Trip to Nauvoo

On Oct 4-8 I had the opportunity to go to Nauvoo with the Northwest Managers for a conference with Deseret Book. We flew into St. Louis first and we had a couple of hours to use up while we waited for one manager to arrive. All of us went downtown to "The Arch" Gateway to the West. It is an amazing edifice. We didn't go up in it, but standing down at the base showed us just how big it was.
We arrived in Nauvoo, and after viewing the Joseph Smith Movie in the Visitors Center there, we went outside for our buggy ride with these two beauties. Rod and Rick, 4 year old Belgians. We took a tour around parts of Nauvoo and learned much about why it was a swamp in the first place and what they did to drain it. Very interesting.

This is a shot I took when we were walking around and visiting the homesteads, shops and historical sites. The Nauvoo Temple is a beautiful site!

I took this shot at sunset. This beautiful monument of Joseph and Hyrum as they rode to Carthage.

This view of the temple was right at sunset as well and it was a beautiful evening.

Thursday we took a short drive to Carthage. This is the jail where Joseph and Hyrum were, and that window is the window Joseph fell from. This was a very solemn experience. The Church takes such great care of these properties and the missionaries that oversee the tours are blessed with a wonderful spirit as they tell about what happened and answer questions.
It amazed me that I was actually at the place where the Prophet Joseph was, in the very room where the mob took his and Hyrum's lives. It was a very reverent place.

This is a picture of trees in "The Groves" in Nauvoo. This is the place where Joseph would give his talks and lectures to the masses of people there in Nauvoo. He gave his King Follett Sermon right here. Go to LDS.org and read it. It is amazing.
The final morning early at 7 am we took a walk down the Trail of Hope where the people of Nauvoo made their exodus to cross the Mississippi river. It was a sad time for them to leave their beautiful homes and the city they had made from a swamp. Mostly it must have been hard to leave the temple they had worked and sacrificed to make.
Here is a picture of the Mississippi River. It is very wide and very hard for me to imagine them crossing such a large body of water in the winter with no where to go.

This is a grove of trees in the morning light as we walked down the trail. Beautiful!

The morning mist of Nauvoo. I hated to leave, but my testimony of Joseph Smith, the Restoration of the Gospel of Jesus Christ and of all they suffered and did for us will be with me always. I am so glad I got to go. This was my second time at Nauvoo, but this time we actually spent a few days there not just hours. It truly made a difference. The whole experience of Nauvoo was great and that place has a very special spirit.

Life with Carter

We have the great pleasure of having Carter, Natalie and Robby living with us. It is a fun adventure each day. On this day, Carter discovered the Coo-Coo Clock. He watches it carefully.
Then Coo-Coo! His expression says it all! I love his faces as he explores, looks at or is upset with things around him.

We had been wanting to put up a swing and having Carter here gave us the perfect reason, along with 9 other reasons that come to visit! Here again, his little face is so cute and he loves the swing.
Carter had his 2nd birthday just recently. He LOVES Toy Story. Robby made this fantastic cake! The party was in a lovely setting in the back yard at Carter's G&G Rocks home. So fun!

Carter sort of blew out the candle (Mommy did it) of his cupcake. Natalie made the most darling "Alien" cupcakes that went with the Toy Story theme.

Rob and Nat's friend Melissa, crocheted the most awesome BSU cap for Carter. So clever!

Robby had to try on the cap of course, and it looks as if he is really serious about this hat!
Well, this is just a bit of what is happening around here. Carter has brought us a bunch of fun, and like I said, life with him (a 2 year old) is a fun adventure everyday. Carter has a wonderful mommy and daddy who devote much of their time just for him. He is a lucky kid.

Derek's graduation

Here is a shot of the graduate as he is getting ready to enter the Marriott Center in Provo. It happened August 12th and 13th 2010
Here Mark reaches up to his son whom he is so proud of! We'll see you inside D.
Derek is on the phone with Chad so we can find him in the masses. There he is!
Derek receives his diploma
Outside, Eva is happy to see her Daddy. She tries on his funny hat!
It takes the love of a whole family to get through school and then graduate. What a great family and great support from Tara!
Tara planned a great party for Derek. Here are some tasty dishes from 5 Latin countries. Yum. They were all delicious! So fun to try new things. I am a fan.
I loved her cupcake arrangement!
Everyone is having fun testing out Tara's great foods, and giving congratulations. Way to go Derek we are all very happy for you.

