This month has gone by so fast. Hopefully I will get caught up on our blog soon. I have so much to post about. Here is the short and long version of Kiley's birth.
The Short Version
I was in labor all day Friday. I was able to clean the house, so I wasn’t sure if I was really in labor. My contractions were about every 10 minutes apart and not very painful. When Jonathan got home from studying around 9:30PM, they started to be about 5 minutes apart and were beginning to be more painful. I called my mom to come spend the night with Raylin and I took a shower. We got to the hospital at 11. I had to take antibiotics since I had tested positive for group B strep, which meant I had to wait at least four hours to have a baby. As soon as the epidural kicked in my water broke. I stared at the clock the whole time. She was ready to come at least 2 hours before I made my one push and the doctor pulled her out. Kiley Adelaide Crosby was born at 4:20AM on Saturday May 8, 2010 weighing 7 pounds 9ounces and 20.5 inches long with lots of dark hair.
The Long Version
It started on Wednesday when I went to my doctor appointment. Jonathan had three finals he was studying for and we weren’t sure when the best time to have a baby was. I was hoping to be induced Thursday or Friday. I was also hoping to be induced in the morning so that I would only have to be in the hospital one night. We found out there were no openings until Monday at 3PM. I was so sad for the next two days.
Thursday night I told myself that I was going to go into labor on my own, something I was terrified of doing since I didn’t know what to expect. I was worried about waiting too long and being in unnecessary pain, but I was tired of being pregnant and I didn’t want to wait any longer. Somehow, my body got the message because when I woke up Friday my contractions started. I wasn’t sure if that is what was really happening, so I decided to go about my regular day. I cleaned the house, which is not an easy task when being pregnant.
Around 1PM when I put Raylin down for her nap, I decided to start timing my contractions. They were about 10 minutes apart. I still wasn’t sure if I was in real labor yet. Everything I had read said that true labor starts in the back and goes forward. I wasn’t feeling pain in my back, and I was still able to do things around the house.
Jonathan came home for dinner and left to go study. He brought me some movies to make the time pass. I still wasn’t in a lot of pain, so I didn’t make any plans to go to the hospital. Of course, it was starting to get late and Raylin was already in bed, so if I was really in labor I needed a plan. I called my mom to ask her how her labors went to determine if I was or not. As soon as Jonathan got home at 9:30PM, my contractions started to be about 5 minutes apart and were getting stronger. I called my mom again and she was on her way to stay with Raylin for the night. We still weren’t hurrying at this point. We took showers and finished packing and finally made it to the hospital at 11PM. So much for my plan of only staying one night.
My fear of being sent home of a false alarm was unnecessary. They didn’t even question my ability to know if I was really in labor. All I had to do was tell them that I was. Apparently, I should have gone in sooner since I had tested positive for group B strep. That would have been nice to know. I had to wait at least 4 hours so that I could receive enough of the antibiotics. I was so grateful to get an epidural. I thought I would be able to sleep those four hours. As soon as I was almost asleep, my water broke. Jonathan didn’t believe me until he saw how much fluid there was. I stared at the clock the rest of the time. I couldn’t sleep between being all wet and my blood pressure monitor going off ever 15 minutes. I am pretty sure she was ready to be born at least two hours before they called the doctor to come. I am just so glad that I wasn’t in any pain. I don’t know how people do it without one.
Dr. McNeal, my doctor, was out of town or something, so they called in Dr. Tutt. He was there sometime after 4AM took one look at me and realized the only reason Kiley wasn’t there yet was the opening was too small. He snipped me, they told me to push, and she was in my arms seconds later. Of course, the doctor had to be funny, he stopped halfway between my pushing and told us that Kiley’s hand was up by her face and she was waving hello to everyone. At the time, I didn’t think it was amusing, I just wanted to see her and not have to push more than once. Kiley Adelaide Crosby made her appearance Saturday May 8, 2010 at 4:20AM, weighing 7 pounds 9 ounces and 20.5 inches long. My labor and deliveries are the easiest part of having a baby for me. I am a horrible pregnant person and I definitely don’t like nursing. At least it is worth it in the end. Now I have two beautiful little girls.
Kiley pretty much slept all of Saturday, which meant she was awake all night. It reminded me of Raylin’s first night. I didn’t know I would spend Mother’s Day in the hospital. Jonathan was so proud of himself that I got breakfast in bed. Ha ha. I finally got a nap in. I hadn’t slept much since Thursday night. Apparently, our blood mixed when she was born and so she had some type of Jaundice. Since she wasn’t eating because she was sleeping so much they told me I should supplement. I wasn’t about to do that. I knew that once she started eating she would be fine. They almost didn’t let us go home on Sunday. They tested her Sunday evening around 5PM and we they told us we could leave at 7PM. It was so good to be able to go home. I am not a fan of the hospital.
