Very Merry

It really doesn't get much cuter than this.

Okay. Maybe it does.

Merry Christmas from the Salter family!

Unconditional

Even though they wear me out

I love them anyway

And this one too

All 17 pounds 10 ounces, 27 inches of him. Even with his first ear infection discovered at his 6 month well child check-up last week. Despite the temporary sleep disruptions. I love them. And I think they love me, even though they wear me out.

Circle City Christmas

When your dad works in the car business, you get winter hats with a BMW logo on them. She didn't seem to mind. I'm sure she was thankful her ears weren't freezing. (side note: do you call them "toboggans"? we used to have this discussion with friends, who weren't from the south, that they were not toboggans because toboggans were sleds, and you certainly don't wear a "sled" on your head.)

A little break from swinging to look for the birds

Saturday night my Dad's family came over for a lot of food, a lot of presents, and a lot of chaos. We were missing a few cousins and spouses, but all nine great-grandchildren were there. A highlight for me was this sweet thing. Her mommy was at a wedding, but she and her brother came with their grandparents (my uncle and aunt). Her mommy and I look similar and it was obvious she thought so too. I got some sweet loving from her!

This is just classic. Trying to get nine children, most of whom are under 5, to sit still for 3 seconds, while holding little babies, and see if we can get even half of them to look normal. You see Elle was doing her part to make sure Reese was looking at the camera. My grandmother looks pretty thrilled about the photo shoot too.

"A present for me? How did you know I love musical fish?"

Opening presents the next morning with Dad and Sandi

Trying to get a picture of the three of them

Thomas was a hit!

I don't know if you can see it in the picture, but my husband is currently wearing two car key rings as a wedding band (another perk of working in the car business--all the key rings you need!). Why in the world would he do that, you ask? Well, he says his ring is too small. But now that I think about it, I haven't seen his actual ring in awhile. Perhaps this Christmas every kiss will begin with "K" in the Salter house. And on that note, I hope you are singing the Kay Jewelers commercial in your head.

Tricks

Reese's new trick

His other new trick was sleeping from 7:30 last night until 7 AM this morning without a night cap. And although I'd like to think this will be the new normal, there are a few teeth looming on the horizon. Tomorrow marks the big half-birthday followed by his check-up on Thursday. It has been a fun-filled fast six months!

We spent this past weekend in Dothan to celebrate Christmas with my Dad and his family, got to see some great old friends and meet a special, somewhat famous, new one. Hope to post some pictures of our trip tomorrow. Tonight will be an 8:30 bedtime for me!

Identity Crisis

We're having a bit of an identity crisis around here. He's not sure if he wants to be Cinderella, Mickey Mouse, or a carpenter (notice the tape measure in hand). If you happen to be going through your closets, boxes and bins of toys in an effort to make room for the surge of Christmas and you happen to come across any manly dress-up clothes that your manly men can't fit in anymore, I'll be glad to take them off your hands. We're talking police, knights, soldiers, cowboys, firemen, carpenters, superheros, etc. Anything that doesn't sparkle, contain tulle or come in pastel. The poor boy just doesn't have any other options in the dress-up bin.

Should I?

I'm coming back soon, I think!

Stay Tuned

I'm going to take a little break from blogging. I love to do this and wish I could write just about every day. But then, life happens and I can't always get to the writing and uploading photos. And then I feel bad. I'm going to take the month of November to come up with a better plan for managing all that running a household of five involves as well as making time to enjoy my family and life. I want to be more proactive in training and raising my kids instead of just going through the motions and making it through the day. I also would like to spend time with the Lord again. And I'm afraid all of this means I have to start getting up really early. So, I'll see you again sometime after Thanksgiving. We do have a fun-filled month ahead: Disney on Ice, visits from grandparents and to grandparents, Thanksgiving week at Callaway Gardens with my mom's family to name a few. And I have high expectations after last year's crazy Thanksgiving. At least I know there won't be any pregnancy-related nausea and vomiting.

Before I sign off, here are a few pictures from last Sunday's trip to Oak Mountain. Grady cannot get enough of the farm and animals. It was beautiful weather. We picniced by one of the lakes and had an awesome time together. And we each brought some germs home with us. This week's trip to the pediatrician was a diagnosis of croup for Grady. My diagnosis is that we all have had some form of it this week. We are hanging in there though, and counting our blessings because they are many!

