21 Months!

Today our BIG boy turns 21 months old!

isn't he handsome? :)

Adam is now 34.5in tall and about 30lbs. Busting out of the 2Ts already! This morning he's delighting us with new words. He has easily over 300 words and is starting to use 3-4 word sentences. He tells us when he's ready for bed by announcing, "Bedtime!" (or "Naptime!") and saying night-night to everything in the room. He likes to make up songs ("twinkle twinkle little MAMA! how I wonder what you MAMA!") and play the drums, xylophone and piano. (Even at the playground, he'd rather play "drumsticks" than climb and slide.) He melts my heart when he sings along to The Beatles. Last night he mastered a puzzle app (numbers and shapes) on our iPod that about knocked my socks off, and he displayed some crazy memory skills when he looked outside and said, "windy! play kites?" He's obsessed with Rainbow Horse. And buttons! His favorite book is "Ten Apples Up On Top" and we read it again and again and again. He likes to put his DVDs and animals into neat little rows. He loves puppies and is endlessly fascinated by ants. His favorite food is black beans, followed by fresh fruit smoothies and ... Doritos. (I know.) He can count up to 30 and backwards from 10. (Alphabet was mastered by 15 months!) He's still very attached to Mama, and he keeps us on our toes. This child never stops moving, talking or singing! He's not even still and quiet in his sleep. Tomorrow he's getting his 3rd haircut and some new shoes. :)

I'm so far behind on this blog (you don't even want to know how many unfinished posts I have sitting in the Drafts folder), but I'm stealing a few minutes during naptime to cut and paste from Facebook. Laziness? or efficiency? meh. ;)

Adam's First Trick-or-Treat

Ready to go

I has a bucket.

"Ham-gur-ber" suit from Aunt Becky

Adam was so excited about the candy that he started shoving handfuls of it into his mouth, wrapper and all.

Lollipops were his favorite!

September 13, 2010 - playing with Mama's phone

Well, our busy little bundle of joy has had his first birthday (leave it to me to be incapable of blogging about it for 3 weeks. The only computer time I get is when AJ is asleep in my lap, and one-handed blogging is not my strong suit). Birthday photos can be viewed here.

Where did this past year go? How do babies grow up so fast? This has been the most challenging year of my life so far, and I can't believe I'm saying this, but I already miss it. It's strange how no amount of pictures, videos or journal entries can make up for that time. I was there, but in a way, I feel like I missed something. Every nanosecond of your baby's life just slips away like water through a sieve! Even though being Mama to this very active, highly spirited, fiercely attached, curious, expressive, extroverted, powerful and dynamic pre-toddler makes it nearly impossible for me to complete just about any other task in my life, I do allow myself the delicious indulgence of "putting off today what can be done tomorrow" just so I can hold him/play with him/look at him a little longer and relish this precious time we have together. I do it because I can, and because it's those delicious moments that revitalize my commitment to him and recharge my batteries. Being a mom is so hard, and most of the time I feel like I am not cut out for it, or at the very least doing it all wrong. I'm constantly exhausted, sore, disheveled, mentally and emotionally drained... at least once a day I find myself overwhelmed and wondering how I'm going to make it (and I only have this one little person as my only employer! Don't get me started on the kind of superhuman powers one must be endowed with to handle more than this. I am a colossal wimp). But I'm pretty sure every mom I've ever known has felt the same way at some point, so I should do my best to suck it up. (We do have our good days, they are just hard to come by.)

We love our boy so much, it's impossible to find the words to express it. He is so beautiful, and such a character, and it is amazing to watch him grow. These past few weeks in particular, Adam has appeared more mature each morning. We can see it in his eyes and hear it in his voice. Even his mischief-making (exploring/learning, I know) has matured. It's fascinating, although extremely challenging at times. I recently read a quote in a parenting book that seemed the most apt description of our toddler: "He has a very strong will, and an even stronger won't."

He's a typical 1-year-old in a thousand ways that are likely only thrilling to John and me. It's the unique little "Adam-isms" that I want to remember forever:

  • he loves music, and he will "dance" to it whenever he hears it by waving his arms up and down (like the dancing banana in the Peanut Butter Jelly Time video). Occasionally, he'll tap his fingers to the beat or applaud at the end of a song. If he knows the song, he will call out the occasional word or sing along as best as he can. His favorite song is "Bananaphone." We sing together all the time, and he's finally warmed up to listening to the radio in the car, although for long car rides we do still need to sing to him after a while to keep him from crying. (He hates long car rides!)

