Aaron's Neck Problems

The past month has been an interesting one for our family as far as medical issues go.  Typically, we have been an extremely healthy family, but things took a turn for the worse in January and February.  In the previous post, we noted Austin's broken leg.  He has since had his cast removed and is slowly learning to walk again (he is favoring his leg a little too much).  Jensine has also been a little laid up with a sore back for the past little while.  And I have had my own issues with my neck, which seems to be taken care of now.

For at least the past year, though almost certainly for most of my life, I had a small lump just below my jawline on the right side of my neck.  I visited the doctor in early 2010 for an annual check-up and asked about the lump.  The doctor told me to give it a few months and then to come back if it doesn't go away.  It never went away, so I went back to my doctor and he referred me to an ENT.  In late January, I visited the ENT and he told me that he suspected that the lump was a brachial cleft cyst.  He recommended a biopsy and an MRI and, if necessary, surgery.  The MRI went fine, but the extensive prodding of my neck for the biopsy caused my neck to swell.  Here is one picture of what my neck looked like.

The biopsy was on a Friday.  On Tuesday afternoon, I drove 90 miles to Willmar, MN (the ENT visits Marshall monthly, but practices in Willmar) and the doctor removed 50 mL of brown fluid from my neck.  The swelling did not go down, but my neck continued to fill with fluid and got extremely painful.  It turned red and three days later (Friday), I went back up to Willmar to have it looked at.  Here was my neck the second time:

This time he cut a hole in my neck, put approximately six inches of packing in my neck which I was to slowly pull out one inch a day.  My neck continued to drain and the pressure abated.

On the next Monday, February 6, I went back to Willmar and had a cystic excision and parotidectomy (removing cyst and small piece of the parotid gland).  They knocked me out and the surgery took about three hours.   They also left a little drain in my neck to ensure that my neck would not fill with fluid again.  I was able to go home that night and took the week off from work to recover.  The pain wasn't too great, but my neck would be very sore if I did not rest my head every couple of hours.  Here I am a day or two after surgery:

It has now been two weeks, and I am pretty much healed now.  Here is my neck now:

Immobilized

Wednesday turned out to be an eventful day. We went to playgroup at the church and while we were there, Austin was running to me, didn't see a basketball, and rolled/fell over it. It really didn't look like much of a fall, but the way he reacted made it seem pretty bad. He kept crying and saying that he wanted to move his leg, but he couldn't. He didn't want me touch it. So, we went home to see if maybe lying on the couch and watching a show would help. It did, in a way. It was distracting, but he would still scream every once in a while. So Aaron came home to watch Isaac and Cameron, and Austin and I went to the doctor. Thankfully they got us in immediately, took an x-ray, and that's when we found out that he had a double fracture on his Tibia. Poor kid. No wonder he was screaming. I'm amazed he calmed down ever at all.

Our pediatrician referred us to a specialist to get the cast on. That was an experience. Austin had woken up that day at 5am. It was now, at this point, 12:30 and he hadn't eaten lunch yet. So we had a triple threat going on. Little sleep, no lunch, very hurt leg. BUT, we made it through and now he has his very own blue cast. He'll have to wear it for four weeks. He's not supposed to put any weight on his leg...which makes for some interesting scenarios. Using the potty perhaps one of the main ones.

He's really doing pretty great about not being able to move much so far. It still hurts him, and I think that's the best counter to his maybe wanting to move around more. He's still gets bummed about things--like not being able to go down the little Tykes slide Cameron got for Christmas. But he has informed me that his Spider-Man has a blue cast on his leg, just like him! Amazing timing and coincidence. :)

Isaac is really helping out a lot. He's taking a lot of pride in being Austin's helper. To the degree where he gets angry at me if I don't let him help Austin enough. Very entertaining. I'm just hoping this desire to really help, and play with Austin while he's sitting down continues on for the next month.

Having these blue rocking chairs is making this a lot easier. Especially at night. Last night he couldn't sleep laying down, but could sleep laying on this chair.

Holding his new Transformer--picked out for him by his dad and Isaac. A toy to help this next month go easier.

And Then There Were (Will Be) Four!!!

Jensine and Aaron are happy to announce that on July 8, 2012 (or anytime around that date), our family will grow by one and our son/daughter will be born.  Below are some ultrasound pictures of our little alien baby.

Trick or Treat!

The boys definitely got into the Halloween spirit this year. It all started when we went on a walk one week previous and the boys yelled at every house that "Halloween is almost here!". I think part of the reason why they were so excited was these amazing paper machete masks that Aaron made. Every time I look at them I'm still floored that he did this.
Isaac and Austin had a blast at the Marshall Branch Primary Halloween party. Face-painting, bobbing for apples, eating donuts off a string, and then doing a trunk or treat--what's not to love?

Aaron is officially in charge of all pumpkin carving. For multiple reasons, the main one being that he likes to do it. The boys helped a bit this year getting the guts of the pumpkin out. Neither one was such a fan of it. And I can't say that I blame them.
There was a definite theme this year--Superheroes! The boys were pretty excited about this pumpkin, particularly Cameron. He thought that the candle inside the pumpkin, lighting it up, was about the coolest thing ever.
The time for trick or treating arrives and so out rolls our "Super 4" (Isaac's nickname). Batman, Spider-Man, a "scary" dragon, and Clark Kent. I think Isaac was pretty proud of the fact that his dad was pretending to be Superman. They had such a good time trick or treating. It was nice weather, and we went for a while. Austin and Cameron sat most of the time in the stroller--Austin getting out for when we rang the doorbell. Isaac walked the whole time, and tried his hardest to start a conversation at every door.

