OUR GRANDAUGHTER IS HERE!

We are pleased to announce the birth of our granddaughter. As of yet we don't have a name to announce but it will be forthcoming. She weighed in at 7 lbs. 1 oz. and is 20 inches long. Mom and baby are doing well.
Here is our beautiful little girl just moments after her birth.
Grandma is so excited to have her first granddaughter.

Dad is showing big brother Tate how to gently hold her and Tate isn't quite sure why she is crying so much.
Here is a family photo. Tanya always looks great after having a baby.

TRIP TO HOGLE ZOO!!

When we got back from Dallas on Wednesday I wasn't done vacationing so I asked Tanya if I could take Tate to the zoo on Thursday. It is fun to go to the zoo with little kids they get so excited about the animals.
Tate likes to watch the elelphants.
Last time we went to the zoo we weren't able to see the zebra's. This time we were able to see a lot of the animals eating their lunch.

The newest addition to Hogle Zoo is a new baby giraffe. Tate was fascinated with the baby giraffe.
Tate was a little intimidated by this huge gorilla so grandma sat with him.

Tates favorite animals are always the monkeys. He could sit and watch them for hours. The monkeys in this cage were very active and fun to watch.
This monkey was very loud. He kept making a really deep barking sound.
More monkeys!

Tate wanted to see if he was as big as a orangoutang. I think he needs a little bit longer arms then he will be able to swing from the trees.

CARTER'S FIRSTS!!

While in Dallas with Kendra and Brett were were able to witness some very important firsts in Carter's life.
Carter's first steps. It is so exciting when your baby takes their first steps.
It is amazing how fast little ones learn. When I got to Kentucky Carter would stand on his own. When we got to Dallas he decided he could walk because he wanted his dad their to see his first steps.

Carter's other first that we were a witness to was his first haircut. I was amazed how still he sat for his dad while he trimmed the fine baby hair off. His hair in the back was getting long and he kept pulling at it so mom and dad decided to cut it off. He was a really good boy.
Here is Carter with mom and dad just after his new haircut. He looks like such a little boy now.
I thought we were in Kentucky? Is that the Washington Monument? At first sight you may think you are lost but if you are in Fairfield Kentucky you will see a replica of the Washington Monument. It is 2/3's the size of the Washington Monument.
What is this monument? It is the Jefferson Davis Monument. Who is Jefferson Davis? He was the only Confederate President.

This is a very different angle of the monument.
Here is a little tidbit on Jefferson Davis.

OTHER KENTUCKY ATTRACTIONS!!

On our way to Dallas Kendall and I did a little more sight seeing. We stopped by the Shaker museum in South Union. The Shaker's were a religious group that developed during the 19th century. This was one of the 24 villages that was founded in 1807. This is one of the 75 buildings that were built in this village. Only nine buildings remain.

This is the Centre House.

I was fascinated with the looms that they had. They are all hand made.

This gentleman is spining thread. The thread he is spinning is from a cousin to the lama.

In the Shaker community there is a sisters side and a brothers side in every house. They do not have family quarters. If a family joined the church the children were a part of the community and were considered a part of the community. This picture is a room where the sisters would have stayed. As you can see they were very simple people.

This is a brothers room. In each room there was only one rocking chair allowed unless their is an elder brother or sister in the room and then they may have two. The Shaker religion was named for the way they worship. One observer called them the Shaker's because of the way they congregated in a circle and danced.

CORVETTE MUSEUM!!

If there is a car museum to go to we will find it. Bowling Green, Kentucky is home of the Corvette. This is the museum where people actually donate theirs cars for show.
Kendall, I and Carter in fron of the museum.
Kendra's favorite car.

Kendall's favorite vette.

Carter's favorite vette.
Ellen's favorite corvett is the 1953. This is the first year they were built.

CAVES & ANIMALS!!

Kentucky is known for its mammoth caves. We went to Kentucky Down Under, Diamond
Caverns, and Lost River caves. If you ever want to see some cool caves these are some excellent choices.
This is Kendall, Carter, and me going down into one of the caves. I think this one is at Kentucky Down Under.
This are some of the stalagtite and stalagmite formations that were in the caves. These take hundreds of years to form.
Here are more formations in the caves.

Inside the caves there are tunnels that will lead to other parts of the cave or openings somwhere above ground.
These are so amazing to see. The other great thing about the caves is that they are very cool on a hot humid day. Aren't these amazing formations?
In Diamond Caverns, there is a place where people use to get married. They had to ban the weddings though because there were people getting hurt becuase the caves get slippery as water from frequent rain storms make the rock wet. The space here is also quit narrow so you wouldn't be able to invite to many guests.
This is what a stalagmite looks like when you cut it open. Pretty amazgin isn't it.This is the opening to Lost River Cave. This particular cave is in Bowling Green. For years it was used as a place for dances and was also popular with the boot leggers. At one point people used it to get rid of their garbage. Some citizens in Bowling Green decided to clean the place up and make some walking trails and let people tour the cave.
This is a dark picture but this is the pavilion at the mouth of the cave that they use still today for weddings and partys. It is a nice cool place for a summer time wedding.
This is the opening that you go in to go down to get into the boat. When it rains to much they have to close this cave down because the place that opens up into the back of the cave is very narrow. While you are in the boat you have to duck down for about the first five minutes so you don't hit your head on the celing. Then it opens up really wide again. The other pictures we took were to dark but this was one of our favorite tours.
At Kentucky Down Under they also have kangaroos and an aviary. They also have some Emu's and Camel's. The Camel's were especially stinky as you can tell from Kendra's expression.
This is a male red kangaroo. He likes to lay around in the warm Kentucky sun and let you pet him. There fur is very soft.
Carter was not afraid of any of the kangaroos and wanted to touch them and sit on them.
Kendall was holding this parakeet and Carter stuck his finger out and the parakeet nipped his finger. He didn't cry but looked at his mom as if to say, "Hey that bird bit me."
These are some other birds that we were able to feed. You have to hold really still so they will come and land on your arm.

SUMMER VACATION!!

Kentucky!

For our summer vacation this year Kendall and I went to Kentucky. Our daughter Kendra is getting her Master's and had to go to Western Kentucky University to do clinicals this summer. Kendall and I went and helped her with Carter while she went to school. Our good friends, the Spencer's, let us stay at there home during our trip.
This is a picture of the Spencer's home. It is nestled back in a forest of trees. I always forget how green it is in Kentucky. We really appreciated the hospitality of the Spencer's. They have a beautiful home and pool.
This is Carter and Kendra. Carter is 10 months old now and is a very active little guy. As the Spencer's home is back off the road Carter and I took lots of walks down the driveway to get some exercise.
The Spencer's also have a pool that was great to cool off in on those hot humid days. Carter loves the water and enjoyed playing in the pool with grandpa.
While we were there Deb took us to one of the county fairs in the area. Since Carter was wearing green we thought it would be fun to get a picture of him sitting in the middle of a 4-H clover.
This is Duncan. He is Tyler's very big dog. We had to keep a very close eye on Carter as Duncan thought he might be a play toy. For some reason he really took to me too and would run by me and almost knock me down. Duncan loved chasing after his toys.
This is a picture of the Spencer's, and Kendall and I. Thank you again for letting us stay with you.
