Engagement Time

It's official.  Our 1st born in the desert is now engaged!  We are so excited for them.
Elan proposed in the South Fork of Provo Canyon, where they had their first date.  He and his parents went on there (on this cold and snowy night) to set up a special little area for them with lights, candles, and some other special memorabilia from their time dating.  He then returned to Provo to take Aubs to dinner, while his parents finished the setup and guarded the area.Thank You Alex & Ann
The RING..... though they had looked at rings together before, he picked this one out on his own. It is beautiful and we look forward to all that lies ahead for these two.  Love you guys!

Gratitude and Love-FHF Mexico

As this short journey comes to an end, our hearts are full of love and gratitude for all those who have played a part in this amazing project.

A big thanks to Ralph & Jared and their  wives, who were enjoying time on the beach in Rocky Point many years ago, when they felt an impression that as an Arizona lawyer and Utah contractor - they could 'do something' to help this struggling community instead of just coming here to vacation.  Their vision, persistence, and hard work have now provided almost 70 family's with permanent housing and created jobs for many others.

Thanks also to our House Captain - Steve Barney and his awesome crew.  We appreciated you sharing Landon with us.  Thanks also to our Corner Captains - Robert Miller & Dave Chase, who kept the house inline and level (for the most part).  Thanks to all those who work behind the scenes purchasing land, supplies, coordinating workers, legalities, logistics, and allowing us this opportunity to come serve alongside so many awesome families.

Day 3 - FHF Casa & Delivery of 2 Homes

Day 3 - Completion of the house!  Today we built the roof and framed the interior rooms all before 2:00pm.  'Many hands make light work' definitely applies to this venture.  It is the hard work and commitment of so many wonderful people, both on and off the job site that makes these home construction projects possible.

After finishing up at our house site, we headed over to a different part of town to be part of the 'Delivery' of 2 homes that had been built by previous groups.  The interior and stucco work had been completed by local workers over the past few months.  That includes all electrical, plumbing, drywall, flooring, tile work, etc. etc.  Now that these homes were complete - we spent Tuesday evening (Day 2) cleaning and furnish one of those 2 homes.

Our family bought mattress pads and comforters for the 3 girls beds as well as the  parents bed.  We also got new towels and bathroom supplies (Brenna zooms in on them in the video above I think) to match the cute rubber ducky shower curtain another family had purchased.  Another family bought a table and sofa, another family filled the cabinets with dishes, glasses, silverware, tupperware, everything a kitchen would need.  It was so crazy to see that all come together so fast.  And NOW was the official 'delivery' of the home to the deserving family that had been chosen to receive it.
It was tender to hear them share their feelings on this process and how much their lives will change by having a house.

I think we were overcome by the excitement and emotions of the 'delivery' that we didn't get many pictures of the completed/furnished house.  A small peak into the parents bedroom

The girls 2 bedrooms.  This family had previously been living in a one room shack made of plywood and cardboard, dirt floor - no bathroom.   And.....no complaints.  A family in our group had taken them dinner Monday night and got to sit with them int heir dirt floor and visit.  These people are extremely humble, not because of the circumstances they live in, they just seem to have a humble aura or humble attitude towards life.  So many lessons learned and so much joy shared and 2 family's lives were changed forever through the generosity, kindness, and hard work of others.

One quick picture before the delivery of this beautiful home :)

Final Fiesta

After 3 days of hard work, we got to enjoy a night together with all 29 of the volunteer families building during these 3 days. It was only then, that I found out that the FHF Board Members would be starting this experience over again the next morning at 6:30 am with close to 30 other families. That means another 4 houses would be built in Puerto Penasco and another 2 given to deserving family's who need a home. I love how it is an ongoing process of service and giving, filling hearts and homes with love and charity.

Day 2 - FHF Casa

Today the interior and exterior walls went from 8 cinder blocks high to 12-14  blocks high.  We worked around the window areas,  placed rebar along the top row of bricks and poured buckets and buckets and buckets of concrete down the blocks to fill them in and tie it all together securely. exterior of the home and  Progress was slower as we need to work from scaffolding or create our own scaffolding from extra cinder blocks and boards fro around the site.  It's really starting to look like a house.

Dinner with Morales Familia

After working on the house today, we were all able to have dinner with a local family here in Puerto Penasco.  We were lucky enough to share the evening with Amilcar Morales and his familia.  We decided to purchase 'American cuisine' for our dinner together, so we brought Little Caesar's pizza, bread sticks, a variety of chips, and sodas.  While some family's sat on dirt floors in cardboard or plywood structures, Amilcar and his family live in a home with walls, electricity, and running water.

As a teenager, Amilcar and his brother were homeless and each lived in their own cardboard box.   He continually expressed his gratitude to God for his well being and the fact that they each had a box to live in.  Though he is now has full time employment and is able to provide a home and food for his familia, his humble spirit is still the same.  He is grateful for all things and recognizes the hand of God in his life everyday.  Families Helping Families hired Amilcar several years ago to help complete the interior of the houses volunteers built.  He is now the head contractor for all of their projects in Mexico.

Amilcar has a wonderful wife, Maria, a 19 year old daughter Lorena, an 8 year old son Jared, and a 9 month old bebe.  His wife's brother and cousins also live with them, but no one in their home speaks Ingles.  In our familia, Robert, Jenna, Aubrey, & Lindsay can all speak and understand 'un poco' Espanol, but it amazing how when you are immersed in it, it just seems to come.  I don't know how to explain it other than that the Lord blesses us with an ability to communicate.  It is definitely a tender mercy.

