Pumpkin Patch

Kirk's mom drove back from Utah with me (I'll post about that later) and we spent a couple of days with her.  We went out to a little farm/pumpkin patch one morning.  Cade loved the tractor ride!  We got to pick out some pumpkins, climb on hay bales and see some animals too.  It was a gorgeous day and fun to get out.

Our family--Cade was too distracted by the tractor to look at the camera

either she's on a hill or I need to straighten out my camera :)

Cade at 26 months

  • The biggest news is that Cade is day-potty-trained!  He is doing great and has had only one accident in the last 7 days (I was putting Cami to bed and barely missed it).  He tells me when he has to go and gets stickers.  We tried nights for 5 nights.  One was dry but the rest were wet or soaked.  He was waking up crying at 5 am and wouldn't go back to sleep even with dry pajamas.  We'll try again in a few weeks.
  • Toilet story: One day Cade went poopy on the toilet and then wanted to stand up to go potty.  He was doing his business when he suddenly pushed and a piece of poo shot out of his bum and landed on the floor.  I thought it was hilarious, but couldn't laugh and told him how poopy goes in the toilet.
  • Cade asks if it is dark outside, because he knows that he goes to bed when it is dark.  Then we started talking about if the sun was up yet in the morning, because then it gets light.  He says "sun pop, mommy?" It took me a bit to figure out where sun pop came from.  It is in the Hungry Catapillar book.  The book says something like "the sun came up and pop, out the egg came the catapillar."
  • One of Cade's favorite things to do is play in his bed with Cami.  They jump around and Cami crawls on Cade and they both love it.

Cade bit holes through his binkies (he uses 2) early this month.  They don't work very well with holes.  We had a few nights with lots of crying before he fell asleep.  Currently, he is down to 1 binky but it is more of a tube than a binky because the top is all gone.  He likes to hold it in bed.
  • Cade loves to help me clean the bathroom.  He gets his own rag and scrubber and climbs in the shower and wipes everything down.

  • We were on a walk one day and Cade filled his pockets with pinecones and dry leaves.  I thought it was cute one time because he was walking down a path that had lots of rocks (gravel) on it.  All of a sudden he stopped and picked up a rock and said "rock, Mommy!"
  • We were going to Skype with my parents and as it was loading, Cade said over and over "Hi Grandpa, no hi Grandma."
  • Cade can do somersaults now.  The first one he did was on Skype and I didn't know he could do it.  Apparently my cousin Amber taught him.
  • Cade has successfully stayed in nursery 2 weeks now.  We left him screaming and came back to check 10 min later and he was calm.  He stayed happy the rest of the time.  Yay!
  • The lawn mowers came one last time last week.  I was surprised because they hadn't come for a few weeks.  They always park the trailer with the supplies in our cul-de-sac.  Cade and I went out and walked around so he could see the mowers up close while the guys were doing something else.  They had left a big pile of grass in the street.  Cade kept telling me "mess, Mommy."
  • Whenever he refers to something he wants to do or if it is time for something, Cade calls it a day.  Such as:  night-night day, eat day, walk day, outside day.
  • One day I told Cade no for some reason and he started crying and said "no see Mommy" because he was mad.  I told him to go sit in my room until he felt better and wanted to see me again.  He went and sat on the bed for a few minutes and came back happy.
Cade likes things to be in order and lines up our shoes by the door all of the time.

Fishing trip

Kirk wanted to go fishing this weekend and talked me into going with Cade and Cami.  I think Kirk is pretty brave taking us along.  He feels bad leaving all day on Saturday.  I know that he didn't get to fish as much as he would have liked, but the weather was perfect and we had a fun time.  I got a bunch of stuff ready on Friday.  I feel like we pack up our whole house to do some thing like this.  Cami slept in the car on the way to the river.  I gave her a bottle when we got there so she was good to go for a while.  We found a little gravel patch at the edge of the river and set up our stroller and blanket complete with plenty of toys and food.  We started out with Cade on Kirk's back and Cami in the Bjorn on me, both fishing.  I wish I had a picture of all 4 of us!

I caught a fish and then Cami was about done.  We went back to the blanket and played and made lunch.  Mostly she tried to crawl off the blanket and eat rocks and I pulled her back on and distracted her with cheerios.
After a while Cade was getting tired and Kirk brought him in and took him to the bathroom.  Cami took another nap in my arms and Kirk fished a bit more.  Then Kirk came in and fed Cami and I took Cade in the backpack until he got tired.  So I kept fishing and Kirk had both kids on the shore.  I thought it was pretty cute to watch Cade throw rocks in the river while Kirk (in his waders) fed Cami some applesauce.  We traded again and I took the kiddos back to the car and started cleaning up while Kirk explored one more stretch of river before calling it a day.

