First snow and 6 weeks old

Elise and Jack have had a great time in the snow this week.  We did a lot of playing in our yard and spent one afternoon sledding at the neighborhood elementary school.  The kids loved it!

Jack looks so old in this picture!

Claire is now 6 weeks old and doing great.  She's been smiling a lot and loving her awake time on the play mat.  At her 6 week checkup a few days ago, she weighed 9 lbs, 14 oz (48%) and measured 22 1/4 inches (72%).  She's been sleeping a lot of 7-8 hour stretches during the last week, which has been very nice for Mommy.  She is very excited to meet her aunts and uncles!

She gets the award for "Most Tolerant Baby"... can you guess why?

Family Christmas 2013

We celebrated our immediate family Christmas this past Saturday and look forward to celebrating with our families later this month in TX.  We've had snow on the ground for the last week and it snowed on Saturday as well, so I guess this counts as our first White Christmas :)

Good job, Mommy and Daddy, for smiling at the camera

Elise and Jack enjoyed helping Claire open her presents... they went shopping in the box of baby toys in the basement.  I wonder how many years we will be able to get away with that?

Claire got some new puzzles for Elise and Jack

Mommy and Daddy gave Elise the Duplo Cinderella Castle and it was a big hit!

Playing with the castle the next day

Mommy and Daddy gave Jack a set of Duplo train tracks... another big hit with both kids!

Mommy, are you ready for me to open it now?

Busy playing trains

Claire was thrilled about her new weather resistant blanket from Mommy and Daddy

Merry Christmas, Claire!

Elise gave Jack some new Duplo train parts and Jack gave Elise a new scarf and necklace.  They know each other so well :)

Mimi is here visiting with us this week :)

And she brought some more Duplos for the big kids.  Elise loves the princess carriage and Jack loves the Duplo cars... they can even drive on the train tracks.

We ended the weekend with some Duplo princess castle playing and group tummy time...

Claire is one month old!

Claire turned one month old last Saturday! We are so, so blessed with our little (ha!) family of 5.  What a fabulous month we had with this precious baby.

Stats:  Claire hasn't been to the doctor since 11/8 and goes back next week, but her unofficial weight at one month is 9.5-10 lbs and she is about 21.5 inches long. Even though I know I have plenty of "baby" months left, I'm already getting sad because she is growing up too fast.  Much to the delight of Elise's baby doll, Lucy, Claire has outgrown almost all of her newborn clothes. She wears size 1 diapers.

Sleeping:  She continues to be a great night time sleeper and napper. At 5 weeks, she started sleeping 7-8 hour stretches.  Prior to that, she would usually sleep for one 5-6 hour stretch followed by a 3-4 hour stretch. We try to put her to bed by 10 and she sleeps in the pack n play in our room with the miracle blanket. Elise and Jack were in their beds by a week or two old, but they didn't sleep well in the pack n play and we didn't have stairs. I figure I will move her upstairs after we get home from our Christmas trip to TX.  She sleeps well in her car seat and now she definitely prefers sleeping in the pack n play for naps as well.  If we put her in the bouncer or rock n play to sleep she will wake herself up and not take a full nap.  She also enjoys a little catnap on the couch with mommy and daddy after her siblings are in bed.

Eating: She continues to be a great eater as well. We haven't introduced a bottle yet (let's be honest, it's way quicker and easier for me to feed her myself and not mess with the bottle and an extra pumping session). We do plan to add that in this month so that we can take advantage of free and eager babysitters in TX :). She has been very amenable to the eat-play-sleep routine and is quite predictable for a one month old.  She typically eats at 7:30, 10:30, 1:30, 4:30, and then cluster feeds several more times before bed.  She stays awake for about an hour (eating and playing) and then takes about a 2 hour nap before the next feeding.

Playtime:  Claire loves the activity mat and usually spends 15-20 minutes playing on it after she eats.  She also loves for her big brother and sister to join her.  She isn't crazy about tummy time.  She also likes to look at people :)

We love you, Claire!  This month couldn't have been any better :)

Going, going, gone...

The first 3 weeks of #3

Miss Claire has now been part of our family for 20 days!  She is doing great and is, as Mike says, a "professional baby".  She's been a great eater and sleeper and only cries if it's time to eat.  We have thoroughly enjoyed the newborn snuggles :)  At night, she sleeps in the pack and play with the Miracle Blanket.  Mike may be the only newborn dad ever who has gotten 3 weeks of great sleep.  I have never needed to wake him up at night (except in the hospital) because she has been so easy.  She wakes up, I nurse her (and try to wake her up to keep her eating by changing her diaper, etc), and then she puts herself right back to sleep in the pack and play.  She's actually established a fairly regular daytime schedule.  I wake her to eat for the first feeding of the day around 7:30-8.  She eats again around 10:30, then again around 1-1:30, then again around 3:30-4, then again around 6:30-7, then again around 9-9:30 for the night.  So, basically, I wake her to eat every 2.5-3 hours during the day and then let her sleep until she wakes up at night.  At night, she sleeps for 3-6 hours between feedings.  We've all enjoyed her increased wake time between eating and sleeping.

Claire was born at 7 lbs, 4 oz on 10/30 and weighed 7 lbs exactly at her first pediatrician appointment on 11/1.  On 11/2, her big brother celebrated her due date with his first ambulance ride (from the urgent care to the pediatric ER).  I'll elaborate on that in his 2.5 year post.  On 11/6, I weighed myself and was thrilled to find that I had lost all 18 lbs of the baby weight.  My tummy is not back to normal yet but most of my jeans fit well :)  On 11/8, Claire went back to the doctor for her one week weight check and weighed 7 lbs 10 oz.  She's close to outgrowing her newborn clothes and her 0-3 month clothes fit well.  She went through her first growth spurt at two weeks old where she wanted to eat every two hours during the day for two days.  She's been such a sweet and fun baby!

So far, the transition to 3 has been manageable because we have a very easy baby and we've been blessed with lots of help over the last several weeks.  Elise and Jack have both loved their sister and haven't shown any signs of jealousy or changes in behavior.  The hardest part of the day is getting everyone fed and out the door on time in the morning (to get to preschool, church, bible study, etc).  Hopefully that will get easier as Claire gets faster at nursing and as she and I get longer stretches of sleep at night (and therefore, it will be easier for me to wake up earlier in the morning...).  The kids LOVE their grandparents and have had a great month with lots of extra attention.  Mimi was here from 10/18 - 11/9, Pop was here from 11/2 - 11/9, then Gram and Grandpa arrived on 11/14.  Grandpa had to go back to Texas yesterday but Gram gets to stay until Monday :)  The extra hands and adult company have been amazing.  It was also great to have many friends bring dinner for us when we were on our own in between visitors.

Now for some pictures!  We've had a lot of firsts over the last few weeks...
