Fun Finds and a Big Project

I've had these two matching chairs for awhile now as I tried to decide on the perfect fabric to reupholster them in. Well, I found some fabric a few weeks ago, but really didn't need to spend the money to pay someone to do them. So, I decided to attempt it myself! Warning, if you are a professional upholsterer, please do not read this because you will be horrified by the shortcuts I took to make this work! I didn't have metal stripping or several other items typically used so I had to improvise. I did the entire project with just a staple gun, a needle and thread and here's the bad part...hot glue! It worked though!

I'll start with the finished product because that is how my pictures uploaded and I can't seem to get them to move into the reverse order! I'm pretty proud of it even though the pattern isn't exactly centered and if you look closely I'm sure you'll find a million flaws, but I'm happy with how it turned out!

So this is how it looked after I stripped all the fabric off (which by the way was the hardest part!)

At this point, I was almost in tears thinking I was in WAY over my head. There were just too many staples, tacks and stripping and I didn't think I would ever get it put back together.

The original chair.
So you may remember I had two chairs...I've only done the one and the thought of starting a new one is a little overwhelming right now so I'm going to put it off a few days. Will I be making a career out of this? Definitely not! Am I happy with how mine turned out and glad I saved the money? Yes. Will I do it again? Ask me after I've finished the matching chair...
Now on to our finds from our road trip last week.

The only purchases I made at the outlets were porch pillows. I have been looking for porch pillows for a long time, but they are always so expensive...these were on clearance at the outlets and I really like them - also got a red stripe one too. Yes, they are more spring/summer, but they are going to have to work for fall/winter too.

This hobnail glass was a piece my Gran had and was so sweet to send it home with me!

I couldn't resist this little bird (you can tell I love birds, see the picture below too) and bought a matching one for my mom.

This little glass lamp was just too cute and on clearance because it didn't have a shade. I found this little black one at the Dollar General for $5...it looks better in person than this picture :)

This beautiful antique box was at a little shop in Senoia. My mom bought it for me for my birthday (still several months away), but we decided I had to go ahead and have it early!
I left out one of our best finds, but it is a Christmas present for Emma Cate from my mom so we're putting it aways and I'll wait to post it later!
That's all for today! Happy Wednesday!

Road Trip

Monday morning Emma Cate and I met my mom in Birmingham and headed to Georgia for the week to visit my mom's family. This was the first time they had seen Emma Cate and I think they really loved her :)

Our first stop was Hartwell, Ga. where Gran lives, but we had to detour to the North Georgia Premium Outlets to take a peek in the Pottery Barn and Restoration Hardware outlets...but I'll post about those later...nothing too exciting.

When we got to Gran's we relaxed and enjoyed Emma Cate and spent some quality time on the back porch where I snapped a few pictures of Emma Cate with Mom and Gran.

Then the next afternoon we headed to my Grandad's house on the lake in Eatonton, Ga. to visit Grandad and my Aunt Laura. They have a sweet golden retriever named Sam that loved on us a lot and of course you know Emma Cate loved him! Here are a few pictures of her with Grandad, Aunt Laura and Sam.

Mom and I got up Thursday morning and started to head back to Montgomery. We stopped in an adorable little town about half way there called Senoia, Ga. If you are ever near there, you should definitely stop! Their downtown was so cute and just lined with antique shops and little restaurants. We made a few exciting purchases there (hope to share in a coming post) and there was one store that we loved absolutely everything they had, but we had to restrain! Then we had a delicious lunch at a little cafe (where Emma Cate tasted an orange pictured below) and got back on the road.

I intended to wait until Emma Cate was ready for bed Thursday night and then get on the road home so she would sleep the whole way, but I was so tired and ready to get home that I went ahead and left that afternoon. That was probably a mistake because she wasn't sleepy and therefore cried for 2 1/2 hours of the 3 hour trip home. It broke my heart! Overall she did really well on the trip, but she's been super clingy and fusses every time I put her down since we got home...I'm guessing just because she got a little spoiled having someone hold her all the time on our trip! We are settling back into our routine though and Phil and Jake are glad to have us home!

I have several big projects I'm getting ready to start on...first on the list is reupholstering 2 chairs myself. I'm trying to save on the expense of having someone else do them and try it myself...after over an hour of working today though (even with Phil's help) I'm only about half way finished taking off the old upholstery on one chair so this could be a long project!

Time to get little bit to bed. Hope everyone has had a great weekend!

