Guess it's time for an update!!

A LOT has changed since our last post.

For starters- we moved! We were really sad to leave Fort Worth, but excited for the next step in Donnie's career. And that is one step closer to being finished with all the training! So it was a good move, and we're happy to be closer to my family.

Secondly- we moved... into a house! That has been exciting too. I'm constantly working on crafts or trying to organize and arrange things to make our house feel more homey. I think it's coming along, but we still have a ways to go. I can think of a TON of things I'd want to do (buy more furniture and decor things, hire painters [I really do not like painting!!], landscaping, etc.) if we had a TON of money. But for now.. I pace myself.

beginning construction..

But our biggest change since the last post has been that we are expecting babies! 2!! Our due date is in May so the countdown has begun. There will be one boy and one girl and we couldn't be happier. They're getting so big now (almost 3 pounds!) and moving around a LOT and it's been so fun to have the experience of carrying them. I've had a relatively easy pregnancy so far.. some nausea at the beginning, but nothing to really complain about. Let's hope this trend continues and they will be easy when they get out of my stomach too!

PROOF!! this is probably around 12 weeks, but you can easily see both of them. Now they move too much to get good images of them :)

a recent belly shot! My sweet sister-in-law threw a beautiful baby shower for me!

Year in Review

Time flies by when you are busy.  We both worked quite a bit this year, but that doesn't mean we couldn't find time to play!  Here is a sampling of things we have done the last 12 months.

Laura was excited about the art project she made in the kids area!

Loved this exhibit, reminded us of all the cool museums we have been to.

The spot were JFK was shot

Texas School Book Depository

Handel's Messiah at the Bass Hall

Matt, Andreia, her father Ted and us entered a Lord of the Rings Quiz.   We came in 4th place but after recalculating the scores, we realized they made an error which cost us the first place cash prize.  All we got was this flashing light.  Boo!!

Celebrating her birthday for the 2nd time!  (literally since she had already thought she reached the milestone we were celebrating until we recalculated her age)

Snow on Christmas Day in Texas!

Kelly and Arden playing with Laura

Laura ran a half marathon, no stopping!

We took a ski trip to Utah this winter.

Skiing

Dallas Museum of Art

Kimball Museum in Fort Worth (We absolutely love this museum and it's free!)

The most challenging puzzle we have done together (Klimt's "The Kiss")

Rugged!!

Bluebonnet Season

Taking in a Rangers game.
It ended up being a great year and we had a blast in Fort Worth.  We also enjoyed being so close to Donnie's family and some of our best friends.  We have now moved to Austin as Donnie begins the last phase of this training (allegedly).  Hopefully we will post again before another year passes us by.

Graduation

A few weeks ago Donnie graduated from medical school! It was a day we eagerly anticipated for the last four years-- the day he would officially become a Doctor! It was a pretty exciting day (wait.. graduations aren't exciting... maybe that's not the right adjective..), but I couldn't help my eyes from tearing up a couple times as I listened to the opening speeches. They reminded me that it truly is a great accomplishment to graduate medical school- one that takes a tremendous amount of effort and devotion to excellence. Additionally, Donnie's class experienced the devastating Hurricane Ike (less than two weeks after starting classes) which caused the school and hospital to shut down for months with radical rearrangements to classes (i.e. the cadaver lab didn't survive the hurricane), schedules and clinical experiences. But despite the rocky start and any related unforeseeable hardships, they survived. And thrived even. I am so proud of the UTMB 2012 School of Medicine Graduates!

And I am especially proud of Donnie. Over the last four years I've witnessed firsthand his strong work ethic, persistence and dedication. He is smart, but he is also hardworking; at graduation he received many awards, recognitions and scholarships due to his efforts. That's what was exciting-- to finally celebrate everything he's been working towards.

Some of Donnie's closest med school buddies.. Congratulations guys!!
Walking back to his seat after receiving his diploma.
Baby Charlotte ate a lot of sand during her first trip to the beach! Thanks for supporting your Uncle Donnie!!
These little guys took their first ferry ride-- and saw A LOT of seagulls! Thanks for making the trip and celebrating with us!
I love you Donnie and couldn't be more proud!

