Obsessing over a new car

This post is dedicated to all those out there who have ever bought a new car, and know the exhilaration that comes with it.

We have been in the market for a new car, for a while now.

Our current auto

Our little 1996 Nissan Quest van is on it's last legs, and we knew it would only be a matter of time before we were stranded somewhere with a car that had heaved it's last carbon-monoxide filled breath. I really didn't want to be in it when this happened, so we started into the long process of researching what car would take its place. We looked into all minivans, SUVs, pretty much anything with 7+ seating. The problem was, that while minivans are really great for families and have all the amenities, they don't really have the capability of going anywhere off road. On the other hand, SUV's, although very well equipped for going off road, don't have all the great amenities for families. We were at an impass. Enter into this scene, Kurt (my step-dad), a virtual car guru. I put this problem to him, and he says "the perfect car for you is a crossover SUV, specifically the Buick Enclave". A BUICK?!?!?! That wasn't my idea of an exciting new brand of car. Weren't Buicks for old people? He reassures me that we will really like it, and that it has a great, reliable, engine. (Kurt builds engines for a living, so I guess he would know) Okay, I thought, we'll at least look into it, if Kurt thinks it's a good one for us. We kept trying to spot Enclaves whenever we were out and about, but could never find one. Finally, we decided a visit to a dealership would be in order. When we got to the dealership and asked to see an Enclave this is what we saw:

Wow!! This is a Buick?!?! Hmmm, maybe we will look into it a little more. We took it for a test drive. Amazing! It was SO quiet, especially after my little van that has rattling windows, loose doors, and no noise insulation (a normal conversation in our car, currently is: Levi (yelling) "mhyf slkjt slka", me yelling back "What? I can't hear you.." He tries again, and I yell "why don't you wait to tell me when we get home!"). The Enclave has a 10 speaker BOSE surround sound system that makes you feel like you are there at the concert, instead of zooming down a freeway. It really helps that you can't hear the outside noise too. This is a enormous upgrade to our current blown out 4 speaker system, with broken CD player. Well, practically anything would have been, but the Enclave also comes with a port for my ipod to be plugged in directly to the sound system. Now, that, is luxury!! Another great feature is the remote rear-door automatic open. Ahhh,...... access to the cargo space with the push of a button. Let's just say that this small feature is currently in my top two important features. Right now, the rear door, to my van, not only is not automatic, but broken! Currently, the way that I get it to stay open is by having Levi and Calder stand on the bumper on either side, and hold it up above their heads. This is usually done while I am hurriedly loading groceries in, with small boys yelling "MOM! Hurry, hurry! My arms are hurting, I can't hold it up much longer!!" It's just the simple things in life.... There are a million other little features that I love (you know: heated seats, remote start, 19" chrome finish plated aluminum wheels, leather seats, memory seats, two sunroofs, full sized third row seating-meaning 3 adults can sit back there comfortably..and on and on and on).

Ansel likes to point out that it has blue eyes just like our whole family! I think I fell in love with it on that first test drive (even after test driving a bunch of other luxury crossovers). So, we ask, "what is the price?" The answer comes back "$42k" I think I swallowed my gum, at that point. Darn. My dreams are shattered. There is no Way that I am spending that kind of money on a car. We go back to Kurt. Could he find a good deal at the auction? (he has a dealers license and can go to those things) He starts looking into it for us. Meanwhile we get on with our lives, and put it on the back burner. Months go by. Finally, the van is starting to show signs of immediate death and a new car comes back to the forefront. We do all the research into financing, pricing, etc, and come up with our limit. If he can find a Buick for $25k, or less, we will get it, otherwise it's a Toyota Sienna for us. Well, he is a miracle worker, after all. Even with having just suffered a massive heart attack 4 weeks ago, he goes to the auction every week checking out the inventory. He watches Enclaves sell, and is pretty confident he can get one for us within our limits. Yesterday, he did it, he found one, bid on it and got it! Yesterday, exactly one month before Christmas, we became the proud owners of a 2008 Gold Mist Metallic Buick Enclave CXL!
Ansel, now our car has blonde hair to go with it's blue eyes, it definitely belongs to us!
Here it is: (well one that looks exactly like it, anyway) Celebrate with me!!

