Hiking and a home

Well, a lot has happened since our last update in April...the snow finally melted and has now returned, we've enjoyed backpacking (Spanish Peaks in Colorado over Memorial Day and Medicine Bow in Wyoming over July 4...where it snowed on us for Independence Day), camping, hiking, skiing...and the minor detail that we bought a house!

We closed on the house in mid-July, moved our stuff in, and promptly left town- Joel to Boulder for a wedding, and me to Nashville for a wedding, but we are now pretty much settled in. My mom came out to help set things up and paint, and it now really feels like home! Since then, my parents came back out for another visit, and the Butlers came out in October. The honorable JP has been out to Colorado twice since my last blog post- for those keeping track at home, that is 4 visits in our 1.5 years in Colorado.

We are loving owning our own home, and the location of this house has inspired me to rename our blog. We live on the north side of our street which means that snow melts from our yard and driveway at least 3 times faster than our across-the-street neighbors. Colorado home buying lesson #1! I'll include some photos of the past months and hopefully keep up with the blog a bit better!

Due to popular demand...

...a video of an 80 pound mutt crawling through a door made for lap dogs:

When I just played this video back to make sure it work, the superstar pictured above jumped up from her nap and ran to me thinking I was calling her.

Possible snowstorm tonight and 50 mph wind gusts for the past 6 days...April in Colorado?

Four inches of snow on the ground, and not a drop of milk left in the fridge. How could a Southerner make such a mistake?

Springtime Snow

Since Joel is out working snow, I figured this would be a good time for a quick update...

As far as weather goes, the ground was dry at 7:30 this evening, and here is a picture of our backyard now at 9:00 p.m.:
(Sorta hard to see in the photo, but maybe 2-4 inches? and LOTS of wind!)

In other news, I was down to one part-time job for a bit, but just started a new one yesterday! Things are going well there so far, and I saw my first rat patient...literally, a rat.

Joel is really enjoying work and was promoted to Operations Manager!!! (I can't remember if I posted that already). This means he is out of the field for the most part and doing lots of planning and shovel-holding. He got new uniforms which should get much less dirty than his old ones, and he will eventually get a truck that he can bring home.

We've been enjoying a few days of wonderful weather thrown into the mix, and our friend Kelly and I took a girls' day ski trip a few weeks ago and did some mid-week hiking before my new job started. Joel and I plan to get back to the slopes soon, as the season is quickly drawing to a close (though with this crazy weather, we could be skiing in June!)...but we're also certainly looking forward to camping and the other adventures warmer weather brings.

Brief updates

Okay, so we'll see if I can sum up the past 2 months in a post that is short enough to keep your attention!

I don't really remember what else happened in December after our last post and before our trip South, but I'm assuming it included work, snow, hiking, and Christmas festivities. In the middle of the month, we headed to Memphis for BIZ AND TIM'S WEDDING!!!
The bride and groom (hi biz! (and tim!)).
Chuck and Joel constructing their last Butler wedding speech...and Parks...

The visit was short but sweet and full of Canadian jokes. We also enjoyed Butler Christmas 2K9 before heading down I-55 to Johnston Christmas 2K9. Much fun was had by all in both locales.

I found out that I didn't have to work Christmas Eve Eve, so I changed my flight to return westward Christmas Eve, while Joel headed back to Colorado Springs. Meteorologists and Dallas International Airport had other plans, though, because we received a call on the way to the airport letting me know my flight was canceled and there were no other options besides leaving Christmas Day....so I spent one more night in Mississippi! Which was wonderful, except that Joel was in Colorado...but we survived and I enjoyed a wonderful Christmas Eve with my parents, grandfather, and uncle!
Johnstons enjoying the restored King Edward Hotel in downtown Jackson

I finally arrived in Denver on Christmas night and we had our 3rd Christmas at my aunt and uncle's! Quite the whirlwind adventure.
Hurley and some of her Christmas presents.

Let's see....from there, we had New Year's Eve...our friends Andrew and Kelly (and their dog (Hurley's boyfriend) Wyatt) came over for snacks and libations, and we barely stayed awake for midnight, at which time we walked down the street in the freezing cold to watch the fireworks on Pike's Peak. Now this sounded wonderful on paper, and I'd looked forward to it all week, but I didn't think about the fact that the summit of this mountain is 15 miles west and 8000 feet above us, so the fireworks were sorta hard to see without binoculars (which of course none of us took down the street).

January pretty much flew by...we went on some great hikes around Colorado Springs, almost lost Hurley on one of them (she ran off after some scent and we found her after dark...not a good thing!).

