We are official CRUISERS!!

We recently went on what I hope was the first of many cruises!! It was THE best vacation of my entire life!!  I think there are many things that made me feel this way... 1- I didn't have to THINK at all for an entire week about what to eat, or more importantly, cleaning up after preparing food and eating.  I didn't have to meal plan, or grocery shop, or prepare food for 1-2 hours each day, or set my table, or ASK someone to set the table, or worry that some little person might not like or eat what I made, or clean up after eating, or put dishes in the dishwasher, or stare at dishes that I don't want to handwash, or put dishes away from my dishwasher, or sweep my kitchen floor, or ANYTHING kitchen related!!!!! Now, don't get me wrong here- I actually enjoy doing some of these things most of the time, BUT to have a break from all of the above for an entire week, really was the icing on my vacation cake!  There were so many dining options to choose from.  There was one restaurant onboard that was a buffet style, and open from 6AM-11PM.  Practically any type of food you could imagine, and lots of fruits, and veggies, and desserts always available too!  On one of the pool decks, there was a pizza and taco bar, and then there were two "reservation only" restaurants, and the formal dining room.  Of course if we had wanted we could have ordered room service for every meal, every day! For dinner we always chose the formal dining room.  We had a standing reservation there where we always had the same two waiters who really got to know us and our kids pretty well.  The menu options were amazing- 5 course meals every night! We did have 2 formal dress evenings, otherwise the dress was business casual.

Now if you've ever cruised with kids before then you are already familiar with the second thing that was great, 2- the kids LOVED going to the onboard kids club (which gave us a built-in babysitter at NO additional cost!!). We cruised on Holland America Line (HAL), which is known for catering to the, shall we say, more mature crowd.  But as first time cruisers, we would not have known this from our experience (we maybe would have wondered WHY in the world there were so many grey haired onboard though).  The kids club was amazing! And since there were so few kids onboard, the girls in charge there were able to give all of the kids great individualized attention.  Sienna and Dallen were both in the same age group, so they were able to hang out together.  They had a 3 day itinerary for the club sent to us as needed, and they even had activities scheduled on "port days", so if we had wanted we could have left the kids onboard while we ventured off the ship.  The kids got to do arts and crafts, play games, make their own ice cream sundae creations, go on treasure hunts, have a pj/movie night party, one night was "space night" and they got to go out on the deck and star gaze, and then have their faces painted like "aliens".  There were so many more, too.  They were so excited to go each night after dinner, which gave me and Jeff lots of time to do whatever WE wanted! We went to a few minutes ofsome of the evening shows, but found that we prefered to go to one of the quiet bars onboard and just hang out and talk.  The ship also had a movie theater, a book, movie, and game library, an internet cafe, an art gallery, a dance club, a casino, 2 swimming pools, 4 hot tubs, a sauna, and I'm sure lots of other places and things that I'm forgetting!

3-There was a group of 17 of us that all went together!!  I think that it was a blast to go with so many people that I love!!  We went on this cruise to celebrate my mom's upcoming 60th birthday.  So all of my siblings and their spouses came (Tori and her fiance), plus my mom's two sisters, and then my sister Casey and I each brought our 2 kids. The only itinerary we had was the ship's itinerary.  We all did our own thing, but would often times end up at the same places!  Sometimes we would plan to do something together, and other times we planned all on our own!  It may seem silly, but I loved walking into the breakfast bar in the morning not knowing who we would have our breakfast with! There was always someone already eating, and we would usually join them and have our breakfast together.  It was nice to always have someone to do something with.  If one person wasn't interested in what you were planning, it didn't matter, because most of the times there was someone else who was interested! Different company each day, and always happy to be doing whatever it was we were doing!

In addition to those great aspects of this vacation, of course, was the fact that we went on a cruise in the Eastern Caribbean!!  What a beautiful part of the world!  We left from Ft. Lauderdale, Florida on Saturday, January 7.  Sunday the 8th we were "at sea".  On Monday we ported at Grand Turk, Turks and Caicos.  I had heard poor things about Grand Turk.  Lots of online reviews were people ranting to HAL that they should remove this from all of their future itineraries- I DISAGREE.  I thought it was a beautiful island.  Mostly the reasonings for wanting it to be removed was due to the amount of poverty on the island.  People reported that they were "on a luxury cruise, and they didn't want to see anything but luxury!" Give me a break people!!  This island is partly surviving because of the cruise lines that port there!  They make a lot of their money from the tourists, and Carnival cruiseline itself has rebuilt some sections of the island.  We took a cab inland a bit to their old historic town.  Duke Street (Front Street) was the street we were on, and it was so beautiful and quaint.  There was a lot of construction and rebuilding taking place, which I hear was needed as a result of a hurricane from 2008.  Obviously it's taking them a long time to repair all that was lost.  We visited their National Museum (a tiny old home) which boasts having the oldest shipwreck ruins ever recorded.  They actually think (although they're the first to admit they have no solid proof) that the shipwreck may have been from Columbus' fleet.  They speculate it may be the ruins from the Pinta.  Regardless of what ship it is, it's pretty amazing to see everything there! The other cool thing we got to see on Grand Turk was the John Glen Memorial site.  After his first space flight and 3 orbit's around the earth, his little spacecraft that he was in landed in the ocean on the outskirts of the Turks and Caicos islands.  The small memorial they have set up is pretty nice.  It was very close to the beach where our ship was ported.

