Elise's Great Escape

While Chad and his folks battled the floods I hopped a flight to Seattle to reconnect with friends and favorite haunts. Highlights included walks around Green Lake; reconnecting with the flavors of Chocolati, Taste of India, Louie’s, and World Wrapps; reveling in the lush green of Olympic National Park; attending the Seattle LDS Seventh Ward; and taking time to contemplate, read, and write. But most of all it was lots and lots of talking and just being with people who’ve been a huge part of my life for the past ten years. Thanks to Chad for a most wonderful birthday present!

It’s always fun when Grandpa comes

Chad’s parents came for a visit over his spring break in March to find everything very different from when they were here to help us move in back in August. We started them off with some fun, visiting the Peabody Museum at Yale (an hour away) and doing some low-key home improvement projects. Then, shortly before I took off for Seattle, we had a big rain (REALLY big). Everything seemed fine until the day after the rain stopped when Chad discovered water in the unfinished side of the basement. We spent the afternoon carting tools, unpacked boxes, and miscellaneous items up the basement stairs to dry in the back yard. Chad pulled out the Shop Vac and we assumed it wouldn’t be long before we’d look back and laugh. We were mistaken.

Over a week later, after moving all the toys upstairs, pulling up the carpet, and vacuuming up unending gallons, the water finally stopped seeping in through the foundation. Chad’s parents were troopers through the whole thing. Fortunately, they were able to escape to Massachusetts for a few days on a family history tour. We just hope they’ll want to visit again. After what we’ve put them through the past two times they may have to think it over!
