the retro circus party

i realized that throwing a birthday party for sage would be more for me than her. frankly, her dream party would include cords, shoes, paper, and kitchen utensils, with the main event being unfolding stacks of fresh laundry.

instead, i decided on a retro circus party in my parents' backyard. it was a running joke in my family in the weeks leading up to this silly party i wanted to throw..."oh, jessica's RETRO circus party..." but my mom was so cute and helped me pull it together. okay, she ended up doing almost everything. anything i'm good at, my mom is ten times better at (thanks, mama).

my summery garden party quickly turned into 50 degree weather, so socks, shoes, leggings, and sweaters got added to sage's party outfit. boo.

we grilled burgers, had a bazooka bubble gum blowing contest, launched rocket balloons, snacked on roasted peanuts, neccos, barnum's animal crackers, caramel corn, salt water taffy, and other retro goodness with aunts, uncles, grandparents, and cousins.

...and then the birthday girl was partied out.

i carry your heart with me

i was 99% positive i was having a boy, though i didn't tell many people that. i liked the idea of having an older brother as the leader and protector.
and then it wasn't a boy, but a happy, squishy, almost ten pound baby girl.
and i love that i have a daughter first.
i love that she will always be my travel buddy and my friend.
being entrusted with this sweet little girl has changed me, as i'm sure becoming a parent changes most people. i read my favorite e.e. cummings poem one night after i put a jet-lagged, whining baby to bed, and i couldn't help but go peek in on her as she slept so peacefully.
because really, anywhere i go you go, my dear; and whatever is done by only me is your doing, my darling.
she has brought so much joy in a year.
we get a kick out of even the littlest things she does...when she tilts her head to the side on command, when she looks at us with serious eyes and babbles like we know exactly what she's saying, when her eyes become squinty from grinning so wide
and hey, we kept a baby alive for a whole year!
i know there's an abundance of pictures, but you only turn one once.

the big intro

and by big intro, i mean nate's much anticipated event of taking sage to her first ball game...and to a DODGERS game no less.

the stars aligned, and the mariners happened to play nate's team while we were in town. i always forget that june in seattle does not mean summer at all. so we bundled up and took uncle chan along to the game. nate was so jetlagged that he fell asleep in the middle of an inning. we even videoed his head nodding, but i'll spare him the embarrassment. what kind of baseball fan is that? we had a great time though.
sage can look forward to many more baseball games with her dad...

the graduate

the last one graduated!
nate had to be in chicago for meetings (i'm kind of jealous),
so he missed out on watching my not-so-little sister graduate at safeco field in seattle.
we celebrated with incredible butternut squash enchiladas and bananas foster at cactus.
so proud of beautiful steph...

it was a group effort to keep sage entertained. graduations and busy babies don't mix.
sage kept pulling the bra strap hanging out of the lady's dress in front of us, or tossing anything we gave her into the crowd. good thing she grinned at those people or i'm sure we would've gotten some strong words.

utahhhh

it was a lawler party in salt lake city for a few days. jordan and britton just moved to downtown SLC and let us take over their apartment. nate's other sisters, mckenna and madison, also came to town to see their favorite (okay...only) niece. nate's dad even got to see sage for a few hours too.
we ate at kneader's twice, walked all over city creek, shopped, and played games.
sage even got to open some early birthday presents. she better soak up this being the only niece thing as long as she can!
it was fun to be all together.

we also went to my cousin's baby shower, saw our singapore friend jane, and spent time with my side of the family too. going to utah is fun, but stressful sometimes to fit everything and everyone in! i wish i had more time. i'm glad we'll always have an excuse to come back here.

hitched

i love weddings. like, really love.
two of my dear friends happened to get married a week apart. perfect for me! i was so happy to get to be at both weddings. i flew with my mom, brother, and the babe to utah first for beautiful jeanette's wedding. she was such a stunning bride. and my favorite part about weddings is that everyone else comes too...so i got to see molly!

my sweet cousin bridgette
wish i'd taken more photos of the cousins, aunts, uncles, and old friends i got to see.
it was so fun to introduce sage to all of them.

sage was totally digging the straws. and grass! she was fascinated with the grass...something we rarely see here in downtown singapore.

whitney's wedding was a week later back in seattle, and nate got to come too.

another beautiful bride.
forever ago, when i thought i'd have 12 kids and had their names picked out, whit told me she wanted a navy blue and white wedding. this girl stuck to her guns!
i spent a lot of time with these two in high school.
after seeing so many friends and relatives, i felt so old.
i'm that girl now...the one who can say "i used to babysit you!" to the awkward teenagers.
times flies.
