Tangled Birthday party

Lina's birthday party is this Saturday. She chose a "Tangled" theme. I got a little crazy idea and decided to make the invitations (mind you, I'm the type of person who will go the easy-route and send evites/emails). I got this idea to make a Rapunzel and pulled out the ol' Sizzix and dies. Found some great ones! And I pulled some older papers from my stash (REALLY old--see that Thomas Kinkade patterned paper in the background?) It was really fun though to put these together. They aren't too elaborate but I figure for 9-year-olds, they should love them, right?
The hair swirls to the inside of the invite.

So, I need some ideas for the party. We are having breakfast--chocolate chip pancakes and strawberries. Lina wants to do sidewalk chalk drawings, dance, braid all the girls hair and put flowers in the braids, make friendship bracelets, and ????  We have the girls for three hours--I need some cute "Tangled" ideas. Anyone?
I'd love to send them each home with a paper lantern but need to find somewhere local to pick them up. I know my blog readers are creative--please share any ideas you have. I'll be SO thankful :)

February Paper Posies projects

Hooray! It's Friday :)  This morning I enjoyed donuts at the kids' school during the annual "Muffins for Moms". It is so fun to see so many moms there with their kids. The kids are SO excited, not only for the moms to be there with them, but to have donuts!

On to some projects . . . the February Paper Posies kit has some great products! Totally versatile for valentines or everyday life. I loved that I was able to get two boy pages out of this kit. Here are the 3 layouts and card that I put together:

You can see the rest of the Design Team projects in the gallery. Some amazing work! Enjoy your weekend :)

Beautiful Sunrise

Yesterday morning was a little rough for me.

Just when I thought I couldn't carry on,
I was treated to this amazing sunrise.

I stood out on the driveway for a few moments enjoying the view.

Took a deep breath.

And moved on with my day.

What calms you?

Tuesday Tutorial--Fast Fabric Flower

Hi :) Today is my day to post at the Polka Dot Whimsy blog. Here is my tutorial:

When I received the January PDW kit I LOVED the large blue fabric flower included! As I added it to my calendar project, I decided to make a smaller flower to go beside it. Several people have asked me how to make it so I thought that would be good material (pun intended) for a tutorial. :)
The flower is super easy to make--especially since the strips of fabric are included in the kit. All you'll need is:

--fabric strip (1 inch x 44 or so inches), sewing machine or needle and thread, glue gun, 1-1/2 inch paper circle

Step 1: Take your fabric strip and fold it in half, right side out. Sew a basting stitch down the side near the cut edges.

Step 2: At one end of the strip, pull your bobbin (or lower) thread and begin to gather the fabric, until you have about an 8-10 inch loose gather. Tie your threads to hold the gather.

Step 3: At the opposite end of the strip, start with a 1/4 inch fold and continue folding/rolling.

Step 5: As you get to the gathered end of the strip, be sure to keep the sewn edge on the bottom of the circle. I slightly move the gathered edges up so they are higher than the center of the circle.

Step 6: Hot glue the gathered end and bottom (raw edges) of the fabric together so they will hold the circular shape.

Step 7: Hot glue your fabric flower to the paper circle. Trim around the paper so it is close to the bottom of the fabric. I layered a thin piece of lace around the bottom to hide the hot glue.

Step 8: Add your sweet flower to a project :)

This is super easy! Let me know if you try it out. I'd love to see the results!

Crop Chocolate January projects

For about a year now, I have been making projects with Crop Chocolate projects. I just happened to luck into the time frame when they were looking for designers. Every quarter the Chocolatiers get a credit and then need to post one projects using products we bought from CC.

The program was recently changed. Now we are getting a monthly credit--but we also have to monthly projects, instead of quarterly. And the projects now have a specific assignment tied to them. I actually like that idea. Our assignment for January is "Valentines". I had not yet ordered anything valentiney from CC, but I had some other products from them that I thought would work.
I used the Echo Park "Everybody Loves Christmas" line of papers for the hearts. The ribbon is something that has been in my stash forever. American Crafts thickers.
For this card, I used Echo Park's "Life Is Good" line, and Making Memories Paper Reverie butterflies that I had purchases at CC.
Step by step instructions for each card can be found on the Crop Chocolate site.

