Rex on the Record
Here are some of Rex's recent quotes:
(walking into the kitchen, sniffing) "Hmm. . . it smells stinkery in here."
***
Dad: "We're going to be sending presents to soldiers, who are stuck in a place that's really lonely, hot and sandy."
Rex: "Bethlehem?"
***
Pointing to a sore on Lucy's toe: "Dad, I think Lucy's toe is going bad."
***
"Dad, whenever Lucy wakes up before me, her hair looks really cute."
***
"Mom, sometimes I feel like I'm in love with (cousin) Mallory's sister."
***
Dad: "Rex, you've given primary talks before. Why didn't you dare to give your talk today?"
Rex: "I didn't want to be in front of all of those people, distracting them."
***
Lucy has a cute little pair of earmuffs. Rex says: "Dad, Lucy needs to put on her earwigs." Later, Lucy says "Dad, put on my muffins!"
***
A prayer by Rex, on the night cousin Nate came to stay over:
"Heavenly Father, thank you for this day. Thank you that Nate can come and have a sleep over. And please bless Nate that he won't cry and just stare out the back door. Please bless him to not be sad. And thank you that we have Christmas. And Christmas isn't just about Santa, it's about Jesus. And when you get up in the morning to open presents, you have to get your parents first."
***
After Nate went home, I said to Macy "Well, it was really nice to have Nate here."
From the corner across the room, Rex said "Yeah, he's a cute guy."
(Rex is surprisingly good at snowboarding on his sled down the hill, so here are a few clips of that)
***
Rex: "Dad, I like the Cougars better than the Jazz."
Dad: "Really? Why?"
Rex: "Because the Cougars can beat the Utes, but the Jazz can't beat the Spurs"
***
Greeting me as I came in the door: "Hey Bro!"
***
Rex: "Spiderman, Spiderman, does whatever a spider can. Is he tough? Listen bud, he's got real active blood."
***
Rex was running around and around the kitchen table at top speed, uninterrupted for ten minutes. Dad comes in: "What are you doing?"
Rex: "Practicing to get faster than Anna."

Nativities and other goings ons
The Christmas season is such a busy time with so much going on. From holiday parties, Christmas shopping, decorating, putting together neighborhood gifts, and then all the things we love attending such as the Temple Square lights, the Mormon Tabernacle choir concert (this year a hit with the King Singers there....Ryan was on cloud 9), the BYU/Michigan State game with the Beans. One of the our most cherished traditions is the outdoor Nativity put on by our Stake and a couple of other churches. This year Ryan and I, and of course baby Molly, were the Holy Family. Rex is also pictured below in the children's nativity put on by our primary. Here are some photos of what we have been up to this season. At the Energy Solutions Center to see BYU vs. Michigan State. Thanks to the Beans we had 2nd Row seats!!!

Grandma JoLynn, Anna , Abby , and Nate who came to see Baby Molly as Baby Jesus (shhhh, she is really a baby girl).

Ensembles
From the above we may deduce two things: She has very strong ideas about what she wants to wear (though she changes those ideas approximately five times a day); and she's anything but shy about her choices.
UPDATE: Davis has astutely alerted me to a fascinating resemblance based on the top photo. Yeah, it's really weird, but also kind of hard to argue with:
UPDATE II: I felt it just bore mentioning that this post is the SIXTH in a row on this blog written by Ryan, possibly the most prolific male family blogger ever to have graced the Interwebs. Hopefully there will be someone else willing to pick up some of the slack around here?

Everybody's Favorite Baby
For the last month or two, I've been telling Macy that I think Molly is our most interactive, engaging baby. You just have to look at her to get a big huge smile, and she loves to laugh any time someone pays her any attention. Problem is, she only does it when you're sitting alone with her, so there haven't been a lot of chances to get it on camera. I did get this the other day though:
We are very much enjoying dear little Molly. I have actually been really surprised how much the kids are into her. They just love being around her, and are very good to her, when they're not trying to use her baby swing themselves. Despite being very engaging, Molly's also been a bit less mellow than the others, but her smiles and laughs and influence on Rex and Lucy have made the extra work more than worth it.

