Granpa visits

Owen's Granpa came for a couple of days this week, and they had a good time together. Owen was a little scared at first, but after about 15 minutes, he was having fun with Granpa. They bonded over a game of catch with a football that Granpa brought for him. The time went by fast, but we had a fun time. Here are some pictures from the visit.

Walking in a Winter wonderland

Owen loves to be outside. It's been the one of the few constants about Owen so far. Only recently, however, did he realize that he can get us to take him outside more-or-less whenever he wants to. Pardon the back-story while I catch you up. Cara and Owen started playing this game a while back where he would throw one of his plastic balls onto the recliner. It would settle against the back of it where he couldn't reach it. He wanted help but didn't know how to ask for it. We've been trying to teach him some signs for everyday things, so Cara said "help" and gave the sign. They repeated this game over and over, and Owen learned that he could say "ha" (for help) and we would help him. Well, "ha" is the word around the house since about Thanksgiving, and it's become a fun game of trying to figure out exactly what "ha" means in any given circumstance. Over this past week, while Cara and I have had some time off and Owen has been able to stay home from daycare, he started going to the window, hitting on the pane, and saying "ha". Thickheaded daddy didn't get it, so Owen then went to the front door, pounded on it, and said "ha". Oh, he wants to go outside. We had a great time. We went on walks to the park in his stroller, and he loved going down the slide and on the swing with me. We also just spent some time playing in the front yard. I took some pictures of him in his element. Everyone's Texas snow pictures inspired me to show you what the Winter looks like in Charleston. With all the trees we have in our neighborhood, it's a steady downpour of leaves from Fall til mid-Winter. As you will see, I had gotten a little behind in the leaf cleanup department. Oh well, it made for a more fun playground for Owen. Also, no snow.

Christmas Morning

Today Owen had his second Christmas, but the first one where he was actively involved in the present-opening process. Well, in theory he was to be involved in the process, though he minimally participated this year. He liked tearing the paper some, but he liked digging his old toys out even more. So, in the end, Cara and I opened most of his toys. Thanks to everyone for the gifts. He didn't need many toys since he just got some for his birthday, and he got the perfect amount for Christmas. Here are some pictures from this morning. There are also some pictures from last night. We went to the "Festival of Lights" at the County Park last night, a 3-mile drive through the park with lots of decorations in lights. A lot of the figures are lit up in synchrony so that it looks like things are moving. It's a pretty neat thing they do, and we thought Owen might enjoy seeing all the designs. They had a little "train" that we rode around the park to see light designs like a frog jumping into the water, a dolphin jumping out of the water and splashing back in, Santa hitting a hole-in-one with his driver, dinosaurs, snowflakes, reindeer...but of these things, what captivated Owen's attention the most? The little snap on the back of the seat in front of us that was used to snap a tarp in place. He was mesmerized by it. We didn't get any pictures of the snap, but here are some others. Merry Christmas.

Christmas time is here

We were able to find a small Christmas tree to put up in the house this year. We have a tall one we've been using, but we were a little concerned that Owen might somehow pull it over onto himself. I'm not sure how things would have gone if we did put up the big one, but he has already pulled the little one over to the floor. He just thought it was funny. He's less fascinated with the lights than I thought he would be, but seems to be more interested in the ornaments, especially the ones that Mommy put up that have bells on them. Owen seems to be primed for present opening tomorrow. Cara gave him some newspaper yesterday and he had a blast wadding it up, tearing it, and pushing it around the house. Here are a few pictures from the past few days. Owen finally realized that you don't take things off the tree, you put things on the tree. Can you find the decoration that Owen added to our tree?

Owen the Grey

You've probably noticed that it's been awhile since we've posted anything new. Mainly, we are all just so worn out. The three of us are sick, and have been since the week before Thanksgiving. I think we're all feeling better now, but, when this house gets sick, it's Maslow's hierarchy in full effect here, and blogging just isn't in the bottom part of that triangle. Here is a recent webcam recording. You won't notice too much more than from the previous video, but you will probably be able to see that Owen is walking much easier. He can get going pretty fast when he's feeling up to it. A funny thing in this video is that Cara is giving him some snacks, and he's really interested in those, but he's also interested in watching himself on the computer while the video is recording, so you see him going back-and-forth between us satisfying all his interests. There is this one part where he lays his head on the table and he's talking to me just telling me everything on his mind. It was really cute; too bad we don't speak the same language yet. He's doing so many great things these days; he has the greatest personality and is really funny. Well, hopefully you all will get to see him soon. Until then, here's some more walking video.