Our next port after leaving Grand Turk, was San Juan, Puerto Rico!!  It was absolutely amazing watching us pull into port there.  We observed from up in the Crow's Nest.  There was an onboard DJ telling us all about the history of San Juan as we pulled in.  There is a gorgeous fortress on the edge of the island, called "El Morro".  It was built in the 1500's, and it's 140 ft tall, 6 levels, and some of the walls are 15 ft. thick! The DJ was describing how hard it was for enemy ships to approach the island because of the fort.  It had cannon's that could shoot 3 miles out! There were supposedly over 100 shipwrecks underneath the water where we were pulling in!! Needless to say, we just HAD to go tour that fort!!  Pretty spectacular!  Old San Juan was so beautiful! There is a free trolley to take you all over town there if you ever go- no need to pay for a taxi!!  We also walked through the San Juan Cathedral.  It's the cathedral where Ponce de Leon is entombed.  I didn't realize that he was the first Governor of Puerto Rico.  I'm sure I did learn that in school, but all I remembered was that he had discovered the "Fountain of Youth"!! Oh, the things that stick-lol!

St. Thomas, US Virgin Islands was our next port.  Again, very beautiful!! By far the warmest waters, too!! It felt like stepping into a warm bath in the ocean there!  Sienna and Dallen really became quite the beach bums on this trip!  All they want to do now is go back to the beaches!!  We figured out at St. Thomas that we needed to depant Dallen in the ocean waters to clean all the sand out of his pants prior to returning to our stateroom onboard ship.  I didn't know it was possible to carry so much sand in one's pants!! He didn't mind though!!  We did bury both kids in sand up to their waists on one beach, and the built sand castles at every beach we stopped at! Jeff found a sand crab on our St. Thomas beach.  That silly little crab must have been very mad at us for invading his home! He hung out with us for the whole time we were there!

Let's see, now we're to Thursday- that was our next "at sea" day, which we needed! We were really tired from all the site seeing from the previous 3 days!!  It was a warm day onboard- which was great because the first day at sea it was only 72 degrees, which was too cool for the outdoor pool when you add in the sea breeze!  Thursday it was 80 degrees and not so breezy.  Gorgeous and relaxing!  Our last port was a private owned island in the Bahamas.  HAL named it Half Moon Cay, and it was by far the most beautiful beach!  The sand was white and so soft and fine that it was like walking through powdered sugar, but it wasn't sticky!  The waters were so clear and blue, and we couldn't have had a more perfect last day!!  There was a bar on the island called "I wish I could stay here forever"... We all just wished...

All too soon we pulled back into port at Ft. Lauderdale- it had been a whole week.  We were happy to get home that Saturday evening the 14th of January, just because it's nice to get back to our real home.  Now a month later we still can't stop talking about the cruise.  It is a vacation that we will remember forever!!  I can't wait to go on another cruise!!!  Who's ready to plan with me???

Cheyenne Mountain Zoo/ Field Day

Dallen, Aubrey, and Hayden riding in my single stroller!

At Sienna's school last year their field day was rained out two different times.  So this year they decided to move field day to the fall.  They had just a month and a half to prepare for it!  Sienna had tons of fun! Here are a few pictures of her...

Out of the mouths of babes...

Two days ago we were sitting having dinner.  Jeff decided for whatever reason that it was an appropriate time to gear the kids up for cleaning out their toys and things to thin out the items they may have that they aren't really in need of anymore.  Of course we know that there are children in need of toys and other things to play with because they may not have access or money for them.  We've tried in past years to teach our kids to be empathetic for children who are in need or who just have less then them, but we have failed miserably!  Last year we had our ONLY garage sale that I will ever have (I'm just so NOT a garage sale person!!)... we encouraged our kids to each pick 3 things that they would sell.  We just thought giving them the opportunity to earn some change for a toy or two would make it more enticing, but no.  Sienna still brings up her long lost toys that we made her sell (or give to goodwill at the end of the day).  She cries on those days as she fondly remembers her things are forever gone (feel the tenderness and sarcasm as I say that last line... ).  Each year when we ask them "Which items do you not use anymore?" Or "What things do you have that you would like to put away to make room for NEW things?" They respond with "All of our things are important to us, we need all of our things!"  Usually we slowly put some toys and books away, and then sneak them off to goodwill when they aren't looking.  Well this year I thought maybe we'd get a different response.  Sienna is growing and beginning to understand a lot more about the world in general.  Poverty included.  She has had a couple of her good friends who had birthday parties, but instead of asking for gifts, said that they wanted to have money donated for them to buy an animal for an impoverished family. (I hope my grammar is correct, feel free to correct me if neccesary.)  This really struck her, and now she says when she has another birthday party, she wants to do the same.  Also, we've shown her selected parts of some news of the natural disasters that have taken place this past year.  She's seen the damage from the earthquakes, tsunami's, hurricane's, and tornado's.  ANYHOW, now that you have the back story... we're at the dinner table, and Jeff says something like "Well kids, Christmas is approaching, and your bedrooms are small.  What do you think we need to start thinking about?"  Sienna's immediate response without even pausing was...

