Ephesians 6:12

Two years ago we took Sweet Pea trick or treating for the first time. As Christian parents we wanted to raise our son in the world and not of it. Therefore our rule was only nice Halloween costumes and so we went to our families neighborhood and went "golf cart" trick or treating in style with our little 18 mo. old boy dressed as a jack-o-lantern. We walked him up to doors, taught him to say "trick or treat" and sometimes we walked him up to doors with "elaborate" decor. He had a fun time and enjoyed his candy. We thought to ourselves, "what a perfect Halloween. Driving a golf cart from home to home, told by all what an adorable little boy, and wow he got the BEST candy ever."..you know the good big candy."

And so his first official Halloween came to an end..fast forward a year latter. A 2.5 yr old and 7 month old a few days before Halloween we are all ready to go out again in style like the year before. And then suddenly, in such a way only God can, we started learning through word of mouth, emails, and Internet searches the orgins of Halloween. After learning the true meaning and searching through scripture we could find no peace in participating any longer. We don't carry any judgement or criticism with ourselves for our past ignorance to the truth of that day, all of our past is washed in the blood of Jesus and we are so thankful for His leading and opening our hearts and minds to hearing and receiving His word. (Leviticus 18:30, Deut 18:9, Col 3:2) And because God is only good and perfect we were presented with an opportunity to go to a fall festival. A safe place no symbols of Halloween or talk of it. Only the Love of Christ, Lots of candy, toys, games, trains, animals and bounce houses and so much more.( Our little Sweet pea wore his costume and had a blast...it was officially more perfect than the year before. So this year Sweet Pea is now 3 and of course watching cartoons and has a sharp mind and is picking up on the world around him. We had an opportunity to go to another churches celebration this year before our own. It was hard. We felt deceived when we arrived. (obviously by the enemy not people) Most of the trunks were filled with gross images of Halloween. In fact there were only 2 cars out of about 30 that we would allow our kids to walk up too. My heart hurt. This was at a church in and on church property. Not judging anyone or the church at all. I was just reminded of how I once walked in darkness..I didn't know any better ( Ephesians 2 :1-8). I try to imagine Christ with me and standing there in that parking lot looking at these same images and I can't imagine Him saying..."It's o.k as long as you are dressed in nice costumes to participate....or encourage this by taking part."(Ephe 6:12,Matthew 21:13) And so it ended we went home, and thankful that God used this as a teachable moment in my life as a parent. A few days later we had our fall fest. I'll write all about it in the next post. Of course it was so fun and perfect.

Now that Sweet Pea 3 and is watching cartoons and they are all Halloween themed it seems now. The day of our fall fest I told him all about the fun activities we would be doing and he added and "trick or treat?" and that is when it hit me I needed to be diligent in what was going on in his cartoons. For the most part we are very diligent in this area however it is so hard at times for us because We (me and hubby) are so desensitized to the theme of Halloween that I just completely missed this aspect. And so the next morning if a Halloween themed show came on I had to switch to another program. Let me just say meltdown, meltdown, meltdown from an otherwise very well behaved little boy. Sitting there listing to the screams I asked the Lord, "What do I do? He has no idea why his mommy just turned off his favorite show." Then I just felt like the Lord say this was a teachable moment. Ok I thought, "I am not to confident in what or how he will begin to understand this." It didn't matter, I was just to be obedient to Gods guiding and from there I knew he could fill in the gaps of understanding in my 3 yr old. So I put him in my lap and said, " Sweet Pea this show is talking about Halloween and things we do not participate in. Mommy is changing the channel so you can watch another show that is not talking about Halloween or trick or treating. It is not forever, you will get to watch your show again when they are not talking about such things." And just like that he was fine and enjoyed the alternative to his fav show.(Deut 6) Now this does require some work on my part, flipping around to different stations finding one that was not talking about Halloween.(prov 21:5, eph 4:3) Again God was so good to always provide an alternative. Today we went through the routine again and the first time he started to meltdown and so I sat down with him and reviewed what we talked bout the day before and that was good enough for him, just fine no meltdowns. I realized something along with many things one of the things he is starting to learn is self discipline. If he sees the content come on he is learning not to watch it....find another alternative...master it. It is hard to be a diligent parent in this area. Just walking through the community both children will see Halloween decor and say "what is that?" or in Cupcake words, "Dat?" My first response a few weeks back was one word and I left it at that, "Yucky" Now when they see this gross decor ( And I do emphasize the word gross...elaborate depictions of horror movies in peoples front yard..out of control decor) So now as we pass by the kids say, "that's yucky mommy." My goal is not that the kids would say this every time, but that they would give the decor no attention. And so the teachable moments continue. After they comment on the decor I remind them to give them no attention.

