December 21, 2015

I thought I did a post last Sunday, but I guess I missed it.  My brain is a little tired and fried these days!

Kirk had Thursday and Friday off last week.  He stayed home on Thursday and we got some stuff done around the house.  Thursday evening we went to Scott's for dinner and decorated gingerbread houses.  Scott was commenting on how chaotic it was around his house.  95% of the chaos came from my family.  It seemed pretty normal for us.

Friday was a beautiful day.  He went golfing in the morning while Cade was at preschool.  Cade and Kirk went back to the driving range in the afternoon.  Cade loves going and hitting balls.  I took Ellie back to the doctor to be weighed and she was up to 7 lbs.

Saturday was the DFK Christmas parties.  Kirk took Cade and Cami to the family party in the morning.  They went to the trampoline park and then had pizza for lunch.  They had a lot of fun.  I stayed with Ellie and enjoyed some peace and quiet.  That evening we had a baby sitter come over for Cade and Cami and went to the adult party.  It was a lot of fun too.  We took Ellie and everyone loved seeing her and commented on how small she is.  We got a Brad Paisley CD in the white elephant gift exchange and a TV from the other give away.  Kirk was really excited about the TV.  We are going to put it in the bonus room downstairs.

Sunday Kirk took the kids to church and then we hung out at home in the afternoon.  The weather has been pretty cold.  He also took the kids to see Christmas lights at night and they thought that was great.

Monday I got some laundry done, went to the bank and vacuumed.  I felt very productive.  Even just getting some little chores done is an accomplishment for me right now between feeding Ellie, feeding Cade and Cami, playing, doing dishes and taking care of myself.

Tuesday my mom flew in.  We got to go decorate gingerbread houses with some neighbors and then went and picked her up.  We have been busy since she got here.  Dar stopped by to say hi on Tuesday and then Ann Thompson came to visit too (my old RS president.)  My mom was a great help in playing with the kids and making dinner.

Wednesday Cade and Cami went came downstairs and were very concerned that Grandma had left.  I told them she was still in bed and they went and jumped on her.  We took Cade to preschool.  Mom, Cami, Ellie and I went to Target and got some Grandma Christmas presents for Cade and Cami.  We also went to Kohls to get a couple of presents there.  That evening we went to the dollar store and let Cade and Cami pick out presents for each other.  They had a hard time with the whole secret thing.  We came home and wrapped them right away, but Cami wanted to tell Cade what she picked and Cade wouldn't leave her alone while she was wrapping them.

Thursday was a snowy day.  We took a quick trip to Walmart in the morning to get tape and diapers for Ellie.  We wrapped some presents.  My mom and Cade had several light saber fights.  We made and decorated sugar cookies.  Mom, Cade and Cami all went out and played in the snow and built a snowman.

Friday was Cade's preschool party.  I dropped him off, went to Winco, picked up my mom and girls and went back to his school.  Cami, Cade and I had fun at the party and my mom had fun taking care of Ellie.  We got to listen to the kids sing their songs from the program that was cancelled.  That afternoon I went shopping at JCPenney and got some new earrings.  It was nice to have an hour out of the house by myself.  We were planning on going to the ward party, but the kids were tired, I was tired and it sounded better to just stay home.  We got some pizza and enjoyed being home.

Saturday Kirk was off, but ended up being pretty busy.  We watched part of the BYU-Utah bowl game but lost interest when BYU was down 35-0.  It ended up at 28-35.  We played lots of games with the kids.  Kirk and I went out the Stick and Stone that night and my mom took the kids to Dairy Queen.  They had a great time eating french fries and ice cream.

Sunday we all went to church and enjoyed the Christmas program.  Kirk and Cade played lot of star wars fights.  Cade's primary was singing at a nearby nursing home and I took him over there.  He really wanted to go and enjoyed singing with the rest of the kids.

Today is Monday.  We cleaned the bathrooms and picked up this morning.  We went to Costco and my mom took Cade and Cami to the store to get me a birthday present.

We have loved having my mom here.  She has put up with Cade being onery and obsessed with star wars.  She has loved playing with Cami and helped us a lot by doing dishes, making food and feeding and rocking Ellie.  She leaves tomorrow and then is driving out to Lindsey's on Saturday.  Lindsey is having her baby today.