My Angel at 7 Months

Photobucket

Photobucket

We made a quick attempt at some 7 month pictures this afternoon despite the almost 100 degree temps! What is the deal with this heat in late September?!

At 7 months EC weighs around 17 lbs. She is doing better with eating solids. We try to make an attempt 3 times a day at normal meal times. Sometimes she flat out refuses to eat any of it, other times we'll get a few bites in and every now and then she'll do really well and eat most of a small jar. Her favorites (or rather the ones she tolerates the best) are carrots, pears, bananas and pear/raspberry combo. She's also done pretty well with squash, apples/apricot combo, prunes and applesauce. Not a fan of sweet potatoes or peaches!

We had a few difficult weeks of nighttime sleep, but are doing better now. She typically goes to bed between 7:30 and 8 pm and wakes sometime between 9 and 11 to nurse again then right back to sleep and sleeps until 6 or 7 am. We are pretty much down to 2 naps a day now. One from around 9/9:30 until 10:30/11 and then another from around 2 until 3:30/4.

She is sitting up pretty well on her own now, but I still usually put the boppy pillow behind her if I am going to leave the room with her sitting up. She rolls all over the place and scoots everywhere, but hasn't really tried to push up to crawl. She goes all over the house in her walker and wants so badly to be able to get up and run! She can stand up holding on to someone/something and will walk if you hold her hands up.

She still loves Jake and laughs at everything he does. She's talking (jabbering) all the time now and says "dadadada" and "mamamama" and "babababa" most of the time.

Her favorite toy right now is her keys, but she would rather have someone elses real keys if she could get them!

I'm enjoying all the moments...they are passing much too quickly!

Catching Up

The last few weeks have been pretty busy and we aren't slowing down any time soon! Here's a quick catch up before I'm off to pack for our next adventure.

Last weekend we had friends from Auburn come to visit us with their little girl who just turned 1 earlier this month. I took her 1 year portraits while they were here and will be posting a few of my favorites soon. The girls had fun together...Emma Cate especially enjoyed watching Avery walk around...she wished so badly that she could join her! Thanks Emily, Levi and Avery for coming to see us!

We have enjoyed the start of football season and Emma Cate loves to cheer on her tigers! Phil's sweet (and VERY talented) cousin Maryanna sent us these precious little Auburn shoes and headband. Emma Cate was too involved with the shaker to be much of a model!

This weekend Chris and Mary Lindsey came in town and we had everyone over to watch football yesterday. Emma Cate loved seeing her Aunt Minsey (is that how we are spelling it ML?) and Uncle Chris and of course her Nina and Big Daddy too!
And she loves her bedtime story with her daddy! Jake was up there listening too, but didn't make it in this picture.

Ok, precious one is awake and I have to get busy again! Almost forgot, she is 7 months old today! I'm about to try to take some good pictures so I'll do my best to post pictures and stats soon. She is growing and changing so much!

A Few Products We Love, Part 2 (and a few that I found unnecessary for us at least)

Aden and Anais "Issie" lovey blanket:

I wanted to give Emma Cate a lovey to sleep with to help with the transition from swaddling, but I was worried about giving her anything that she could bury her face in and make breathing difficult. These are super thin muslin just like the swaddle blankets we loved. They are so soft and the perfect size to snuggle, but completely breathable.

Farm Tails book by Jellycat:

My mother in law has these at the drug store and Emma Cate loves hers! She plays with it everyday and loves to chew the different tails.

This dress my sister found on clearance at babyGap. I love it because it is super soft and comfy. Unless we are going to church or somewhere where I need to dress her up, I keep her in comfy clothes - usually either a dress like this that I can pull on some soft pants under before naps (she sleeps better with pants on...not sure why) or a soft bubble. Comfort is the main goal...soft fabric, nothing with gathers or heavy stitching or anything that would dig into her skin while she rolls around and plays. I would have never thought about that before I had her...would have just picked out things I thought were cute... so just thought I would share!

Baby Bjorn Carrier "Air":

I originally bought a Moby wrap and while I used it some when Emma Cate was a newborn, it was just too time consuming to get on and off unless I was going to wear it for a long time. I liked how soft it was, but I wouldn't buy it again. Before we went on our trips this summer, we went ahead and purchased this carrier and I have used it every day since! It is lightweight, cool and comfortable for me and Emma Cate. A lot of times I'll take it with me shopping instead of the stroller and I use it everyday for walks around the yard. It's easy to take on and off and is really worth every penny.