So the real adventure now is what do we do in place of Halloween? We want to start traditions now so by the time they get older they will not feel cheated...and I know they will not because this has been a God journey. Here is what we have decided, our work in progress. Our fall fest is The big replacement. Each kid gets a new fall outfit (yea they are kids I am sure they will be real excited about a new sweater and pants) and or if they want to dress up for fall fest in costume that is just fine with us. With all the activities of the fest it would be hard to ride the rides in costume so that is the only reason I didn't get a fall fest costume for them this year. In addition to the fact that I am such a "practical" person, I thought well this they can where all season...this they will only where for a few hours.

So then what do we do Halloween night? The night all their friends will be out trick or treating. A few ideas we are kicking around and hope to have perfected for next year. A massive Thanksgiving type diner or a special pizza, hot dog, nacho sncaky type night and lots of family fun. Either way this year we have told the kids we are having a party. The nice thing to a 3 yr old "party" means a cake or something with sprinkles on it...:)

( 1 John 4:1-6), eph 5:11) Do your own research and ask the Lord what He would like you to do.
Put on your armor ( Ephesians 6:13-18)
girded your loins with truth
breastplate of righteousness
feet of peace

Cupcake's first haircut!

At 17 months Cupcake finally go her first haircut! Curly hair has its ups and downs. On the upside you can always put a bow in it and it always looks good. On the down side I have no clue how to manage Cupcakes hair. And how do you know when to cut curly hair?! Aggh! So many questions. After a brief lesson on Curly hair, most of my fears have disappeared.

What Cupcake is doing at 18 months
still riding rear facing in her car seat. (safest way to travel)
Singing her ABC's
counting to 10
Sings Veggie tales songs
Words - all of them she will try to say everything!
she enjoys playing with mommy's bracelets, rings, purses, shoes and necklaces
her favorite pair of shoes are now her "boootttts"
"Read book" is her favorite activity
"Hop n Pop" is her favorite book (Hop on Pop and like her brother she has most of the book memorized)
"Pokey Pokey" is her favorite dance (Hokey Pokey)

her pacifier is named "that one"
her blanket is named "meme"

Cupcakes memorized Bible versus:
"We will listen and obey"
"God is always with me."

Happy Birthday Sweet Pea - 3

It is a little late I know..
Sweet Pea celebrated his 3rd birthday in style with all his best little buds and budetts at "the bounce place." Despite the one casualty (myself) everyone had a wonderful time..adults included. The kids enjoyed the running, jumping, and climbing..while the adults enjoyed being kids!
About 20 minutes into the 2hr party I was enjoying the obstacle course..just off from a great win over Uncle E, Aunt S decided to take me on. Ok so the race if on! 3 steps into the obstacle course I take a leap only to roll my foot and hear a "pop" not much pain didn't think much of it I attempt to take another step..and there it is the pain as I fall to the ground. Stuck in an inflatable maze I manage to climb over the side and hop on leg style to a chair. At first I was challenged with "faking" the injury..but as my foot became larger I knew something serious had happened. Like any devoted mother I stayed at the party..after all the party must go on.. 3 hours later I found myself in the emergency room with a broken fifth metatarsal, sprained ankle and torn ligaments...little excited about the possibility of getting crutches and a cast! No cast just a giant boot and crutches...that lasted a few days! Ouch and no fun! I hope I never need them again!