Hurley walking on Stanley Reservoir...this made me a bit nervous!
My arm bruises from hitting about every rock down the Stanley Canyon trail (the trail follows a creek which is currently a 2.2 mile long block of ice).
Not even sure what to say about this...just saw a limo with a "hamburger holder" on the way to the mountains.
Ski poles showing the depth of the snow on one of Loveland's slopes.

A balloon on the way to Sol Vista.
The view from our lunch in Sol Vista.

And now we're in February! Joel and I took our first intentional vacation in over 4 years this past weekend. We've been trying to figure out where where wanted to go for awhile, so we finally chose Glenwood Springs, CO. I wanted to go somewhere with hot springs (actually, Glenwood has the largest outdoor hot springs pool in the country FYI) and hiking and Joel wanted the option to ski. We had a great time soaking in the 104 degree pool, skiing at Snowmass, touring Aspen (and sticking out like a sore thumb- I forgot my fur coat to wear with my cowboy boots!), and hiking to one of the most picturesque spots I can recall- Hanging Lake.
The Hot Springs Pool.
In downtown Glenwood Springs.

Hanging Lake photos:

(a beaver in the lake- he probably doesn't have much competition in this frigid water)
Thank you, public, for the bench you placed along the trail.

"Spouting Rock" was the source of the water for Hanging Lake...Joel kept thinking it was "Spittin' Rock," and said that if it were in the South, that would be the name. (FYI: pictures don't do it justice!)

A little place called Assssppppennn....
Aspens along the slopes at Snowmass.
A view towards Hotel Colorado and the Glenwood Hot Springs pool at night.
A medical marjuana dispensary in Glenwood Springs...these are the hot topic in the news around here recently.

A view eastbound on I-70 on the way back to the real world.

We returned to Colorado Springs rested and refreshed, enjoyed a Superbowl Party with friends from our Sunday School class, and then Joel hit the town for snow duty...and hasn't really been home since! He left last night around 11, came home for about 1.5 hours today, and doesn't think he'll be home until tomorrow...and we've only had about 3-5 inches! I don't even want to know how much he'll work if we ever get a huge storm!

One of the 8 deer I ran across in Palmer Park December 30, 1 mile north of our house when I was playing with my new GPS. I had to scare this one so that it wouldn't come between me and Hurley!

Just some photos!

I was just looking at our cute Hurley dog and thought y'all may be missing her, so I thought I'd throw a few pictures up from the past 2 months that we've been out of the blogosphere...updates will hopefully follow within a few days!

You must be kidding me!

Current Conditions:

Right Now for
Colorado Springs, CO (80909)

Mostly Cloudy and Windy

Feels Like
-24°F
Updated: Dec 8 05:45 p.m. MT

The wind chill where Joel's property is located: -37....yes, that "-" is a negative.

I actually ended up with a snow day today! I was quite proud of myself after I drove all the way to Monument, and then they said I could go back home if I wanted to because we wouldn't be too busy with the bad weather. The rest of the week should be "warmer"... balmy 40 degrees this weekend, which is a temperature I never thought I'd be so excited to see.

I'm not quite sure how much snow we have in our yard...but I'm going to guess 4" or so? Hurley had a great time romping through the neighborhood on our walk a little bit ago. Going for a quick lap around the block isn't very easy here during the winter: long johns, fleece pants, ski pants, long sleeves, sweatshirt, fleece, ski jacket, hat, scarf, and gloves and then we can head out of the garage!

Joel has been going full force since Saturday night when the storm started. He is now managing a single property for snow removal- this property is very picky and as Joel says, "they expect you to be out there catching the snow in buckets before it hits the ground," so he hasn't been home much! Well, enough about the weather right now...as far as what else has been going on since we blogged, we were able to attend a Broncos game! My aunt and uncle had tickets from a friend, so we got to watch the Broncos get smeared by San Diego...but it was a lot of fun!

We spent our first Thanksgiving away from home, which was sad, but we were able to head to Denver to spent it with my aunt and uncle and some of their friends. The day after Thanksgiving, we headed up to Loveland for a day of skiing. Most of the resorts weren't fully open yet, so we headed to this sport that is not too far from Denver. We had a great time and it is fun to think we can just run up and ski when we have an afternoon or day open.

Not much else to report...we had our Sunday School Christmas party this past Saturday, and Joel won the prize for ugliest Christmas sweater- I was so proud! We also went up to the Pike National Forest to cut a Christmas tree!

Only 209 hours until we're back in the SOUTH for Biz's wedding and family Christmases!