Are you a Chocolate fan? Have you ever bought anything from them? What kind of products would you like to see them sell?

Spinach Cheese Tortellini

Earlier this week I mentioned making tortellini for the kids. Rebecca commented about adding some extras :)  So I looked up a recipe and found the perfect one. We had just received our weekly produce delivery and it included spinach and mushrooms. I don't know what came over me . . . but I cooked dinner! Donned my adorable apron mom gave me for Christmas and asked M1 to watch M2.

I used fresh spinach and tortellini instead of frozen, which the recipe calls for.

Ingredients

1 (19 ounce) package frozen cheese tortellini

1/2 pound sliced fresh mushrooms

1/2 cup butter

1 (10 ounce) package frozen chopped spinach, thawed and squeezed dry

1 large tomato, diced

1 (8 ounce) package cream cheese, cubed

3/4 cup milk

3 tablespoons grated Parmesan cheese

1 teaspoon garlic salt

1 teaspoon Italian seasoning

1/2 teaspoon pepper

Directions

1.Cook tortellini according to package directions. Meanwhile, in a large skillet, saute mushrooms in butter until tender. Add the spinach and tomato; cook and stir for 3 minutes. Stir in the remaining ingredients.

2.Bring to a boil over medium heat. Reduce heat; simmer, uncovered, for 15 minutes or until cheese is melted, stirring occasionally. Drain tortellini; add to skillet. Cook 2-3 minutes or until bubbly.

It was relatively easy to make. I really don't enjoy cooking. But this is a recipe I will make again. My kids ate it up, and DH liked it--enough to take leftovers for lunch the next day. And that's saying a lot!

Enjoy your weekend :)

Finishing up . . .

the January Paper Posies kit. I *heart* finishing up a kit. Seriously, it brings me much happiness. I used to hoard kits and save them for "that perfect project". No longer. Use it up, baby!

Once I get down to scraps of paper, remaining alphas, and a few embellishments, it all gets sorted into my stash. All that is left of this kit is less than 1/2 of the sparkly blue paper, the alphas, 12 inches of trim, and a handful of flower brads. So happy :)

What did I finish it off with, you ask? These:
A simple birthday card. It will be mailed in an envelope so I kept it flat. Added an SRM sticker for the sentiment--you'll be seeing lots more of those on my projects :)

These flowers are divine. My friend, Melanie, gave me such a good idea to use one on a headband or clip.
Did you noticed the dotted background on these cards? Making Memories alphabet packaging. Love reusing packaging!

This is the cover page for the album I made for my sister, Michelle. Yes, this one that I worked on LAST Memorial Day weekend, that she sent me the pictures for in June of 2009! This layout is based on a sketch by Liz Chidster. Mary Ann, one of the Paper Posies DT members, had challenged us last weekend to use the sketch.
This layout is based on a sketch by Lisa Hidy. Over at PersonalScrapper.com MB, Erica is setting us up with 52 challenges for this year. This was for week one--a New Year's layout. The photos are from New Year's Eve 2010, and New Year's Day 2011. And Sonda, from Paper Posies, had challenged us this week to make a layout about how we can become a better YOU. I need to believe in myself more and so the journaling reflects that.
Enjoy your day :)

Christmas Cards

Well . . . I'm finally mailing our Christmas Holiday cards today! Better late than never, right?

This is the picture we ended up choosing.

I'm so bummed that I didn't take a picture of all the ones we received this year. I hang them up on our door leading from the entryway to the garage. It just looks so fun to see the big collage of cards.

In the past I have put them all in an album. But last year I didn't get it done and they are still in a stack. And now I have this year's stack. I cannot throw them away or cut them up. Just not something I can do. Call me sentimental.

But I saw this fabulous idea on the Work In Progress Blog yesterday. I may try this. It is a fun (and easy!) idea.

