Back in the Saddle Again

So we took dad and mom up American Fork Canyon today for a ride on our Polaris Ranger and decided to let dad have a go at it. First he just tried the steering wheel sitting next to me in the driver's seat. He did so well, we moved him over to the driver's seat, and he did fabulous!

Working Away

Dad has been continuing to work hard at his therapy. Mom started therapy for her shoulders and neck and it is helping her too. We have added a calendar at the bottom of the page of our family times to spend with dad and mom. They would love to see any of you when you have the time to stop by, if it happens to be fast Sunday just call ahead ( even the day of would be fine), bring something potluck and come join us.

Glimmers of Hope

Dad went in the end of December to get some more botox treatments. With the first set, he didn't see much change at all, but this time, they increased the dosages and it made a difference, so much so, with the help of his grandkids coming and working his arm, they decided to start back up his Occupational Therapy for a while. We really thought that he had gotten back as much as he was going to get after his stroke, but he still continues to improve and we are all so grateful.

Nearly a year and still progressing

The progress continues, it's slow but it continues. Dad has been walking without his cane at home, and mainly uses it when he leaves the house, (he had a bad fall at the park last week trying to walk without it). They gave him botox treatments in his arm and hand but the dosage must've been too low, there has been no change, he holds his hand in a tight fist up against his stomach. They will try again in a couple of months (they have to wait 3 months in between treatments) He continues to be so positive and happy. Him and mom are so sweet together, even though this has been so difficult, I think it has brought them even closer.

Slow & Steady

Dad's physical and occupational therapy have ended, they said he was able to keep it longer than most. He still has speech therapy twice a week and his therapist says he is continuing to make great progress. We notice improvement too. There are fewer words that he gets hung up on. So it is up to dad and the rest of us from here on out with physical and occupational therapy. He got a special cane from a friend of ours that was designed specifically for stroke victims, it has two small half moon shaped pieces of rubber covered metal on the bottom of it, and we can't believe the improvement in his walking. He has put away his hemi-walker now and has a more natural looking stride. Last week, our brother, Ryan, had sat dad's new cane over on the other side of the family room from where dad was seated. Dad got up and walked over to where it was, picked it up, and walked back over to where he had beeen sitting. He is also able to get up off the couch now without having to hold onto something to get his momentum to stand up. He just pushes off with his left hand on the couch or wherever he is sitting. These probably sound like baby steps, but they seem huge to us, each new piece of mobility he regains brings him that much closer to full recovery, which we have still not given up hope on. They are going to be giving him some botox injections in his arm that they hope will loosen up his hand, wrist, and arm, so that he might be able to get some mobility back in them. Everything has tightened up in his hand to where movement has completely ceased. Please continue to remember him in your fasting and prayers, we so appreciate it! We went out to Park Valley again this weekend and dad asked me to go through his therapies with him. He was moving right along on some of his leg exercises and I told him to stop and take a rest, and he said. "He (his therapist) gave me a goal and I want to go past it." He continues to be a great inspiration to us all.

Park Valley Branding

Our annual trip out to Park Valley is something that the whole family looks forward to all year and this year was no exception. It was especially meaningful for all of us to see dad being able to get around and enjoy being out there with us. He continues to improve, he continues to walk with his walker but has also ventured to walk without it every once in a while. Dad is becoming more independent everyday which makes things a lot easier for mom. Their lives are starting to get back to more of a normal routine, except for mom doing the driving, which once dad is able to drive again, mom will gladly relenquish in order to be a passenger. Dad's speech therapist is very pleased with dad's progress lately, he is starting to really take off with it, dad's sentences are becoming more complete all the time and making more sense. He says that when he reads, it is making more sense to him now. He still has some funny sentences come out every once in a while but we are usually able to decifer what he means. He has such a great mental attitude and I think he can see the light at the end of this very long tunnel he has been in.

Thank you! Thank you! and more miracles!

It was so wonderful to meet all of you last night and to have you take the time out of your busy schedules to come and spend last evening with our parents, they were both just so happy to see all of you and visit with you and catch up on your lives. Thanks for all the love and support that you have shown our parents through the years, and especially these past 5 months. Thanks to Jason and Ben for pulling it off last night!

Dad has been doing great! His therapy in American Fork has been going very well. About a month ago, dad put away his wheelchair and hasn't gotten it back out. They told us the end of December that he would probably need the wheelchair for a year or more. Just Monday when dad was at therapy, he asked them if he could try walking without his walker or anyone holding onto him, they said sure, and he did it! He went all the way around the therapy room, and then Wednesday, he walked again, 2 1/2 times around the room and then also on a treadmill that in his words "was zipping right along". About 3 weeks ago, I asked him about trying to walk without the brace on his foot and he was able to do that. Both in the hospital and when he was having therapy at home, they both said they didn't know if dad would ever be able to walk without the brace, and he is. He continues to progress with his speech, he does get hung up on some words when he is talking to others but he is getting some complete sentences. There are still things that he is having to relearn with thought processes, but through repetition, he is getting those skills back as well. His arm will be the last to come back, but he is making progress there too. I asked dad yesterday on the way down to therapy and he was telling me about his walking during therapy the day before, if he could see himself getting all better now and he said yes. His neurologist last week said that for a stroke patient to be where dad is in his recovery, it has on the average taken people a year to be where dad is at, and it has only been 5 months for dad.