Four Months

We took our weekly trip to the pediatrician's office last Thursday for Reese's four month check-up. Elle and Grady were happy to tag along and receive their flu shots. Thankfully, Daddy was able to tag along as well and enjoy the happiness. Reese was a champ and is growing perfectly. We are still dealing with a sometimes goopy, sometimes teary eye that I'm confident will result in his trip to Children's South Outpatient Surgery Center one day. But maybe not. There's still time for it to resolve.

Big boy weighed in at 15 lbs 8 oz and was 25 1/2 inches long. He is rolling from stomach to back. He can push up on his arms pretty well. From his back, he can only manuver his 15+ pound self over to his side and then he smiles. I'm sure it won't be long until he makes it all the way over. The drool faucet has been turned on and we have to have a bib on at all times. He is smiling, talking and giggling a lot. I am enjoying him so much. I know people say it all the time, but the more you have, the more you are able to just relax and enjoy them. I am so thankful.

And Elle and Grady really do love him. Although Grady did ask me to "lay him in the sandbox" last week. I was holding Reese and Grady wanted me to play pitch with him. I explained that I couldn't because I could hurt Reese with the bat or ball. And that was his solution: put him in the sandbox and then you can play with me!

Free Fun

We had some fun coloring our own pictures yesterday. That is, until the printer crashed. I thought I would pass along this fun, free activity with hopes you will get a little more than three pictures out of the deal. Go here and use code PR24QCHT and get 24 hours to print. Thanks to Parents magazine for the info.

Craziness

My friend Hillary asked me to take part in her first ever Linky Hosted Event and talk about something "crazy". I originally planned to write about this craziness going on the Salter household.

But then, I happened upon even more craziness last night. There is a show on TLC, and I promise I am not making this up, called I Didn't Know I was Pregnant. Are you serious? These women went in to labor and had no idea what was going on. And both of them had two older children. I really cannot understand how this is possible. I can understand a few months, maybe even 4 or 5 months. But can you honestly go nine months and not know there is a baby in there? Let me throw a little piece of advice out there for you: If you are a woman of child-bearing age, all your child-bearing equipment is intact, you are involved in the activity that leads to child-bearing, and you are experiencing some unexplained symptoms for a few months, TAKE A PREGNANCY TEST. You just might be pregnant. If you only get one line, then cross that condition off your list. I can't even write any more about it because it is just too ridiculous.

So, anyway, back to the "normal" craziness. Grady has started using the potty. Or trying. He went Sunday night in the little potty and was so excited. He and Elle got in the bath tub and we celebrated with a few chocolate chips. Then he pooped in the tub.

Yesterday he went about 5 times. Two times in the potty. Two times in front of the potty. And one time he brought the little insert in to the den to show me and poured it out on the way back to the bathroom.

But we're proud of him and he's proud too. I don't have any big boy underwear yet. Instead, there is a little boy with just a shirt on running around my house. I am letting him call the shots on this process, but any advice on potty training sons is welcome! Happy Crazy Wednesday to you!

Grand Ole Pumpkin Patch

Grady grabbed the first one he came to and claimed it as the biggest.

Elle didn't understand the "you only get to pick one" rule.

"Mae" was with us for the weekend. She had just a little bit of fun. And we could be man on man at the patch. Although we did lose Grady for a few seconds.

I thought this was sweet. Grady was leaning in to snuggle with Mommy. Steven later told me he was trying to see something but couldn't because my shoulder was in the way.

He took Blossom for a little spin around the pony ring.

Elle and Mae took a ride on the Twactor Train. Grady refused to ride because he couldn't ride in the front with the man driving the twactor. But all in all, one spectacular afternoon at the farm.

All you blog whizzes out there

Could someone please tell me how I make it so I know when people post without having to click on their sites every time? A lot of you have those little sidebar things that show how long it's been since people posted. I would like to have that same thing. Please share your technological wisdom with me. I'm single-parenting it for almost two days while my dear hubs is in Atlanta at a car auction and I'm too tired to think and read and figure it out myself. Help a sister out, please.

All is well

The surgery was a success. Elle was a wonderful patient. God's peace was evident. She was not anxious for a second. No crying. All smiles. It was time.

She did a little coloring and sign making before hand.

We walked down to the double doors with a big clown on it. She laughed, took the nurse's hand and slipped in to surgery land. She even got to pick out what flavor the sleepy gas was. Even though Dr. Pepper was a flavor, she chose orange.
And then, a mere 20 minutes later, the doctor was in the room telling me she did great and that those were some massive tonsils (really?) and adenoids. I blinked again and she was back.