  • he doesn't walk on his own yet (he can, but he chooses not to. Not that I'm in any hurry to chase after him, mind you), so he is literally under my feet all day. He clings to me like velcro.

  • he loves any gadget with buttons, beeps or lights (perfect distraction for diaper changes) and likes to pretend each item is a phone, by holding it up to his ear. This includes remote controls, video game controllers, and some of his smaller toys. He's obsessed with our cell phones and gets really mad when we use them for their intended purpose (thereby preventing him from playing with them).
  • he really likes to make eye contact with people and I constantly find him flirting with cashiers, waitresses and the other moms at the park. At least twice a month I'm stopped by a lady in a store who finds it remarkable how expressive and communicative he is.
  • when you ask him how old he is, he holds up his finger and says, "None!"
  • he thinks it's hilarious when you flick water in his face, "boop" his nose, and hide toys in his shirt.
  • whenever we empty the ice cube trays or put ice cubes into our drinks, he shouts, "ice! ice!" until we give him a little piece of ice to eat or play with.
  • I painted my toenails for the first time in a long time a few weeks ago, and I guess they look delicious to Adam, because he's always trying to bite my toes. He laughs when I squeal at him.
  • he loves Elmo from Sesame Street. He has two Elmo shirts and is constantly pulling them out of laundry baskets. Getting dressed in his Elmo clothes is pretty much the only time he doesn't protest a shirt going over his head.
  • he hates wearing socks or being covered with a blanket.
  • he likes to taste the bubbles in his bath; he'l lean down and dip his face in the bubbles for a second, then sit up and giggle with a big bubble beard.
  • he uses the signs for milk, more, where, no and potty.
  • he can say Mom, Dad, AJ, hi, sing, keys, cookie, cheese, ice, more, one, two, three, yeah, tree, yucky, hot, phone ("fhmmm"), binky, banana ("nana"), sun, star, fish, duck, door, light, off and on.
  • he waves goodbye, but usually only after the person leaving is out of view.
  • he will devour an entire peach, or a can of mandarin oranges, in one sitting. His other favorites are cheese, pears, watermelon, grapes, black beans, yogurt, ham, meatballs, and goldfish crackers. and chocolate!
  • when he's eating something he likes, he'll make the sign for more, and if you give him more while his mouth is still full, he'll pull the food he's eating out of his mouth to make room for the new food. Even though it's the same food.
  • he's outgrowing his pacifier now, but it's so cute to play "neverending binky" -- if he has a binky in his mouth and he finds (or is offered) a 2nd binky, the first one comes out and the second one goes in. Then he'll see the first binky in his hand (or we'll offer it, for fun) and he'll swap them out again. and again. ...and again.
  • I don't remember teaching him these, but whenever you say "mouth" he will pat his mouth with the palm of his hand and say "Aaahhh." Also, he clicks his tongue ("tick tock") whenever he sees a clock (even a digital one).

Needless to say, we think he's super terrific and adorable and brilliant. We love making memories with him and hopefully we'll get to blog about more soon!

8 Months

Our gorgeous baby boy is 8 months old today. What a hunk. ♥

Adam has boundless energy, astounding strength for his size, and a very loud voice.

4.5 months

He loves to discover, explore, destroy, "do it myself," get messy, sing, and bounce. Bounce, bounce, bounce!

5 months

He doesn't crawl yet, but that hasn't stopped him from getting into trouble! Roll-roll-roll-pivot, roll-roll-roll-pivot: he's a mover and a shaker.

5.5 months

He thinks "big people" food is the greatest thing ever. He flirts with all the ladies. He enjoys his books (will sit still for story time up to 30 minutes) and can point to pictures and clap his hands.

6 months

He's sensitive, intense, expressive, and an attention hog. And a bed hog. He likes toys that make noise but he's terrified of hair dryers, vacuums, spray cans, diesel engines and train whistles. He despises his car seat. He LOVES bath time. And being outside.

6.5 months

He knows what's off-limits and prefers gadgets (i.e. remote controls and cell phones) to his own brightly-colored, age-appropriate toys. He's addicted to YouTube (Sesame Street, mostly).

7 months

He has an infectious laugh and a charming smile.

7.5 months

He's long since outgrown his swing and bouncy chair, and he's already wearing 12M clothes! He's working on some new teeth and new words (his first word was "Dada!").