Gardening

This year's garden started slow. I had to replant my beans due to SLUGS eating all the beans as soon as they emerged from the ground. Frustrating. So, replanted and then this! Beautiful beans and lovely Zinnias.
I love to plant marigolds around the permimeter of the garden for color and they help keep the bugs down.
The tomatoes are fair. There is a huge plant up close to the fence that just didn't want to get fruit. The closer plant did and they are just now ripening. That took a while. We had a wet spring, making for a slow start for many gardeners this year.

Summer Trip to Omaha

Mark and I went to Omaha to see Loralee, Mike and the kids. We had a great time. Mark worked with Mike on installing all new doors on the interior of their home. I forgot to get pictures of that project, but perhaps Loralee will share her pictures on her blog.
We didn't make it to the zoo this trip but we did go to the Air and Space Strategic Air Command Museum. One area had these giant soft blocks. Kaitlynn made this little house and Hailey came in for a visit!

While we were there, we happened upon this area with information on the Doolittle Raids in 1942 on Japan. Here is one of the sixteen B-25B Bombers used in that Raid.

While reading the information about the sixteen Bombers it hit me when I saw the name "Dean Edward Hallmark" listed as shown below. His picture is in the upper left corner. He was the pilot of the Green Hornet. He was related to my Dad, James David Hallmark. (sadly to say I need to read more about how he was related)

Kaitlynn is pointing to his name listed below. It was so sad to read and see pictures where he was imprisoned, tortured, and finally after a few years executed. His plane was running low on fuel after they bombed Japan, and had to fly to China, where his crew was captured. It was very educational and made me want to learn more so I Googled more about it. His remains are in Arlington Cemetery in Virginia.

On a lighter note, the kids love their pool! Kaitlynn and Hailey are showing us how they play! They run down their hill and throw themselves into the pool. They play out there for hours! Kaitlynn's lips turn blue and Hailey shivers, but they still just love it.
Loralee came and got us so we could see how Mikey fell asleep one night. What a funny guy! It is amazing how kids can fall asleep in the strangest positions!

We made our trip to Winter Quarters Temple and Visitors Center. It is beautiful there and with the Winter Quarters Cemetery adjoining the Temple grounds it has a very sweet spirit there. What a great looking family!
Another shot with the Temple in the background.

At night I would read to the girls. We always read books to the kids while they were young, and the Bernstein Bears books were some of their favorites. Just overlook that elephant sitting in the little pink chair!
Loralee and I spent time together working in her beautiful gardens, playing with the kids, and getting a pedicure. We had a great time!

Memorial Day 2010

Kaitlynn is giving Harley a little love as he has to sit under the tree away from the BBQ

We had a great time on Memorial Day. It was a rainy day, but we still made it work! All of us met together for a picnic, even if it was only for a couple of hours. We had a crazy day of different families coming and going, babies nap times and those who had to travel back home. Some of the mommies had to leave a little early and get the kids home for naps before I even had time to get my camera out, so I am sorry we didn't get pictures of all of us! Most everyone got to play ball, which is a family tradition. The hamburgers were great and everyone contributed to the great food we had. Thanks everyone.

Robby at bat...

The cousins had a great time playing together! Emma was a great "big sister" to all of the kids as she pushed them in the swings, and played with them at the playground.
Marky was all over the place playing with everyone. Petra and Mikey loved to swing.

Our beautiful "newlywed" MiKayla seemed to have a nice time. Even though it was a rainy day, she seemed to make it sun-shiny with that great smile.

Loralee got some at bat time as well, but took some time to help Mikey swing at some. Fun times for all!

Emma and Carter dash under the pavillion for cover. I love Carter's green rain gear and boots. Too cute!

Mikey, Emma and Hailey loved to swing too, and we had a hard time getting them to come and eat.

Mike and Loralee got to hold baby Baron when we first got to the park. Everyone loved catching up and spending time with nieces and nephews.

Wendy loved Cooper, the newest addition to Mike and Loralee's family.
We had fun despite the challenges of this "Memorial" Day.
