Westward Ho! (May-June 2014)

It's been long overdue to have a Capel sibling family reunion. It had been almost 6 years since our last adventure out west. Joe's brother, Ben got married which helped push along our plans to make the long journey out there. We strongly considered driving, but then even more strongly considered our sanity so we decided to fly. We drove to Texas where Joe's sister Angie lives then flew from Dallas to Las Vegas. The wedding was in Southern Utah so Vegas worked out great. We were able to reconnect with several friends on this trip as well. On our way to Texas we stopped in Shreveport, LA to see our old neighbors from Whiteman, Adam and Melissa. Then we stayed overnight in Ft. Worth with some old friends we knew in Turkey, Karen and Jose. The military definitely has its perks, we love knowing people all over the world! It seemed like we could have just turned around and been satisfied with our vacation, but the journey continued the next day when we met Joe's sister at the airport and flew out west.

For the reunion we reserved 2 family condos that everyone shared. The resort was very family oriented with a park outside our units and several swimming pools. Our first day there we went to Zion's National Park where we did things like jump off cliffs and slide down slippery rocks under a waterfall. The kids really enjoyed their cousin time as well as almost giving their mom a heart attack while running ahead near 100 ft drop-offs! Joe was able to celebrate his first birthday with his family in a very very long time! We gave him the royal treatment with his favorite meal (Chinese Food), favorite cake (Carrot Cake) and of course silly string after he blew out his candles!

Ben and Chrissy had a beautiful temple wedding. We were so honored and privileged to attend the endowment and sealing. Each time we enter the temple we can't help but remember the day we were sealed for eternity and how special that day was for us. It was so neat to see so many of Joe's family members in the same sealing room together. It was also fun to spend time on the temple grounds taking pictures with the family. This is an occasion that doesn't come often and we took full advantage of that great opportunity to record those memories.

The remainder of our trip consisted of a short getaway with Dan and his family to rural Boulder, UT, home of Hell's Backbone! No pictures were taken, but just imagine driving through a huge windy canyon with a narrow road and absolutely no barriers, only to reach the very top of a narrow what would seem to be a bridge (but it's not, it's very much a road with no barriers and a million foot drop on both sides...yikes!) It was very nerve-racking to stand near that ledge for any amount of time! We are very happy we could spend so much time with family we hadn't seen in a long time. We hope it won't be long before we can do it again!

Mother's Day (11 May 2014)

Mother's Day
My heart is full to think that Heavenly Father has trusted me with these three beautifully healthy children. I often feel unqualified to fulfill such a heavy responsibility, but I am so glad I am given this opportunity to try.

Mama Getaway (16 March 2014)

I had some airline credit that was going to expire so Joe took leave from work so that I could go to California to spend time with my brother and his family. We had a really great time. I was able to visit San Francisco for the first time. What a beautiful place that I would gladly go visit again. While I was there I ran my first half-marathon with Cassidy and Anita. It was a really great experience.

Alcatraz

Usually the kids are making signs for Joe's homecoming, but this time they made them for me. I don't know how Joe is able to leave for so long away from these kiddos during his deployments. I was gone having fun and I still missed them like crazy!

Winter Play (February 2014)

This year Joe planned a trip for him and I to go skiing in the Rocky Mountains. It was my first time snow skiing.  I fell about 7-10 times and Joe fell about hmm....zero times!...jerk! Though it was somewhat of a mind-over-matter (emotions) kind of thing, I did have a good time and am so glad I made it out alive! I think the next time we ski we will choose a less intimidating destination.

 On the ski lift

Apres (after) skiing
Each day after skiing we would get all warmed up and roam the village filled with stores and restaurants. This part of the day is just as fun as the skiing. It's like a reward for all the hard work we did throughout the day. Skiing is definitely exercise!

Our kids have never seen so much snow. They stayed with my sister and parents while we were gone. Indiana got record amounts of snow last winter so our kids were in heaven!