7.5 months

Every day is filled with new wonders, challenges and breakthroughs. We couldn't be prouder, more fascinated, or more in love with our precious little guy.

Happy 8-month birthday, A.J.!

4 Months

Okay, so I totally fail at this mommy blogging thing. ;)

If you're on Facebook, you've probably seen all the latest photos and videos, but I know there are a couple of my blog readers who don't do the Facebook thing and wonder if we're still alive.

I'm pleased to report that we're doing well. Adam is growing like a weed and running us ragged in the process, but that's life! I've always heard parents say that this time goes by so quickly, and I never really appreciated just how precious each moment is until I'm living it. I'm just astounded by how quickly my baby is growing. As challenging as it is to care for a newborn, I already miss the "newness" of him. It wasn't long ago that he was just itty-bitty, and even though I'm with him 24/7, I feel like I've missed something. Where did my brand new little baby go? This is the age where a baby wakes up from each nap a little bit older and wiser. It's fun, yet fleeting. :)

Since my last blog post, we've hit some fun milestones like first laughs, tickles, rolling over from front to back, and beginning to gnaw on anything he can get his hands on. His newest skill is "singing" and "talking" to us, imitating language sounds and discovering the many possibilities of his voice. He loves to have conversations with us, and charms us with plenty of eye contact and BIG smiles. Such a heartbreaker! I certainly can't get enough of him.

We're also really enjoying his sense of humor. He's very expressive and loves to laugh and make funny faces in the mirror with Mama. We know he's definitely ours, because the potty jokes have already begun! I'm pretty sure his first word will be "poop." (haha!) He hasn't said "Mama" or "Dada" yet, but he does say "Boop" during diaper changes* and before and after certain "percussive" activities that take place in his diaper. He thinks it's hilarious. (So do we; I'm sure we encourage it.)
*(I do realize this is purely coincidental, since babies don't use words in context until they're closer to a year old, but it's still cute. His hungry cry has sounded like "ung-ee" since he was a couple of weeks old.)

Adam is a very busy kid. Constantly moving, and already tough to keep up with. He still nurses around the clock and is not on a 24-hour schedule yet (although we're establishing some routines, he has yet to catch hold of a daytime/nighttime pattern, so in that respect, he's still very much like a new baby). He prefers standing (with help) to sitting, and he requires constant human contact and interaction. We've figured out that A.J. is the type of kid who doesn't like to be alone in a room or even be left to entertain himself for more than five minutes. He wants to be with one of us around the clock, wherever the action is. He even sleeps best in arms or right up next to me. I couldn't live without my wrap. He's in it for hours and hours every day, and we never leave home without it. (One shopping trip without the wrap frazzled me to my very core! Lesson quickly learned.) He's generally a good-natured, happy and easy-going child, as long as his demands are constantly and consistently being met to his satisfaction. It's taken us a long time to figure this out, and ... well, it's hard to describe without being answered back with "that's just how babies are." But it's not. It's how HE is. (We figure he fits 11 of the 12 characteristics on the "High Needs Baby" list. Countless lost hours of sleep and frustrated tears later, we're learning how to work with these charming little traits.) He'll quickly turn from the happiest baby on the block to the fussiest squawk-a-roo on the planet in .006 seconds. About 871 times a day. But that's our boy.

He loves songs and story time. His favorite book is one of John's childhood favorites, "
Hand Hand Fingers Thumb." He'll sit still for that book at any time of day, over and over again. He likes to drum the pages with his hand, and will even help turn the pages. Another one he enjoys right now is "The Very Busy Spider." We do the animal voices and he listens very intently. (He always smiles for the cat. "Meow! Meow! Want to take a nap? Meow!") He always has smiles for Pat-A-Cake, Itsy-Bitsy-Spider, Once There Was a Snowman, Rubber Ducky, and the Alphabet Song. We bounce and bounce and bounce to Tigger's song and Henry the Eighth ("Second verse! Same as the first!"). He settles quickly to our standard lullabyes (mostly Beatles and some Scottish folk songs) and has a soft spot for his Dada. (John has the magic touch and can settle Adam in record time! Sometimes a boy just needs his dad.)

We feel incredibly honored to be Adam's parents. Not a day goes by that we don't remark to each other how amazing he is, how smart, handsome, funny, and precious he is, how unbelievably lucky we are to have him in our lives. And it's still just the beginning. :)
