RIP Stan Lee. A fan once told me that they took a couple of my prints to get signed by him at a con and he was like “These are great!” – And that is basically the highpoint of my career.
Stan created the X-Men (along with Jack Kirby, of course). I consider that to be his most important creation.
Stan Lee understood that readers could look at a group comprised entirely of minority characters and see heroes.
In creating the X-Men, Stan made a space to tell the exploits of minority characters. In their own story. Forever.
They weren’t just Very Special Guests used to help Cap & Iron Man explore themes of minority oppresssion and ostracism.
The X-Men were their own institution from issue #1. As if they were there all along. Stan used his amazing gift for characters to humanize The Other, and gave them all a place in his Marvel Universe to be their authentic, uncanny selves…

Everybody, please vote tomorrow. It’s important. But that’s easy for me to say. I live across the street from my polling place. I’m also a cis white man registered to vote in a blue state.
Before we preemptively shake our fists at people who may not vote tomorrow, let’s remember that there has been a vast, long-running, systematic effort to suppress voter turnout in this country:
An effort to make it expensive or bafflingly complicated to register. To relocate polling locations far away from voters. Even to threaten voters with violence. And of course, these obstructions affect underserved communities the most.
SO. Check in with your network. Ask around. Does anyone need a lift to the polls? Does anyone need help keeping an eye on a kid or a cake or whatever while they vote? Would anyone feel safer with a companion? Why not go as a group?
And if you need an assist getting to vote, ask around for help. If you are not comfortable posting a FB update saying “Help! I need a ride,” why not reach out to activist friends and ask if they’d post on your behalf. The right person posting “My friend needs a ride to vote. Any help?” could get you some useful responses.
That’s all I got. I met an old guy (70s?) this weekend and he was emphatic that this was the most important election of his entire life. So, yeah. Please vote. And help others vote if you can.

“Oscar-winning actress Natalie Portman told the crowd at Saturday’s Women’s March in downtown Los Angeles that she experienced what she calls “sexual terrorism” as a 13-year-old after the release of the film The Professional.
Portman described her pride and excitement in releasing the film, only to encounter sexually explicit messages both directed toward her and made about her.
”I excitedly opened my first fan mail to read a rape fantasy that a man had written me,” she recalled. “A countdown was started on my local radio show to my 18th birthday, euphemistically the date that I would be legal to sleep with. Movie reviewers talked about my budding breasts in reviews.”
The experience, she said, changed the way she expressed herself publicly, in order to limit the ways she could be objectified by others.
”I understood very quickly, even as a 13-year-old, that if I were to express myself sexually, I would feel unsafe,” she said. “And that men would feel entitled to discuss and objectify my body to my great discomfort. So I quickly adjusted my behavior. I rejected any role that even had a kissing scene and talked about that choice deliberately in interviews. I emphasized how bookish I was and how serious I was. And I cultivated an elegant way of dressing. I built a reputation for basically being prudish, conservative, nerdy, serious, in an attempt to feel that my body was safe and that my voice would be listened to.”
