My First's First Day of First

My head strong, ninja fighting, Lego engineering, pool swimming, mess making, popsicle eating, joke telling, bike riding, bedtime snuggling, always negotiating, towheaded first born is now a first grader!

Yesterday morning, as if on cue, Brock pulled the covers up over his head and stubbornly declared that he didn't want to go to school. He was simply too tired. This, coming from my son who was up at 6:30 a.m. all summer! However, the promise of waffles was enough to convince him to roll out from under his comforter and flash his silly grin.
"Waffles?"
His eyes were wide and slightly wild with glee as he happily shucked off the blankets and bounded from his bed. He has a thing for waffles.

Brock was dressed and ready to take on first grade much earlier than he needed to be, so we headed out front for the customary first day of school pictures.

"Mom, take a picture of my cool Tony Hawk backpack!"

Truthfully, Brock had NO idea who Tony Hawk even was when we were shopping for the perfect backpack at Kohls; he chose the backpack because it was camo.
It was cool before. However, when Clarke told Brock that Tony Hawk is a famous skateboarder, the backpack went from cool to unequivocally amazing. And therefore picture worthy.

Even though many children ride their bikes to the charter school every day, it is apparently not "done" on the first day of school. Lines of cars driven by moms is what is "done" on the first day of school. Brock was the ONLY one who rode his bike that day. The ONLY kid in the entire school to don a bike helmet and peddle their way to class. Brock wasn't at all phased by this, however. It probably had something to do with his fierce new bike helmet.

Welcome to First Grade kiddo!

He described his first day as "fun." He met two new friends. He learned to say hello and goodbye in Spanish. And he got to play basketball at recess.
The curriculum is far more challenging and the rules of the school unquestionably more strict. I think the charter school will be a good fit for my first grader!

7 1/2 Months...

SEVEN MONTHS OLD
This age is so much fun!

We are having such a great time raising our daughter.
And for the most part, she seems to be a happy girl...

Hello!

She loves table food and her sippy cups.
"No, you may not have my banana, mom."

We have begun the bittersweet process of weaning and Cami is learning to tolerate bottles.
Still, she loves to nurse so it's a battle of wits come bedtime.

Who knew such a round, little thing was so flexible? Perhaps I'll be one of those proud moms in the audience at the Olympics, cheering on my little gymnast.

Camryn is getting so big that she has easily outgrown many of her baby toys, like her cradle swing...
(it's on the "to do" list for take-down this weekend. sniff. sniff.)

Clarke jokes that Camryn is his "favorite" child.
At least, I think he is joking.

Clarke: "Hey honey, I want to take her for a ride."
Me: "Um, no."
(they look conspiratorial, don't they?)

Have you ever heard the song "Father and Daughter" by Paul Simon?
Love it!

Darling girl, quit growing up so fast! Cami recently learned to roll and rarely spends more than a few moments in the same spot--always on the move, that one.

Camryn's new trick is rocking back and forth...on her knees!
Today, I found her halfway across the floor, but she had performed a series of rolls to get there.
Still no real crawling. Whew!

We LOVE this face so so so much!

Camryn is healthy, happy, smart, gorgeous and best of all, OURS!

Announcement: I'm Completely Booked!

Admittedly, these last four or five months have been frustrating. I'm so blessedly busy with work that I've been struggling to keep up in other aspects of my world, namely my children. And when it comes to choosing between my clients and my kids, my kids will win every single time. Balancing a business and a family was much easier when it was just Brock, but now that Camryn, my high-maintenance diva, has entered the picture, life as been thrown off balance. I simply don't have time for anything anymore and client work hangs over me like a guilty, dark cloud whenever I'm spending time doing something other than shooting, editing and building my business.

This is why my kids have booked me for the remainder of 2012!

I've already announced this on my photoblog and my website.
In January, I'll reevaluate if I want to continue with my business or take a few years off.

In the meantime, I will take a plethora of pictures of my favorite clients: Brock and Camryn,
without the stress of deadlines.
In addition, I'll also be available for family's family pictures (so don't be shy about asking!).

And since not post is complete without a picture...