Odd Weather in the Panhandle (January - April 2014)

This year so far has had a wide range of crazy weather. We first experienced snow/ice in January, which is abnormal for any part of Florida. It was a pretty chilly winter to say the least. In April we experienced a storm unlike any we have had in this area. The rain poured and poured and poured....and poured for close to 20 hours. There was some serious flooding in some parts of the panhandle. Our yard had never been as flooded as it was, but fortunately the water did not flood the inside of our house. There were many effected by the flooding in the Pensacola and surrounding areas. Sadly, many did not carry flood insurance that lost their homes. It's during times like these that I am reminded to always be prepared.

The side of our yard turned into a creek

As you can see we were extremely blessed to have escaped this storm unscathed

This is what happened to a main road just a few miles down the road from our house

Our Fabulous 2013

Our Fabulous 2013
The year started out bittersweet for the Fish/Capel family. Joe's Grandpa Fish passed away January 16th and finally joined his sweet Grandma Fish after nearly 5 years without her. He was able to drive out to Utah with his sister Angie for the funeral service. Joe shared that he was able to spend some irreplaceable memories with his family during that few days.

Our last picture of the two of them together taken November 2007

February
So February was a pretty awesome month in my opinion. It was of course my 28th birthday, Valentines Day with the man (and kids) of my dreams and my first 15k (9.3miles) race. It was just the best!

March
During March we did our annual at home Easter Egg Hunt. This year we added more money eggs! I have a feeling that as they become older I will become more and more broke at Easter time! I just love Easter. The weather is almost always gorgeous at that time of year. It is the perfect time to celebrate the resurrection of our Savior, Jesus Christ. The symbolism of it all just amazes me and fills me with so much joy!

We finally have our first family dog, Athena! She is a precious little miniature Schnauzer. Our friends gave her to us before they moved overseas. The kids absolutely adore her and even though it has taken Joe and I awhile to adjust, she(and I can't believe I am writing this, but...) is a part of our family that we love.

Miss Lauren was selected to display her art in an art Festival held at Gulf Breeze High School. There were some really amazing art pieces there so it was an honor for her to be a part of that.

Mr. Nolan loved playing soccer. He always played offense and played very well for never playing soccer. He is excited to play again next season!

April

Just a few months after Joe lost his Grandpa Fish, I lost my Grandma Poor. On April 11th my Grandma went to live with our Father in Heaven. She was such a noble woman that I will always respect. I look forward to the day that we can be together again. I have so many cherished memories of her and I am so blessed to have them to remember her by.

This is what I call a tender mercy of our Lord. Driving down to Kentucky to bury Grandma, this was the view from the sky we witnessed. It was gorgeous! It was a great comfort to know that our Heavenly Father loves us. I saw it as a gift of comfort at that time.

It was so fun to go down one final time to Monticello, KY with my sister. Each summer as kids my sister and I spend at least a week with Grandma and Grandpa Poor. One of our silly memories was this house. Cattle used to graze the fields around it and also used to roam inside it. Every time we would go into town we would pass this house and we would joke with each other saying, "There's your dream house!" Grandma started it and then we each took our turns teasing each other with it! We were "tickled" (I use this word because this is a word Grandma Poor would have used) to see that the house was still standing after all these years!

Us 3 girls

May

Long story, but we had bees in our yard for about a year. The hives were not ours, but the beekeepers used our donated property to expand their cause to promote "urban sustainability and community cultivation." It was a fun experience for our family...minus the bee stings!

Happy 32nd Birthday Joe! We had his favorite this year...Turkish!

It was Lauren's idea to make him this "cup" cake! Very clever!

June
Let summer begin! For Nolan it meant preschool graduation and hello Kindergarten! For Lauren it meant saying goodbye to a friend moving away and so long to the 2nd grade!

Hello pool and beach weather! We went to the pool every day we could over the summer. Both Lauren and Nolan passed the swimming test at the YMCA. Owen is working really hard to get there too. He is so close! Once they pass the swim test they are allowed to go down the big slide. I'm sure Owen will get there by the end of next summer.

