Moving to Alpine

It's Moving Day again for Aubs and Elan.  When they got married they moved from their own apartments to Cambridge Court, which is married housing right by campus.  From there, they moved to Edmond, Oklahoma for a summer sales job.   In early June they got a call about a job offer here in Utah that would start at the end of the month.  Two weeks later, they packed up all their stuff, said goodbye to their Oklahoma friends and ward, and drove back to Utah and moved into Elan's parents basement.  And today, Lindsay and I helped them move from that basement into a basement apartment in Alpine, UT.  Their new home for the next while.

It is so beautiful here, right at the base of the Wasatch Mountains and American Fork Canyon.
A little history about the unexpected events that brought them here.
This is the home of Jerry & Kristine Jensen, a wonderful couple who raised their family here in Alpine.  Jerry is a Physical Therapist and owns Dry Creek Physical Therapy.  In 2010, he and his wife served a mission for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints in Denmark.  Again in 2016, they were called to serve another mission in the Philippines.  After being trained in the Missionary Training Center in Provo, they returned home just prior to their plane departure for the Philippines.  It was early November, and Jerry noticed some leaves in the rain gutters. Not wanting to leave that task to others, he thought he better clean those out before leaving the house for 3 years.  He quickly grabbed a ladder and got to work.  As he was working, the ladder fell, and Jerry likewise fell to the ground. He was rushed to the hospital by ambulance where they learned he had broken his back and several crucial vertebrae in his neck.
Jerry was now paralyzed from the waist down.
Life changed quickly for Jerry and his family.  Their son, who is also a physical therapist, began taking care of him.  He and his family had planned to live in the house during his parent's mission but now moved out to Lehi.  Their youngest son and his wife remained in the basement apratment to also help with daily tasks and things Kristine and Jerry needed help with, but in July, they would be leaving to start medical school in Louisiana.
Elan had swam with one of Jerry's son years ago, and more recently had decided he wanted to be a Physical Therapist, and Jerry had given him some opportunities to shadow therapists in his clinics.  In early June, Jerry and Kristine called Elan and Aubrey about possibly moving into their basement apartment to care for Jerry in the morning hours Monday-Friday and help keep up on the yard and house maintenance.   They spent the weekend praying and fasting about it, and Sunday evening they decided to take this opportunity and move back to Utah early.  The next day, Elan was the top salesman in the company with a  record # of sales and great commission payouts.  They were glad they had made the decision to move the evening before, and decided they were willing to forego some immediate financial benefits for long term experience and the opportunity to live with and care for Jerry and Kristine.  Now, a few weeks later, it's Move In Day!

Lindsay and I helped Aubrey move from Elan's parents to Alpine while Elan took Jerry to his daily therapy appointments.  We were able to meet their son and daughter-in-law that had been living here and were now headed off to medical school.  The first thing we noticed about their home was the amazing spirit we felt there.  It was almost tangible, a sense of love and goodness in that house.  I felt so much joy and gratitude that Aubs and Elan could live in such a wonderful place.  This will be such a great place for them to learn and grow together as they serve Jerry and Kristine.

Lego Temple

Brenna loves Lego and Brenna loves temples.  She never had an actual 'temple' lego set, but she loves to make them on her own.
White temple, gold angel Moroni, water feature, lots of grass and flowers, all the characteristics of a modern day temple.

Menchies

Brenna loves Menchies.  She loves choosing a frozen yogurt flavor and layering it with so many yummy and colorful toppings that you can no longer see the yogurt.  She also loves spending time, just she and Mom.  Bonus Day for Brenna

Visiting with Schmitt's

Monday afternoon we met up with the Schmitt's at Pacific Beach.  David was great to take each of the girls individually and help them surf on one of his boards, while the other's body surfed with Robert and John.

I snapped a few pics...but not many.

At some point, my phone must have switched to selfie mode, as most of the pics were of Alexis and I talking on the beach.  So sorry surfer girls.

Clayton hanging out in a beach chair.  It was a beautiful day in San Diego, as usual, and we are grateful we got to visit with our friends before they finish their mission and head to Arizona.

For dinner we hit up the Taco Surf Taco Shop there in Pacific Beach.  Brenna was in heaven eating in a restaurant in her bathing suit.

We couldn't have asked for a better way to end our San Diego trip than hanging out with the Schmitt's.  We have such love and admiration for this family.  They are great examples of Christ-like love and service and how to be a true disciple of Him in these latter days.  They have blessed and influenced so many lives for good during their time here in San Diego, and we are grateful to be recipients of their kindness and charity.   Love you guys!

Mission Bay

Monday morning we got up and headed to Mission Bay to explore the area on bikes.  We started on the boardwalk, worked our way over to Sea world, and all around the bay.

We stopped for drinks, weddings, cute dogs, and to soak int he sun and views.

We sometimes road with no feet, no hands, but mostly with our eyes open.

By the time we made it back to the Boardwalk, we had biked 22 miles.  Maybe a little farther than we had anticipated going when we left, but it was fun to be out there riding together.