Do you have a tried-and-true storage process for the cards you receive each year? Please share--I'd love to read them :)

Today's Tuesday

It's good day. I like that we start the week already one day in. Yesterday seemed like the weekend to me. Melanie and Lindsey came over to crop with me. They brought their cute boys and all 8 kids had a fun time together.

Went for a walk with Stanley this morning. So happy that it wasn't raining. It's hard to get out of bed that early but once I do and I'm out walking with Stanley I feel so much better.

Kids are off to school. Poor things--I served such a sugar-laden breakfast this morning: hot cocoa, toast with nutella and sprinkles, and a banana. Lunches will be a little healthier: chicken salad sandwich, apple, string cheese, and bunny grahams.

Household chores to do--laundry, dishes, a bit of vacuuming.

Interior designer coming to do some finishing work on the dining room (this isn't a splurge for me . . . we are trading services. Her design work for my house; I teach her girls piano lessons).

Lunch with KK.

Would love to make a trip to Great Harvest, but since we still have two store-bought loaves on the counter that can wait until Thursday or Friday.

M has piano lessons this afternoon.

DH has a late meeting so won't be home for dinner. Let's see . . . should I offer cold cereal or mac-n-cheese? Well, I could try a little harder and make tortellini. They would love that.

PT appointment.

This day seems like it will be so relaxing. I'm excited!

Hope you enjoy your 18th day of January :)

A not-so-boring Saturday

Saturday we didn't have a thing on the agenda. After sleeping in until 9am, I dragged myself out of bed and was treated to a delicious breakfast. My DH is the best! He made eggs with cheese, toast, and canadian bacon. AND a special hot cocoa just for me--it was so rich and thick. He said it included egg nog and half-n-half. I felt the fat settling on my hips :)

Then we decided to go for a walk. At first, I thought just DH and I would walk up the parkway. But, no, he had other ideas. So we wrangled up all the kids and loaded into the van. It wasn't raining but the skies were grey. The kids were all curious where we were headed.

We just went down the road to the fabulous Snoqualmie Falls. The falls were raging! Completely pouring over the edge. The kids commented that there are usually two streams of water coming over the ledge. The water levels were some of the highest I have seen since we have lived here. It was so amazing--the mist practically soaked us through! I wished I had had my camera but at the same time was glad I didn't because of all the moisture.

Then we headed down to the railroad station in town. We walked along the tracks, visited the big log, walked around the depot, and looked at the train cars. I pointed out the the caboose was built the same year Grandma Kathy was born. It seems older than that, the kids commented.

We crossed the road and the kids thought we were headed to Koko Beans, a little coffee shop. But DH wanted to keep walking. We checked out the building on the corner currently for lease. The beauty shop moved across the road by the river. I asked DH what kind of business he thought should go in there. He said something to cater to the tourists, since it is right across from the train depot. Sandwich shop, bakery items, little gift trinkets, etc. I mulled that over as we continued down the sidewalk past the other shops. A few of the businesses downtown have gone out of business recently. I know it must be hard in a small town. I'm not sure what could survive down there. He said maybe we should start something . . . maybe. But I'm not ready for that kind of investment, of money or time.

We turned back onto another street so we were off the main thoroughfare, away from all of the traffic. The city recently renovated this street. It looks nice. We continued on, walking the entire length of the town. The kids were having a good time, poking mud with sticks, kicking the mole holes, and just being silly in general. Eventually we made it to Herfy Burgers. The kids were a little worn out by now. As we approached the counter, the guy behind it said, "uh, just so you know, we are out of propane. We can't cook anything right now." Anything? No burgers, no fries, no hot dogs--oh, he said he could microwave those. He mentioned it would be about 5 minutes before the propane arrived. There were already 5 other customers waiting for orders. We inquired about milkshakes, trying to think of something to appease the kids. "Well, I only have chocolate syrup right now," was his reply. Hmmm . . . guess we'll go somewhere else. Mind you, Herfy's is not next door to any other eating establishment. It is a few blocks down at the end of town.