Both Cade and Cami slept pretty much the whole way home (an hour and a half).  It was a fun day.  Too much work for every week, but definitely worth it once in a while.

Just call me supermom.  I don't make homemade bread or have vinyl on my walls, but I can fish with a kid on my back (or front)!

Cami--7 months

Notice the sidewalk chalk she crawled through on her shirt!
Ignore the mismatching clothes though--it was laundry day :)
  • Cami is now 7 months old.  She is so fun to have around.  She is usually really happy--unless she is hungry or tired.  She is a mover and into lots of stuff too.
  • Cami can crawl across a room really quick.  She isn't totally on her hands and knees yet, but she is close.  Whenever she sees our back door open, she tries to escape--once with only a diaper on.  When she is hungry and I am making her a bottle, she crawls in the kitchen and whines and grabs my feet.
  • Cami is a very determined girl.  You can tell when she sees something she wants to go get and she won't stop until she has figured out how to get there.

  • She has so much energy!  Cami doesn't stop wiggling--ever.  unless she is asleep.  She is always diving out of my arms to grab something.  She does laps around our couch and explores behind chairs and under stools.
  • Cade loves to build roads and Cami loves to destroy roads.  We call her King Kong Cami.  When she sees Cade's road, she crawls over super fast and grabs it over and over again, throwing the pieces.  Cade and I yell "King Kong!"  and Cade laughs and usually destroys the rest of the road.  Luckily he doesn't get mad.

Get the road King Kong!

  • Cami loves cords of any kind, paper and shoes.  We have to keep these things far away from her!
  • Cami loves to jump on Cade.  She likes it when Cade pops his head up and says "boo" and if Cade looks at her and starts laughing, she will laugh too.
  • Cami drinks 4 6-oz bottles in a day and eats solids twice.  She has tried rice cereal, oatmeal, pears, banana, apples, carrots, beans, peas, squash, sweet potatoes, mashed potatoes, yogurt, graham crackers, cheerios and bread.  She loves to each cheerios and I give them to her while we eat our meals.  She is pretty good at getting food in her mouth.  I give her chunks of potato and peas and she can get those in pretty well too.

  • Cami goes to bed between 6:30 and 7 p.m. and usually wakes up between 6 and 6:30 (except for today when she woke up at 5!  I left her in bed and she talked to herself for an hour until I finally got up at 6)  She is still taking 3 naps.  Usually the first one is about 8:15 for an hour, the second one around 11:30 and a third but the time depends on how long the second one is.  Usually she'll sleep 1.5-2 hrs for the second one.
  • We weighed Cami a couple of weeks ago at Kirk's office at about 17 lbs 6 oz.  I haven't taken her to a doctor since her 4 month check in June because of insurance.  However, Cade was 23 lbs at his 6 month check, so she still has plenty of catching up to do.

Onsie to dress in 30 minutes

I was looking at one of Cami's dresses a while back and thought "I can make that from a onsie!" between moving and life, I haven't had time or the right materials until today.  It literally took me about 30 minutes to complete.  I even took pictures along the way so I can remember how easy it was!

Start with a onsie and a coordinating old t-shirt or piece of knit.  I used a shirt, which means I didn't have to sew a hem or side seams on the skirt.

Lay the onsie on top of the shirt with about an inch from the bottom of the onsie to the bottom of the shirt.  Cut through both layers about 2 inches below the bottom of the sleeve of the onsie (or where ever you want the skirt to start.

Sew a gathering stitch around the skirt (t-shirt) section.  I used sewed along the front and back separately because it makes gathering easier.  The shirt I used was a size small and the skirt isn't very full.  For a more full skirt, get a large or extra large t-shirt.  Keep an eye out at those Walmart clearance sales where shirts are like $2.
Pull threads and gather until the skirt is as wide as your onsie.  Turn the skirt right-side out and put the bottom of the onsie inside of it.  Turn the top of the onsie inside-out and place it upside down (so right sides are together) on top of the skirt.  Be sure that the front of the onsie top and bottoms line up.

Sew around all three layers.  I used a zigzag stitch because of the stretchy knit fabric.

Flip it right side out and you're done!  Stick it on your little girl with a pair of tights and you're ready to go!  I like this style of dress because you don't have to worry about an undershirt or tummies sticking out.
Not that it really matters that I added a skirt, because my baby lays like this all the time anyway.  Babies are so modest!