One night we were talking for a minute before eating dinner.  Cami was hungry and yelled "Stop.  Pray!" and we looked at her and she started saying the prayer.  She has also loved doing puzzles and will sit on the floor and do the puzzles over and over.

Ellie is a cute little baby. She is slowly growing, still in newborn clothes and diapers.  She sleeps pretty well.  I get her up every 3 hours around the clock to make sure she is getting enough to eat.  At night, she goes right back to sleep.  She likes to cry and fuss in her sleep and trick us.  We are working on getting her to fall asleep on her own. She is pretty happy, but is only up for about an hour at a time.  She loves to be held.  If she is upset, we can wrap her up in blanket and hold her and she calms down right away.  Cade and Cami love to talk to her and sing her songs. We are doing better than I though we would be at 3 1/2 weeks.  I think that weeks 4-10 are the hardest, so we'll see what happens in the next little while.

Wednesday, December 9

This last week and a half has been a whirlwind.  Last week, Kirk worked all 5 days.  Cade was sick with the stomach flu on Wednesday.  We also woke up to 5 inches of snow that day and lots of icy roads.  His preschool was cancelled so he didn't even miss out.  We stayed home and watched movies.  We spent a lot of time at home throughout the week.  I have also received a lot of help!  Kara took the kids for a few hours one day and I slept.  Michelle Robertson helped out too.  We had meals brought in 3 nights from the Relief Society and a fourth by someone in our ward who just called me and asked if she could bring dinner!  Cade went to preschool and speech.

Ellie has been a good little baby.  She sleeps a lot.  Some nights she will sleep 4-6 hours at a time.  We realized that this was a problem on Monday of this week.  I took her in for her check up and she only weighed 6 lbs 5 ounces.  She started at 7 lbs 10 ounces and should have been at least that by 11 days old.  Dr. Patillo told me that we need to start giving her bottles in addition to breastfeeding and make sure she eats every 3 hours. I had been having trouble getting her to eat, but I didn't realize that it was that bad or that she had lost nearly 20% of her body weight!  I tried breastfeeding her and then giving her formula and then pumping for another bottle.  However, for whatever reason, I had very little milk.  when I tried pumping I got less than half an ounce.  She wouldn't nurse for more than a few minutes at a time without pulling off or falling asleep.  I ended up giving her 2 ounces of formula every 3 hours and we went back to the doctor yesterday (the day after her initial check up).  She had gained 3 ounces back.  I am happy that she is now going in the right direction.  I will continue to give her a bottle every 3 hours until she is up to the weight she should be--not sure what that is right now.  I have really struggled with deciding if she should get just formula or if I should keep fighting and try to get her to breastfeed.  I have chosen to go to all formula.  I need to know if my baby is getting enough food.  I don't have time to pump bottles every 2 hours to get more milk and fight to get her to nurse.  Cade and Cami need me too. I hate to think what would have happened if I had skipped this check up and she kept losing weight.  The doctor said that one reason she has been sleeping so much is that she doesn't have enough energy to be awake because she doesn't eat enough.  So, I am giving up nursing and going with the formula/bottles option.  I think it will be good for Ellie.

She is still a super cute baby.  She loves to be held and hugged.  In the last 2 days she has been easier to put to sleep (probably because she is not hungry!) and has been a little bit more alert.

Cade loves to do crafts and art projects.  We have been making small, simple ornaments each day that go with a story of Jesus and he loves that.  Cami loves princesses and dressing up.  We had a friend give us a small doll crib and Cami loves to wrap up her dolls in blankets and put them to bed.  She's been carrying the crib all over the house.

I am so glad that we have our house.  I love having space and having things put away.  I love the kids' play rooms and having a yard.  I love that Ellie has her own room and isn't sleeping in our closet or something.  I love looking out the window at the temple or the sunset and having a big garage to keep our truck and other things.  I am really happy with the new ward we ended up in and feel like the people here are really nice and welcoming.  I am excited to have a place that we can live in for a long time and just feel settled.

