2

Isaac is now 2, making him the biggest little boy around here.

On his birthday, he really wanted to wear his snow jacket to go to church. It wasn't cold out, but he insisted so much that I figured I would let him find out for himself if he had made an appropriate wardrobe choice.
Then, he fell asleep at Mass and got a little birthday blessing. When we got home, he woke up, so he really only had about a 1 hour nap, which is a little short for him. We started setting up for Isaac's little birthday party. I have some better pictures (from Nana's camera) and will share them soon. Out of consideration for people who may not want pictures of their children on the internet, I had to leave out a few cute ones for now, but at least you can get the idea..

When everyone sang "Happy Birthday" to Isaac, it was the cutest thing ever. He was beside himself with happiness. I think he had been anticipating that moment for so long (for him), since so many of his daycare friends also had May birthdays. He was smiling, squealing, and wiggling around. His nose was even running and he wiped it and got a little wayward snot going off to the side. But he was so happy, it was absolutely worth all the preparation. I could just tell he was thinking, "It's finally my turn! They are singing to me!"

We didn't put the two candles on a cake because recently Isaac has been getting a little spit in there when he blows them out. On his actual birthday, he was totally appropriate so I guess it was a needless precaution.
Nana, Grandma, Grandpa, Uncle Mikey, Uncle Greg, Auntie Anna, Baby London, and one of Uncle Greg's friends stayed behind for a little while after the party was over. Isaac opened a few presents, and really liked all of them. I'm not sure what he liked more: the garden trowel of his very own, his new toy boats, or the Bambi DVD. I'm glad we went with no presents for the party though because we are seriously running out of space in this little apartment. I'll have to sort hrough Isaac's old toys and see if there are any it would be appropriate to part with.

Then, after a long, happy birthday, Isaac was very tired. He actually fell asleep while Mama was getting ready for bed. He is such a big little boy, and we love him so much!

a beautiful day with the dumbest mama

So, today I felt a little silly. We went to get some maintenance done on the car, and decided to wander around downtown while we waited.
We took Isaac to the train station and lo and behold, right on cue, a big train rolled past. (You don't have to watch all 3 minutes of it. It is really for Isaac.)
Then, we knew Amtrak was coming later, so we went to sit for a little while elsewhere.
Then after we watched the Amtrak train stop and load its passengers, we crossed the tracks to get a closer look at this historical house we could see. Admission was $5, so we opted for the free trail next to it. We then managed to unknowingly climb Skinner Butte, with our CEO in the lead.
The views from up there were so pretty! We didn't even really climb that far and it was very close to downtown. I think we will go again some day.
Oh, but now on to the dumbest mama part. We went back down Skinner Butte and went to pick up our car. It took a few minutes, but we got it and went back home. On the way, Isaac fell asleep. Mama carried Isaac out of the car to the door and had Papa look for the keys in her purse. He couldn't find them. We handed off Isaac, who by this point had awakened. Mama couldn't find them either. So we had to call the community assistant to come help us get into our apartment. She was busy with a project on campus for another hour. So, we played outside (although it was too cold for Mama) for an hour, then finally got inside. I went to rectify the wrong of losing the keys somewhere due to a messy purse with too many things in it. The hypothesis was that they had just fallen out somewhere and I hadn't noticed. Because - we were sure the keys were not in the purse. I retracked my steps downtown, to Amtrak - had they seen any keys in their lost and found? - no. I went to re-park closer, said a prayer to St. Anthony re: the missing keys and started climbing up Skinner Butte again. I was feeling not so great as I climbed up, and for some reason, reached in my purse into one of the little pockets. Of course, I found my keys. I paused for several moments, pondering whether or not I should lie to Papa about finding them. I could always say I found them while I was on the trail up Skinner Butte. It wouldn't quite be a lie... Finally I decided the best way to go would be to just tell him because sometimes when you feel that dumb, you need someone to tease you. So I went back, imagining the conversation that must have taken place between me and St. Anthony, of which I had clearly not heard the response.

Me: Dear St. Anthony, please please please please help me find those keys, and help me to pay enough attention so I can see them.
St. Anthony: (shaking head) Okay, this one is not that hard... try the purse. No really, try the purse. Okay, she's not listening. I'll wait. (ten minutes later) Oh, don't you need something in your purse???? See, they were there all along. Next.

Anyway, Papa ended up not making fun of me, which I guess was okay. And next time, I will check every single pocket of the purse. Or, just keep the keys all together... that would work too.

Isaac turns two tomorrow. He is so precious I can hardly stand it. :)

evidently

Evidently it has decided to be spring now.
Yesterday, Mama gave her Evidence-Based Practice Project presentation. It went well, especially in the sense that she passed and will graduate.

Also, before I get too far removed from the actual occurence, a few weeks ago, Isaac started saying his "s-clusters"! It was so cute, because he said "poon" one night (for spoon), then paused, and slowly corrected himself, saying "ssspoon". Since then he's been doing pretty well with those, which is nice because it eliminates a lot of guesswork. I've also noticed an interesting strategy with his l-clusters, like "pl", "cl", etc. He can say the /l/ by itself, like in "Hello" or "London", but with another consonant it's a /w/, so "play" still sounds like "pway". He's just started adding a schwa sound (the "uh" sound) in between the two parts, so he says "kuh-leen" and "puh-lay" instead of "kween" and "pwei". I thought that was pretty innovative!