So we gathered the troops, headed back up the road. To help pass the time, I played Simon Says with the kids as we walked along the road. They really enjoyed that. Even Merek got into it. He loves when I say "ready, set, go" and he'll run up to wherever the others are. We made it to Got Rice and went in for a lunch of Chinese food. The kids always get a kick out of reading the placemats with the year of the animals. "What are you? What are you?" they always check with each other. I am an Ox. Krish is a Sheep. We aren't compatible. DH is a Boar and I think he is supposes to stay away from Oxen. Bird and Miranda aren't supposed to get along either but I can't remember what their signs are. Merek is a Rat. Lina . . . can't remember that either (but with all of the new astrological signs does all of this really make a difference?). Anyway it is a fun activity to do while we wait for the food--which at Got Rice doesn't usually take long. It is our Chinese food place of choice here in the valley.

As we left the restaurant, it began to rain, just a little. We stayed on the back street. Played Simon Says again to make it go a little faster for the kids. When we got back to the depot, the kids performed an impromptu concert for us in the gazebo. LOVED it! They are so funny, singing and dancing. Sometimes they make up songs. Sometimes they recite movie lines (among their current favs is I Love Lucy). As they giggled and sang, I snuggled up to DH and said, "We made them. How cool it that?" :)

It began to rain a little harder and we still had a block to go to get to the van, so we said it was time to go. Back past the big log, the rose garden, and across the tracks. What a fun three hour adventure we had, in our little town, when we had nothing else planned for the day. This is one of the things I love the most about DH--he likes to just go and see what happens.

*sigh*

I love him.

When we got home, the kids went outside--in the rain--to build fairy houses. I laid down on the love seat with Merek for a nap. He surprised me by falling asleep pretty quickly. We napped for about two hours. No one knew we were there--they thought I had taken him upstairs for a nap. But they were still quiet for the most part.

After the nap, DH and I took Merek to the grocery store and  bought some food for dinner and today. We also rented Social Network from RedBox. DH made yummy tacos for dinner. The kids played school (the girls set up a schedule and "teach" their brothers. It is amazing!). I got ambitious and started making invitations for Lina's still-to-be-scheduled birthday party. Pulled out my old Sizzix and some dies, found some old papers. Loving how they are turning out! (And I found a pennant die--HELLO banners!) After all kids were in bed, we turned on the movie and enjoyed some popcorn.

It was a good day for having nothing on the schedule.

Hip 2-b Square December Kit Layouts

The December Hip 2-b Square kit was packed with color and tons of paper. Here are the five layouts I completed with the kit and add-ons:

I loved layering these strips of Cosmo Cricket papers, and the October Afternoon border sticker. I hand-cut then hand-stitched around the cloud.  I popped it up for a little dimension.

Any LO about Lina has to include pink :) I love the little labels on the CC paper. The Sassafrass chipboard numbers are a fun addition to projects.

For this layout I used the same January PageMap I had contributed for the newsletter. I just turned it 90 degrees. The hand-stitching around the edges was inspired by this Jing-Jing Nickel post.

I used a sketch by Lisa Hidy for this LO. Not sure why the pics turned out so dark but I loved how much I journaled.

The DT used a sketch by Julie Bonner for one of their layouts. I loved the squares! My interpretation is a little different than the original. To make the FAMILY stand out, I cut out the letters with a craft knife then backed it with the green cardstock. This is probably my favorite layout of the bunch.
Thanks for stopping by! Hope you are enjoying your weekend :)

Hip 2-b Square December Kit Cards

Four cards for you to view this month. I LOVE the flower trim--so pretty.
No sewing on this card--I used my paper piercer and SU template for the holes. Then just connected the dots with a pen. The pleated flower is fun to make but I'm wondering if there is an exact width and scoring spacing to use. I seem to have to make 2-3 before getting one that works. Suggestions, anyone?

