Celebrating Grandpa Peacock's Bday

On August 3rd we made a quick trip to Price to celebrate Grandpa Peacock's birthday at the park with the family. He is currently in a nursing home in Price so it was extra special honoring him.
We love you Grandpa!!!!!!!!!!

Chihiro- Part 2

July 25-26: Camping trip to Blue Lake

We were excited to take Chihiro camping. She said she camped with her family... but we weren't sure how rugged that had been. We kept trying to explain to her "No toilets..." but worried she would be shocked and/or mortified. But nope, she handled it like a champ.
First time fishing
She was the only one to catch a fish for a long time!

Chihiro braided the girl's hair and accessorized with real flowers.
Up to this point we had enjoyed Chihiro's company and assumed she liked ours, but we hand't really connected until this trip. It was fun taking the time to learn more about her, her family, and her home. She showed us pictures and it was nice to really bond with her.

July 28th-- Fun day with the Japanese group
The family's were invited to attend the group's day activities whenever we chose to. We had gone to the Grotto up Payson canyon and played games at the park the 2nd day.
It didn't take long for a few of the male students to realize our little girls were really fun to tease and harass...Tianna and ESPECIALLY Adelia harassed them right back.  They didn't communicate with words because of the language barrier, but they sure could tease each other without saying anything.
Those boys got excited whenever they saw the girls were tagging along.

This happened to be BYU campus tour day.
We went to the paleontology museum
 And the art museum
And walked through the beautiful campus
See, even the leader's took special interest in the girls. Nobody offered to carry me across campus :(
Science center
That's a whole lot of crystals!
An EFY group walked past (boys escorting the girls in typical EFY style) and these 3 wacky boys just linked up their arms with the boys as well and started walking. They didn't care what anyone thought about them! haha.
After we left BYU we went to a park and played game for several hours. It was really fun getting to know these kids from so far away. It was particularly cool for our daughters to be exposed to people different than us.

July 30th.
The Payson Pool.

July 31st
Chihiro wanted to make us dinner. Some ingredients she brought from home, some we bought and some we had to improvise with because America doesn't have them.
I am not very adventurous with strange foods, so i was a little nervous, but everything was delicious actually. Well... the seaweed salad wasn't a fave but the other dishes were very very good.
*she was very  nervous to cook. I don't think she does much of it at home normally.
The next morning Chihiro and the other students left for a whole week to travel to Arches, St. George, Zion National Park etc. We really missed having her around that week!

Although, I did NOT miss her laundry. Everything she wore went immediately into a laundry basket and brought to me. I thought maybe everyone in Japan did tiny loads of laundry every single day, but upon some investigation, they don't. I think Chihiro has some OCD tendencies. :)

Chihiro Mashida

We did something crazy, spontaneous, and 100% worth it.
Some kid was going around the neighborhood asking people if they were interested in hosting a Japanese exchange student for 3 weeks this summer. For some strange reason I said I was.
Before we knew it we were signed up, and had a 14 year old Japanese girl headed to our home.
Her name is Chihiro Mashida from the country side of Tokyo, Japan.

She is such a sweet, respectful, and lovely girl. We spent a great deal of time with all 20 of the students and though most of them were awesome, I am quite certain we had the very best one!

I am not saying it wasn't hard though. It was! She spoke very limited English. VERY limited. And I was still in the midst of Les Mis rehearsals...and we have 3 kids already. In general, we are lead very busy lives so tacking on another person to care for was kind of insane. But I know we were very blessed for our decision.

July 22, 14: Day One
Picked her and another boy up from the airport, stopped to get them some lunch, then headed home (with a quick stop in SF to drop off Hiroyoki at his host family) then came home.

It was kinda awkward since we hardly understood a single word each other said. But before long, no words were needed and the kids instantly fell in love. It's amazing how little words need to be spoken in order for children to get along.
She brought fun little games and toys from Japan.
Not sure she was use to children throwing balls at her face......
or blowing things into her face........

She was really good at origami and liked showing Tianna how to make them herself.

Day 2:
(first 2 pics have nothing to do with Chihiro, but it was so funny watching the girls play this day. Linaya was Sleeping Beauty. Bet you didn't know Aurora was patriotic, did ya?
 Tianna was the prince.
>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>
The students spent many days with their group and not with the host families. They picked them up right after breakfast and brought them home late afternoon.

Once Chihiro got home she brought out some Japanese candy. Strange stuff! But the kids loved it!
They were more like science experiments than candy.
and these little gems- SO delicious!

24th of July Celebrations!

It was a crazy busy day! My Les Miserable cast was in the parade but Luke had to work. I dropped the kids off at the parade with some friends also hosting a Japanese student, and buzzed off to meet up with my cast-mates.
I walked along the parade route--and holy cow it's long! Then, I had to get the kids, rush back to the other end of Spanish Fork to meet up with everyone on stage to perform a few numbers. I literally ran on stage half way through the first song.

Then we came home and the kiddos played in the back yard. For a really long time! Chihiro loved playing outside with them.

That night we had Luke's Uncle and Aunt and their family, who live in Missouri, over for a Pioneer Day barbecue. By this point, Chihiro was quite certain we were the busiest people around!
I'm pretty sure she's right.
