try something new when you can. even better if you can try a whole new sport. what is better than to try out skiing esp since you are in a place in the winter. there is no reason you shouldnt go and ski. and i was lucky enough to manage to join toroa in their ski trip. and it was a right time for me between reports and essays.
and this time it is another trip back to queenstown. but this time round we are not visiting the place but getting the sweat on on the mountain top. in fact i never really got to see queenstown at all. all i saw was queenstown in darkness.
this is our bus ride up from dunedin to queenstown. apparently they kept feeding us candies and lollies. talk about welfare man. i was sitting with tammy, bavini vietnamese flatmate. the bus was so old i thought if it could climb the hills and go up the mountain roads. but it seems that it got us to the top of cardrona so i guess it is okay. but as usual the bus ride was long. the thing i love about singapore is that maximum time to get from one end to the other was 2 hours at max if there was a traffic jam. in NZ without a single car sharing the same road as you you will still need hours.
we arrived at 10pm at night at queenstown lodge. it is a pretty nice place at the top of the hill facing the lake. if only the sun was up when we where there. but it was still great to be able to see the stars so clearly. you can never see stars in singapore. and it would have been more romantic if ron was there to watch it with me. or a moment i imagined. one look into the sky and you are wowed by the number of stars you can see with your eye.
that is what i call skylights.
this is our room. right at the end of the corridor away from the everything else they have at the lodge. apparently we got a nice big room. compared to the rest of the room ours is so spacous and roomy with a windows and this really awesome toilet. and what's more is that there is a tv in the room!
and shireen is so happy with it. but there are only like 4 channels in NZ.
we spent some time talking about things again. until we realised the next morning we should have slept earlier. waking up at 6 am in the morning when you slept at 2 plus is not very good for the brain. coz you get high and you get sleepy easily. but i cant deny that we really had a great "girls night in" there is always a photo moment no matter what.
this is the top of the mountain. or ski resort. the view is so pretty. remembered when i told you how nice the southern alps were when i was on the plane to christchurch? this is seeing the whole view nearer and with more color. with the really nice clear weather when we got there it was simply so beautiful.
see the view behind me? those are clouds and not water. we are over the clouds. i could just close my eyes and take in all the beauty it had to offer. NZlanders take pride and joy in their winter sports. you should see the number of cars parked meters all the way down the hill. and they can walk up the 200 meter slope in ski boots. and ski boots are painful.

these are some of the people from toroa. which i have no idea who they are. the weather was hot and sunny and actually much warmer than what ill expect a mountain to have. but the moment the wind blows......
lucky i had all of dias windproof and water proof things. actually i look like dias in all his gear. but at least i have a different beanie. but i hate wearing beanies coz it gives you VERY UGLE hat hair. the only reason why i did wear it was to keep warm. in fact i think i look hideous with the beanie and with the sunglasses coz it makes my nose look bigger (and it already is) and emplify it by ten.
and the good thing is that it snowed during the afternoon. a nice fresh sheet of cover and another experience for me. now i have offically seen snow falling and snow on the ground at the same time. just that this is cheating coz it is in the mountains. and we four look so nice in our different colored jackets on the sheet white background.

this is us when we got the skis from the rental place. it is so hard to get your feet into the boot. it feel like your ankle is going to sprain itself half way through. but i guess that is the way how it is. and skiing have so many pieces of equiptment until you donno how to carry everything.
this is me on skis, we had classes in the morning of our day 1 of skiing. and it is basically a repeat of everything i had learnt in korea. and i to think that i did remember what i had learnt in korea 4 years ago. and my pride is that i never fell once in my first day of skiing. that is one big confident boost for me. YAY!
the end of the first day and we went back to queenstown to have dinner. it was a chinese restraunt with nice and spicy food. god i tell you how much i missed spicy food. the hot and sour soup plus garlic prawns.
and as usual i cannot sleep well again at night. got too many things in my mind and i just kept thinking of things. and only manage to get a 3plus hour sleep although i did go to bed very very early.
day two.
we finaly have the guts and confidence to go up the chair lift to try the real slopes. and it surprised me how long it took to do a return trip from the top. the chair lift took ages to get all the way up. and coming down was so tiring that i had to stop a few times just to let my knees have a break.
but it was nice to feel yourself getting the hang of it. in fact i fell twice down the slope and another two times from the chairlift. the first time i fell was off the chair lift and i felt so stupid doing that.
we took two routes down. one was the senic route where you could just ski and overlook the alps and the other was a steeper downhill one. both were rated "beginers". it made me wonder how bad could the expert on be.
this little bit of photos we took on the second day is in the middle of the scenic route. we already took plently of photos on our first day and the novelty of it has gone away but we still couldnt resis taking our existence on the route.
the funniest thing is that on the way back when the bus drove down the slopes and round the turns. i could totally feel myself skiing and doing my S curves down hill. the feeling is just so awesome and yet weird. it is like dreaming you can fly.
i guess i feel very accomplished to be knowing that i did try something new and i was daring enough to ski down steep enough slopes. but there are so many things at the back of my mind i cant seem to forget or ignore. i am not exactly in the best of mood to type this post.
and the worst thing is that your whole damn body aches from skiing. even if it was just two days. for the first time after a very long time i realised how human i can get. like when every single muscle in your body aches like hell, all you feel is that it reminds you of your existance on earth. you cant raise your hands and your cant climb the stairs. but some pains are worse than others