Staycation 2009

This year we opted to try the much talked about staycation. L and I are just not ready to pack the kids into the car and drive someplace...that just did not sound relaxing to us. So while they are young we decided to do all the fun things in the area. The most important thing is family time and memories....well we may have to tell them about these memories, not sure if they will remember. Monday we spent the day at the Aquarium. The kids loved that and much to our surprise they wanted to walk the entire way and did great. Note about the picture - they don't look to happy because they were a little grumpy on the drive to the aquarium but Praise the Lord they left that in the parking lot..whew we were worried and they had a blast with lots of smiles and laughs!

Tuesday we went to McDonald's for Lunch and then to a movie. This was a fun adventure. At McDonald's while L was ordering our food I was with the kids in the play center. Watching Sweet Pea climb to the top and work his way through the tube maze to find the slide and then do it all over again. Cupcake normally stays on the little slide and has always wanted to climb with Sweet Pea but she has been to short to reach the steps. Before I knew it Cupcake had climbed to the top! Oh no I thought I would have to go in after her...she had no clue what she was doing and might start freaking out a little. As I was trying to talk Cupcake down a sweet little girl about 7 asked if she could watch her and help her climb through the maze of tubes way over our heads. I said that would be great! Relieved and thankful, because Sweet Pea just ignored my request to help Cupcake and continued to fly through the maze and slide. I guess technically if you follow the playground rules he shouldn't be up there but he has been climbing on them since he was about 20 months so I wasn't to worried about him. Cupcake and a few older girls played in the tubes and climbers for another 15 minutes and she had a blast playing with the older girls. When it was time to eat Daddy did finally climb up half way to bring her down....but that is because she did not want to leave her new found friends.

The movie was interesting. This was Sweet Peas third trip to the movies. He went at 1 - a family night work event and did great, 2 - we took him for his second Birthday, and then now - he did great as expected, at times he wanted to know whey Cupcake did not have to sit down, but in all he enjoyed it a lot. Cupcake on the other hand was sooo bored after about 2o minutes and needed to move. After a while L and I had to start taking turns leaving the theater with her so she could walk. Eventually she feel asleep in daddy's arms as the movie was ending. Movies are not her thing.

Wednesday was L's birthday so we spent the day together while Nana and Papa watched the little ones. We enjoyed a nice round of golf at Top Golf. Loved this place. I am not a golfer but with all the fun games you can play this place rocked! I was a little worried. It has been a long time since I have attempted to swing a golf club and I lack the hand eye coordination..a good reason why I was a swimmer. So I step up to take a few practice swings and wow they were bad! I would have missed a soccer ball that is how bad I was. Then L grabbed a near by ball and said practice with this one. I swung and it went about 2 inches in front of me. No I am secretly grumbling on the inside but trying to act like this is fun because it is L's birthday. So he is trying not to laugh at me at this point. I just decided lets get this over with, so I grab one of my microchip golf balls, take a swing and whoop I made contact! The computer read 158 yards!!! that was my longest drive of the day the remainder stayed about 128, but for me that is awesome. I was proud of my bad self! L of course did great hitting them to the edge of the fence 200+ yards but during the game portion I did really good. Totally recommend Top Golf it was a blast!

After Golf we went to PF Changs for lunch and then to our hotel. We stayed at the Adolphus. It was fun when we were driving up there were a lot of drivers who did not know what they were doing or where they were going...sorry to admit this but this darn pink caddy kept blocking the entrance to the hotel so we missed it the first time. That was a pain because it is all one way streets around the Adolphus so it took 5 minutes to get us back again and still there was another or the same pink caddy blocking the entrance so we and the 3 cars behind us had to cut her off to get into the hotel. We found out at check-in there was a massive Mary Kay convention in Dallas and all the hotels were sold out. We were so excited we did get an upgraded sweet that was huge! They also treated us to a bottle of champagne, an early check-in time (didn't know this) and a late 4:00 check out time, that was great! We had dinner at the French room. Much to our surprise it really is a room..not that big...but wonderfully decorated and the food was great!

