May 2014
May is always a busy month of the year as we close out the school year.  It was filled with all sorts of fun activities.  The first, and my most favorite, was Kennedy's field trip to the one room school house.  It was so much fun and I can't wait to go with Paxton when he is in second grade.  The county has preserved an actual one room school house from 1905, it set in a remote location and you really feel like you have been transported to another time.  The kids brought their lunches and they could not use any items like prepackaged food, plastic bags, coolers, etc.  We wrapped all of Kennedy's lunch in bandannas and brown paper.  The kids did their lessons on slate boards and even made paper cups from which to drink.  At recess, they were given authentic time period toys.  I felt like I was in a scene from Little House on the Praire.
May also brought end of year ceremonies.  One thing I really like about awards at the kids school is that they do not honor grades, attendance, or even behavior.  Each child receives an award for a special character trait, or virtue that they have shown throughout the year.  Paxton received an award for Friendship and Kennedy for Joyfulness.  Below are two videos from Paxton's Kindergarten Celebration.  Paxton is on the top row in the royal blue shirt.
We spent many Saturday's hiking during May - the weather was absolutely beautiful all month long.  And finally, when you have a summer birthday, you miss not celebrating at school.  So, Paxton celebrated his birthday at school a month early. He took cupcakes to share with his class.

April 2014
We had lots of fun times in the month of April.  The first of which was, Book Character Day at school.  Kennedy chose "The Paper Bag Princess" (one of my favorite children's books) and Paxton chose "Alexander, and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day" (another of my favorites).  Both kids look less than thrilled in their pictures, but they told me they were acting like their book characters - ohhhh. We had a great time celebrating our RISEN Lord and Savior on Easter Sunday.  We had an egg hunt after lunch - we copy my Mom's egg hunt style.  Each egg has a number and the number coordinates to a certain prize.  The kids love it!  Especially, when Paxton or Ken get something girly with their egg number.  Another of my favorites at school is Kindergarten Kite Day.  I loved it when Kennedy was in Kindergarten and again with Paxton.  All of the kindergarten classes and their parents go out on the soccer field and fly a kite together.  The kids absolutely love it and it's fun to see all the kites fill the sky.