I Could Have Danced All . . . One and a Half Minutes
It was a historic day for our family. We had our first dance recital. The recital wasn't the family's, just Lucy's, but it was the first time we had one to go to. Lucy was darling, as you might expect. It may surprise you to know that you can view below the footage of her entire time on stage. Yes, the recital took about an hour long, and she was up there for roughly ninety seconds. No, I'm not saying she's ready to be the star or anything, just that, well, isn't time for us to put our heads together and decide to end to dance recitals forever?
Nothing against darling three year olds tapping their feet in leotards and tutus. But when you go see your kid at a soccer game, at least you'll be watching your kid most of the time. Not so with dance recitals, where each kid gets what amounts to a cameo, and each parents gets to watch hundreds of other kids make their cameos. Anyway, I should stop ranting and get out of the way of Lucy's big day. Just hoping that her future big days will be more about, say, Lacrosse.
Regardless, Lucy is a beautiful dancer, and she had a lot of fun up on the stage, always hip to hip with her best friend Jane (pictured in the videos in pink with the long tutu).
Here's Lucy spinning around with Jane. For some reason they gravitated to the back of the stage on this one, but you can still see them enjoying themselves:

In between acts:
The big finale- "Little Suzy Snowflake":
And a dramatic pirhoulinesouffle move at the end of the show:

Welcome to Belle Adrienne Thompson
My little sister Eliza Thompson had a beautiful little girl on Thursday. We were told that children couldn't go into the maternity unit, but we headed down to see the baby anyway, prepping the kids that they'd have to wait in the waiting room while Macy and I took turns visiting Eliza and the baby.
So it was a nice surprise when we got there to find out that Rex, Lucy and Molly were more than welcome to come back and meet their new cousin. We spent some nice time with both Eliza and Belle, and everyone loved seeing and touching and talking to this beautiful new little baby, as well as stroking her unearthly soft hair. Belle is beautiful, and we're so excited to have her in the family. Molly didn't pay much attention to her, but we expect those two to be fast friends someday.
Congratulations to Liza, Josh, and Abe, and welcome to Belle!

Enchanted (and Lessons Learned)

Yesterday, as part of my birthday festivities, we took the kids to see Enchanted. Despite our hesitancy about taking Molly to a movie, it turned out really well, the kids enjoyed themselves, and Macy and I never even had to leave our seats. (Note: if you don't want to know how it ends, skip the fourth paragraph).
It's never a sure bet taking little kids to a live-action show, given the twin risks of boredom and inappropriate content, but Enchanted mostly passed both tests. Lucy ended up a bit bored in the middle (starting, incidentally, right around the time the lead admitted that she wasn't yet a real princess, I believe). Also, if you've heard any gripes about some barely subtle consumerist messages, you heard right. But overall it's a pretty good flick.
Giselle, an animated maiden who embodies everything the classic Disney Princess stands for (fawning romantic fantasies, scores of loving animal companions, unalloyed feminine perfection, and a set of pipes straight out of Broadway) ends up in live action New York City, with predictable, but endearingly quirky results. Fortunately, the movie skips a lot of the fish-out-of-water tropes (she just knows how to work the shower and the dishwasher, rather than spending time comically oohing over technology). There's still plenty of boring culture conflict, seen mostly in the hard bitten New Yorkers who are so disgusted at the naive fantasy transplants. But this premise sets up one of the movie's big strengths, which is Giselle's ability to live by fairyland rules while in the real world. The animals still come help her clean and sew, and people still know how to join in on her big musical set pieces. That was a great idea, and works really well.
The ending is weak, but the acting is really great, so it's worth seeing if you have any kids lying around that need to be dusted off for an outing. Just be forewarned that there are messages in this movie that your kids will perceive. Both Rex and Lucy learned lessons from this movie, one good and one bad. As you might have guessed for a self-aware and post-modernly droll movie, every effort is made to put Giselle on par with the males in her life, in terms of self-defense and actualization (and yes, I do think that's a good thing, although sometimes these movies seem to wear that a bit more like a marketing device than a nonchalant part of the plot). {SPOILER} To that end, the movie culminates with Giselle defeating the evil queen and saving her prince. {END SPOILER}. This did not go unnoticed. As we walked out of the theater, Rex turned and said "Wow, I didn't know a princess could kill a dragon!" Macy and I smiled to see both Rex's initial notion, and that he was reconsidering it.
We did not smile at Lucy's response to Giselle. For all her perfection, Giselle is missing one virtue: Modesty. Her wardrobe in the climactic scene was a pretty revealing little strapless number more at home in New York than in fairy tale land. Macy and I discussed that a little bit on the way home, noting that Disney was trying hard to look innocent, but modesty is apparently not important enough to parents anymore for Disney to make much fuss about it. Soon after we got home, some nearby families came over with their kids for my birthday party, and Lucy ended up playing dressups with her best friend Jane. Sure enough, Lucy ended up in her frilly mermaid dress, only instead of putting on the sleeves as usual, she left them hanging at her sides, with the dress neckline staying at her armpits. It was our Lucy's first strapless gown. We tried to ignore it for a minute, but it became so painful to think how quickly she had integrated that message and was now acting it out, that we had to force her to put the sleeves on and cover up. I sure hope that's the last battle we have on that issue, but my gut tells me it's not.