Thursday after check out we had a good "linner" (lunch+dinner) at Chewy's and then Movie (transformers 2). I was secretly sooo excited that Star Trek was no longer showing at the theater!

Friday was family pool day- we spent the day at the pool with the kids

Saturday - we visited with family that had traveled into town and did our " July Birthday bash" celebrated all the July B-days, Dad, L, sister and Sweet Pea.

Sunday - another family birthday with L and his family.

We had a great time relaxing and spending time together!

Sweet Pea speaks Cupcake

I have been banished to the couch sick with a fever so Daddy is taking care of the little squirts. Daddy has just put some lunch on the table. Cupcake is really whining "agggggh aggggh" is the sound she is making. I have no clue what she wants...so I can't help Daddy. I guess the whining got on Sweet Peas nerve's because he just said, "Cupcake wants a spoon Daddy, Cupcake wants a spoon!" At this point Daddy will try anything...and I want him too...he gets up grabs a spoon, hands it to Cupcake. She politely says, "thin tu" (thank you) and quietly begins to eat her food. No more whining! It hurts to laugh...but I am laughing and so is Daddy. I said, "I guess he speaks Cupcake." and now Sweat Pea is constantly repeating this phrase, " I speak Cupcake Daddy, I speak Cupcake Daddy!"

ok I am back and blogging again!

A beautiful special moment between father and son. By the look on Sweet Pea's face I think it clear that he has the most amazing dad in the whole world. The dad who always relishes his family time. The two of them enjoy watching sports together, playing baseball, soccer and wrestling.

Sweet Pea is going through what I hope is a unique and short stage....getting up at 5 am and sometimes 2 am....ready to start the day! Last week we...sorry L woke up at 5 am to a rummaging sound. L jumped out of bed startled to find Sweet Pea in the kitchen...in the dark..with the fridge open...and emptied onto the floor...looking and asking for some milk! He is trying to be so independent, thankfully it was only the bottom half that he could reach. When he was getting up at 2, 3, 4, and 5 am I finally came up with something that would only work for Sweet Pea, we told him he could only get out of bed when it was light outside..so far it is working...can't wait till winter...it seems to get light around 6 am...and that has become the normal get up time! I guess I can't complain to much since Sweet Pea and Dad get some boy time together and morning sports center. It so cute. We just can't believe how fast he is growing up. Every morning Sweet pea gets out of bed..climbs down his bunk (little bunk)..goes to the bathroom takes off his overnight...goes potty and comes down stairs to our bed side to announce "Sweet Pea's awake!" with a giant smile on his little face! If I could only find a way to wake up with that much energy! Oh and if we don't get up fast enough he is quick to inform us " It's light outside."

Cupcake is such a girly-girl. She enjoys waring my braclets, shoes and if any article of clothing is left on the floor..she puts it on. Just this last week when Memaw and Aunt where visiting Cupcake found her swimsutie in the (clean...just folded..but messed up all the clothes to pull the suite out) laundry pile and put it on...over her skirt and was very satisfied walking around the house like that. She loves carrying her purses and mommies purses around the house too. We think Sunday is her favorite day because she gets to put on her best dress, sqeeker shoes, pearl bracelet, bow, purse and pull her cute diaper suitcase behind her. She is so independant just like her brother. On Sunday's she walks in church to her class room pulling the bag behind her..while holding her purse and shoes.."squeek, squeek" doen the hall. Everyone laughs.."here comes cupcake!" Her curly hair! We think it came from Memaw...now I am left trying to figure out how to style it...oh wait...put a bow in it and call it done..this is awesome!

Updates - creative I know

A few weeks ago we were enjoying play time out doors. I was enjoying the warm weather, sun and a good read when I looked up and found my little Cupcake half way up the ladder! She was so proud of her little self and so was mommy and Sweet pea. Then she went down the slide all by her little self! ( I had to run inside and grab a camera and wait for her to do it again !)

at 13 months cupcake has added:

Thank you - "Tin tou"

and when Sweet pea sings "Jesus loves me" and "ABC's" she sings with him! We can't make out the words but we can hear the tune.