Our Favorite Things About Europe

Each day on our trip was truly an adventure. 2 days in a new city goes by quick so we had to plan well and be as efficient as possible. That means taking advantage of Europe's excellent public transportation.  In fact, we noted that on one busy day we had taken a ride on a train, tram, subway, bus, cable car, boat, and airplane!  We feel that we saw and visited the majority of places we wanted but there are always things you wish you knew beforehand (ie Stockholm is one of the few major cities you can ride a hot air balloon over). Here we list some of our favorite things about our trip and one picture from each city. If these pictures only whet your appetite, we have links to each city we visited with many pictures. That way, you can look through a city you might be interested in visiting one day or peruse through the entire trip.  Of course, if you have any questions, we would love to answer them.  Just beware, we might talk your head off!

Favorites:

Scotland- Donnie became quite fascinated with red pants. They seem to be the blue jeans there and are an interesting look.  Maybe one day we will return and he will own a pair of his own.

England- Nothing will ever erase the memory of driving on the left side of the road. Two near wrecks (one literally seconds after pulling out of the rental car lot), getting lost, and not understanding many of the road signs made for a memorable day. Laura's constant repetition of "stay left, stay left, stay left" was also helpful. Perhaps the funniest moment was ending up in the center of Bath (a much bigger city than we were expecting) which is full of unmarked one-way lanes, narrow roads, and mindless pedestrians. We literally just started following the car in front of us and hoped they would lead us out of the busy section (they did!).

Netherlands- The tulip gardens were amazing. Warning: You may experience a flower overload if you are thinking of looking through that album.

Denmark- Fredricksborg Castle. Having visited many amazing castles/palaces on our trip, this castle truly stood out.

Norway- The easy answer is a boat ride through the fjords. But the shock of seeing the high prices was laughable. Who knew Norway's currency was doing so well? To give you a fair comparison, we looked at a Burger King and if you bought 2 regular sized combo meals of their largest burger, the price would be $43. Add 1 shake and you just spent over $50 for two people at Burger King!! The price of a 250 ml Sprite with no refills was $6 at our restaurant. Yikes!

Sweden- Fun to see how the people love the sun there. They flock to the water, piers, and parks just to bask in the warmth of the sun.

Germany- Fun to see the history on display at Checkpoint Charlie. It was sad how little we knew about German history. Also, the chocolates, currywurst, and kebaps aren't bad either.

Prague- The Astronomical Clock Tower. It is interesting to see the clock mark the passing of the hour but it was more fun to see the large crowds that gathered there before the show started.

Austria- The fashion sense of this country is amazing. Everyone dresses like they just walked out of a magazine shoot. We must have looked like slobs to the locals. Even the children have impeccable taste.

Switzerland- The views. Whether on our hike on Mt Uetliburg or our excursion to Lucerne and Mt Titlis, each time you turn the corner, the view becomes more amazing. The camera was used a lot during those 2 days.

Paris- Yeah, there may be taller towers or older towers or towers that are more architecturally impressive, but it is hard to beat being on or near the Eiffel Tower. It truly is a magical place.
Edinburgh Castle in the Distance
Stonehenge
So many tulips!!!!
The original Christus statue
Homes on the fjord
A park in Stockholm
Yes, it really was that good!!
Zombie march!!!
At entrance in Kunsthistorisches Museum in Vienna
Near top of Mt Titlis in Switzerland
Getting closer to the top!!

We posted our pictures to photobucket.  There are pictures and videos in each album.  It is probably easiest to view in a slide show but the program can be a little clunky (it will sometimes repeat photos you just saw or not go in order) but it works most the time.  The only problem is it doesn't display videos, so you have to search those out individually.  Near the top of the page is information on how many pictures and videos are in each album.  Without further adieu-

EUROPE!!

Donnie finished school early which gave us a couple of months of free time. We figured we would probably not have that kind of time off until retirement and decided to take a major vacation. We had always dreamed of going to Europe and figured why not now. We loved our trip and had many great experiences. During the trip, each time we visited a new place it became our favorite city. We visited 11 countries during our time there, 2 nights in each city except London and Paris where we spent 3. Below is a map of the cities we visited and the order we saw them, starting in Scotland. Further below are posts done while we were there and blogging with our iphones. Hopefully in a couple of weeks we will have a post with some of our favorite pictures and moments (as well as a link to a ton of photos for anyone interested).

Does this look like a fairy tale to you??
Sledded and tubed in the Swiss Alps!
Took quite a few cable cars to get to where we were going.
Seriously, a fairy tale setting.
