited for our Thanksgiving trip! We haven't seen very much of Jonathan lately, so we will make the most of our time together.

I can't wait to show you the photos we had taken of Ajax this weekend! You'll have to wait for his birthday post. But here's a bit of a preview:

Ajax is such a sweet, adventurous, silly, charming, adorable boy. He is always smiling, always making friends with strangers. People always come up to me and tell me how sweet and special he is. I always love the reminder. He's is stubborn, and gets into everything, and wakes me up at night, and still thinks it's funny when I shake my head and tell him "No!". But I love him for it.

Happy 11 months, baby Ajax! Love you, sweetheart!
