Northern Exposure

This month Drew, Garrett, and I took a car trip to visit family in Nebraska. Nana, Aunt Kim, and Cousin Shelby also joined us for our adventure. We loaded up Trey's Tahoe full of stuff, and left on a Saturday morning. The 850 mile trek with a 4 year old, an 11 month old, and a 16 month old went fairly smoothly- just not very quickly. We arrived at Gran-Gran's house at 1:30 the next morning. You see, every time we stopped, we had to change diapers, wait for babies to do their "business", nurse Shelby, wait 30 minutes for Drew to do his "business" as we are leaving the restaurant, eat, etc. Anyway, we were really blessed that it was as easy a venture as it was.

We had lots of fun in Nebraska. We visited many relatives (who had not met Garrett or Shelby before), went to the zoo, experienced the Lincoln Children's Museum (which is even better than the Houston one!), had pictures taken, ate Valentino's, went shopping, and more!

And for some added excitement to the trip, Kimberly, the kiddos, and I decided to become storm chasers. That's right! The weather system that killed four boy scouts in Iowa also spun out a few tornadoes in Lincoln while we were there. Mom, Kim, the kids, some friends of my mother's, and I were eating at the Cracker Barrell when the tornado sirens started going off. The waiter had said earlier that the management did not know what they were going to do with everyone, but they might put people in the freezer. When the sirens went off, we volunteered! However, they had not decided what to do for sure do to the liabilities! So Kim and I grabbed the kids, tossed them frantically in the car and took off with the sirens blaring! The rain and hail were so bad I couldn't see anything, so we ended up missing the turn to my grandmother's house (She lives less than a mile from the Cracker Barrell). As Kim is screaming to me to pull over so we can go knock on some stranger's door, we finally zipped in to my grandmother's neighbor's house, grabbed the kids, and ran into the basement. (My grandmother doesn't have a basement.) Luckily we were okay, but it certainly gave us all a scare. Mom showed up shortly afterwards with her friends. On the way home to Texas we stopped in Ft. Worth and ate (and actually got to eat our meal this time) at another Cracker Barrell. Drew commented, "it's not even raining!".

The kids really enjoyed themselves and did well for being so far from home. We came back the next Saturday, this time by 9:30. We enjoyed our Cornhusker relatives, but were glad to be home in Aggieland.

Homerun Drew!

Drew finished up his Pee Wee Baseball with Trey this week. He enjoyed learning to hit, field, catch, pitch, and run the bases. We learned he is the next Nolan Ryan or A-Rod. A golden glove award just may not be in his future. Here is his last at-bat.