Father's Day

It was a special bonus to be in San Diego for Father's Day, as Robert's parents were able to meet us in Dana Point for lunch after church.  After enjoying the ocean breeze and wandering up and down a few blocks just off the boardwalk, we found a fun restaurant to eat at.

With it being late afternoon, Emily was disappointed to learn from the waiter that the breakfast menu (aka FrenchToast) was no longer available.  She had so been craving french toast.  But as she perused the menu, she was ecstatic to find a gourmet french toast with ice cream in the Dessert Section,   With a smile and a wink, she placed her lunch/dessert order and you can see her joy when her entree arrived.  It was so nice to visit and catch up.  We have great love and respect for Dan and Francee and the life and family they have created together.

Happy Father's Day Robert & Dan!

La Jolla Tide Pools

We Love the La Jolla Tide Pools, maybe because we have a few girls who LOVE crabs and other creepy crawly sea life.  We can seriously spend hours here roaming around and looking at all the little tides.  I enjoy sitting on the rocks watching the tide go out and soaking in the ocean breeze.  It is all so fascinating to me.  The girls love the sea life - today we saw zillions of crabs, a few lobsters, fish, and 30-40 sea lions

With those sea lions snoozing, the girls got way up close to check them out

A little unexpected wave action to cool them off
We couldn't be in La Jolla without a stop to our favorite Taco Stand.  Hands down the BEST carne asada fries and some really good tacos as well.  We have no problem standing in a line that usually extends down Pearl street to get our SoCal  'carne asada' fix.

La Jolla Part 2

Yes, we are still in La Jolla - We LOVE it here!  After time at the tide pools and beach, be moved inland for  some more favorites.
DUKE's - You know you're in paradise when you find a Duke's

and their infamous Hula Pie -worth clicking on the link http://www.dukeswaikiki.com/hula-pie

It felt like we were back in Hawaii, which is not a bad thing at all.

We also spent quite a bit of time exploring art museums and almost came home with a most magnificent picture of the La Jolla Pier.  It was breathtakingly beautiful and there was so much we loved about it, but in the end we kept our budget in tact and will have to go back often to visit that beautiful gallery.
This is not the piece, but another one from the same collection.  My phone camera doesn't do it much justice, but we were able to visit with the photographer and learn so much about his work and techniques for capture these photos that actually change with the sunlight in your home to have a sun rise and sunset within the picture each day.  So fascinating to learn about and so awesome to experience.  Maybe one day......

We also visited a gallery devoted to Dr. Suess original artwork.  The curator taught us all about his life and meaning behind some of his caricatures and the role that his widow, a most colorful and eccentric women, to put it lightly,  still plays in the gallery.  Aubrey would be so proud that we used some of our vacation time to visit art gallery's.  She must be rubbing off on us.

And the crown jewel of La Jolla, the Temple (click on link) http://ldschurchtemples.org/sandiego/.
We look forward to coming here again next summer to participate in Baptisms with all of the girls, as Brenna will be 12.  We definitely have a love for the beautiful city of La Jolla.

Time with Jeannette

Being in San Diego for the weekend gave us several opportunities to visit with Jeannette (and her cat Jazzy) We got to play pool, watch a movie in the theatre room, eat, work on family history,  look through pictures, and visit together.
We love being with Jeannette and wish we lived closer so we could visit more often

We finished off the weekend with a special Father's Day dinner in the dining room.

Beach Time

It has been a long few weeks/month and we were all ready for a break and some much needed beach time together.  The only Marriott that had room with such short notice, was in Solano Beach.  Perfect.

Oakcrest

Oakcrest (click on link to learn more) is a church run summer camp for girls between 7th and 8th grade.  The camp is located up in Kamas, beyond Park City and Heber, and can fit several hundred girls each week.  Congregational leaders, like Robert, are invited to visit the girls in their congregations on a specific night the week that they are at Oakcrest.  This year we had one girl from our ward.
We were able to bring up a letter from her parents and all the supplies to make killer
'donut ice cream sundaes'  (Robert like to get in as many calories as possible with his signature sundaes).  It was fun to visit and hear about all the activities she'd been participating in and things she had learned and felt during her time in the mountains.   So grateful for the opportunities we have to learn and grow alongside our youth. Love you Brooke!

Kay & Elder Holland

One of my favorite things about this blog is being able to look back at past experiences and remember the feelings those memories invoke.  This picture recently came up as a memory in my photos and gave me a chance to look back at that original post.  Click on link to view:
It really was a tender mercy for this tired 13-year old, who stepped out of her comfort zone to run an additional relay leg for someone who wasn't feeling well, and then meet Elder Holland during that leg.    Kay was not always very flexible, didn't like the unknown, or coming across situations or experiences she hadn't planned for.  This taught her that life doesn't always go the way we plan, but we can still go forward in faith, trust that the Lord is mindful of us individually,  and recognize the tender mercies He places along our path.