One of the things Robert and Amilcar were able to share with all of us was their conversion stories - how they were introduced and decided to be baptized into The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints.  This was not at all a topic we thought would emerge in our little dinner together.  I thought we might stick to things like our favorite colors and what we like to do - and hope we could translate it accurately, but being able to communicate much better than we anticipated allowed us to discuss many other topics pertaining to our lives.  Amilcar said he had always believed in God  Two years ago, a FHF leader gave him a Book of Mormon in Spanish and he began to read it.  He believed it to be true, and he and his family were baptized two years ago, with their son Jared being baptized just last month when he turned 8.  Their oldest daughter Lorena is now preparing to serve a mission.  It is so wonderful to see the light and joy the gospel of Jesus Christ brings to individuals and family's.

We had such a fun might with their family and eventually went to the car to get our selfie stick to take some pictures together.  They had such a fun time using it and taking pictures that we left it with them.  A small token of our appreciation for the love and friendship they shared with us.  We are so grateful for the chance we have to built a home for a family here in Mexico, but also for the wonderful people we are able to work with and relationships were are able to form.  Gracias Morales Familia!!!!

Day 1- FHF Casa

Ready to build!  This morning we attended our first safety meeting with all 29 family's participating in this year's Families Helping Families house building projects in Puerto Penasco, Mexico.  We placed in groups of 7-8 families and given our house location.  The family's in our group come from AZ, UT, & CO.  Atleast 3 families on our site, and probably 10 family's overall live with 20 miles of our home in South Jordan and we have found that we have several common friends.

Once on site, we received some basic instructions on how to lay block and the layout of our house from our 'house captain' Steve Barney.  He assigned 4 men to be 'corner captains' ....and off we went.  This video shows the amazing progress that happened as we mudded up cinder blocks with mortar and began to build.  By the time we left the house site on this first day, the 4 outer walls, as well as the middle interior walls , were 8 blocks high.  Even we were surprised how much 'we as a group' accomplished in those 7 hours together.

Christmas Day Community Feed

We began this special Christmas Day by attending church services at the local Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints.  It is always nice to attend a service in different places around the world and in different languages.  The services are the same, with the focus on our Savior Jesus Christ and the opportunity we each have to renew our covenants by partaking of the sacrament. After the emblems of the sacrament were administered, there were two musical numbers and two talks in Spanish as well as a short message from the stake president. Even though we could not understand many of the words that were shared, we definitely could feel the Spirit and were strengthened as we worshiped alongside our brothers and sisters.

That afternoon we prepared turkey's and ham's to share with those of the San Rafael community.  A generous donor also provided 1,000 tamales and large pots of rice y frijoles.

A large tent was set up to accommodate about 500 people, but the crowd exceeded that number and filled additional tables outside the tent.  After a fun program filled with skits, songs, and topped off by a visit from Santa, it was time to EAT.  We served up tamales and beans from the kitchen....

then added turkey, ham, and rolls in the covered pavillion.....
and deliver full plates of food to each person individually.
Served and Received with a Smile.  What a wonderful way to feel and share the love of our Savior, whose birth and life we celebrate in this special day.   #LightTheWorld

Arizona Adventures

Who knew that my Arizona Adventures would kick off with a chance to see Robert?!  He had flown into Phoenix Sunday night for work and I flew in Thursday morning, but we didn't know if the stars would align and our paths would cross.  They did!  My sister Ally got to meet some of his co-workers and see the Phoenix office.  But seeing Robert was the best!

Then it was off to pick up the wedding cake.  A little stressful to be driving with someone's wedding cake up against your suitcases in the back seat.  Luckily Brenna kept it safe during the ride home

Off to find more frames and markers fro the bride

Then off to the Bloomer Farm.  I never would have thought my sister Ally would live in a farm, but she does and she does it well.

2 cows, 2 pigs, 2 goats, 2 dogs, and lots of chickens

Along with Tariah's basketball games, we also got to attend Jayden's Winter Choir Concert and hang with the other girls.  Lots of adventures for us.....and we haven't even gotten to the Wedding!

Tariah's games

While in Arizona, Brenna and I got to hangout with Grandpa, Ally, Jayden, Kyana, and Saybria at Tariah's basketball games.  She had quite the fan club cheering her on from the stands.

Tariah (#20)  plays for Red Mountain High School and this game was against Dobson.  She has a beautiful shot, works hard, and has a lot of natural talent that helps her be a great team player.

So glad we got to catch 2 of her games during our short little visit.  Great job T!

One final 'dab' from the cheering section.

Such a Treat

It is always such a treat to watch this girl dance.  Papa and Grandma Miller traveled from Los Angeles this week, to see her perform in both her SoJo Dance Company performance as well as tonight's ballet performance.  So glad they could be here for a few days and visit with us. I think they are amazed each and every time they visit, how much these girls are growing. maturing, and blossoming.  It is one of our greatest joys as parents to see them become women and young women who are so hard working, kind hearted, and share their light and love with others.
A big thanks to Papa and Grandma for topping off this special night with ginormous ice cream treats from Leatherby's.  We sure love and appreciate you!

Ballet Dec 2016

Rachael's Shower

Today we got to celebrate Rachael's upcoming wedding.  Katie (& Nathan & Logan) did a great job decorating and putting it all together.

We love that the boys decided to hang out with us for while.
See you in 2 weeks for Rachael & Jacob's wedding in the Mesa Temple.