"I guess it's time to start looking for a new house!!"

I don't even know where to begin!

When it's been almost a year since blogging, it's hard to know where to start! Today, I am home with my cute sick almost 3 year old. I say almost 3 year old because he is so big that many people mistake him for an almost 4 year old. I don't think he's SO tall, or SO round, or anything like that. But overall, he is just big! I was at Kohl's shopping last week, and ran into an old high school friend who happens to have 6 kids. After telling her that he was 2, she quickly replied "He is THE BIGGEST 2 year old that I have EVER seen!" (For the record, last time we were at the doctor he was only about 75% for height and weight).

So today Dallen is at home with me, instead of at my friends house, where he usually is on Tuesday's and Wednesday's when I'm at work. Last night he woke up around midnight and he was CRYING! The only time he wakes up at night crying is when he is sick. Last Wednesday night, he decided to share Sienna's toothbrush with her, and two days later she was diagnosed with Strep. I sort of thought he had been lucky and had missed getting it... until last night. We had a doctor's appointment this morning, and I was right- Strep throat. Sad for him, but I was glad that my intuition was right after I called in to work for the day. From the way he's acting, I would have had no idea he was sick at all. This child of mine (unlike his big sis) is a trooper. The only way I ever know he is sick is if he wakes up crying in the night. He is such a happy boy!

Lately, Dallen and I have had a lot more "Mommy and me" time. Sienna started first grade about a month ago. It is seriously the most wonderful thing to have time to dedicate to Dallen! And it's also strange; not so much to be with him, but to have my time monopolized by a 2 year old instead of a 6 year old. Sienna likes to be involved in everything, she likes to be the center of attention in our home. So when she is home, I very rarely get to spend time do things with just Dallen. She is having quite the adjustment being gone all day from us. I think she really enjoys school. I know she applies herself, and is learning very quickly. But she absolutely can't stand that we get to spend the day together, and she is not doing what we're doing. Yesterday Sienna came home from school saying "This was the best day that I've EVER had!" About an hour or so later as we were all catching up with our doings from the day, she then said "This has been one of the worst days of my life!" She is so confused. I tried to talk with her about it, but she doesn't know what to do with her emotions. She knows that she had a great day at school, but then on the flip side she's feeling upset that we DID something without her. I'm trying to be mindful of this, and not discuss certain "really fun" things that Dallen and I do in front of her. I'm hoping she'll grow out of this jealousy soon.

So with our newfound time, I decided to start really focusing on learning letters and sounds with Dallen. I've not spent nearly the time with him up to this point in his life, as I had with Sienna at the same age learning letters. Of course he knows a lot, just from natural exposure through reading. I'm excited to see how quickly he'll learn and pick up on letters and sounds when I have time to focus on it with him! We've also had some park visits, a few walks, and I've been letting him watch a movie each day (too much tv time, I know). He LOVES that he gets to pick out whatever he wants! In a couple of days, we'll be heading down south to Colorado Springs for the day, to meet up with my sister, Casey and her son, Hayden. We are so looking forward to going to the Cheyenne Mountain Zoo with them!!

I don't know when I'll blog again, but hopefully I'll have more time for this too!! I'll end with a recent picture of my little loves. This is from when we visited the Butterfly Pavillion last month. Fun times!!

