Aspen Grove

In August we spent a week at Aspen Grove, a family camp owned by the BYU Alumni Association. It's about an hour from our house, up in the mountains above Sundance ski resort. My family went to Aspen Grove almost every year from 1990 on, and since then the place has gone from a rustic camp to practially a resort. We got to stay in the Beckham Lodge, which was great for us because it had 2 bedrooms and everybody slept better.

Our bedroom at Beckham Lodge

It's high enough up in the mountains that you actually want a jacket in the mornings.

Common area outside our room. Once the kids were in bed, we came out here to read, play games, and do puzzles.

Jacob insisted on pushing the elevator buttons every time.

Outside of our lodge. Behind is the beatiful Aspen Grove mountain view.

Dining hall. Not having to cook or clean up was one of the best things about this trip.

We went on a hike to Stewart Falls. A nice older couple took this picture for us - we should have checked the picture to make sure they actually got the waterfall in the picture! The falls were huge, which you wouldn't know from the tiny corner you can see.

They have several statue water fountains around camp and Jacob loved them all.

Old-fashioned cash register at the cowboy village.

Lydia's "Romper" leaders. They have age groups for all the kids, even babies, and they take the kids for several hours each day. This was possibly the best thing about being at Aspen Grove - we actually got to relax while the kids were playing at their groups. With young kids, so many vacations actually end up being more work than just being at home!

Jacob with his Romper leaders (he was in an older group). These girls were amazing, and they even succeeded in getting Jacob to take a nap a few times, lined up on a mat next to all the other kids. We never thought he would fall asleep like that.

Funny story about this trip: we booked it last year, and a couple of months ago I got an email from Aspen Grove announcing a staff reunion (I worked there two summers in college), and the reunion happened to be the same week we would be there. Since they had some vacancies that week, they were also offering past staff members and their families a 66% discount on an entire week at camp. We had already paid but I called the office and they agreed to apply the discount!

Summer 2011

It's been a busy summer and we have a lot to catch up on. We've been on a few trips and the kids are growing up fast. Here are some pictures from the past 3 months.

Lydia has entered the pots and pans stage.

We found out she can reach stuff on the counter by standing in this drawer.

1st birthday party

Jen made her this Care Bear cake. Jacob pronounces it "kibbib."

Pajamas from Finland

Jacob reading up on flight safety procedures on the way to Colorado. Jen's parents picked us up at the airport and then we flew in her dad's plane to Minnesota for a long weekend.

Jacob loved the train at the Denver airport.

We did lots of fun stuff in Minnesota. We went on an hour-long horseback ride and Jacob chose to ride with Ukki. Jacob was quick to observe that the horses "pee standing up." He has been potty trained for a few months and is a little obsessed with potty talk right now.

The house in Menahga, MN

We stayed for part of a day in Denver on the way back home so Lydia could have another birthday party with some of the Colorado relatives.

We had a very late flight back from Denver and got the ridiculous idea that maybe if we put Jacob in the stroller, he would sleep at the airport. When we were lining up to board the plane, he finally laid down and went to sleep right on the floor.

Our boy is in preschool! It's supposed to be for 3- and 4-year-olds but he's only a few days away from three, and the teacher is our neighbor. He really loves it so far and he even gets to cut with real scissors.

Ensign Peak

Since we've been terrible at blogging lately, I figured I better get on it.  On Saturday we hiked up to the top of Ensign Peak.  That sounds a lot harder than it was, it's only 1 mile round trip.  We brought the kids and borrowed a hiking backpack since we didn't know how Jacob would do.  It was great!  Jacob walked about 2/3 of the way up and all the way down.  Paul got a good workout in with the hiking backpack and carrying Jacob of the most steep part of the trail.  Lydia liked looking around and eating apples and I had a nice time and was reminded that I'm glad I don't actually weigh 20 lbs. more.  It was fun carrying Lydia, but it was nice to take her off, too.  Here are a few pictures from our trip....the first of many, we hope.

We've been having a really fun summer, so far.  We went to Lagoon (an amusement park) with Paul's work a couple weeks ago and had a blast!  We weren't sure how Jacob would like going on rides by himself, but he loved them!  Especially the "green train," a dragon roller coaster, and the Ladybug Bop, a ride that lifts you up and then drops you a few times.  The only ride he didn't like was the Haunted House.  I guess he told Paul that he wanted to go home while they were on that ride.  We were lucky enough to go around with Paul's sister, Emily, and her family since Jonathan works at overstock now, too. We also ended up buying season passes since we could upgrade our day passes (which we didn't pay for) for cheap.  We've already been back twice since then.  I see a summer with a lot of roller coasters in our future. :)

Here's our "Baby Ida (ee-duh) girl" doing one of her favorite things...playing ramen.

Over Memorial Day, my parents came to visit.  We had a lot of fun with them and Jacob loved playing in the plane.  They almost forgot Flinga, the dog, at our house, but I'm sure she's glad we remembered her before they took off!

Other than that, we're excited for the summer and travelling.  We just bought a white minivan and are so glad to have more space and have more people ride with us (like when Ukki and Grandma Ukki came and we had to take two cars everywhere).  Have a good summer and hopefully we'll post some more of our adventures!