July
Happy 10 year anniversary to us!
It's too bad the kids didn't get the memo that this year was kind of a big deal for their mom and dad. Joe and I had plans to spend the night in Destin with 2 days filled with fun. The morning of our planned adventure Joe woke up to Nolan throwing up...oh did I mention he threw up in his mouth? Yuck! How's that for an anniversary gift! I don't think Joe will ever forget it! So, needless to say, plans got cancelled and we stayed home : (

 My anniversary surprise

Joe planned an evening of surprises for an early anniversary date.
This is called chocolate covered strawberries with a movie. Filet mignon with sauteed mushrooms and salad was before this. He sure knows how to make a girl happy!

Our friends from Turkey came to visit while they were in town. We had so much fun with Brian, Fatos, and Sandra (Brian's mom). Fatos and I had so much fun making our favorite, manti, a Turkish pasta soup (kind of like ravioli, but not really!)

Just a little cousin pillowcase-sac-racing time!

Beach time with the cousins

August

August was one of our busiest months of the year. First of all, our little Lauren turned 8! Turning 8 in our house is a BIG deal! Lauren chose to follow Jesus Christ's example and was baptized. She is such a delight to have in our family. Always trying to be a people pleaser and peacemaker. We are so pleased with her decision to be baptized into The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. Because Joe (Lauren's dad) got a short notice deployment, we were unable to baptize her on our planned date. She was instead baptized on her birthday! She will never forget her baptism date! So, just as I mentioned, Joe deployed with about a 10 day notice in August. He was supposed to be gone for up to 8 weeks. He was gone for about 4 months! "Yikes," said the mom that had just registered for full-time courses at University of West Florida! Joe left the day before the kids' first day of school and 1 week prior to my first day. After some thinking, juggling, crying and paying a fortune in childcare, I successfully completed that semester on the Dean's list. Though I would never wish that stress on anyone, I am stronger because of it!

September
Happy Birthday Owie!

Last night as a 3 year old

Talking to Daddy on his birthday!

The kids are on a video chat with their dad. There were monkeys everywhere!

October
Happy Birthday Nolan Bug!

Nolan requested homemade donuts for his birthday!

Nolan earned a "Terrific Kid" award at his school. I agree, he is pretty terrific!

Halloween 2013! Lauren- Egyptian Goddess, Nolan- Mario, and Owen- Train Conductor

Telling Daddy all about it!

November
This was a fun month of school fundraisers, field trips, and holiday festivities. There was plenty of eating, traveling, baking, making memories and we can't forget, "cousin time!"

Nolan at the Boosterthon run. This was a fundraiser (which I helped out in with his school's PTO...never again...yikes!) The fundraiser raised double the amount their normal fundraisers raise. The kids had a great time while learning important messages about teamwork and exercise.

This is just the coolest! Nolan's field trip was at the beach learning about marine science. LOVE!

Digging for "turtle eggs"

Owen's Thanksgiving Day party at school...he is a turkey!

Just hangin' out at the ol' Idle Wyld in Marion! This was a childhood favorite of mine to go skating. Our kids seemed to enjoy themselves as well.

Guess Who? Why not!

My mom is seriously one of the coolest and most talented people I know. She came up with all of these activities for our kids to do so that they weren't bored on Thanksgiving break. It was craft after craft. They loved being able to be creative while spending time with their cousins!

December
Daddy's homecoming and Christmas...a month full of bliss!

The kids were ecstatic to see their daddy when they got home from school! We didn't tell them the day he was coming home. Their faces tell it all!

Finally reunited...whew!

Merry Christmas!

We are now a Lego family. I tried and tried to hold off, but it could no longer wait. They love them!

Ms. Lauren loves to be creative so we got her a screen printing kit. She loves horses too so rather than spending thousands of dollars for lessons, she settled for this barbie/horse set.

All Owen asked for was a "farter" That kid loves talking about farts and poop and anything gross really. I'm still holding out for this stage to be over...so far it's lasted over a year....

Cheers to a blessed year for the Capel family