Kaelan Time

What would you do if you saw these just laying on the ground?!

Well, first you would poke it to see if it was safe,

Then, you would realize how soft it was and feel a great urge to squish it, and so you would!

After that you would pick another one up, and wonder.... "where are all these coming from?"

Mom would say, "Kaelan, look up!"

And so you would.

Then you would smile, because you could see the answer to your unspoken question!

They come from trees! Now...... how do I get more down?

Sometimes it is so cool to be a big kid. Like, when you get to go to the big kid's school, on a saturday, and play on their playground.....all by yourself.

First things first. The slide is number one priority. But how to get there?
Up the stairs, over the bridge.....

Yay! You've found it. But, now that you are a big kid, you don't want mommy's help. So you point and say "down" to mommy. She complies and waits at the bottom of the slide for you.

Weeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee!

and again and again and again...... until mommy tries desperately to find another activity to interest you.

Okay, then....... more stairs. The scarier for mommy, the better.

Up you go!!! Mommy says "don't look down!"

But, you do anyway!

See how fun this is mom!?

Other uses for a soccer ball.....

This is what Kaelan does with Levi's soccer ball..........

While Levi is out doing this.........

Ode to Halloween!

Here's to my favorite Holiday, and all of the fun things we do!

Every FHE before Halloween, we always carve pumpkins and make caramel apples. This year every boy got their own pumpkin and tried to do as much of it by themselves as they could. Poor Levi, this year he didn't have very good luck with pumpkins. His first one was totally rotted and moldy on the inside....YUCK! Who wants to reach their hands into that muck! Luckily, we had six, and Kaelan didn't really need one so we let Levi have another. Unfortunately, that one too, was bad, just not AS bad. He muscled past the gag reflex and cleaned it out and carved it! Funny thing was, his was the last of the pumpkins to "melt" on the front porch!!

Can you see the brown inside his pumpkin?!

Ansel looking on as Calder carves out his design.

Kaelan REALLY wanted to carve a pumpkin too, so finally I put him in his high chair, gave him a piece of Calder's pumpkin and a "safe" carver. He went to town, and had a great time. He even sampled some raw pumpkin and promptly spit it out!

Kaelan, and the pumpkin daddy carved for him!

Yay! WE did it!!

The other Catastrophe that night, besides the rotting pumpkin, was my attempt to roast the pumpkin seeds and clean up... at the same time. This ended up with burnt pumpkin seeds, wasted time, and more clean up......Plus a lot of air freshener!

I am Calder's room mom and I got to be in charge of his "Harvest party" (can't say Halloween anymore, might hurt someone's feelings!) on Halloween day. We made caramel apples, played Ghost Bingo, colored, ate yummy food, and made a craft! Yay for 1st grade!

Ansel, playing Ghost Bingo.

Calder, making his Skeleton puppet.

My favorite part of Trick or Treating with kids is when they are Kaelan's age and trying to figure out what, in the world, we are doing walking around the dark, all dressed up. I love watching their eyes as we go door to door, knocking, and see them get ROUND with amazement when the smiling lady puts candy in their bag. Life is good!

Here is our trick-or-treating posse!
Every year we go with the same group of friends, around our neighborhood.
It's a great time, for kids and adults alike!
(all the parents are snapping photos at the same time... the kids can figure out where to look!)

Little Dumbo, loving the freedom of roaming the streets at night!

Kaelan, figuring out that what they put in his bag is CANDY, and wanting to eat it all right then and there, wrapper and all!

A couple of houses had candy in pumpkins, on the front porch. Here, Kaelan is checking out our pumpkins to see if they had candy in them too.

Ansel, playing with his loot. He was the only one who ate his gummy eyeball. The rest of the boys were too grossed out to try.

Mannah from Heaven!!

Mine..... All mine!! (Except for when mom wants some!)

Levi organized this pile with a purpose. You are to click on this photo and play "I spy" by reading the note on the yellow sticky and finding the candy listed there!
Good luck!