Hope you all had a good Halloween!

Programs of All Sorts

We pretty much start out our days with a very familiar scene. Aaron gives the boys a hug and kiss good-bye, after Cameron has had some serious cuddling time with his dad. If that doesn't happen, there are a LOT of tears when the car pulls away.
Isaac likes to try and convince me now and then that he really is 8. Or, at least, wants the responsibilities of an older child. He got up on a chair after breakfast and announced that he wanted to do the dishes. I was a little hesitant, I could just imagine water all over the place--but he proved me wrong. He kept the water (mostly) in, and even organized them nicely to put in the dishwasher. I was shocked, and hopeful that this joy of doing the dishes can be continued on for years to come.
The boys ask me every once in a while to watch TV while they eat lunch. It almost always gets a "no"--so they decided to take matters into their own hands. This would be their "TV", to which they added a Spider-Man coloring page, and Isaac telling his own rendition of a previous show they'd watched with their dad.
To say that Austin likes ramen may be an understatement. Which, is fairly clear by this expression.
The boys both participated in the primary program this year, even though Austin is still in nursery. Isaac got to "write" his own part--about his favorite scripture story (Captain Moroni), and the nursery went up to join the primary for one song. I was so proud of both them, they did awesome. Isaac had his part memorized and spoke into the microphone nice and clear, and Austin can definitely sing with volume and emotion.

Minnesota State Fair 2011

On August 26 of this year, we headed to the Twin Cities and visited the Minnesota State Fair.  The Minnesota State Fair is held annually and draws a very large number of people.  The photo below is a great example of the sea of people that fills the large fairgrounds.

We got there nice and early and started the fun. We purchased some discount ride tickets and let the boys ride some of the various carnival rides.
Isaac loving the ride he was just tall enough for.

"Sandwich!"
After the rides, we headed down to look at the different livestock.  The fair horses, cows, pigs, sheep, chickens, turkeys, pigeons, rabbits, goats, and various other animals.  The large buildings don't necessarily smell very good, but the boys like looking at the animals.  My favorite thing is the huge mother pig with the piglets that they make sure to have every year.  They let you pet the piglets, which are very cute.
Cameron having a blast looking at the animals.
My little piggies.
We next stopped for some delicious cheese curds, Cameron fell asleep, and we cruised around a little while we waited for Nancy (Jensine's sister) and Mike (Jensine's dad) to arrive.
Cheese curds!  Mmmmmm...
Finally!
Once we met Nancy and Mike, we looked at some of the livestock a little more and then had some lunch.  After that, Austin fell asleep sitting in the stroller.  We walked around and looked at some different things, allowing him to sleep.
Tired boy.
After a while, we woke Austin up and let them go through a little farmer's thing.  They plant "crops", drive tractors, harvest, milk cows, and then get to pick a snack (chips, in the boys' case).  I'm pretty sure the tractor driving was their favorite.  Then we headed to the pet area and let Cameron see some dogs.
Isaac trying very hard to stay on the strait and narrow.

Doggie!
Finally, we took the boys on a few more rides, ate dinner, and then headed home.  It was a long day with a lot of walking (good for countering the various fried foods that we ate).  Everyone crashed on the way home, except Aaron (which would have truly caused us to crash as it was a 3 1/2 hour drive).
We decided not to buy this, unfortunately.

Isaac on Two Wheels (Classic "Dad Moment")

We hit a great milestone today.  After putting it off all summer, I worked with Isaac today on riding his bicycle without training wheels.  He had gotten so quick on his bike with training wheels, that I figured he would be able to pick it up pretty quick.  I thought it would take more than ten minutes to pick it up.  It may have taken eleven, at most.

First, I gave him a pep talk and got him started.

Next, I held on to the seat, and started jogging while he road rode. (Update: thanks to my cousin Nicole for her "kind" correction.)

Then I let go, and he started riding.  After a few times of me helping him stay balanced, he starts doing really well.  A few short minutes later, he is riding back and forth continually and I run behind him for moral support.  Finally, he rides up a small hill near our house all by himself and back down with  no problems while I sprint to keep up.

After maybe 30 minutes of total riding, he still has a little trouble turning (maybe a 60% success rate) and doesn't really know how to get started, as his seat is a little high (I may have to lower it to help him out).  He really did a great job and was rewarded with a treat.  Way to go Isaac!

What was really cute is that we found Austin pouting in the driveway and said that he was sad because Isaac was better than he is.  So, Austin said he wanted to try riding his bike without training wheels.  He did not do nearly as well as Isaac (being younger and on a smaller bike), but we were really proud that he was willing to try.  And had a few short period in which I could let go.

Obviously, Cameron did not do any bike riding, but he did climb into the trailer and wait for a ride.  Sadly, because of the time, that ride will have to wait until Monday.
