We did something crazy, spontaneous, and 100% worth it.
Some kid was going around the neighborhood asking people if they were interested in hosting a Japanese exchange student for 3 weeks this summer. For some strange reason I said I was.
Before we knew it we were signed up, and had a 14 year old Japanese girl headed to our home.
Her name is Chihiro Mashida from the country side of Tokyo, Japan.
She is such a sweet, respectful, and lovely girl. We spent a great deal of time with all 20 of the students and though most of them were awesome, I am quite certain we had the very best one!
I am not saying it wasn't hard though. It was! She spoke very limited English. VERY limited. And I was still in the midst of Les Mis rehearsals...and we have 3 kids already. In general, we are lead very busy lives so tacking on another person to care for was kind of insane. But I know we were very blessed for our decision.
July 22, 14: Day One
Picked her and another boy up from the airport, stopped to get them some lunch, then headed home (with a quick stop in SF to drop off Hiroyoki at his host family) then came home.
It was kinda awkward since we hardly understood a single word each other said. But before long, no words were needed and the kids instantly fell in love. It's amazing how little words need to be spoken in order for children to get along.
She brought fun little games and toys from Japan.
Not sure she was use to children throwing balls at her face......
or blowing things into her face........
She was really good at origami and liked showing Tianna how to make them herself.
Day 2:
(first 2 pics have nothing to do with Chihiro, but it was so funny watching the girls play this day. Linaya was Sleeping Beauty. Bet you didn't know Aurora was patriotic, did ya?
Tianna was the prince.

The students spent many days with their group and not with the host families. They picked them up right after breakfast and brought them home late afternoon.
Once Chihiro got home she brought out some Japanese candy. Strange stuff! But the kids loved it!
They were more like science experiments than candy.
and these little gems- SO delicious!
24th of July Celebrations!
It was a crazy busy day! My Les Miserable cast was in the parade but Luke had to work. I dropped the kids off at the parade with some friends also hosting a Japanese student, and buzzed off to meet up with my cast-mates.
I walked along the parade route--and holy cow it's long! Then, I had to get the kids, rush back to the other end of Spanish Fork to meet up with everyone on stage to perform a few numbers. I literally ran on stage half way through the first song.
Then we came home and the kiddos played in the back yard. For a really long time! Chihiro loved playing outside with them.
That night we had Luke's Uncle and Aunt and their family, who live in Missouri, over for a Pioneer Day barbecue. By this point, Chihiro was quite certain we were the busiest people around!
I'm pretty sure she's right.