Sophie the Giraffe Teether...a lifesaver!

This stroller fan saved us on our travels this summer with the terrible heat! It kept EC nice and cool. It was surprisingly hard to find a stroller fan though...I finally found this one at onestepahead.com. It has foam blades so little fingers and toes can't get hurt and it really makes a good breeze.

We bought this adorable doll with credit we had remaining at my favorite little baby shop in Tuscaloosa. EC loves her. The company is called "blabla" and all of their products are super cute! They are based in Atlanta, Ga. and have everything from knit dolls to mobiles...which are absolutely precious, but I didn't have enough credit to get one and they are too expensive for me to justify :( Love this mini doll though! Phil says it's the ugliest doll he's ever seen, but I let her pick it out and this is the one she leaned towards! I think she's cute!

The Angel Care monitor has saved me a lot of worry. It sets off an alarm if there is no movement (breathing) in the crib for 20 seconds. Thanks Nanny for giving it to us. Now that Emma Cate is moving around so much at night, sometimes I wish we also had a monitor with a camera so I could see her without going into her room. When she wakes up fussing at night and we are trying to get her to go back to sleep on her own, if I go in there it makes it way worse, so it would be nice to have a way to check without her seeing me. But all in all the Angel Care has been way more important so if I had to pick I'd go with this one.

I've mentioned before, but we love our Chicco play yard! We took it to the beach with us and she slept great in it and she plays in it ever day!

And finally how cute is this bedding from Pottery Barn Kids! No we do not have it so I really can't say it is great, but I hope they are still making it when it is time to move EC into her big girl room because I just love it!

Oh, and a few things I don't have pictures of...

Sassy baby powder scented bags...they are blue little bags that tie shut (find mine at Walmart) and come in packs of 50 or more. I use them for the nasty diapers - they totally mask the smell. I keep a few in the diaper bag in case I have a nasty diaper I have to throw away somewhere or even worse, that has to stay in the car for a little while! We bought a Diaper Champ, but if I could do it over, I would have just bought a regular trash can with a step lid opener and used these bags for the smelly ones. I know a lot of people like the Diaper Champ, but our handle sticks really bad so half the time I have to open the whole thing to throw a diaper away and it fills up fast...just all together I don't think it is necessary.

The Chicco Walker is WONDERFUL! I've posted pictures of Emma Cate in it before. She LOVES it and now goes all over the house in it and has a blast!

I'm sure there are lots of other things we aren't thinking about right now so more to come...
Have a great weekend!

Emma Cate's New Chair

We inherited this adorable little chair from Phil's grandparents and my sister suggested recovering it in the black and white pin dot fabric. We were brainstorming for Emma Cate's future big girl room and while I haven't made my mind up about any specifics yet, I think this will be a good starting point! I love how it turned out! Wish I could have done it myself and saved some cash! Emma Cate loves it though and I can just picture her sitting in it reading books soon :)

War Eagle!

We celebrated the beginning of football season and the Auburn win by wearing Emma Cate's adorable smocked Auburn dress to church today (Thank you the Windle family!) We tried to snap a few pictures of her in her dress, but she was really sleepy so they didn't turn out great...but hey, we have many more games this year to take pictures! I've been told by multiple people that I had to put new pictures of her up TODAY so here they are...

She is doing a lot better with food (as in a few bite fulls a day instead of flat out refusing to eat solids at all!) Carrots are a favorite and she does pretty well with pears and bananas too.

And Jake is doing a lot better. Our vet's office has been closed so we weren't able to take him in, but his face seems to be healing up on it's own. I think he probably needed stitches, but now he'll just have a very rugged scar, maybe he'll look tougher than he really is!

Poor Little Buddy

We've spent this afternoon doctoring our little Jakey. He had a little accident while he was out helping Daddy in the yard. See, Jakey is used to riding in the truck, not in the back of the truck. (Yes, I know, he doesn't know he's a dog, but that's just the way I feel pets should be treated, I can't help it.) So when Daddy let him ride down the driveway in the back of truck, he decided he didn't like that and jumped right out...but he was still attached to the leash so his landing was rather less than graceful, but at least he couldn't run off and find the highway. When Phil brought him in the house, I panicked, thinking the worst after what I went through with our other furry baby last summer. Thankfully he seems to only have a few cuts on his face and legs. We are going to the vet tomorrow for shots so we'll make sure.

I'm off to make a tailgate worthy dinner to celebrate the first college football game!