Happy 32nd Birthday Ryan!!
There is alot of amazing things I could say about my dear husband Ryan. He is such a uniquely gifted person, but I thought it might be fun to name some things about him alot of people may not know.2. He can write you a poem , pretty much on the spot
5. He takes a really good photo
6. He loves to chat. I love when I come home from a girl night, Young Womens, or whatever he wants to hear all the ins and outs of what is going on with everyone, what we talked about , etc. You know, loves to break it down.
7. He is a really good teacher. In this I mean, whenever he is with our children he always trys to have a life lesson of somesort in their convos, or with whatever they are doing.
8. He loves Pop Culture. He reads so much during the day that he knows it all about music, movies, politics, even fashion. He is way up on what is going on in the world, and so I love getting my little tid bits of info from Ryan.
9. He looooves Chocolate (also, cheetos and choc. milk,...hopefully not together)
10. He is constantly trying to improve himself. I think that may be one of his main values in life, and I have learned that from him.
Rex says he loves his dad because: He is funny and he wrestles with him.

The Holiday Craziness has begun
I can't believe we are in the thick of it around here. All the houses are starting to be lit up, and it finally snowed!! It is beautiful out there, and while Rex was at preschool this morning Lucy had to head out at 9am. I watched her out the window for awhile while she looked for stuff to do by herself. I know if Rex were out there with her he would have plenty of ideas, but I love watching her little mind work. She first just made a round walking the yard, then went in the garage and came out with a kid shovel, but as she started trying to pick up snow the shovel broke, and she made a funny face, dropped the shovel and moved on. I then saw her look down at her snow boots and noticing the tracks they were making, then she ran around looking at her different tracks. It was really cute. She was then cold and came in for some hot chocolate. I love snowy mornings.
We started off the holidays in the best way possible. My mom and I took Rex and Lucy to the Nutcracker. There is nothing that gets me more in the holiday spirit than seeing the Nutcracker. I don't know if it just brings back many memories of attending it with my family, or when I danced in it when I was young, but I think it is just so magical. Rex and Lucy could not have been better. They are pretty young to be going, but I knew they could handle it, and they did so great! I wish I had a picture of how cute they looked, all dressed up, and excited. My mom found us seats on the third row, and they loved watching the orchestra play so close. The first act , as always was so entertaining for them. Rex loved the mice, and the Nutcracker sword fight. After every number he sat up tall and clapped really hard. Lucy sat by me, and I had some little treats for her, thinking she would get kind of bored, but she just sat the whole time enthralled with it. She loved it! Her favorite part was, "the big woman", or the Mother Baffoon with all her little clown children under her skirt (which coincidently was the part my sisters and I were when we were young). My mom was so great , with snacks, and telling them the story before we got up there so they would be prepped. I think I want to make this a holiday tradition.
Thanksgiving was great. My mom had all the regular, delicious food we all love. Her table was set beautifully of course, and we had a nice meal talking about all the things we are grateful for from A to Z. It was fun. The kids did a gingerbread house while Amby and I went on a really long walk. Then we went to spend the rest of the evening with Ryan's family.
On Friday evening, my parents took Rex, Lucy, Tenley, and Ike in their jammies up to Heber to go on the Polar Express. It was quite the adventure for all. Rex and Lucy came back just glowing from such a fun night. Thanks Mom and Dad!
On Saturday, we blessed all the babies at my mom's house. It was a really nice event. The blessings were beautiful, and my mom and dad were perfect hostesses of course. It was nice to have so much of our family in town for the blessing. We all had a great night, and the babies were adorable. It is so cute to have these three babies so close in age. Rex calls them big, bigger, and biggest. There really is quite a range.
It was so fun just being with our families. We loved having our New Yorkers here, Davis and Ali. Tyson, Amby , Tenley, and new baby Ashton. And Chris, Rebecca, and Oliver too. Thanks for hanging.