She knows "nose" and "ears" and where to find them

when we say "pray" she folds her hands to pray

For her birthday gift we finally made it to the American Girl store and picked out her first doll. Daddy stayed in the car so Sweet pea could finish his nap, while Cupcake and mommy enjoyed their time in the store. The moment we walked in Cupcake started shouting, "Baaybee!" non stop for the next 30 minutes. Everyone thought it was cute. Once we found the perfect doll she wanted her out of the box! She loves her "baaybee" and drags her by the hair or legs. We may be going back soon for a new hairstyle!

What Sweet Pea is doing..

Sweet Pea is 2.5 years old now!

He has 6 scripture memorized...although this last one might have set the limit or he just really likes it. His newest one "With God all things are possible" he is now adding that to all this scriptures. For example "God created all things Revelation 4:11" he use to say it exactly like that. Now he says "God created all things with God are possible Revelation 4:11" it is kinda funny because I try so hard to explain they are two different verses and he thinks it is funny so he keeps on.

He can pick out the state of Texas on a map, point to all the continents correctly on his map....wait except Antarctica, He knows his first and last name...sounds funny hearing him say his last name, he can tell you the city and state to where he lives, he knows how old he is, how old Cupcake is, Her name, my name, daddy's name, count to 21 by himself and thirty with help, pick out several letters in the alphabet as we see them during the day, loves and requests to watch, basketball and football with daddy, is completely pee pee potty trained, only has mistakes if he is starting the number 2 process...typically that happens maybe ounce a week. I have been assured this is normal and he is progressing great. I tend to freak out when we go someplace new and ask him every 10 minutes. However, he is in the habit now of telling me when he has to go at the store. When he uses the training potty and I am not in the room he picks up the training pan and pours it into the potty! He cleans up after himself and tries to wash his own hands! I am so thankful it was such an easy process and to have him trained before 3 works for me.

Happy First Birthday

1yr

23lbs

31.25 inches tall

Cupcake had a wonderful birthday with all her friends. She had fun opening her wonderful gifts. Definitely not interested in getting cake all over herself. A few times she went mouth first, but still not much of a mess. We are sleeping through the night, but still waking mommy up when she stirs every night around 2am. We can not believe she is already one and now we have a 1 and 2 year old - crazy!

Her teachers describe her as extremely happy and a crowd stopper. According to her teachers people walk by and have to come back by to get a better look. She stops 'em with her contagious smile and great fashion.

What I am doing now:

I come and sit when told - most of the time

I can give high fives

Wave

Clap

"Bee, Bee" - Bye Bye

Slide down the big slide all by myself at the park

mama

dada

walk - at 8.5 months like big bro

daw - dog

and I know that "B" follows A. Nana says that while she was watching the kids Cupcake said "A,B,C" I have been trying to hear this but whenever I say "A" she says "B" - so I guess she is on her way!

Now we work on words daily. She points to everything and watches me say words. While Sweet Pea was counting today she repeated eight several times..it came out "eigh". It was like she woke up on Sunday and said, " oh I'm one time to start talking." Now she babbles a ton, like she is having a full conversation...it is funny to hear.

Friday, February 6, 2009

Cupcake is officially 11 months old and is doing lots of things! She must be growing in her sleep because every time she wakes up she looks older. She loves to take rides around the block in the wagon with Sweet Pea. He usually makes her laugh the entire time so it is a fun sight. This week she pointed at Sherman and said,"daw" She had to say it several times before I caught on!
Mama
Dada
Pppa-papa
daw -dog
baw-ball
bi-bi -bye bye( usually she will only do this for Sweet Pea or family)
when she is fussy all mommy has to say is, "Do you want to take a nap?" and then she stops fussing!
Wave, clap, dance, talk on the cell phone, attempting to run now, and can and will climb on anything and everything. Her teachers at church said this week she has a following. She makes everyone laugh and loves to talk to her reflection in the mirror.

Potty training is going very well. This week we only had one accident and that was at the park! We all still run to the bathroom with Sweet Pea and cheer.