The End of 2010

The year ended fabulous for the Shaw family!! Jeff finished his first semester back to college. He had a great semester finishing with 2 A's, and 2 B's!! Yay! So then we were able to really relax for the first time in MONTHS! Jeff took a full week off from work, then I took a full week off also! We were both able to spend lots of quality time with the kiddo's!! I wanted to share just a few cute pictures from December... first one is Dallen and Sienna in their Christmas clothes. I really LOVE the expression on Dallen's face :)
Here is Sienna's first hand/head stand!! I'm not sure what inspired her to want to even TRY to do a handstand, but she was trying so hard, so I gave her a couple tips that I learned when I was young (so yes, she is in fact leaning a bit against the wall behind her). She was SO proud of herself!!
Every year my Mom and sisters and I all have a "bake day" where we make lots of yummy goodies for ourselves and Santa Claus! This year my kids and I had are own small version of this annual day because my Mom and sisters were in MEXICO for my cousin Kelly's wedding (Congrats Nate and Kelly!! Wish I could've been there too!!). Here are some funny pics from the day.
Dallen was (obviously) a mess, and then SNUCK one of the cookies before they were even frosted!! What a little stinker! An awfully cute stinker though...
Then on December 30th, we FINALLY got our first snowstorm!! We kept having snow in our forecast, but never got more than a dusting. So it was hard for me to believe that it was actually going to snow when it showed up in our forecast yet again! We didn't get much, but 3 inches of white fluffy snow and below freezing temperatures was enough to keep the snow around for a couple days. I have to say, I like how the snow looks, but I'm always glad when it melts away! I think that is why Denver winters and I get along so well. We are going to have a 50 degree day later this week! :) Here is a picture of the kids all bundled up to play in the backyard!
I hope whomever reads this had a prosperous 2010, and Happy New Year to you all also!!
Welcome 2011!!

Summer Trains

At the beginning of the summer Dallen started to express an interest in trains. Jeff is a lover of trains, as was his Grandpa Tibbs. So Jeff was keen to indulge in Dallen's newfound love. We have a "train museum" quite close to our home, and we purchased an annual pass! The Colorado Railroad Museum has many fun events that take place throughout the year such as "Day out with Thomas" (as in Thomas the Tank Engine). Very expensive to participate, even with our membership, so we have chosen to skip out on these "extra" events for now- maybe one day.

The museum is only about 10 minutes from our home, so it's great to just jaunt on over to visit for a little while when we have spare time. Dallen and Sienna both really enjoy climbing all over the trains, and even pretending that they live on them! I love their imaginations- they could pretend on the trains for hours- in fact, they usually aren't ready to leave the museum when Jeff and I are ready.

Throughout the summer we have visited several different trains, and I thought it'd be fun to share some of the pictures that we have taken! The first several are from our family's first visit together to the railroad museum...

Can you tell that Jeff is just as excited as Dallen at this point?? They very much share this interest!!
Here the kids are on one of the many cabooses that are spread throughout the park.

I can't hold all the details of these trains in my head- too much train info for me and my brain shuts down, but I can tell you that this is a steam engine, and it is VERY OLD!!
Isn't it insanly crazy how HUGE this engine is?? My hubby not a small man, and he looks tiny next to this monster of a train!!
This looks like just your standard caboose picture, but notice me and Dallen up in the top window?? It was pretty fun to climb up there!!! :)
This is Dallen hanging out on one of the big engines. He was pretty happy, but I couldn't catch him smiling and looking out at the same time... he wanted to be INSIDE the train, not outside.
Now this next picture down below was when we went to Jeff's cousin Melody's wedding in Salt Lake City, UT. The wedding was at "This is the Place" monument, and they have a train there that rides over the property and gives a tour. Dallen was SO very excited!! Actually all of the little cousins were excited. We met all of Jeff's family there, so all of our kids cousins on his side of the fam were at the wedding too! It was great to be there for Melody's wedding, and really great to have all of us together- we just don't see each other enough.
Here we are on the train- from left to right- Taven, Ellie, Mikayla, Sienna, Ginny, Meah(with her head turned), me, Dallen, and Emily. I have long been told of an amazing park down south of Denver called Belleview Park. We had never been until this summer, and I can't wait to go again!! It was about a 40 minute drive, so I can't imagine that we'll go often, but it's definitely worth visiting for a day trip once each summer. There is not only a great playground, but also a covered picnic area with grills, bathrooms, a petting zoo, a small creek to play in, and a train to ride!! Next year we'll take a picnic lunch, towels, and plan on spending the whole day there!

In September I had the great pleasure of watching my good friend Melissa's kids for a few days before she went on maternity leave with her 3rd baby. One of the days that they spent with us, we decided to take them to the Colorado Railroad Museum with us- here is one of the cute pictures from that day. They all had a blast together!

At the end of the summer, I am happy to report that Dallen's love for trains has grown immensely! In the last month or so he's decided that he wanted to "potty train" and as he's progressed we've been giving him little train presents as rewards for different stages. He's been in underwear now for the last 3 weeks, even when he sleeps!! He's doing great! But he loves his "Thomas" and "Salty" train engines so much that he sometimes takes them to bed with him for naps... it's cute... I'm sure that he will share this love with his Daddy, and his Great Grandpa for the eternities!! We just booked our tickets to go on the Georgetown Loop train for the "Santa Express" specialty train!! Can't wait for December 4th!!

My daughter is SO funny!

See what I mean? She's even cracking up at herself!!