The perpetual pattern maker (Levi) Every year he has to sort and organize/catalog his candy before consuming any of it. In fact, that night, he only ate one piece! The lucky candy???? A Butterfinger. I have to say the kid's got good taste!

I hope everyone had as great a Halloween as we did! Now, on to candy consumption control!

Chaperoning a Field Trip

This past week Calder had his very first 1st grade field trip. They (along will all 5 other 1st grade classes from our school) went to Lee Farms to visit the animals and the pumpkin patch. I was able to chaperon (and ride the Bus.....wooo whooo!!) with Kaelan in tow. I did have triple duty though, because I was also supposed to be the official photographer of this trip (for the yearbook) for our class, be in charge of three little boys that all wanted to go different directions (and don't seem to remember their own names when you call them), and keep Kaelan (the 4th little boy) from running off or throwing rocks at people (he loves rocks and seems to think that people would really love it if he threw the rocks at them). It was really crazy, but fun. Calder LOVED having Kaelan and I along. I was Calder, Steele (Calder's best bud), and Ethan's chaperon.

At first everything was great, (other than having to look 5 ways at once), but then Kaelan really got into doing his own thing and I had to keep an eye on him constantly. Finally, Mrs. Lang, Calder's teacher, asked if she could hold Kaelan so that I could photograph more easily. She has an 18 month old baby boy name Kai and she says that Kaelan looks just like him. Kaelan loved her, so they both had a good time.

One of Kaelan's (and Calder's) favorite things at the Farm......PUPPIES!!!
They were so cute!! It really made me want to get one.

This was really neat. It is hard to see, but this enclosure was for bunnies, it was all fenced in and riddled with burrows. It was so cool to see them popping up from them. I have never seen that before.

Every animal we saw had a lunch made up of corn stalks. They were all going to town on them, so they must be tasty.

I think that the kids were most fascinated by the Turkeys. They were so huge and aggressive, puffing up their feathers and posturing at us.

Kaelan was amazed by these birds, but he didn't dare get too close.
The birds are facing off the kids in this picture, puffing up their feathers! So funny.

The nicest, most calm horses I have ever seen. These kids were screaming and jumping and grabbing at them and they didn't shy once.

Calder, helping mom out. See the rock in Kaelan's hand? Yes, he was throwing rocks at the kids.

These painted hay bails were all over the farm. The boys were always trying to climb on top and the girls were always exclaiming "oh how cute!"

This sign didn't really work for our kids, we still had to tell them!

Baby chicks! The kids were told they could only pet them with two fingers, but some of the girls couldn't resist trying to catch one.

Kaelan was pretty impressed with the Apple Cider mill. He watched the whole process and them asked "eeees" (please) to have a drink of it. We all got to try some, yum!!

Steele and Calder (trying to do tough guy poses, and failing miserably .... they are just too cute!)

A type of pumpkin they grow, it looks warty. Yuck. He showed the kids 5-6 different types they were pretty amazed that there was more the one type of pumpkin.

Kaelan and his buddy, Mrs. Lang

Who can resist this cute little pink bottomed piglet?! (well, the kids did, they all thought he was gross, poor piglet..... he is so cute!!)

Kaelan looking on at his treasure field of rocks, so many to choose from, so little time.

All the little girls loved Kaelan and wanted to help out, I had to keep saying "Don't grab him by the hood, that will choke him!"

The proud big brother, playing with his baby!

Calder and Ethan trying to "help" me out with Kaelan.

Kaelan loved picking pumpkins, he kept bringing one after the next, and then promptly switched to kicking them around the patch, like a soccer ball!

At one point, one of the little girls fell down and hurt her knee, Kaelan was so concerned for her. This is him, looking on at the girl crying. He was so worried, it was really cute.

Apparently, cats really like to eat rotting pumpkin. Who knew?!

The final attraction.... a hay ride.

After the hay ride we all ate lunch and then hopped back on the bus. Ethan, Calder and Steele were very tired. Right here, Calder is giving me the "look" that says "I am feeling put upon because you wouldn't let Kaelan sit with us boys!"

Kaelan on his first school bus ride (well, actually second since this is on the way home!!) Some one needs a nap.................... Mom!