This little girl sticker from October Afternoon is just too sweet ;-)
For this card I used CPS 199:
I trimmed the WRMK doily trim in half, then gathered it around the back of the Cosmo Cricket PP cut out. After adding the sentiment, it needed something more so I hand stitched along the tag. Then it needed something more so I inked the edges. Then a little more . . . out came the paper piercer again. My girls like how it turned out.
I have so many Thank You's to send! This gal just reminded me of all the nice things people have done for me lately. Love the Jenni Bowlin mini-alphas.
Be sure to check out the Hip Blog for more inspiration.

Hip 2-b Square sneak peeks :)

I've been working slowly but surely on the December Hip 2-b Square kit.
Thought I'd share a couple of sneak peeks with you . . .
(BTW--I totally meant to not center the buttons on the stars. I know, crazy for linear-me.)

Just a little pleating, flower, and buttons :)
You can see all of the contents of the December Hip kit HERE.

Norwegian Krumkakes

For a school heritage project, Krish researched the country of Norway. He made a poster with information about Norway. Then he had to do a presentaion of the information in class. For presentations, students are welcome to bring in items from the country they researched, relatives, or snacks. Krish decided snacks would be a good idea. Luckily, the mom of two of my piano students is from Norway. I emailed her and she sent me some recipes, along with the offer to use her Norwegian baking tools. I decided to make Krumkakes. They are kind of like thin pancakes but as they cool they harden, so as soon as they are taken off the baker they must be wrapped around a cone-shaped tool. This is what they look like when finished.

Two things Lisa-Britt said I needed to make the Krumkakes--a Krumkake baker and cardamon. At first I was a little intimidated to use it, especially since I had borrowed the tool. But it turned out to be quite fun and easier (despite a burnt thumb). The pattern on the Krumkakes is so pretty. The kids in Krish's class ooohhh and aaahhh over it. I think I'll put this Krumkake baker on my Mother's Day wish list :)
Sometimes I make snacks for school and some of the students don't eat theirs. But not the Krumkakes--all of the students ate them up and several asked for the recipe. I just used the recipe that came with the baker booklet. Lisa-Britt said they just eat them as is, like a cookie. They can also be filled with whipped cream and berries, or pudding, or I'm thinking ice cream :)

Have you had Krumkakes before? Is there a particular treat from another country, or part of your heritage, that you enjoy?

Have a wonderful day! It snowed here last night with lots of wind so no school today for the kids. Hooray!

Squash Soup

Today is my day to post on the Polka Dot Whimsy blog. Friday PDW posts are a Free For All--that left it wide open for me to post on whatever :)

I love finding recipes that use fresh produce and that my kids will eat. My creating time happens in little snippets throughout the day. It is great to have a recipe that has steps with breaks in-between, leaving me time to create while I cook (LOL).

We had a butternut squash and two acorn squash from our produce delivery last week. It has been cold and rainy here. I found this Butternut and Acorn Squash Soup recipe on AllRecipes.com that is super easy and delicious! I pretty much kept the recipe as is, but added the extra acorn squash and a little extra broth.

•1 butternut squash, halved and seeded
•1 acorn squash, halved and seeded
•3 tablespoons butter
•1/4 cup chopped sweet onion
•1 quart chicken broth
•1/3 cup packed brown sugar
•1 (8 ounce) package cream cheese, softened
•1/2 teaspoon ground black pepper
•ground cinnamon to taste (optional)
•fresh parsley, for garnish

Directions

1.Preheat oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C). Place the squash halves cut side down in a baking dish. Bake 45 minutes, or until tender. Remove from heat, and cool slightly. Scoop the pulp from the skins. Discard skins.

2.Melt the butter in a skillet over medium heat, and saute the onion until tender.

3.In a blender or food processor, blend the squash pulp, onion, broth, brown sugar, cream cheese, pepper, and cinnamon until smooth. This may be done in several batches.

4.Transfer the soup to a pot over medium heat, and cook, stirring occasionally, until heated through. Garnish with parsley, and serve warm.
Be sure to add the bit of parsley on the top--it really does finish it off nicely!

Go roast some squash, scrap while the squash is cooling, blend up the ingredients, then create some more while the soup is warming. Perfect weekend recipe :)
Do you have a favorite recipe? Please share it. Enjoy your weekend!