Thank you for all your prayers. Like I said, God's peace was evident. It could not have gone any better. We are drinking the Lortab like water around here. Just Elle really, although I've thought about taking a swig. To recovery, of course.

It's On

At least we hope.
Tomorrow morning at 6:30 AM.
Tonsillectomy and adenoidectomy.
She's ready.
Mommy and Daddy are ready.
Pray it happens.

Hello again.

Surprise! I am still here. Maybe you are as happy to hear from me as Reese usually is.

I left you just a few days before we went to Carillon Beach for Labor Day week.

And we had the entire beach to ourselves for a week.

Unfortunately, I was too busy enjoying myself and my family that I have very few pictures of our time. Not one of the five of us together. Or any of the multitude of family members that joined us at various times over the week. You will just have to trust that it was absolutely wonderful.

We did have to spend the first night in a different place because the air conditioning wasn't working at our house. The thermostat read 99 degrees. But upstairs, it was only 91 degrees. I kid you not.

My husband did manage to get us two free nights for our heat strokes/trouble. My favorite quote as he was talking with the property manager: "I don't know how much money you make. But I don't make a lot and we had to work really hard to save to come down here for the week." And we'd like to think it paid for air conditioning...

I had a naked photo shoot with Reese. He was naked. I had my clothes on.

He got a little tired of it. Or maybe he just wanted some clothes.

We threw a WALL-E party for Elle. She finally stopped sucking her thumb and this was the motivation for it all. If I'd only known the power of WALL-E a few months ago. Oh well. All in good time.

We are so proud of her. And she is so proud of herself.

One thumb sucker down, one to go. And yes, he is "feeding" Mickey. At least he got the Boppy first so he could be comfortable.

For any of you wondering, Elle is scheduled for surgery on Monday. But, she is sick again so we will probably be postponing again. I'm taking her to the pediatrician tomorrow morning. I really should get frequent flyers miles from my pediatrician's office. I would be racking up.

I love preschool

We tried to move Elle's surgery up. Unfortunately, the cold she was recovering from had her lungs in a mess. The anesthesiologist would not go ahead with the procedure. This was after we had planned, prepared, grocery shopped for all the right foods, arranged childcare and spent 2 hours at Children's on Monday morning. It was disappointing to say the least, but we trust it was for the best and the Lord wants us to wait for His timing. But this is how her throat looks:

You can see why we want this done as soon as possible.

The surgery nurse called yesterday. Apparently, the anesthesia department won't allow you to try again for another four weeks if someone has unclear lungs. A new date of September 28th is scheduled. I just hope Elle will be 100% healthy so we can get those monsters out of her throat.
Since she didn't have surgery, she got to go to school today. Can I get a Hallelujah from the chorus! Grady also started Mother's Day Out. Elle will be going Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays. Grady will be joining her on Wednesdays. I have forgotten how easy it is with only an 11 week old to take care of. It has been a wonderful break from the norm. And it will make me a much better mommy. Happy Wonderful Wednesday!

One way to discipline

We are in the process of making our upstairs "bonus room" Elle's bedroom. After much consideration and deliberation, we decided in favor of Elle and Grady not sharing a room for now. Yesterday, Steven and I were upstairs rearranging, organizing, rearranging, straightening, moving furniture, etc. I'm not even sure what it was, but Elle did something that required discipline. Steven turns to her and in his stern, fatherly-disciplinarian voice says, "Elle, go to your room." She turns to head down the stairs, and I said, "Well, this is her room." We both bust out laughing. Elle was still crying, unsure of what was so funny. We all had a good laugh and forgot the reason she was supposed to go to her room in the first place.

Firsts

Grady got his first big boy haircut Saturday. I thought it might be a scream fest. Steven said all it took was a sucker and he sat still the entire time.
The before shot:

Why is he always eating at the table in every picture?

And after:

Reese got submerged for his first big baby bath Saturday. Yes, I have just been giving him sponge baths since birth. He's not dirty and the other two didn't like the baby tub until about two months anyway. He was so relaxed the whole time. (I know that doesn't look like a relaxed face. You'll just have to trust me on this one.)

Elle's first will be September 21st. She is having her tonsils and adenoids removed. I wish it were tomorrow. Her tonsils have always been what the doctor called "generous". She had strep throat this summer and now they are just huge. The ENT called them "kissing tonsils". There is almost zero space in the back of her throat. She is snoring like crazy, waking up like crazy. She can barely swallow and her voice sounds like her mouth is full of cotton. I cannot wait to have this done. I think she will be a much happier, well rested, and healthier little girl.