Also just in the last week I've noticed interactive play. I made the mistake of calling it "cooperative play" when describing it. I mean, they will cooperate, by pushing each other in this car that's outside, but it's not always peaceful. There's still a lot of "mine" and "my turn" going on. It's just fun that Isaac will actually interact with and to some extent cooperate with the kids out on the playground, instead of just going and playing beside them or doing his own thing all the time.

Speaking of which though... I know I'm going to sound like I'm really going the way of the Eugene hippie or am overprotective to some people, but the other day, there was a toy gun left laying around at the playground. It really bothered me because of course it was shiny so attractive to tiny boys. Isaac thought it was some sort of hammer. I don't want my (almost) two year old to know about guns yet. I also don't think it's okay for little kids to pretend to shoot each other, even in a bad guy/good guy context. Swords, those are fine. But guns really bother me. I picked it up to put it out of sight and asked this other mom, "I don't know WHOSE this is, but.." and she said, "Oh, it's ours." I hope she got my intended message and they keep their choice to let their young children pretend to shoot each other to themselves. What is up with people these days? It's not developmentally appropriate to expose such young children to violence. Some parents need to kick the responsibility up a notch.

There, that is my rant for today.

And this is my 200th post, too, which is appropriate, since Isaac turns 2 on Sunday. I can't believe it has been two years. Just 2 years ago, on Thursday I turned in all my assignments, and on Friday I had Isaac. This year, I completed one of my last requirements for my master's on Thursday, and Isaac is turning 2 within just a few days. It's interesting how these patterns crop up in life.

escargots

Today, I finished up another project. I finally cooked the snails I had found outside several weeks ago. Doesn't that broth just make you want to slurp them up? I thought it was too good to pass up, so I put it in with the butter when I sauteed them up.
Here are the reactions of my boys:
However, here is Isaac with pasta which has been mixed with the sauce, but not the escargots themselves.
Papa's evaluation of the escargots.

I think it would be helpful to have the information about how to do this yourself in one place. I had to look at a lot of different websites to figure out what was what.

How to prepare your very own escargots from those pests in your garden:

yatta!

Done:
After thousands of stitches...and a nearly two-year gap...
And it's just the right size for Isaac! :)

Nevermind the odd color change near the end. I have decided to entitle this piece: Oregon Daydream. That should justify it. Think of it in an abstract way, and look at the sky. (Maybe I ran out of blue yarn... but it was from my great-grandma's stash so I figured it would be hard to find more.)

ah-lu-ee-a!

That's what Isaac said when we got home from Mass today. Alluia!

It has been a good week. Today Isaac was very good at Mass.
In fact, the only person that got on my nerves was the lady behind me who seemed to think that commenting on things unrelated to church with her daughter/granddaughter/niece(?) in a normal voice level was a good idea. I don't know, for me asking a small child, "Oh, what's that?" in a loud voice, then telling her "shh" when she answers doesn't make any sense at all. Think about it, people. I know I need to be more accepting. But kids being loud you can understand. Adults need to be good models. Or at least comment on something related to the Mass, like "This is when Communion turns into Jesus's body." Argh.

Anyways, yesterday we also had a good day. Although it was cloudy, we did get outside a little with Papa, and that was great.

Earlier this week, we went to Uncle Mikey's confirmation. Unfortunately the lighting is not the best in St. Mary's... But congratulations nonetheless to Michael Steven Thomas! :)
Isaac found the holy water font he was baptised in. At first he thought it was a "swimming pool" so we had to keep a close eye on him, but then he just put his hands in. We figured it was a good distraction (this was after the Mass, by the way) while everyone tried to get pictures with Archbishop Vlazny.
Uncle Mikey soon cracked down on Isaac's renegade behavior, however.
And, a few more exciting things happened! I finished my final paper and turned in the hard copy. Now I just have my presentation left, on the 19th.

And...thanks to your prayers...I got offered the job I wanted!

So it has been a most wonderful week!

When I heard they killed bin Laden...

...Isaac and I were out watering the onions. Papa came out and said, "They killed bin Laden." And of course, Mama said, "What? Really? Are they sure it's actually him?" But yes, it looks like that is the case.

In other news, Isaac yesterday initiated using the potty on his own in the morning. I didn't hear anything for a little while and I found him in the bathroom. He had unzipped his footed pajamas and was trying to take the arms off. I helped him with that part. Then he wanted to take the disposable diaper off, but it wasn't cooperating, so I helped with that. Sweet little guy. He went in the potty a few times over the course of the day, and that was really helpful since we were running low on diaper covers.

And we went on an egg hunt after church, which Isaac was a big fan of...
and it was Fr. Richard's anniversary!
Other than that, we just enjoyed the sun.

And now Mama has her first real job interview in two hours. :) I hope it goes alright! (both because I want the job and because a lot of people have given good recommendations so I don't want to make a fool of myself and let them down!!!)