Kirk was home from the OR by 11:30 yesterday and it was great!  He helped me out and went grocery shopping with Cade and let me go to the Relief Society activity.  He is off Thursday and Friday this week too.  We are going to get our truck check done on Thursday and have dinner and decorate gingerbread houses with Scott and Kara.  Friday Kirk is planning on going fishing and then Saturday we have DFK trampoline family party and then adult dinner party.  My mom flies in on Tuesday of next week and we are looking forward to seeing her too.

November 29--Thanksgiving and Ellie

This week started out with good news at the doctor for me.  He said that my fluid levels had increased a bit and to come back for another check up on Wednesday.  I was so relieved, just knowing that Kirk was coming home that day and I wasn't having the baby.  He made it home about 9:00 that evening.

Tuesday was a good, relaxing but busy day.  We woke up to a little bit of snow and Cade and Cami had to go out and play!  We got the house picked up and vacuumed in the morning and did a bunch of laundry.  We went to Costco and came home and had lunch.  After quiet time, we went to Wal-mart and picked up a few more things.  Tom, Lisa and Connor drove up from Utah and got to our house about 6:30.  We invited Scott and Kara over too for dinner and we had fun together.  Jex is getting really big!

Wednesday morning Cade wanted Kirk to take him to preschool and then Kirk and Tom went yokes for drinks and snacks.  They did their manly thing of gun cleaning too.  I played with Cami and talked to Lisa.  I told her it was the first day in a while that I didn't have anything I really needed to get done.  I went with Lisa to the preschool so she could stay for the end of Cade's harvest party.  Then I picked up Kirk and we went to see the doctor.  They did an ultrasound again and said that the fluid had dropped.  Dr. Bahnmiller wanted to induce me.  He said that the baby was healthy that day and the placenta was doing ok, but if we waited a few more days we increased the chance of something going wrong or having a c-section.  I was glad that Kirk was there too.  We went home and grabbed some stuff and the family.  We wanted a good, big meal before heading to the hospital so we picked Costa Vida--always a winner!  Then we left the kids with Tom and Lisa and went to the hospital.

Everything went really smoothly.  I had really nice nurses and got checked in and everything.  They started pitocin about 4:00.  I slowly started to feel contractions, but nothing too serious.  By 7:00 they were getting more intense, but still not too bad.  I opted to get my epidural though, so I didn't have to feel much.  We brought 2 movies--McFarland USA and Inside Out and watched those.  By 10:00 I was 6 cm dialated and by 12:00 I was at a 9.  Kirk fell alseep about midnight.  I woke him up at 1:10 when I was getting ready to push and the doctor and nurses were bringing everything in.  Elizabeth Ann was born at 1:19 after 4 pushes.  We were excited to find out if we were having a boy or a girl.  Now having a girl seems so right.  The nurses got her cleaned up and weighed and everything (7 lb 10 oz and 19 inches long.)  Kinda a fun fact.  Ellie was 7-10, Cade was 8-11 and Cami was 9-12 birth weights.  I fed Ellie a bit and then finally everyone left and we got to sleep for a few hours.

Kirk went home about 7:30 that morning.  He brought everyone back so they could see Ellie.  I ate some jello and donut holes and didn't even get a stomach ache.  I love not being pregnant!  I spent the rest of the day at the hospital and watched some football.  Kirk came back for a couple of hours in the evening to keep me company.

Friday morning Ellie and I were ready to go home by about 11:30.  Kirk, Cade and Cami all came to get me.  We home and hung out the rest of the day.  We set up the Christmas tree and played.  Mostly I sat down and took care of Ellie.

Saturday Kirk and Lisa got some stuff hung up in the garage and we hung out at home.  Cami had a stomach bug and laid on the couch watching movies all day.  Cade and Kirk went on a bike ride.  Sunday I stayed home with Cami and Ellie and the rest of the group went to Scott's church for Jex's blessing.  Tom and Lisa got their stuff packed up so they could leave on Monday morning.  Ellie mostly just slept and ate.  She had a hard time sleeping in her bed for a couple of nights and would cry every 15 minutes or so.  She and I spent most of those nights in the recliner sleeping together and it worked well.  Sometimes she forgot to wake up and eat too.

I was so glad that they could be here.  I was a little concerned about my kids.  I know they got a bit stressed out, but it was all ok.  I know I get a little onery, and people get to put up with me too.  It was so nice to have someone here to help with Cade and Cami and meals and getting a few projects done too.