Scarlet Lime January Kit Projects

Lovely and fun products to work with in January's Scarlet Lime kits!
The Pink Paislee paper was a perfect pattern for this pretty picture of my DD on her Baptism Day. I loved adding the lace, too.

I cut out two of each flower. Then cut out the center and glued just the inside edges to the same whole flower below it. Then I added dimensional adhesive to the outer edges to pop them up. I had to cut out the bees--they were just too lovely to leave on their own :)

Instead of a 2nd layout with the main kit, I made a banner. Surprised? I thought not.
I had wanted to make a banner for Paige after she was in the hospital during Thanksgiving. She said she loves the words Home and Family. The banner didn't get made before she passed away. So when I started putting this one together, at first heading toward a Valentines theme, I realized I could still make one for her. So this is for Paige.

These next two layouts are with the Frugal FAB kit. Seriously, Christy packs so much into these kits. They are such a steal!
I inked over the blue Pink Paislee letters so they weren't so bright. The sparkles still shine!

I love this picture of Krish. The yellow/black/red/blue combo was a great fit to talk about my big boy :)
Be sure to check out all of the inspiration in the Scarlet Lime Design Team gallery. Thanks for stopping by today!

January 2011 PageMaps

I was thrilled when Becky Fleck emailed me about contributing to her January 2011 PageMaps! This is the fourth time I have had this opportunity. Becky's PageMaps and CardMaps are wonderful to use. Here is the PageMap she sent me to use:

I stayed pretty close to the PageMap:
These photos of Merek have been on my "to-do" list since his birthday in October. And I knew I wanted to use the Rockabilly line from Paper Trunk with them because the colors matched so well. This sketch was perfect for using my favorite 7 pics of his expressions. Instead of four embellishments along the bottom, I switched them out for photos.

Be sure to check out the PageMaps for this month, along with the archives. Tons of inspiration! :)

Polka Dot Whimsy January Kit Projects

The Polka Dot Whimsy January Kit City Lights was so FUN to work with! This was my first month playing with one of the PDW kits. Wow--Michelle puts together such a great variety of products! For this first layout, I wanted to scrap this picture of my dad and my nephew. As soon as we got the sneaks for the kit, I knew this picture would go well with the papers. And it was taken in NYC--perfect for the city background paper :)

I hand-cut the big star behind the picture and double-matted the photo to make it stand-out more from the busy background.

The brown polka dot pattern under the vehicle paper is fabric! The punch outs are Cosmo Cricket from like four years ago, but they worked so well! And I loved adding the big sequins (red and brown) for extra shine.

These photos of Merek have been on my "to-scrap" list for awhile, too. Again, perfect for the kit and theme of the papers. I used my "go-to" design of a big circle in the background. I just love circles :)

The receipt page in the kit was a perfect journaling spot!

In addition to layouts, Michelle asks the DT to make a project. The KI Memories calendar grid jumped out at me right away for my project. And Lina, my 9-year-old, just asked me the other day if I  had a calendar for her to use this year. Well, I do now! :)
I matted the calendar grid on the darker orange patterned paper, then placed them inside a 12x12 frame. The numbers are written on the glass with dry-erase ink so she can change them each month.

The big blue flower was premade in our kits. I made the white/blue/yellow flower from some fabric in the kit, and then layered the crocheted flowers with a buttons. The month tags can be changed out by just sliding them in the upper left corner of the frame.

Here are each of the individual month tags. These were a great way to use the fun little doo-dads in the kit.

This bag was sewn from the brown polka dot fabric in the kit (it's on my top layout as well). I attached the bag to the bottom corner of the calendar and it holds all the month tags, plus we'll keep the dry-erase pen in it as well. I added the trim to the top and the butterfly stamp came in our kit, too.

Isn't this such a fun kit? I loved working with it and look forward to what Polka Dot Whimsy has in store for February! Be sure to check out the PDW blog each day this week for inspiration--I'll be posting on Friday :)