It's a Guy Thing
Monday night I had a basketball game in a league I entered with some friends, so I got home after the kids were in bed. Macy was still up though, so we went downstairs and chatted for an hour or so. From the very beginning, Macy and I haven't had tons of common hobbies or other activities we both like doing together, so sitting around talking has always been the basic core of our relationship. That's perfect for me, because there's nothing I like more than good conversation, and she's always got some take on something that is completely new for me.
Anyway, we chatted for a while that night about everything- how my day had gone, and how her day had gone, planning for the holiday weekend, what the kids had been up to. But after all that, she never asked the one important question that was hanging in the air that night. Finally, we got up to go to bed, leaving that one topic still unspoken.
Before going to bed, I ran up to check in on Rex and Lucy. They are really bad at staying under blankets while they sleep, which is a constant frustration to me, so I always remake their beds with them sleeping in them, to get them sufficiently covered for when the night turns cold.
While I did this, Rex sort of yawned, and then opened his eyes. I sat down next to him and said hi. He blinked a few times and then said "Hey Dad. So did you guys win?"
"Yeah, we won."
"Good." And then he rolled over and went back to sleep.
Sometimes, it's nice to have another boy in the house.

Here is Rex's answer:
In case you didn't figure it out, the end of the sentence is ". . . by going on a roller coaster ride with him."
Other recent products of this fascinating mind and prodigious talent:
(Lion, above, tiger, below).
Finally, during Sacrament meeting today, Rex was getting antsy. In desperation, I asked if he could draw a picture of Andrei Kirilenko dunking a basketball. You can see the results below, which I think are none to shabby. Note the careful attentiveness to the fingers, which, combined with the infinitely long and skinny legs, denote Rex's acute observation of that famous Russian lankiness:

(Andrei Kirilenko, pictured here with his fingers)
P.S.- Sorry, Ryan wrote this post, but I'm signed on as Macy and have no idea how to change it!

Chatty Moments

After Rex went to bed one night, Lucy was sitting up with Ryan and I while we were watching tv. She saw a commercial of some transformer robot thing, and yelled, "Oh, Rex would love that!" So sweet of her to always be thinking of her older brother. It is so interesting how kids get so wrapped up in their sibings. Their little lives revolve around each other. I remember feeling that way for quite awhile about my older sister, Amby. So cute.
Rex was sleeping at Oma's house awhile back, and Oma had a Halloween decoration out (this was in September mind you). Rex said, "Oma, is this for Halloween?" Oma replied, "yes". Rex said, "yeah, I don't really like when people put Halloween stuff out too early."

One night Lucy came in from her room playing with Babes and said, "Dad, Babes doesn't have any friends." Rex replied, "Well you are her friend , Lucy". Lucy said, " Ummm, no, I am just a mom, Rex."

A few days ago Rex came downstairs after having slept in, and was a little groggy. The first thing he said was, "Mom, I really can fly!" I said, "Really?....like Superman?" He said, "Yes". Then a couple hours later he came into the kitchen kind of bugged and pouting, "Mom, I guess I can't fly......it was just a dream!" He was really torn up about it, and talked about it the whole day, asking why he can't fly, and how he could learn. He asked if maybe alien clothes would help or a ghost sheet, then maybe he could just float. Because floating would be sort of close to flying. It was really funny.
Rex went to work with Ryan a few weeks ago, and spent a while staring out the window at the street below, where State Street and South Temple intersect. He noticed the eagle gate and asked "Dad, why does that tunnel have a balden eagle on it?We went for a Sunday drive a while ago, and Rex wanted to stop at the 7-11 and get some drinks. We reminded him of a recent lesson about the Sabbath, and said "Rex, remember, it's the Lord's day?" He went quiet for a minute, and then said quietly to himself, in a sort of grumpy way "It's all of our day." Rex's religious instruction continued yesterday when he accidentally tripped Lucy and hurt her, but seemed unconcerned about showing any sympathy. Ryan asked him "Rex, if Jesus hurt someone, even accidentally, what would he do?" Rex thought for a minute and said: "He'd regive them." ( We think this is a reference to a lesson a while ago on forgiving, which, despite its merits, does not seem to have conveyed the definition of its topic word).

Isn't Oma a good sport? Here she is racing the kids.
