Labor Day tradition

We decided to head out to the local mountains yesterday and go apple picking. We had so much fun!

The weather was nice, and the harvest was bountiful! Last year Labor Day was the end of the harvest, but not this year!
And this was our bounty...they taste wonderful!

first day of school

Today they start a new journey with new friends and new teachers.

day 1: home to Brentwood, California

We begin the first leg of our 12 day road trip and we anticipate lots and lots of family fun! We headed up to my mom's house to pick up the girls. They have been there for the last three weeks of their summer. The kids were so happy to see each other after so much time!
This was only minutes after we got there. Logan was so happy to see his big sister and couldn't wait for her to read to him! Emma had super hugs for her brothers, lifting them up off the ground in her excitement! We sure missed the girls!

day 2: Brentwood, California

Cousin time!! The kids played with their cousins today and they do love their cousins!

day 3: Brentwood, California to Mt Shasta, California

Today we headed out for the next leg of our journey, finding us at my uncle's house in the area of Mt Shasta.

The rolling golden hills of Central California's agricultural belt...
...to the beautiful mountain country of Northern California and cloud covered Mt Shasta.

My uncle has all kinds of toys and we all had a great time burning off the energy stored from our drive today! As it turns out, the kids really love kayaking! And the deer come right into my uncle's backyard to feed and that was an amazing sight for my little city kids!

day 4: Mt Shasta, California to Hood River Oregon

While Andy and I packed up our stuff, the kids played on my cousin's trampoline getting out any wiggles they might have stored up after a good night's sleep!

We left my uncle's house this morning to drive up to Hood River, Oregon. And we discovered on our journey today that the girls get really carsick...

And so we decided it was in our best interest to buy some Dramamine!

In fairness to the girls, the roads were full of curves and bends through the mountains of Northern California and Southern Oregon.

Painful boredom after so many hours in the car...

We stopped at a park for lunch in Canyonville, Oregon and this was the drinking fountain.

A very welcome sign after almost 6 hours in the car today! We are staying at Viento State Park tonight in the Columbia River Gorge area.

day 5: Hood River, Oregon

Today we packed up in search of a new campground. Last night the trains ran all night long, blaring horns and everything. None of slept very well! After our day's adventures, hopefully we will find something better!

We started our day at the historic Bonneville Dam and fish hatchery. The Dam was part of the work programs created by President Rooselvelt during the Great Depression.

The dam would create energy for the area, passage through the Cascade Locks was made safer, and the hatchery and fish ladders were built to allow nature to run its course.

Fish ladder from inside and out.

Checking out the trout in the ponds and the release side of the dam.

I like bridges and signs!

We went out onto this point so I could take some photos of Andy kiting and the wind was ripping through here. Emma found entertainment with the wind!

And the main purpose of our trip (aside from fantastic family fun) was to kite. He had an amazing time with the strong, consistent winds. He loves his new kite and has decided that after flying an 8 meter kite for a week, he really doesn't care for his 16 meter anymore (which is what he often flies at home)!
